EMBRACING HERITAGE

This project hypothetically renovated an existing building in Pullman, WA into a wine bar & bistro with offices on the second floor. The space needed to allow customers to both taste & purchase the wine with a VIP tasting room above that could be accessed by a grand stairway & doubled as a conference room. After completing schematic and design development, the final phase was to complete a set of construction documents. The design connects with the rustic heritage of wine making and emphasizes reclaimed materials. It promises to create a space welcome to all, with a mixture of vintage and sophisticated elements.

WINE BAR & BISTRO

Site & Inspiration The space in which this design was created is currently a WSU retail store. The idea was to combine Merry Cellars winery with the South Fork restaurant to create Merry Forks, Wine Bar & Bistro. It was inspired by the heritage of wine dating back to the hearth and the Greek god, Dionysus. It brought to mind the ideas of comfort and harmony, the earthy mixtures of soil, and the refined curves of wood grain and flame.

First Floor & Grand Stair The entrance vestibule leads into an open common space focused on a welcoming fireplace where the customer can choose to move to the left into the bistro or right into the wine bar and retail area. This space accommodates wine barrel tasting as well as an area for private dining parties. As part of the design a grand sweeping staircase was included to direct VIP guests to the second floor. It utilizes dark reclaimed walnut and 3form resin railings.

Second Floor & VIP Conference Room A glittering wine chandelier leads guests to the second floor which centers on a VIP Tasting & Conference room. The reception area awaits along with small seating areas for informal meetings. The employees can enter through a second stairway leading to an employee locker area and small kitchen. The space utilizes open workstations with two small conferences areas to the sides and gives the managers their own private offices. Wine cork art is featured throughout the building so VIP guests have it continuously in mind.

BENEFICIAL DAYLIGHT

This project was used to help us understand basic office lighting practices and calculations for a space. We were to use Revit to explore systems designs and create multiple visualizations including renderings and solar studies. I sought to create evenly illuminated spaces that maximized daylight and fit the needs of the occupants. I aimed for a space that enhanced focus and productivity using multiple forms of lighting and simple material selections. I utilized LED fixtures, daylight shelves and step switches to maximize efficiency.

OFFICE LIGHTING DESIGN

Daylighting Legend:

1.5H = Daylight Zone

H=10

Daylight Zone = 15 feet

In order to maximize daylight I had to calculate the daylight zone. I noticed there was abundant south light coming in through the tall windows. This light would create unwanted glare and to counteract that matte paints and low reflectivity surfaces needed to be used, as well as daylighting controls. I used daylighting shelves on the interior to bounce light onto the ceiling and horizontal mechanized blinds to create further control within the space.

Electric Light Zones Legend:

50fc

30fc

20fc

10fc

I determined the lighting zones according to IESNA. The office area was recommended to have 50fc, the conference room 30fc, hallways and sitting areas 10fc, bathrooms 20fc, and kitchen and utility areas 30fc. I accounted for the needs of each space, including dimming in the conference room to accommodate presentation media as well as step switching in the open office for varying daylight levels.

Solar Studies In order to best understand the daylighting in the space I conducted solar studies using Revit. During the fall equinox there was a large amount of sun coming in during the morning hours and the light shelves worked effectively to control the direct glare and reflect light onto the ceiling. During the spring equinox I also found that the solar controls worked to prevent glare from the sun during the midday hours and the light shelves kept it from affecting the desks.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH SPOKANE For this collaborative project with Mallory Fair and Jordan Christensen we needed to look at the branding of Spokane’s Riverfront Park and create a design utilizing existing park island buildings to accommodate a wedding for up to 150 people. The entire island would have a ceremony and reception area and the buildings needed a full catering kitchen and storage for furnishings and decor. Our design for Canada Island is inspired by the night sky. Like the moon, the ceremony area was the main focus and the gazebos and bride’s garden added hints of sparkle like stars. The trees throughout the island allowed beams of light to shimmer through their leaves during the day creating a literal sparkle and served as privacy barriers without blocking the view of the river. At night, strings of lights illuminated the island and reception. The natural concept built upon the branding incorporating the moon and the stars and working off of the color schemes of the new brand, the island used teal, gray and yellow colors with spots of red.

