While earning a degree in Enviornmental Design, I developed an interest in Architecture that is both innovative and sustainable. With a harsh climate and dynamic terrain, Colorado was an ideal location to study this type of design. I am eager to learn more about all aspects of the Architectural profession. I hope to find a position which will allow me the opportunity to expand my knowledge and refine my skills. I am especially interested in working in adaptive reuse, as well as strategic design that is thoughtful of a location’s surroundings. I have also found inspiration in the cross section of Architecture and photography. The process of reframing a space within a photograph adds a compelling new dimension to design.

Design Process Located deep within the Rocky Mountains, the [Re] Invention of the Christie Lodge offers a unique opportunity to evaluate the potential for the building to act as much more than a hotel, with a demand for a unique array of public, private, and semi-private programmatic conditions. Through a synthesis response to the programmatic conditions. Through a synthesis of response to the programmatic, enviornmental, and social conditions at hand, this [Re] Invention of the Christie Lodge is intended to act as an extension of both time and place within Avon, Colorado. Surrounding Views Avon offers dramatic views of the Rocky Mountains in nearly every direction. Four unique seasons means year-round, world class views. Our mission was to engage these views while being mindful of the adjacent properties.

Climatic and Geological Conditions All guestrooms in this plan are south facing in order to allow natural light to flood in. Our south facing facade features an operable screen system allowing guests to control how much sunlight enters their space. The sourrounding grounds have been pushed and pulled in order to create ground to roof sequences and indoor/outdoor experiences. The building is tucked into this landscape in a seamless manner.

Guestroom Plans The furniture in our guestrooms act as operable features in order to allow different user groups to adapt the space according to their needs. Stow away beds, foldable dinner tables, and sliding glass panels allow the living room to transform into a second bedroom.

Our bedrooms are composed of a combination of concrete and beetle kill wood. The soft white lighting and the darker material choices create a calm and comfortable ambiance.

The bathrooms feature the same conrete and reclaimed wood materiality as the bedrooms. They are complimented by stainless steel hardware and white porcelain amenities.

The Christie Lodge is located just off I:70 in Avon, Colorado. It lies within walking distance of the town center, offering a plethora of retail ammenaties, and just a short trip from Beaver Creek and Vail Resorts. A high speed rail line is proposed to run between the site and the interstate, in turn reinforcing the Christie Lodge as the gateway to Avon. The north face of the building is composed of both transparent and frosted glass. The light within the building glows outward to invite travelers on the highway to stop by. The south face of the building has three sections pulled outward at an angle in order to frame views of the surrounding moutains and ski resorts.

16

Materiality The interior surfaces are composed of a two tone palette. High quality concrete and reclaimed beetle kill wood complement one another to create a calm atmosphere. The beetle kill wood is locally sourced and treated. The rooms also feature frosted glass which creates ambient lights and increased privacy. The graphic to the left shows a cavity wall with wooden coverings, allowing space to store suitcases and ski gear. Interior Render: Guestroom

The nature of the site lends itself to a linear geometry. Our mission was to create a design that is unobstructive to both the existing circulation flow as well as a mature grove of trees. The site’s location within the campus adds an opportunity to become the center of the art/design district.

The library is located on the west end of the building and stretches vertically from floor 2 to floor 4. This was done in order to provide all studios with same level access. The library provides a combination of resources and work space. Flex gallery spaces are located throughout the building to provide a space to shocase the work of the students. These gallery spaces can be adapted to hold larger groups and events.

Contoured wooden slats are used on the walls and ceilings to create a seamless integration between the building’s variety of spaces. The grand staircase located just inside the main entrance acts as both a main vertical circulation route and a gathering space for students who need a rest.

The studio spaces feature a variety of equipment and machines including laser cutters, CNC machines, and plotting stations. Lower year studios are located on the top floor to increase exposure to other students and work spread throughout the building.

Mapleton Coffee House is a surface redesign of a cafe space within an The existing structure in downtown Boulder. The vision for the cafe was to use

digital fabrication methods to create an installation that is both functional and elegant. The result is a combination of addition, removal, and contouring. A series of vertically stacked wooden boards make up a flowing, singular form.

32

33

Digital Fabrication The Mapleton Cafe was designed using digital fabrication methods. The design was convieved and then built in Rhinoceros. The wooden boards in the installation would be cut with a CNC machine and connected to brackets using a lap joint. The result is a dynamic and functional wall and bench system.

The lap joint allows plywood sheets to be stacked withmspacing. The joint is made by cutting matching notches into each plywood board, and fitting them together. The proper tolerence will make the two boards lock together. 35
