Traffic Links and Arrival How to get there Aviation The airport is located nine kilometres to the north of the city centre. There are very good non-stop services between Dresden and airports in Germany (Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Munich, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, Hamburg), Switzerland (Basle, Zurich), Great Britain (London Heathrow) and Russia (Moscow Sheremetyevo). The airport is directly accessible by car and by public transport. A taxi ride to the city centre takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the time of day, and costs 16 to 20 Euros. The S-Bahn line no. 2 connects the airport with Dresden-Neustadt station (approx. 15 min.) and Dresden main station (approx. 22 min.). Railways Dresden has two intercity train stations – Dresden main station and Dresden Neustadt station – and is connected to all major German cities via the ICE and EC/IC Deutsche Bahn network. Aarhus, Budapest, Bratislava, Prague, Vienna and Zurich are directly accessible on an international level. The Eurostar makes connections to Great Britain possible through the Channel Tunnel via Paris or Brussels. www.dresdeninformation.com

Road traffic Dresden can be reached easily by car via the motorways A4 (Cologne– Eisenach–Chemnitz), A 13 (Rostock– Berlin) and A 17 (Prague). The city is also connected to the transport network via the main roads B6, B97, B170, B172 and B173. Bus lines provide a fast, inexpensive direct connection between Dresden and major cities such as Berlin, Munich, Vienna and Prague. Most buses go several times a day, depending on the line, with stops at various points along the route. 3

Money The legal tender in Germany is the Euro. In addition to bureaux de change, all major banks can be found in the city, with numerous branches. Cash machines are available outside opening hours. Tips Service and VAT are generally included in the prices. However, in many service sectors tips are traditionally given. 10 percent is usual, with the amount depending on the level of satisfaction with the service provided. Taxi It is not usual for taxis to be hailed whilst driving. Instead, you can find a number of taxi ranks in the city. Taxis can also be requested by 4

Opening hours In Dresden, shops in the city centre are usually open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm. Large supermarkets and shopping centres open until 10 pm, in some cases. Most shops are closed on Sundays, with the exception of bakeries, train stations and petrol stations. Public transport Dresden has a well-developed public transport system. You can buy tickets at stops, on the transport and at service points. Random ticket checks take place – travelling without a valid ticket is punished with a fine. There is also an S-Bahn network in Dresden and the surrounding area.

Baroque Inheritance and Creative Development Dresden dedicated to art The reputation that precedes Dresden throughout the world is significantly based on the rich artistic tradition of the Saxon capital. The baroque splendour that once made Dresden one of the most beautiful cities in Europe is important for the image and charisma of the city. After its almost complete destruction in the second world war, its decline and deformation in the GDR period and, last but not least, the devastating flood in 2002, Dresden is now largely renovated and has found a way back to its former glory. www.dresdeninformation.com

Dresden, the city of art Dresden is known as the “Florence on the Elbe” for a reason. Its location and its architecture, but, in particular, its extraordinary art collections are responsible for this name. Augustus the Strong, a passionate art enthusiast, shaped Dresden as an art metropolis of European standing. With the opening of the picture gallery designed by Gottfried Semper in 1854, Dresden achieved the status of an important exhibition location, after the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and the Altes Museum 9

in Berlin, at a very early stage. The Old Masters Picture Gallery in the Semper Building is still the highlight of a rich museum landscape comprising more than 50 museums of all thematic areas. With works by Giorgione, Tizian, Corregio, Rubens, van Dyck, Rembrandt and Vermeer, the picture gallery is one of the worlds leading collections. 500 years of the Sistine Madonna The famous painting Sistine Madonna by Raphael, in particular, attracts countless visitors every year. On the occasion of its 500th anniversary in 2012 the Dresden State Art Collections dedicates a special exhibition to it. Therein, the history of 10

the painting – which is primarily famous due to the chubby-cheeked cherubs in the lower part of the picture – will be covered. Once an altar piece for the newly built Church of San Sisto in Piacenza, commissioned by Pope Julius II, the picture became an icon of popular culture. The angels at the feet of the Madonna emancipated themselves from the rest of the picture and achieved international fame. Whether mugs, posters or key chains – there is an incredible number of items with the angels printed on them. However, few know the fact that these worldfamous figures have their home in Dresden. This could change with the special exhibition in 2012. Gerhard Richter anniversary The anniversary of the Sistine Madonna is not the only one being celebrated by the city of Dresden in 2012. Gerhard Richter, one of the most important contemporary artists and a son of the city of Dresden is celebrating his 80th birthday. The Gerhard Richter archives are focussing on his work with the anniversary exhibition “ATLAS” in the Modern Art Gallery in the Lipsius building. Approximately 800 framed boards with more than 15,000 photographs, newspaper extracts, sketches and designs from Richters studio work in the early 1960s will be displayed.

