WELCOME TO THE PROGRESSIVE PRESCHOOL AWARDS 2021 And now we’re back! We’ve always enjoyed being an event organiser, there’s a huge amount of joy at knowing you have connected people, rewarded excellence, created new friendships and even business deals by putting lovely people under one roof. But this year we feel like the organiser of Grand Reunions. The PPS Awards represents our sixth awards event since September and this one feels a bit special, because it’s always been a bit special, in the way that it’s a cross category event - merging various subsectors of the preschool product and retail community together. We will be eternally grateful to you all for standing by us last year, in 2020, when we had no other option than to run awards by screen. The true winner was probably our friends at Majestic Wine, as you all stocked up ready for your party-for-one, but what it did represent was your unwavering determination to keep your industry awards event alive. And, without that, it would have been a struggle to be here today. So to all of you, thank you. Awards are an industry collaboration - we as organisers just stir the ingredients - with this sector in particular really getting what it means to hand out trophies to deserving winners. And how deserving are they this year? We all know the answer to that. While the physical judging days and infamous round-table debates have still been on hold, using the power of technology such

Awards 2021 as our awards entry portal and Zoom calls to debate special ﬁnalists and winners across retail, marketing and the people that make it happen, this event has remained as judged by you. A great thank you to all of you - the buyers who judged products, the suppliers who voted for retailers, Mr Richard Pink and his marketing posse for what is always a lively category, and everyone else who nagged us to be involved. There have been winners and losers in the last 18 months but today we stand equal. We stand together, clink glasses and enjoy being in the company of those who have been in the same ﬁght as you. They say that children’s resilience is something adults can learn from; actually the resilience of those who make children’s lives richer with amazing products and brands - they’re a pretty resilient bunch too, as it turns out. THE JUDGING PROCESS 2021 Below: This year’s Progressive Preschool Awards will be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on London’s Park Lane.

JUDGING THE WINNERS Despite life returning to a certain degree of normality this year, the decision was made to keep the entry and judging processes for the Progressive Preschool Awards online only once again. With new product development continuing behind the scenes across all sectors of the preschool market and retailers showing how resilient they are, there was a huge number of entries across all award categories once again this year. We take a look at the entry and judging processes for the PPS Awards 2021.

he PPS team were once again blown away by the volume and quality of entries across all award categories. It has been evident that despite ongoing restrictions in late 2020 and the beginning of 2021, that brands and retailers were still working tirelessly on new product development and ensuring the service they offered their customers was not compromised.

With the online entry and judging processes already set up on the bespoke website from the previous year, the PPS Awards 2021 were all set and ready to go in the spring of this year. And the industry once again did not disappoint! The portal was inundated with both product entries and nominations for the retail categories as soon it went live.

THE PRODUCT AWARDS With many products delayed due to the events of the last 18 months, there was a huge response to the product categories for 2021. It was clear that product development has still been a high priority for preschool brands and this showed in the record number of entries received during the entry process. The criteria for the product categories remained the same as in previous

years, with all entries required to be new to market between 8 July 2020 and 7 July 2021, already in retail, with entries either being a single product, or a range with up to ﬁve products. The online judging portal opened in the summer and the team welcomed a record number of buyers from a wide spectrum of retailers to judge all of the products entered.

With non-essential retail closed for much of the early part of 2021 there was a huge shift to online and social media sales activity, both for major and independent retailers. The resilience and creativity that these retailers showed was nothing short of extraordinary! With many consumers looking to shop more locally during the pandemic independent retailers, in particular, were there to support their local communities and offer different ways to service their customers, including door-step deliveries, video appointments and WhatsApp groups! This led to a huge number of nominations for the retail categories, as suppliers wanted these retailers to be rewarded for their hard work during this time. The retail judging panel certainly had a huge task to decide which retailers would make the shortlist this year!

THE MARKETING AWARD Consumer marketing for brands has been more important than ever this year as the ways children and families engaged with the world changed. There was a wide variety of entries this year covering all aspects of the preschool sector. The judging for the Marketing Award was carried out virtually in September, with Richard Pink, md of Pink Key Licensing chairing the process. He was joined by Paul Godwin from PCG Consultants, Katie Gritt from Just Play, Georgina Dobie from Evolution PR, Amber Steventon from Azaria PR, Katie Rollings from Hasbro, James Marsh from B3 Media and Louise O’Shea from License to PR. Amber Steventon (left), md of Azaria PR sponsors of the Marketing Award commented: "In any industry, it is important to take the time to celebrate the successes; the highs, the wins, the smiles and the positivity.
