EDITOR’S LETTER Get in the hole....

“Oh please, not at Augusta”

My editor’s letter for this issue is prompted by the constant comments I receive from avid golf fans who are outraged by the crowd behaviour at some events on the US tour. My response used to be “at least it never happens at Augusta”.

Many have mentioned to me that they find this so irritating and offensive that they are fast losing interest in watching TV coverage whilst it is allowed to continue, without even a warning.

Second to the Open Championship, the Major I most look forward to is the Masters and 2009 was one to be remembered. The Green Jackets had set up the course to yield more birdies and eagles which created plenty of cheering from the patrons and a good atmosphere. This is how it should be.

On the US PGA Tour some are now bellowing “Get in the hole!” on every tee, it seems, and even more ridiculously, when players are teeing off on par-4 and par-5 holes! By comparison, if tennis fans were to shout out during a player’s serve at Wimbledon they would certainly be duly warned and then escorted out of the courts if necessary.

However, during the Masters this year some fans were in such a hurry to shout out “Get in the hole!” and “You’re the man” as Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods hit their tee shots that they screamed out in unison. This is despised by the true golfing fans, myself included, and more importantly the players themselves. Furthermore, allowing this to continue really throws a wrench into everything that the Masters Committee has built up Augusta to be.

At this year’s Masters, Nick Faldo made a remark along the lines of “Oh please, not at Augusta” when a spectator yelled “get in the hole” as Tiger Woods teed off at the16th. I am surprised that more commentators don’t outwardly condemn these idiots during broadcasts. For the sake of the players, true golfing fans and TV viewers, I hope this problem is addressed very shortly otherwise some of the US tour events could soon become a Major turn off!

I seem to remember a time when any type of yelling out from patrons at the Masters, as players were teeing off, was forbidden and that anyone caught doing so would be escorted off the grounds. Can anyone confirm this? SEAN HARRISON

Charming and sophisticated, The Manhattan 60 will impress your guests and at the same time put them at ease, with spacious living areas and immaculate accommodation.

Manhattan 60

19

Sociability is the key in the Manhattan 60’s design, with a completely open main deck plan with flowing walkway and seating areas blending saloon and wheelhouse, all flooded by natural light and open views. Enhancing the openness of the upper deck, the galley this time is below on the lower deck accessed by an attractive stairway to port of the helm station allows the crew or chef to prepare meals away from view, thus allowing undisturbed lounging or watching TV in the saloon. The three sleeping cabins, master suite,VIP suit and twin cabin, chare the same intrinsic quantities of fitting, finish, headroom and natural light with flourishes that continue to separate Sunseeker from other boat builders. A popular mid-range option the Manhattan 60 provides pace and space in a craft that family and friends can operate comfortably on their own. But if a crew is required a neat aft cabin with full facilities for two can be specified. Alternatively this space can be used as a private cabin to boost guest sleeping accommodation to eight or as storage cum laundry adding to the extended cruising potential of this capable flybridge model.

Manhattan 60 20

Up on the flybridge with its commanding helm station, sunpad, wetbar and large wraparound dining area, the emphasis on open-air comfort is clear, and cooling shade can be provided with the option of bimini covers. Beneath the wheelhouse nerve center still connects with the outside world with a starboard-hand practical Pantograph big-ship door that the sleek external styling all but conceals.

47 Portofino 47

Bringing the big-bodied and outdoor-life Portofino theme bang up to date, the Portofino 47 can be specified either as an open cockpit craft or topped with the stylish, retracting hard top.

New detailing also introduces the submerging bathing platform which doubles as slip for the tender. The accommodation on the lower deck revolves around a large saloon and well-equipped galley with a master stateroom forward and a twin bed cabin aft, both en suite. The cockpit above incorporates companionable seating forward adjacent to the helm station with a second social area aft with seating, wetbar and sunpad. Drive options include the conventional twin FP props in tunnels, but also Volvo Penta’s IPS system of forward-facing pod drives that are computer and joy-stick controlled and provide one of the simplest maneuvering systems available. Mirror your eye-line to the dock with a joystick movement and the software will do the rest, adjusting the two drive angles to walk you and your boat directly into the berth. Maneuvering made easy or, in the words of Volvo, the joystick revolution. Cruising range for the Portofino 47? Up to 200 miles at 22 knots; top speed with the 1150 PS option is 34 knots.

Ile aux Cerfs is reached by a ‘golfing special’ water taxi, which takes seven minutes to cross the lagoon from the resort. Arrival is on a jetty beside a large white sand spit on the lagoon side of the island. Bernhard Langer designed the course to challenge advanced players, while remaining exciting and playable for recreational golfers. This is achieved with four sets of tee decks for each hole, so the angles of attack and approach vary. There is a generous provision of fairway where appropriate. The greens are mainly small and undulating, requiring precise approach shots. The 87 hectare Ile Aux Cerfs island has a coastline of little bays, inlets and promontories – natural undulating topography, volcanic rock outcrops, lakes and gullies, and a variety of tropical trees and plants. The course covers 38 hectares and is the second longest in Mauritius, with the holes snaking up and down the length of the island. All 18 holes have views of the ocean – some with glimpses across clearings through the trees; others by coming close to the shore. Expansive white sand bunkers and water set off the natural backdrop of trees andvegetation perfectly. Water is an essentialfeature of the course. There are nine lakes in all, and three of the holes require tee shots across sea inlets to the fairways. The luscious turf is Salam Seashore Paspalum grass, which is resilient in the tropical climate and allows the highest standards of course conditioning.