New art in Dresden Gerhard Richter is just one example to illustrate that Dresden, alongside its reputation as “the Florence on the Elbe”, is a starting point of important impetuses to the development of art. Dresden contrasts the Ostrale exhibition of contemporary art, which has established itself as an international art festival since 2007, with the baroque tradition of the city. Aiming to present the entire range of contemporary art, the Ostrale invites national and international artists every year. A further highlight of contemporary art in Dresden is the open air project White Fortress at and on the Zwinger pond. The show is per-

formed by the St. Petersburg dance theatre Derevo, which has been permanently based in Hellerau, the European centre of the arts, since 2003. The centre focuses on contemporary dance and music, but also on modern theatre and visual arts. At the beginning of the 20th century, Hellerau was regarded as a “laboratory of modernity”. After its decline due to war, today it is on the brink to becoming one of the most important centres of the contemporary arts in Germany and Europe once again. From September, the exhibition “Criticism Makes Art” is dedicated to the influential art critic, Will Groh mann, whose name is closely linked

to those of artists such as Kirchner, Klee, Kandinsky or Schmidt-Rottluff. Another museum that has long been closed for restoration reopens in autumn 2012: the famous Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments in the Zwinger features new exhibition rooms and a modern presentation. Place of ideas The wide range of attractions in Dresden is rooted in a strong tradition of art and cultural wealth in the city. Dresden has proved to be a fruitful place for innovation and ideas. Not only the city centre, filled with art history, but also the surrounding areas, the countryside

along the Elbe, used to be a source of inspiration for artists. Caspar David Friedrich, the well-known artist of the Romantic period, is just one example. The city’s creative potential continuously brings forth new creative currents and developments. Indicative of this is the flourishing niche culture in the Dresden Neustadt quarter. Scores of galleries, cultural centres, cabaret stages, studios, alternative projects, clubs and bars can be found there. tive of contemporary movements. Roots in tradition may equally be a curse and a blessing for the development of the city. Dresden is inseparably entangled with its history, but disentanglement seems necessary for progress. The Bundeswehr Museum of Military History, reopened in 2011, is a perfect example of this. Redesigned by Jewish-American architect Daniel Libeskind, a concretesteel wedge cuts through the historic building, visualising the struggles of the past, but also allowing an opening for engagement with history and future development.

Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra In 2011, Michael Sanderling took over the orchestra as the Principal Conductor. He is focussing on a series of concerts with the theme of love. A journey through the history of music relating to this universal subject that has inspired composers over and over again. The Dresden Philharmonic has a fine tradition of contrasting top international artists with young talents. This season, major artists, such as Bertrand de Billy, Katerina Karnéus, Dmitri Kitajenko, Michail Jurowski or Sir Roger Norrington, will once again be guest performers. The German premiere of Thomas Larcher’s piece “Red and Green”, a composition commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 2011, will be a very special concert. In addition to numerous performances of modern music, the orchestra is devoting itself to the rediscovery of Dresden’s music culture in the 1920s to early 1930s in its Dresden evenings in the Deutsches Hygiene

Museum. The orchestra is also playing host to the works of Charlie Chaplin again. A quartet of short films by Charlie Chaplin is shown. The music for the film comes from the film music veteran Carl Davis; it is conducted – in the usual way – by Helmut Imig. Markus Poschner shall continue his Beethoven series in his second year as the First Guest Conductor of the orchestra: symphonies No. 3, 7 and 8 are to follow, in combination with works of other composers that highlight the particular aspect of the revolutionary.

Dresden Zoo Distant worlds brought close! In the state capital of Saxony, discover the fourth oldest zoo in Germany with more than 2,000 animals of approx. 300 species. As part of the Großer Garten, only a few minutes away from the baroque city centre, Dresden Zoo offers a fascinating journey through the animal kingdom. The zoo’s highlights include the walkthrough Lemur Island, the Africa House, the Lion and Caracal Ravine, the Zebra Enclosure and the

Paulaner’s in the Taschenbergpalais This is the place to relax after a visit to the legendary Green Vault. This gastronomic treasure-trove is opposite the entrance to the treasury in the Royal Palace. Similarly, people like to meet at Paulaner’s before or after the opera – Semper’s masterpiece opera house is nearby, too. They feel welcome in a cosy atmosphere with excellent beer and good plain cooking. This is the recipe for success which has made Paulaner’s a widely popular address in the historical old town of Dresden. Apart from authentic Munich veal sausages and fried slices of meat loaf, the proven Bavarian classics, there are of course specialities such as braised knuckles of

Radeberger Spezialausschank With its consecration, the Frauenkirche became the most prominent building in the historical old town again. After seeing it, impressions are best digested over a beer – in the Radeberger Spezialbieraus schank round the corner. Another famous neighbour is the Semper Opera House. In the former bridge master’s house next to Brühl’s Terrace, four special tanks of shiny copper hold the golden yellow beer. One of the specialities is the Radeberger Zwickelbier, an unfiltrated, naturally cloudy Pilsner available nowhere else. Even famous statesmen do not miss out on this beer highlight: Vladimir Putin and Gerhard Schröder are two of those who have clinked their glasses here. Guests sit in rooms imbued with history. now the Radeberger Spezialbieraus schank was built as early as 1848. Schillergarten This thoroughly restored restaurant and café by the Blue Wonder bridge is a gem of Saxon gastronomy. The Art Nouveau elements, dark wood, sophisticated leather furniture and grand chandeliers of the interior indicate a famous French influence. At the same time, many details speak of the history of the restaurant, which itself influenced the history of the districts of Loschwitz and Blasewitz. The Schillergarten came into existence as early as 1730. The poet Friedrich Schiller, after whom it is named, was a regular. Apart from Schillergarten specialities such as Saxon style Sauerbraten and other hearty dishes there is good plain cooking, enriched by seasonal food. And there is the in-house patisserie with a

great variety of coffee specialities. The local Feldschlößchen brewery has its Feldschlößchen-SpezialBier served in the Schillergarten. A beer bottled specifically for the Schillergarten is the traditional Männel-Bier.
