LDR CHAR PIT…

A taste of Italy at…

A taste from Above! I grew up in Western New York just south of Rochester in the village of Geneseo. The “big” summer outing at least once a week was a trip to the local hamburger stand. The whole family would pile into the car and off we would go to our hamburger joint. These summer trips created endless summer memories filled with laughter, familiar friends and faces, and of course good eats. Over the years many of these places have disappeared, but fortunately today there are still a few places around. One recent hot day last summer, my family & I decided to head up to Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte for some swimming. It would be an understatement to say we were delighted to find LDR Char Pit in Charlotte. This is a neighborhood gem, a place for visiting old friends, exchange some neighborhood gossip and of course to enjoy some delicious summer eats.

Original owner Russ and his brother opened the LDR Char Pit in 1945 after they returned home from World II. Since then it has been a local favorite gathering place to enjoy a wide variety of food, and a place for friends and family to come together. Current owners Lou and Steve plan to keep the classic menu and add some new items while expanding the busy summer hours. The LDR Char Pit is a classic all-American diner offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A true jewel in the Rochester area for its wonderful service, varied menu, great values, down home atmosphere and more. Don’t miss a visit to LDR Char Pit. And of course, don’t forget to try their steak sandwich!

Mr. Dominic’s at the Lake Having traveled extensively throughout Italy, living there for months at a time, I will never forget the gracious hospitable people I met along the way. Many of whom I’m still in touch with to this day. They introduced me to true Italian food. Always pointing me in the right direction when I was seeking an off the beaten path place to relax and have dinner. I found Italian food to be extremely seductive and it was these out of the way treasures, trattoria’s and pizzeria’s known mainly to the locals, which became the mainstays of my daily feasts. Fortunately in my hometown of Rochester, NY, I have Mr. Dominic’s at the Lake which provides sumptuous– mouth watering, authentic Italian food.

Mr. Dominic’s has served the Rochester area for over 35 years with homemade sauces, hand crafted pastas, veal dishes and Italian specialties all made to order. Mr. Dominic’s always uses the freshest ingredients with their original family recipes passed down through many generations. Most of their cooks have been with them sinced they first opened. Mr. Dominic’s also has a full catering menu as well. If you’re looking for a taste of Italy in Rochester New York then stop at Mr. Dominic’s. You’ll be glad you did!

All in the Family with… BROTHERS COLLISION AND MECHANICAL In 1979, Dan & Bill Brothers opened Brothers Collision & Mechanical. That’s right, they’re brothers and what better name to use than “BROTHERS COLLISION”. What else were they going to call the place? Their vision for a family–owned collision repair shop that exceeded the expectations of their customers became a reality overnight. They soon moved from their modest three–bay shop to a state–of–the–art shop on Lake Avenue in Charlotte equipped with the latest collision repair equipment. In 1998, the Brothers launched the mechanical side of their business to meet the total car care needs of their customers. With today’s sophisticated computer–driven vehicles, collisions very often affect mechanical functioning, and now Brothers is better able to address all it’s customer’s needs. You can see a pattern here. When customers needs change, Brothers Collision & Mechanical is there to serve them. Brothers Collision & Mechanical hires trained technicians and mechanics in the Rochester, NY area who are willing to stay on top of the latest technology in the automotive industry through ongoing schooling and training. The shop takes pride in being up to date, clean and as efficient as possible to get your car, truck or SUV in and out as quickly as possible.

Herrema’s Marketplace Herrema’s marketplace was originally established by John and Helen Herrema in 1952 as the White City Grocery & Market located on Washington Avenue in what is known as White City in the Irondequoit NY region of the state. The business was purchased by Jack and Judy Herrema in 1974 from Jack and Judy. In February of 1987 the Herrema family relocated the store to the former Star Market location in the Stutson Bridge Plaza. Due to moving from the Rochester area the old owners Jack and Judy sold the business to David Breen in 1987. Herrema’s has undergone changes since then such as adding a garden center, and gas stations. Herrema’s offers freshly cut meats ranging in low prices from pit ham to pound boneless beef round cube steaks. All meats are freshly cut right in the store for the customers and satisfaction and to greet the customer with exactly what they want. There are grocery aisles, an in store bakery, fresh produce, and also a frozen foods section as well. There is always a weekly ad promoting all of the specials that Herrema’s Marketplace offers to customers on their website http://www. herremas.com/ where you can get their weekly specials. Herrema’s is a proud member of the Independent Grocers Alliance which is an alliance which was founded in 1926