Black Mountain shines as Johan Edfors carves his way to an Asian Tour victory

Editorial by Ian Lenton

Black Mountain

In what can be described as a dominant performance, Johan Edfors has made a name for himself in Asia with his start-tofinish victory at the Black Mountain Masters 2009. Edfors, known for his big hitting off the tee, made a four under par 68 in the final round to take the title by two shots from Thailand’s Prayad Marksaeng. Making his first win since 2006, Edfors was in control for most of the contest but did make the result closer with some late errant shots. “I guess I made it too exciting. I wasn’t planning on doing that,” smiled Edfors. “I made a couple of poor shots and bad decisions and then had to really fight for it at the end.” Edfors was in control until a wild drive that landed behind a tree. This led to a double bogey on the 15th and brought him into a tie for the lead. Bouyed on by a cheering Swedish crowd in the coastal resort town of Hua Hin, he bounced back with a 10-foot birdie on the 16th to regain a one-shot lead and then wrapped up formalities with another birdie on the 18th from 15 feet to earn the winner’s cheque of US$79,250. “I knew that the last three holes, I could shoot low. No one had made a charge except for Prayad who played a fantastic round. I knew I had it in my hands and knew that I needed to perform in the last few holes,” said Edfors. “This is one of the nicest wins of my career as I’ve not had so many Swedes supporting me during my other wins.” In fact, Hua Hin seems to be increasing in popularity with the

28

Scandinavian set. With its white sandy beaches, perfect weather conditions and now a world class golf course only a few minutes from town, it can be understood why the Swedes are coming in their droves. With Black Mountain Golf Club gaining a large amount of international exposure through the television and other media coverage for this event, many foreign golfers will undoubtedly be choosing Hua Hin for their next holiday. For the avid golfer that searches for a “special” round of golf, Black Mountain recently announced that they will be maintaining the course to competition standard year round. This will enable players to participate in a game of golf that will enthral as much as it will test their game. Those who either attended the Black Mountain Masters or even watched the television coverage would have noticed that positioned directly on some of Black Mountains fairways are their luxury villa’s and condominium’s. Fifteen stunning pool villas have now been constructed and all boast outstanding golf course views from both levels. Villa A, the largest of the two styles, has its main living area on the ground floor, overlooking the terrace, pool and the manicured fairways. Villa B, is the opposite layout with its main living area, and pool, on the top level. This gives the resident a high vantage of the course and the coming event. Alongside the villa’s is the 89 condominum development. Here, designers have not only created a luxury, affordable apartment, but have ensured that each one takes advantage of the views from their private balconies.

For the avid golfer that searches for a “special round of golf, Black Mountain recently announced that they will be maintaining the course to competition standard year round. This will enable players to participate in a game of golf that will enthral as much as it will test their game.

Inside the layout is large and spacious and no expense has been spared to ensure a luxury finish that suits this kind of development. Whether it’s for an investment, second home or full time residence, these apartments will certainly please anyone that chooses to purchase. As a bonus offer, Black Mountain is currently offering four (4) lifetime memberships to the club, with the purchase of one of their properties. This exclusive membership allows access to all of the first class facilities that are on offer. Inside the clubhouse is the courses prestigious restaurant. Diners experience not only the relaxing views of the course but also first class dining with some of the regions best international cuisine. One will undoubtedly also be surprised that unlike other venues, the menu is particularly affordable and brings the local residents back time and time again. For the competitive golfer that strives for improved golfing ability, Black Mountains driving range is the perfect place for regular practice. This 200 yard range, which is covered in real grass, as perfect as the course fairways, making a practice session as real as possible. Another way that Black Mountain treats its golfers is with its after golf locker room facilities. Both men’s and women’s rooms feature luxury facilities including Jacuzzi spa and private massage rooms. These are extra’s but at 300 baht for a pampering massage it won’t break the bank. Currently with the Summer season in full swing, the course is also now offering golfers a special green fee price of only 1,500 baht per round (valid until 31/10/09).This is outstanding value for money with the condition of the course in mind. Whether you are currently in Hua Hin or planning a golfing holiday, give Black Mountain a try, you will not be disappointed with anything on offer at Black Mountain Golf Club. Henrik Stenson

