DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis never met, as far as anyone knows, so our production is not a history play in the literal sense of the word. Ours is a tale that asks the question: “what if.” What if the twentieth century’s two great apologists for their world views had met? What would that conversation have been like? The setting of this imagined conversation is Freud’s study in London, on the day in 1939 that Great Britain declared war on Nazi Germany, and two weeks before the great psychoanalyst died. We hope you enjoy our production. Freud’s last Session, like any work of the theatre, deals with the “human condition;” that is, it seeks to explore what it means to be a human being in a fallen world. At its best, theatre entertains us while making contemplative demands on us as well. Some plays may ask us (explicitly or implicitly) to render judgment on the characters’ actions; some may encourage us to rejoice with the characters’ victories; others may warn us of the consequences of certain choices; and we may even identify with certain characterswith their foolishness, bravery, cunning, love, etc. Through them, we may recognize in ourselves both the frailty and strength that are part and parcel of the human journey. Freud’s Last Session may delight some and offend others. The characters may entertain us and they might disgust us. But, in all these responses (and others), we have the opportunity to consider our place in the human community. -Walter Willams
There is a smoking effect used in the play. It is an effect only. No tobacco or nicotine products were used.
