On the site of an abandoned restaurant this design offers a fresh new space which would beautify the neighborhood and attract professionals from the area looking for a modern accommodation. The complex features eight apartments, two of which are handicap accessible. All units contain spacious open floor plans with plenty of natural light and outdoor terraces.

Light Monitor and Loft

Loft

The interior of each apartment is lit by a large north-facing light monitor which fills the double height spaces with ambient natural light. The six main units feature a loft which functions as a sleeping space and looks down into the main living spaces. The accessible units feature an extra light monitor in the sleeping space so that all spaces may be naturally lit.

Non-Denominational Chapel Location: Alfred University Model: Strathmore (matboard) Images: Sketchup and Photoshop Spring 2014

A non-denominational chapel located on Alfred University’s campus. The chapel includes spaces for worship, performances, and meditation. Situated near a central pedestrian intersection on campus, the chapel invites students to wander inside and take a moment for quiet self-reflection.

Punched windows on the North and South walls produce curtains of light that illuminate the sanctuary and foyer. This method of daylighting eliminates dominant views out of the chapel and focuses the user’s attention inward, enhancing the meditative qualities of the space.

Downtown Hornell Redesign Location: Hornell, NY Images: Sketchup and Photoshop Fall 2016

This project was the result of a strong need to revitalize downtown Hornell, NY and also add a bike lane which was proposed by the city but had not been planned. The design addresses parking, traffic lanes, sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, and greenspaces. These elements are organized in a way that creates a harmonious and park-like aesthetic making Main Street a more welcoming and pedestrian-friendly environment.

Plan of Main Street

The location of street parking was carefully handled to provide a safer bike lane, a midstreet crossing point, and a park space featuring vegetation and seating for pedestrians. With this design, bikes lanes are located adjacent to the sidewalk and are therefore clear of car doors. “Mid-walks were created allowing drivers to exit their cars and walk safely to the brick cross-walks. The bike lanes and mid-walks are also protected by bollards.

Commons Design Location: Alfred State College Images: Sketchup and Photoshop Model: Chipboard Fall 2014

The Commons at Alfred State College are located between four academic buildings along the central spine of the school’s main campus. The goal of the design was to integrate the space with adjacent structures and create a destination point on campus. This goal was met by improving circulation, maximizing views, creating spaces that generate activity, and using a consistent geometric language throughout the design.

17

18

The heart of the design consists of ten octagonal modules which combine to form a large, semi-amorphous structure. The structure acts as a buffer from the elements and generates communal activity by drawing students up, under, and through its rustic and forestlike space.

Tactile Urbanism Location: Sorrento, Italy. Images: Sketchup and Photoshop Spring 2016

A 10’ x 10’ x 10’ cube is placed in a public square, clad with mirrors, perforated, and eroded to create a sculptural object encouraging social interaction. During the day the cube blends in with its environment, reflecting its surroundings. At night, the cube’s internal solar powered LED lighting system glows from beneath its perforated skin creating a dazzling visual display and illuminating the surrounding space.

St. Anna Institute Adaptive Re-use Location: Sorrento, Italy Images: Sketchup and Photoshop Spring 2016

Originally a private Catholic school, the building is now being used as an international language college. Our task was to adapt the building to its new program. This design opens the building up spatially and visually by creating a series of vernacular arches in the original walls. The stair was re-designed with a light open-air system which improves transparency giving the school a fresh modern touch while preserving its historic presence.

Cliff House Location: Sorrento, Italy Images: Sketchup and Photoshop Spring 2015

The task for this design was to create a small cliff dwelling on the edge of an olive grove in Sorrento, Italy. This view shows the long undulating approach to the heavy fortress-like entrance. The home is designed in a radial array and offers views accross the Bay of Naples to Mt. Vesuvius beyond.

Urban Sketches Ink in Moleskine sketchbook 2016 26

Urban sketching is a way to improve my drawing skills, explore my surroundings, and study architectural form. It is also a form of meditation and one of my favorite hobbies. These sketches are from a recent trip to Copenhagen, Denmark. 27