In May, Henrik Stenson won The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass with a final round of 66 to finish four shots ahead of Ian Poulter. The victory moved him up to 5th place in the World Rankings. Recently, Paul Mahoney caught up with the inform Swede. Please explain that now famous almost naked underwear shot in Miami? I felt like if I could hack it out of the mud, I could make a five and that is what I did. But I didn’t have any rain gear. I was only wearing two things when I hit the shot - my jocks and my golf glove. Just the way God created me. I don’t think I’ll ever hear the end of that. Maybe I’ll get a phone call from Playgirl? You have a reputation for being a prankster. True or false? I don’t think I will ever grow up. (laughs). When we were playing in China, once, I bought a pen that gave you an electric shock when you clicked the top to make the nib come out. I went along the range all week getting guys to write down their email addresses. No one trusts me with a pen anymore. And at the 1998 Eisenhower Trophy (the amateur team championships) in Chile, I found water balloons in the supermarket and we filled them up and chucked them out of the hotel windows. Why do you wear those wraparound shades? My eyes are very sensitive to light so it’s better than walking around squinting all the time. I’ve had them since 1997. I don’t wear them if it’s raining, though. Oakley will have to design ones with wipers on the front. Has playing in Tiger’s era been good or bad for you? It a good thing to be able to measure myself against possibly the best player ever. And I have managed to win while he’s been playing, too. And that’s what I’m going to have to do to win majors. And he’s brought great attention and wealth to the game for all of us. Are you living the dream? People watch us on TV and see beautiful courses and trophies and big cheques. But that’s just the top players. There are many out here struggling to pay their mortgages and provide for their families. I have been very fortunate.

33

Henrik Stenson 34

What was your first car and what do you drive now? When I turned 18 I inherited my parents’ old BMW 320. It was white, which is obviously a great colour to have in Sweden in winter with all that slush and snow (smiles). It was my first love. I still drive BMW’s but I have a Porsche in Dubai, and a BMW M6 and an X5 for the family. I can still squeeze the family in to the Porsche. What’s on your iPod? I’ve been listening to Coldplay, Keane and Snow Patrol. That kind of laid back rock sound. But I also like a bit of a disco beat, too. I can fall asleep to Eurobeat sounds – but not too much of that techno psychedelic stuff. I like classical, too.

What’s your karaoke song?

Have you ever choked?

‘With Or Without You’ by U2. My wife caught me singing along to it at home once and now she always teases me to get up and sing it. Or ruin it.

Yeah. I think everybody has. If you think too much about the outcome, you can lose your way but you can still win even though you haven’t been able to control yourself the way you wanted to. In my first year as a pro, I was playing in a tournament in Argentina at the home course of Angel Cabrera and Eduardo Romero. I was leading by four shots over Romero with four holes to play and he won. I made rookie mistakes taking too much club and hitting over greens and made two bogies while he made two birdies. That was a choke.

What’s the most pressure you’ve ever felt? When your caddie is rattling in the bag to see if he’s got any provisionals left when you’re standing over a drive, you know you’ve got a problem (laughs). In 2001 at the K Club I had no idea where the hell my drives were going to go. One was flying 400 yards left and the next one was going 400 yards right. And then there is the 1st tee in the Ryder Cup or playing with Tiger in a big tournament. You can certainly feel yourself shaking and your hands feel like jelly.

What motivates you? I’m not so sure I dreamt of being World No.1 but I definitely dreamt of playing in the Ryder Cup and winning majors. I’ve ticked one of those off my list. If I stopped tomorrow I would be very happy with my career but I hope I can win one, two, three of four majors. It is not likely that you are going to win too many times in a season. Two is lucky, but you are only ever one week away from a victory.

After winning the 36th Ryder Cup Matches 2006, K Club, Ireland

Were your problems technical or mental? It started with bad shots and then became a mental problem. I even practised hitting balls with my eyes shut because I was thinking too much about what I was trying to do. I became scared to hit the ball. All I could see were hazards rather than opportunities. Did you ever come close to quitting? I was the first guy on the range and the last guy off, and I would still play like crap. But I kept fighting and never really considered walking away from the game. Everyone gets like that but some players handle it better than others. Someone once said that the one who wins is the player who chokes the least.

World Champions - Sweden. With playing partner Robert Karlsson after winning the 2008 Omega Mission Hills World Cup of Golf - Mission Hills Golf Club, China

What keeps you going when you know you can’t win? When you know you are too far back going into the weekend, there are still world ranking points and Ryder Cup points to play for and now there’s the Race to Dubai. But there have been times when, you know, tied for 63rd on a Saturday, I admit I have given up. But if you try to finish like a champion, even though it might only be to finish 58th, it gives you positive momentum for the following week. Are you a Seve or a Faldo man? Both, really. I would prefer to be a Faldo man to have a longer career – you know, keeping the ball on the fairway and not 35

getting into too much trouble. But it’s more thrilling to watch Seve and play that way, hitting it sideways and getting up and down from all over the place. A hybrid of them would be the ultimate golfer.

if they wanted to but there has to be a limit. Courses can still be made difficult with firmer greens guarded by bunkers and water, thicker rough and tighter fairways. I’m not a fan of these monster courses. Whatever happened to great shortiron par threes?