with the purpose of bringing together independent grocers stores to ensure that the trusted family owned local grocery store still stood strong amongst a time of fast growing chain competition. An emphasis is placed on the entrepreneurial family spirit with IGA members that Herrema’s continues to uphold with pride. Herrema’s goal is not to be another one of those cookie-cutter chains, which is why it is a Independent Grocer Alliance store which stands out as distinctively unique, just like the community it serves in Irondequoit. Stop in your local Herrema’s Marketplace and experience the promise of neighborly service from people you know and trust. Herrema’s is located across from the Shumway Marina on 125 Pattonwood Drive in Irondequoit. Come into the store today and get a taste of what you were missing at Herrema’s Marketplace. Give back to your community today by shopping with a local independent owned store that Herrema’s prides itself on being. Don’t miss out on low gas prices, low food prices, and also an excellent store staff that is happy to satisfy your shopping needs today.

CAP Amusement…

Charlotte and Greater Rochester • Winter 2013

Calling All Bar & Restaurant Owners!

Carl Arthur Piccarreto (C.A.P-how we got our name) started the company in 1949. His first location was 1889 Bar and Grill on Clifford Ave. It was his father’s bar so he let his son put in a juke box. A juke box cost $125 at the time. Now they are about $6,500. In 1987 Carl built up to roughly 30 locations. In ‘87 Carl’s son (Carl Joseph very commonly known as C.J.) took over the company. C.J. is still the owner today and we now have over 200 bars, restaurants and sports complexes in Rochester and Buffalo. CAP Amusement has 8 employees. • CJ Piccarreto-Owner • Barbara Piccarreto-Owner (CJ’s wife) • Janell Piccarreto-Secretary (CJ’s first daughter) – this makes the 3rd generation involved in the business • 2 Service technicians-Dan Sturgis and Anthony Piccarreto (CJ’s second cousin) • 3 Collectors-John Oister, Peggy Hanna-Seaman and Jim Collins Many people don’t really know what we do. We own amusement machines and place them in locations.

The machines we supply include: • Juke boxes-Most popular! • Dart boards-Very popular! • Tables- pool tables, air hockey, foosball, etc. • Redemption-plush cranes, candy cranes, etc. • ATMs • Amusement games-Big Buck Hunter, Golden Tee Live, Pac Man, etc. • Megatouches (games that sit on the counter of the bar) In 2005 we started a traveling soft-tip dart league. We now have over 800 players during our long season. Soft-tip darting is one of the fastest growing recreational sports. How it works is a 2 or 4 person team signs up at one of our locations. They then travel to other teams’ home bars to play matches (about 13-17 games a night depending on the format). This creates business for our locations on Sun, Mon, Tues, and Wed. nights. We service small neighborhood bars all the way to corporate accounts such as Buffalo Wild Wings, Tully’s, Red Robin and Zebb’s.

Monroe Extinguisher Monroe Extinguisher Company, Inc was incorporated in 1972 by John B. Agness, as a fire protection sales and service company. In 1975 Monroe earned its Factory Mutual Approval on its recharge facility. Monroe Extinguisher is only one of two companies in New York State to hold this recognition. In 1976, after Mr. Agness passed away, management was transferred to Thomas J. Curtin. Mr. Curtin had been an employee of the company since 1972 and was certified for Ansul and Walter Kidde pre-engineered fire systems. By the end of the 1970s the company expanded throughout Western New York, servicing hand portables, pre-engineered fire systems and Halon engineered extinguishing systems. In 1980 Monroe began to install Commercial Kitchen Ventilation Systems. The market was changing and restaurants demanded a knowledgeable company that could install hoods according to the latest NFPA 96 regulations. One of the aspects that Monroe Extinguisher would like people to know is that OSHA requires all businesses to be fire protection certified which Monroe also can provide training on. Monroe offers this training for businesses which includes the explanation the P.A.S.S. procedure (Pull Aim Squeeze Swipe), a demonstration and hands on training DVD explaining procedures for combating various fire

