Al Shaqab Hotel & Spa DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Moving away from the heart, stand the hotel main building blocks which are inspired from the typical Qatari architecture having an indoor central courtyard. The landscape around the hotel main buildings is called the clearing, it’s a desert type landscape which is typical to the Qatari desert portrayed by a gravel meadow with umbrella shape scarse clump of trees. The pool area is part of the clearing. The pool area is divided into three main sub-areas: an adult pool area, akid’s pool area and a food garden. Both the hotel and oasis are bounded by the promenade which represents the legacy of the project, an equestrian infrastructure that allows navigation of the site by horse and rider, the Promenade is a purpose built route shaded by semi mature trees that will allow pedestrians and riders to enjoy the hotel grounds. The main entrance to the hotel lobby and reception is through the promenade and “porte cochere”.

DEBBAS SQUARE PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND CONCEPT DESIGN Debbas square is an existing urban square in Beirut Central District, Lebanon. The project aim is to redesign the square and connect it to its surrounding neighborhoods. Due to its strategic location in down town Beirut, the square used to be “an address, this characteristic was to be echoed or recreated by the design to allow proper animation and social interaction. Moreover, the square is at the bend of Damascus road, a major busy road connecting West Beirut to East Beirut. This location makes the square a strong visual feature when entering the downtown Beirut from the south and was highly considered for the design. The other side of the square is connected to lower intensity internal residential roads. The design proposes a square that is in visual harmony with the surrounding buildings, emphasizing the role of the square as an open space, therefore not exploiting the whole area, but complementing the different layers surrounding it (relegious, traditional, and building aligments). The aspects of intenration, merge and melting the surrounding into the square were all adapted, making it a one level platform accessible from north and south side. A canopy of evergreen trees was proposed on one side of the square solving the problem of scale to neighnoring buildings. From the other side, the square proposes a serigraphy glass wall that plays a dual role: a visual interactive barrier displaying contemporary art of Lebanese photographers and at the same time a sound barrier reducing the noise of high intensity road. The program suggests adaptable socio-economic equipments such as a coffee shop and rest area, a natural product hut with weekly market activities for biological

page 42

DEBBAS SQUARE CONCEPT DETAILS In order to level the square, a visual slope was avoided and an introduction of an urban horizontal table was suggested. Sidewalks and stairs were melt into the square, creating new opening and directions. The design presents a water basin, shallow depth with high mirroring effect. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BEIRUT PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND CONCEPT DESIGN The national museum of Beirut was inaugurated in1942. The National Museum is considered to be one of the rich collection. In 1996, the National Heritage Foundation focused its efforts on this project of rehabilitating the National Museum. The landscape concept proposal completes the restoration process of the National Museum. The museum is located next to the Beirut hippodrome, at the not well maintained and protected. Moreover, noise and air pollution are generated from the direct surrounding and are affecting the well being of the garden. The site has been neglected for years and used as a storage space. Elements placed on site got damaged with time. The grading varies slightly along the site, however, at the service gate, the levels differ considerably. The program proposes an outdoor terrace an extension to the coffee shop on two different levels, a children’s corner as many schools visit the museum. The project also proposes a green wall that seperates the garden from its surrounding, the green wall has a major impact on the whole design as it resolves the problem of noise and air pollution and it characterizes a hormonious path where sculptures will be displayed along green wall.

page 48

page 49

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BEIRUT DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Design development for the project was carried out, executing detailed drawings for the proposed design, focusing on the hardscape (stairs, tiling, walls, water feature...). In addition an investigation on the proposed softscape was done, suggesting mainly plantations of colorful shrubs adaptable to the urban area and maintenance of the exisiting trees. For the green wall, another invistigation was carried out since not all can perform well on a green wall which also requires

A 110x110 meter grid was applied in order to interconnect the overall image of the Landscaping of the area and to facilitate the organization of the various activities. A linking path was also adapted to connect the main activities proposed.

THUWAL VILLAGE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT PARK AVENUE AND MOSQUE PLAZZA The park avenue constitutes a major passage as it extends along the whole project from the university (KAUST) until the tip of the site, passing by the mosque plazza. The scale of the avenue was inspired by european large avenues where large trees constitute main elements that border the passage, in that case rows of palm trees were planted following a diagonal spacing. In instances, a pergola was incoparated within the avenue to insure seating, shading and resting while traveling the park avenue. For the softscape, the choice of plants was based on what is adapted to the desert area, a series of plams were proposed, along with windbreaks trees and succulent groundcovers that would grow under the plams and start to extend along

PRIVATE RESIDENCE ABEDEYI PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND DESIGN The project is located in Abadeyi, Mount Lebanon. The residence is a traditional Lebanese country house. The idea was to highlight this identity that is starting to fade away and be replaced with modern contemporary gardens. Due to the morphology of the site which follows a more longitudinal aspect and variation in levels, the project suggests a long passage under a vine and across a planted stone wall, creating an exclusive experience. The passage connects the different proposed activities, main seating area, coffee and children area, fruit and vegetables garden as well as house entrance. Although, the grading varies moderately within the site, the passage was designed to move slightly, creating smooth ramps and stairs that can serve for children activities as per clients’ request ( roller blading, biking, running etc....) The passage leads to the main seating area with a ramp, directs to the entrance with few steps to melt into the planted garden with a walkway. Detailed drawings were carried out as well as planting, hardscape, lighting schedules and the project was executed in august 2010.

INTERCONTINENTAL LE VENDOME BEIRUT CONCEPT DESIGN The hotel is located at the Beirut Sea Front (touristic area), ideally the corniche, and a wide promenade on the Mediterranean Sea which makes its location of major importance. Since its foundation in 1964, Le Vendome Intercontinental has characterized the luxury hotel experience which has been visited by the Lebanese jetsetters as well as International celebrities from around the world making it a target place for rich and famous visitors The project proposes a redesign for the entrance of the hotel. Two main axes were applied in order to accentuate the entrance of the hotel. Based on these two axes, a grid was generated. This grid will serve as a key plan for the design. Three water features were introduced to keep the spirit of the Mediterranean Sea and to stress on the water experience which is missing at the entrance of the hotel at the ground level, although the hotel rooms have a panoramic view to the Medeteranean Sea. A small pedestrian promenade was implemented to enhance the connection with the corniche

REPTON SCHOOL CONCEPTUAL DESIGN The project is intended to be a conceptual landscape design for an english school in Dubain. Inpired by the idea of the role of a main spine being the vital to keep an organization straight. It is FORMAL, PRECISE, and holds the main building of the school. Therefore a complimentary landscape should be arrayed alongside this spine. Extended from the spine are the TRANSITION AREAS. These areas act as a sieve to create natural FLOWING entities. School: Discipline-Process of learning under instruction. The landscape is part of the school. It also gives instruction. It dictates the function of the space and guides the students. Transition of disciplined areas to “disordered Thus, Each landscaped area adopts to the character of its immediate surroundings. Applying the concept of diffusion of the formal into the unformal, that accompanies a student in his different stages until organization.