Is science killing golf? Are we hitting more greens that they did 50 years ago? I don’t think we are. The best players still miss four or five greens a round no matter what equipment we are using. OK, the courses are longer and tougher but the skill of players hasn’t changed that much. But it is harder to shape the ball now. Every sport evolves. Tennis players don’t use wooden racquets and we don’t play with persimmon clubs. They could make the ball fly 400 yards

With caddy Fanny Sunesson

Henrik Stenson

What’s the worst pro-am disaster you’ve witnessed? There was one when a journalist (I’ll keep his name secret to save his embarrassment) looked like he swung a very aggressive practice swing on the 1st tee. Then he did it again. Then we realised they weren’t practice swings. He had whiffed two and on the third swing he hit the ball so much on the heel of the driver that he almost took his left leg off and the ball just trickled down into the water. And he turns and says “I haven’t played much lately”, and I thought, ‘Really!’ There was a guy in Portugal once who hit his divot over the ball and covered it completely. What characteristics do you dislike about yourself? My self-discipline could always be a notch higher. If it really gets into me that I need to do something, then I do it. But sometimes I could work harder. What do you complain about in hotels? Small things drive me mad. Like if there is a button on the telephone in your room to press for room service but it doesn’t work or nobody answers. Why do they even bother putting it on the phone? That is so annoying. What is your life motto? Honesty and respect. Do we live by them all the time? Probably not. 36

Hurdy New fashion by

Druh Belts & Buckles, a unique range of stylish fashion accessories, was launched internationally at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, and now has the potential to make huge inroads into the golf fashion market in 2009.

39

The brainchild of Touring Professional Simon Hurd of England, Druh* Belts & Buckles have up until now been the golf professionals’ style secret with six Major winners, two current Ryder Cup players, 60 European Tour players and over 50 Asian Tour players all paying customers, wearing and loving Druh Belts & Buckles. Hurdy, as he is known on Tour, has in the past been known for the distinctive and colourful pork pie hats he dons on

the golf course. But not for much longer as his Druh Belts & Buckles offer the discerning golfer a selection of stylish handmade leather and snakeskin belts in sumptuous classic and chic casual styles. Already his designs in classic black and browns and funky pastels and metallics are spreading like wildfire amongst the vaulted ranks of Touring Pros and three-time Ryder Cup winner and multiple champion on The European Tour, Paul McGinley, has been signed up as a Druh Belts & Buckles ambassador. “Even as a golf pro, I have always taken an interest in fashion both on and off the golf course, so it seemed a natural sideline for me to go into,” says Hurdy, a smart dresser with welltailored attire. “In fact I have been dressed by William Hunt of Savile Row, London, for the past three years and I soon realised that looking smart means playing smart. “I have a particular passion for belts and traveling the world. I have always found it difficult to find stylish, good quality belts, so I started designing my own and commissioned a local leather craftsman in Thailand to handmake them. So many friends and fellow golfers liked them that I decided it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start a business out of it. “Golf gear is often perceived as rather staid and dull so I wanted to have a bit of fun designing belts and buckles that were a little bit funky, yet stylish, and certainly they have been an instant hit with pro golfers all over the world. And now it is the chance for all those amateurs out there to smarten up their golf look with one of my Druh belts!” The leather belt range is handmade in ten water snakeskins, ranging from turquoise to pink and 15 leathers in different embossed styles, from crocodile to ostrich effect. Druh’s interchangeable buckles in brushed nickel, polished silver or gold mean their belts can be customised to look smart on or off the course.

40

Druh Belts & Buckles are guaranteeing all golfers the onset of a purple patch of form with news that it is to produce a limited edition of just 100 purple leather belts with a silver buckle that will come individually numbered from 1 to 100. “Whilst we obviously can’t guarantee to instantaneously raise the standard of a golfer’s individual game, we can ensure that they look good on the golf course with this unusual and eyecatching Druh ‘Purple Patch’ belt,” comments Simon Hurd, founder of Druh Belts & Buckles.

“As I have always maintained, looking smart means playing smart and any confidence gained by looking good on the fairways will certainly not harm your game.” In addition to the excusive Druh purple belt, Hurd has designed a debonair tan giraffe-pattern leather belt with silver buckle that is also being sold as a limited edition. Druh Belts & Buckles, funky yet stylish handmade leather and snakeskin belts in sumptuous classic and chic casual styles, recently caught the eye of Robert Karlsson, Sweden’s most prolific golfer on The European Tour. A long-time quirky dresser with his own individual style, Karlsson now joins Paul McGinley as a Druh ambassador sporting Druh belts both on and off the golf course. Available through the internet, the site allows golfers to design their own unique belt by choosing their own belt and buckle combination. Each belt ordered comes with your selected buckle & strap plus a standard buckle and is stylishly gift wrapped in a drawstring pouch so ideal to give as a present.