configurations, and answers any of your questions regarding proper procedure. Monroe has worked closely with a metal fabrication company by the name of (Master Kitchen Equipment) to design prefabricated hood systems that would meet local codes, Insurance Services Offices regulations, and NFPA. On June 2nd of 1986 Monroe Extinguisher purchased Master Kitchen Equipment and changed their name to Monroe Kitchen Equipment. Monroe Kitchen is a custom metal fabrication company that manufactures NSF approved commercial kitchen equipment such as kitchen hoods, tables, cafeteria counters, dish tables, and even a kitchen sink including CAD drawing capability for engineers Now in a new millenium, Monroe Extinguisher Company is the leading distributor for fire safety equipment in Western New York. Our personnel are still some of the same people that started the business with Mr. Agness back in 1972. As our Corporate Mission Statement proclaims, we strive “to be the leading high quality provider of: fire protection systems, equipment, and service in the North Eastern United States. For our customers, we are committed to always meet or exceed expectations for quality, service, and delivery. For our employees, we are dedicated to growing the Company to provide job security and reward based on performance.”

Rare Gem of Genesee County…

Chapin Mill Retreat Center Tucked away, far off the road on the outskirts of Batavia, is a dream realized for the Rochester Zen Community. Chapin Mill Retreat Center, a 135 acre country estate, was donated to the Rochester Zen Center by Batavia’s own, the late Ralph Chapin. Ralph Chapin also played a key role in sparking the interest for what is now considered to be one of the oldest and most respected Zen communities in North America. Opening its doors in March of 1966, the Rochester Zen Center started out with 22 members, and grew into its current community including members and affiliates throughout the United States, Europe, Mexico, and New Zealand. The Rochester Zen Center lies right in the heart of the city of Rochester, lacking the space and rural open feel of a retreat center for its members. In 1996, upon the occasion of the Zen Center’s 30th anniversary, Ralph Chapin donated the Chapin Mill property to the Center. In a letter to the

The environment certainly supports it’s mission. The peaceful interior invites you to sit and just ‘be’ for a while. “Meditation changes a person for the better”, states Zen Priest and Caretaker Wayman Kubicka. “Through meditation, we get out of the I, me, and mine way of thinking. It makes one more aware, and therefore better able to respond to others (to serve).” The Rochester Zen Center and Chapin Mill Retreat Center enable people to develop spiritualism through meditation and awareness training.

Chapin Mill Retreat Center in Batavia is open to the public on most Tuesday nights for meditation. If it is your first time meditating with them, please call ahead to schedule a 45 minute – 1 hour introduction before sitting in meditation. I urge you all to take advantage of this wonderful facility. Contact Wayman or Eryl Kubicka at (585)343-5684 or visit www.rzc.org for more details.

Center’s members, Ralph commented, “This is all an accumulation of years of thinking about how Chapin Mill could be used by the Center to continue building a strong and active Sangha, a strengthened transmission of Zen teaching, and the potential for a larger community to benefit from the many levels of Zen practice.” —Ralph Chapin The dream was to have a rural retreat center offering its guests an easy, peaceful flow from meditation, to meals, talks, and work or exercise purposes. Not only do the grounds of Chapin Mill offer 135 acres of beautiful, quiet nature, it is host to one of the most impressive Zen facilities around. Generally the Retreat Center is rented out by groups for their retreats. There is no requirement that participants subscribe to the Buddhist path. The mission of Chapin Mill is simply meditation or prayer, and the goal is to work in various ways to serve all beings.

Welcome to!

