e created from scans of the phot ographs in the au thor’s collection of Cabi net Cards & Cartes de Visite from the American Gilded Age, 1865 to 1900. I discovered much about the photogra phers who took these im ages, but found ne xt to nothing about the people themse lves. So, in a sense, they were already in a “metaphoric” clos et, their inner se lves hidden forever be hind the outer se lves captured by the ca mera. ‑Max Singer