Three-time Ryder Cup winner and multiple champion on The European Tour, Paul McGinley, has been signed up as a Druh Belts & Buckles ambassador.

The event is part of Laguna Phuket’s corporate social responsibility initiative to raise funds to provide more opportunities for aspiring athletes with intellectual disabilities from the southern regions of Thailand to compete in the Regional and potentially the National or World Special Olympic Games. The weekend’s programme kicked off on Saturday 28 March with a charity golf tournament at Laguna Phuket Golf Club featuring 16 golf teams playing with the ESS presenters. Later, more than 160 people joined the charity dinner and auction night at the Sheraton Grande Laguna, hosted by veteran ESS presenter John Dykes. Guest speaker, English football legend Steve McMahon, entertained dinner guests with a question and answer session, plus anecdotes from his professional football career. There was also an auction featuring sports and entertainment memorabilia including autographed jerseys from Liverpool United and David Beckham, guitars signed by Bruce Springsteen and Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, as well as a Maradona jersey signed by ‘The Hand of God’ himself and plenty of other fantastic items.

Michael Ayling, managing director of Laguna Resorts & Hotels Plc commented, “The ESPN STAR Sports charity weekend has rapidly become a favourite in the Laguna Phuket calendar during the past three years. The international media presence of the ESS team plus the world class golf and hospitality of Laguna Phuket form a winning combination to raise money and awareness for important causes in Thailand . This year, I am particularly satisfied that the event managed to do so much to support the Special Olympics Thailand and bring the benefit of sport to those less fortunate than ourselves. I am also delighted that a 30 minute TV programme dedicated to the event will be aired on ESPN STAR Sports in June.” Phuket locals showed great support for the charity event, sponsored by Kingfisher Premium Lager Beer and Wine & Taste, and enjoyed the opportunity to get up close and personal with TV personalities, whilst supporting a deserving cause. Sunday 29 March saw a Football Fun Day at the British International School take place with activities including football clinics and friendly seven-aside football matches between the ESPN STAR Sports team and the Phuket Reporters Club, British International School teachers and students. There was also a ‘unified’ game with students from the British International School and the Special Olympics students. 43

Essentially, the ProStance makes it more difficult for the golfer to stay in balance ensuring that the body works very quickly to adjust to its conditions. Within a few swings, without thinking, you are able to identify where your weaknesses lie and begin to refine your balance. Standing on the ProStance highlights where your weight is concentrated and will tune your body for improved balance. Dr Paul Hurrion, coach to the likes of Harrington, McGinley and Brewerton and Director of ProStance, comments, “In order to maximise control and stability, a balanced set-up position is crucial to the performance of the golf swing. It is vital for the individual to stand balanced at address. Any significant variation at set-up will only lead to compensations during the golf swing and inconsistent results. “Until recently, the only way to determine if an individual was perfectly balanced was to use force / pressure platforms that are not feasible or accessible to the majority of golfers. With ProStance we have developed a simple yet effective alternative at the fraction of the price with the same end result.”

The Base for every successful golf swing Revolutionary training aid, ProStance, is set to become the must-have tool for any golfer wanting to improve their game. Whilst relatively new to the golf market following three years of research and development with both professionals and amateurs alike, over 70 Tour pros including three-time major winner Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley, Bradley Dredge, Philip Archer, Richard Finch and Becky Brewerton are already putting their trust in this unique product. Whilst results at the elite level of the game include improving driving distance by up to 27 yards and reducing putts per round by four strokes, this simple balance aid is steadily confirming its position as one of the most-advanced, yet simple, game improvement tools on the market. In layman’s terms, the ProStance is an inflatable balance aid that ensures weight is concentrated through the centre of gravity of the golfer’s body. The result is improved balance leading to powerful, more reliable ball striking and smoother, more consistent putting strokes. 44

With the ability to inflate or deflate the tube inside the ProStance, the product can be tailored to the size and weight of each individual. Harrington is full of praise for the product, “The ProStance is a great tool for any golfer at any level. Balance is the key to the golf swing as it enables the body to make a controlled and repeatable golf swing. Without the correct balance, your mechanics are a series of compensatory movements. “The ProStance helps build balance and stability for every part of the game from putting and chipping to the full swing,” he concludes. European Tour stalwart Paul McGinley, has his own ideas: “The ProStance has simplified my golf swing and allows me to make more powerful, efficient and, most of all, consistent swings.” ProStance gives you instant feedback during every swing. So simple yet effective, it is the base for every successful golf swing and set to revolutionise the way that golf is taught. ProStance is now available throughout Asia at selected retail outlets at a recommended retail price of US$79.00.

Private Aviation Never see the

inside of an airport again!