Awakenings

Holistic Center

“Until man duplicates a blade of grass, Nature can laugh at his so-called ‘scientific’ knowledge. Remedies from chemicals will never stand in favor compared with the products of Nature, the living cell of the plant, the final result of the rays of the Sun, the Mother of all life.” —Thomas Edison There are so many things that make Awakenings Holistic Center unique. When you step in the front door of this quaint two story center, you’ll immediately notice a warm comforting feeling welcoming you in. You may feel drawn to explore the large selection of minerals and crystals, unique spirit artwork by local artisans, or sit down and enjoy a cup of tea while looking through the extensive library on everything mind, body, and spirit. In addition to their retail shop, Awakenings Holistic Center has two comfortable therapy rooms for alternative, natural therapies, and one room designed for counsel. Co-owners and practitioners, Richard Wallace and Antoinette Sidari opened the center in 2011 with the mission of providing comprehensive holistic care at affordable prices. “We strive first to arrive at the core issue of the presenting symptoms, and then offer our clients not just a service to help them correct it, but knowledge and education for creating new habits in their lives. The client is an active participant in the process, and leave with not only a feeling of peace and well-being, but tools for carry-over into their everyday lives. We offer them a tremendous amount of support, and new perspective for the future.” The practitioners at Awakenings are certified in many different modalities of natural approaches, as well as, having a combined 20+ years of study

and experience in the holistic arena. Awakenings Holistic Center does offer some stand alone therapies, such as Integrated Energy Therapy, and the Amethyst Bio-Mat, but the practitioners tend to stay away from the approach of making stand alone therapies their business. “There are many natural therapies out there, such as Reiki, Massage, Acupuncture, Cranio-Sacral, IET, etc., but when these natural therapies are offered as a stand alone treatment only, the results are almost always temporary. We encourage each new client to take advantage of our comprehensive initial assessment so we can first see exactly where the problem areas are. Once we know what areas truly need to be addressed, then we tailor a program and therapies around that. It’s like harmony by design, and our clients are able to really see results almost immediately. As part of our program service, we reassess the ‘problem areas’ weekly to get the hard data of how it is benefitting them.” Awakenings Holistic Center is conveniently located on Route 5, approximately 4 miles West from Tops in Batavia, NY. Store hours are from 11 – 5pm on Fridays, and 10 – 3pm on Saturdays. All service appointments are by appointment only. Call (585) 418 – 5065 with any questions, or to set up your appointment today. A Gust of Sun Winery… Want to find a fantastic and unique winery? Check out A gust of Sun Winery and Vineyard at 4515 Baer Rd., Ransomville, N.Y. 14131. These guys are awesome. They seem to have it all. This winery has been open since Aug., 2011 (almost 16 months). Shane and Erik Gustafson met each other at Purdue University in Indiana and found that they both had a high appreciation for wine. They both took wine appreciation courses and eventually became certified through U.C. Davis. They then started producing wine in an underground facility from their home. In 2008, the couple relocated to Iowa, but did not like the particular types of grapes that this environment produced. So given that Erick was a New York native from the Rochester area, they decided to once again relocate, but this time to Western N.Y., specifically Niagara County. They were most impressed with The Niagara Wine Trail which promoted an area with exceptional potential yet not as fully developed as the Finger Lakes region. The Niagara County area was under development and the Gustafsons felt this was an up and coming area. They felt that they had found the perfect location for them.

And so their dream started to turn into a reality. There is now an upstairs lounge complete with a service bar with seating, two large living room style seating areas, two barrel tables with bar stools, many books, periodicals, board games, a computer, projector, large screen, Blue Ray player, stereo, and more! This lounge is open to the public during most business hours, but is large enough to be leased for many different kinds of private functions. A Gust of Sun is a relatively new winery in Niagara County, just 30 miles from Buffalo and 20 miles from Niagara Falls. This winery and vineyard is already producing a fine line of wines. Check out the website http://www.agustofsun.com or call for further details on location, announcements, specials, wine and chocolate pairings in the famous and much praised “Tastings Plus”. The Gustafsons have also become part philanthropists with some of the proceeds from their two top selling diamond wines going to help support Diamonds in the Ruff, a local animal rescue charity. They seem to do it all.