59

Imagine the scene: your plane lands, you encounter no queue at security, walk straight to a waiting car and within minutes are on the tee of your dream golf course relaxed and ready to go. Now picture those golfers flying commercially: barely off the plane and yet to collect their clubs at the carousel (hoping the airline did in fact load them) ... a few shots behind and they haven’t even started their game. The past 18 months has again seen a rash of headlines involving lost luggage, endless delays and lax security. The fiascos at Heathrow and beyond have reinforced the view of many that flying is a tiresome means to an end, to be endured as your patience is tried. However, increasing numbers of frequent fliers barely see the inside of an airport at all. In spite of the current economic downturn, interest in private jet travel is still high – particularly for NetJets Europe with its fractional ownership model. When you fly with NetJets Europe, you’re able to control the costs of private travel to what you need, gain access to an aircraft wherever you are, and flex your requirements to additional jets if needed, all on short notice. You’re also assured that your pilots and aircrew are the best trained in the world, and the headache of aircraft maintenance and the associated logistics are left to the experts. Warren Buffett backed NetJets Europe, the largest business jet company in Europe, is the only provider capable of delivering on this promise. With 165 aircraft NetJets operates four times as many aircraft as the next largest business operator.

plane every detail is perfectly aligned to their needs. On board every flight is a satellite phone, the customer’s favourite drinks and meals, the customer’s favourite magazines and newspapers, a world-class selection of music and films, and the peace and quiet necessary for the customer to sit back and relax, or bring out the laptop and get some work done. Flying privately gives you freedom. As well as allowing you to decide when to fly, it lets you explore areas that perhaps may not be as accessible by commercial aviation and buys you valuable time to visit more destinations over the course of your trip. Your own plane means you can even fly directly to civil airfields near the course, which are not always close to major commercial airports. It is therefore not surprising that many keen golfers choose to fly with NetJets Europe, including a number of professionals. NetJets Europe flies to over 5,000 airports worldwide and close to 1000 in Europe which means a huge variety of courses are readily accessible – NetJets’ clients can choose to soak up the sun on one of Dubai’s luxurious courses or brave the

Tiger Woods, himself a NetJets owner, has been reported as saying that private jets have become the only sensible form of transport for top golfers due to the attention they attract. Flying with NetJets Europe allows you to travel on your own schedule, rather than on an airline’s inflexible timetable. With availability guaranteed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, you can take advantage of a sudden opening in your schedule or spell of good weather to enjoy a spontaneous weekend on the fairway. In our fast-paced society, time has become a valuable commodity as we try to fulfil both our commitments and passions. Counting many of Europe’s prominent business leaders as its clients, NetJets Europe is more aware than most of this, which is why they regard the NetJets’ Private Jet Card as more of a productivity tool than a luxury. The NetJets Europe experience begins with the customer: how the customer conducts his/her affairs, how they like to travel, what language they are comfortable speaking. NetJets Europe ensures that it understands as much about the customer’s requirements as possible so that when they get to the

For those golfers who like to watch and learn from the pros, flying privately can also be a great way of cutting the queue when it comes to watching the big tournaments. Unlike flying on a chartered commercial flight, there’s effectively no limit to the number of flights or seats available so you won’t ever have to worry about flights being booked out; with NetJets you can make the decision to fly eight hours before tee off. Tiger Woods, himself a NetJets owner, has been reported as saying that private jets have become the only sensible form of transport for top golfers due to the attention they attract. Professional golfers know how important the pre-match environment is to their performance. is often the only way they can get home the same day to see their family. NetJets Europe has a long standing relationship with the world of golf. Besides a number of top golfers, many of its clientele enjoy a regular game. And it’s not just pleasure, many a business deal has been discussed over the golf course and golfing weekends are enduringly popular among corporate clients. The event, held at La Moye Golf Club, St Brelade, saw amateur golfers fly from Bulgaria, Dublin and London to test their skills against one of Europe’s biggest stars. The Clinic was just one of a series of client events to which NetJets Europe’s owners have been invited and a session with Swedish star Annika Sorenstam also proved a big hit.

NetJets Europe is transforming air travel the same way as Tiger Woods has transformed golf. Its pioneering fractional approach allows individuals and companies the opportunity to buy as much, or as little, of an aircraft as they like without the responsibility of its upkeep. With NetJets Europe you can buy your own share of private jet for 1/16th of the price, which entitles you to 50 hours of flying time per year. The Private Jet Card and Corporate Jet Card involve even less commitment, allowing customers to buy a block of 25 hours occupied flight time with one simple payment. Prices start at €131,000 and include the cost of carbon-offsetting which was made mandatory for all new customers in 2007. As Europe’s largest private jet company, NetJets Europe believes it should display the same leadership with regards to the environment. As a result, the company is on target to become completely carbon neutral by 2012. 62

Tom Watson

Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus - The duel in the sun at Turnberry 1977

With the Open Championship being staged this year at Turnberry for the first time since 1994, Paul Mahoney caught up with Tom Watson for his thoughts on Turnberry 1977, the British Open and his love-hate relationship with links golf. What does the British Open, Turnberry, 1977 mean to you?

How well do you remember that final round?

It always brings back warm memories. The Open Championship was at stake against the best player in the world (Jack Nicklaus). It was quite a weekend, wasn’t it? With all those birdies we made. For the last 15 or 16 holes it was just a twoman race.

He jumped ahead by three shots. I evened the match. He jumped ahead by two and I evened the match again at 15. That putt from off the green at 15 turned the tide my way.

Did it feel like playing matchplay for a major?

Ah yes. I turned to Jack and said, “This is what it’s all about, isn’t it?” And Jack turned to me and said, “You bet it is”. Then the last three holes were for the championship and I had to make that short putt on 18 to win. You just knew Jack was going to hole his putt. He’s Jack. He did that sort of thing all the time. The crowd were still going crazy when I was standing over my putt.

No, because you can’t afford to make the mistakes you can make in matchplay when you play strokeplay. It was medal play against Jack. And I did all right, didn’t I (smiles)? Did it dawn on you that you were playing a leading role in one of the greatest sporting battles ever?

Then you had that now famous chat on the 16th tee.

Victory was a defining moment for you dethroning Jack. I didn’t think about how special this championship would become in sport. I was trying so hard to make the combination of shots I needed to get me to the 18th hole where I had that 7-iron from 178 yards. It was only after the contest, when you talk to the writers, that it began to sink in what we had achieved.

In 1977, I was certain I could play with the best players in the world. Until that year, I was striving to get there. Looking back to 1977, it was the year that I deemed I had the ability to win the important tournaments to be considered a great player.

67

So was making history important for you? I wanted to be the best player in the word and make history. I remember saying that in 1974 after I won my first tournament. I was taking aside by my dad and he said, “You really shouldn’t say that publicly”. And I thought, “Well, why not? That’s what I’m thinking about trying to do. There’s nothing wrong with saying that”. You won five Opens but it wasn’t love at first sight for you and links golf, was it? No, my first experience of links golf was at Monifieth in Scotland. I almost lost my ball off the 1st tee (laughs). I drove down the middle of the fairway and I couldn’t find it. My playing partners carried on while I took one last guess and there it was buried in a tiny pot bunker. I had to take a really awkward stance to get at it. And I didn’t really like that having hit what I thought was a perfect drive.

Playing with Jack and Luke Donald at the 2005 Open Championship

play the ball along the ground and not get upset when the bounces didn’t turn out the way I wanted. I think it goes back to my childhood when I had to play the ball along the ground because I couldn’t get it up in the air and I couldn’t hit it far enough so I had to bounce the ball onto the greens. You must be really looking forward to getting back to Turnberry?

With Ben Curtis,Seve Ballesteros,Greg Norman, Ian Baker Finch and Jack Nicklaus before the Champions Dinner

Do Americans struggle with the unique challenge of links golf? American golf is so predictable it sometimes becomes boring. You know, everybody plays the same shot the same way. Whereas links golf is so unpredictable. And that’s its beauty. When did you eventually fall in love with links golf? Even though I won the (British) Open in 1975 and 1977, I still didn’t like the way the game had to be played because I was so conditioned to play the ball high in the air playing American golf and not on the ground. Links was the antithesis of how I played. I started to realise I had a love for links golf in 1979 when I made the decision to stop fighting it and

It’s one of the most beautiful spots to play links golf with Ailsa Craig out there in the ocean and the white hotel on top of the hill with the little par three beneath, and the way the course hangs on the edge of the cliffs by the lighthouse. It’s one of my favourite places in golf.

TURNS PROFESSIONAL FOLLOWING FIRST APPEARANCE AT MASTERS

Danny Lee

Teenage golf sensation from New Zealand signs with IMG for management and marketing representation. Fresh off his first appearance at the Masters recently, Danny Lee announced that he has turned professional and signed with IMG, the world’s leading sports, entertainment and media company, for worldwide management and marketing representation. “I’m very proud of what I accomplished as an amateur, but felt like the time was right to challenge myself at a higher level as a professional,” said Lee. “I have already gotten a good sense of how much I can learn and grow from competing against the pros, especially being around so many great players at the Masters. I think the same is also true in working with IMG; they will help me be the best player I can be on the course and off.” The 18-year old Lee, who was born in South Korea, but moved to New Zealand at the age of eight, enjoyed a prolific amateur career becoming the youngest winner of the U.S. Amateur last August at the age of 18 years and one month, besting the previous record set by Tiger Woods in 1994, and earning him the number one spot in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. 72

Earlier this year, Lee won the Johnnie Walker Classic as an amateur beating a field that included PGA TOUR stars Anthony Kim and Camilo Villegas, to become the youngest ever winner on the European Tour. “The entire world of golf is excited about Danny Lee joining the professional ranks and IMG certainly shares that enthusiasm,” said Clarke Jones, Senior Vice President and Global Director, Golf Clients for IMG. “His performance at this year’s Johnnie Walker Classic on the European Tour clearly proves Danny has the talent to make an immediate impact in the world of professional golf. IMG is honored to be working with Danny and his family to help him achieve his goals.” Following his professional debut at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Lee’s immediate schedule will also include a start at the Quail Hollow Championship (April 30-May), marking Lee’s first return to North Carolina since winning the U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst last August. He will also play on the PGA TOUR at the HP Byron Nelson Championship (May 21-24), the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial (May 28-31), the Memorial Tournament presented by Morgan Stanley (June 4-7) and the AT&T National (July 2-5).

The Emirates A380 a premium hotel in the sky

Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline, brought its very own brand of double decker to London recently with the arrival of its industry leading A380. The Emirates A380 will operate on flights EK001 and EK002 between Heathrow and Dubai. The A380 deployed on its Heathrow - Dubai route is the third of 58 that the carrier ordered, making it by far the largest customer for the super-efficient superjumbo. Despite its colossal size, the Emirates A380 makes less than half the noise of a jumbo jet and uses 20 per cent less fuel. Emirates President Tim Clark said: “We are delighted to bring our customers state-of-the-art comforts which are unmatched anywhere else in the world. “Despite today’s challenging economic environment, they have responded by being very popular from day one. “Our major onboard innovations, the Onboard Shower Spas and Onboard Lounge, have already proved a big hit with customers. Around 75 per cent of our First Class passengers are using the showers in-flight, while the Onboard Lounge has proved a popular gathering spot for passengers who are able to tear themselves away from our revolutionary in-flight entertainment system.” “Due to its environmentally-friendly performance, the Emirates A380s will make a huge contribution to efforts to reduce overall emissions.”

75

76

Spread over two levels, the whole of the upper deck is dedicated to Premium Class passengers. Towards the front, First Class passengers can relax in one of 14 flat-bed, massageequipped Private Suites. These incorporate remote-controlled doors, a work desk, an electrically controlled mini-bar and the most advanced in-flight entertainment system ice, which is available to all onboard. The aircraft boasts two Onboard Shower Spas – in First Class cabins, which include heated flooring, leather seating and shower kits from Emirates’ premium spa brand, Timeless Spa.

Business Class passengers can enjoy a new generation of intelligent seating, designed to ensure all seats have aisle access. There’s a cleverly designed table that never gets in the way, and a seat that slickly becomes a fully-flat bed. First and Business Class passengers can also take advantage of the Onboard Lounge, located at the rear of the upper deck. The lounge is designed to make passengers feel like they are in their own executive club, and offers seating, and a bar with a wide range of beverages and canapés. Another First Class social area with drinks facilities is located at the front of the upper deck.

Despite its colossal size, the Emirates A380 makes less than half the noise of a jumbo jet and uses 20 per cent less fuel.

77

Passengers in Economy Class will notice the straight, rather than conventionally concave walls, throughout the cabin, giving the impression of increased spaciousness, enhanced by the more generous seats and wider aisles. The first two A380s delivered to Emirates were introduced on services between Dubai and New York in August and October 2008. An Emirates A380 also served Sydney and Auckland from February 2009.

The European Tour’s registered charity has been rebranded and renamed as the Tour Players Foundation, it was announced on the eve of the BMW PGA Championship at the Wentworth Club. The charity, which originally launched in 2006 as GolfAID, was founded to make benevolent grants to other organisations and charities, particularly those assisting children and young people. The launch of the rebranding is being commemorated with a cheque presentation of £35,000 by the Tour Players Foundation to Children With Special Needs (CWSN), a local charity to the European Tour’s HQ that provides support to a children with a disability or a very special talent that would not be fulfilled without help. The founder of CWSN, Gordon Parris MBE, accepted the cheque from European Tour Member and World Number Four, Henrik Stenson and Chairman of the Tour Players Foundation, Mark Roe. By putting these fundraising initiatives and schemes into practice, as well as assisting tournament sponsors, promoters, suppliers and any committed golf supporter with their charitable endeavours, partnerships and links throughout golf will be strengthened. In turn, the Tour Players Foundation will offer reciprocal support to the Membership with their existing charitable work and any of their on-going initiatives. Mark Roe, the Tour Players Foundation Chairman, explained the reason for the rebrand. “The Trustees felt that our new name would give us a stronger, more easily identifiable brand. This would be a good platform for promoting our work in golf

80

as well as across the worlds of sport, business and charity. The Tour Players Foundation endeavours to support charities that are local to the areas that host tour events. This is a very fair and tangible way of players giving something back to relevant good causes.” He said: “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be involved with the Tour and the Membership for the last 12 years,” he said. “I believe that the insight and proximity I have to the Membership puts me in a great position to help them make a difference. “The strap line of the Tour Players Foundation is ‘Golfers Giving Back’ and I hope every golfer with a connection to the Tour, professional or amateur alike, will take the time and opportunity to lend a hand in any way they can and together we can make a substantial impact for worthy causes through golf.” George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour, added: “This is an exciting time for the Tour Players Foundation; Tour Members have always been generous in supporting charitable initiatives and this new structure and branding will greatly assist in raising funds and awareness. When we see the way the charity helps such deserving causes like the one today, it is a source of inspiration for us all.’