The rustic wedding idea coincides with the goal to maintain the park’s identity of the island’s natural state. The long arbor, inspired by the left image, creates a procession way to the ceremony site. It is covered to create intimacy and decorated with lights to add the twinkle of starlight. The park would be able to supply rustic barrels and tabletops that would fit with the feel of the island. Permanent benches are placed in the ceremony site representing a traditional park staple. The reception area is large enough to hold an array of tables and chairs, potentially provided by the park, in white.

Site Plan Hand Drawn by Jordan Christensen

Structure In the existing buildings we provided a catering kitchen, storage, bathrooms, and areas for the bride and groom to get ready for the day. The kitchen is designed to allow lots of space for food being brought in by caterers. There is a bar counter with a slide-up window to pass food over easily whether for an informal or formal reception. The center building has a great amount of space available for storing the numerous tables, chairs, and other items for the park to rent out to parties. In the third building there are the public restrooms for guests to use as well as areas for the bride and groom to get ready and bridal parties to store their belongings. To create privacy for events, gates will be located at the east and west ends of the island, as seen on the site plan.

Plant Specification and Branding With the help of a landscape architecture student we were able to select plantings that were both native species and matched with the branding colors. The grapevines are featured on the processional walkway to enhance the romantic and natural experience. The quaking aspens are known to be bright yellow in the fall and make a unique sound when the wind blows through them. They create privacy, a sound barrier and with narrow trunks kept the view to the river open as well as offering the soft lighting effects we sought to create. In the bride’s garden are Blanket Flowers, which incorporate bright red from the branding, and Camas, which offer a lavender color connecting to Spokane’s Lilac City reputation. Lilacs may flourish in Spokane, but because they are nonnative we decided to exclude them from our planting choices.

Public Space Revit Rendering & Photoshop

PENSARE PICCOLO, VIVERE GRANDE The “Think Small, Live Big project set in Florence, Italy needed to include individual spaces for four residents, whether they were professionals, students or retirees. There was to be two shared restrooms, a shared kitchen and common area. Like most Italian projects, the biggest problem was fitting so much into a relatively small space and making it feel larger than it was. By including large amounts of natural light and combining features in the bedrooms residents could feel comfortable in the spaces. The design utilizes aesthetics and local materials along with artwork to tie to the area.

FLORENCE RESIDENCES

Site & Exploration Located in the Santa Maria Novella Piazza in Florence the site features an angled wall that provided many challenges for laying out the space. Many variations were explored to create a barrier between the public and private space. It was important to the design to equalize the square footage of the private spaces while providing easy access to restrooms, which needed to be accessible by any guests visiting as well.

Final Layout By placing all the bedrooms on the north side of the building they were exposed to soft daylight and would stay cool during summer months. The private spaces are separated from the public space by the restrooms and laundry area that sit on a wood step. The existing wood beams helped to accomplish this divide as well. Natural light was brought into the kitchen and hallway through transom windows that look into a central courtyard. Communal spaces allow for numerous areas of interaction whether while cooking, eating or lounging in the space.

29

Material Selections Certain elements were chosen to tie to the Italian location. The coffered ceiling and terracotta flooring are popular design choices and are implemented within this sophisticated design. The kitchen utilizes carrera marble from the area giving a solid connection to the region while providing a clean and crisp appearance.

FREITAG LA FLAGSHIP

This project started by breaking down the Freitag brand using Callison’s method of a Retail Experience Platform, then explored a Deployable Retail Experience and concluded with the design of a flagship store in downtown Los Angeles. The products were to be merchandised in a 5,000 sf. space that used to be a parking garage. The main design problem was the brand has a small amount of product and the space is expansive, so we needed to come up with extra program that would support the merchandise and the brand. This design responds with the idea of a park café, a direction that focuses on creating a social connection around the brand. It highlights the Freitag brothers’ values by utilizing recycled or reclaimed materials throughout; creating a durable space that can host many activities; having high quality, simple designs; and making the space warm and light with offbeat elements.

Retail Experience Platform This focused on breaking down the brand and its components. Cognitive maps were used to help understand the problem and the brand, while a makeshift customer was created to understand the consumer. A visual position, as seen above, helped to identify the atmosphere and experience of the flagship. Formula for the Organizing Idea: The Brand, The Consumer, & The Product + The Experience Attributes = The Organizing Idea: “To create a social connection around the brand

This explored a pop-up store that generated buzz for the brand while touring the United States. It was a design generated in one week that tested ideas that could be brought into the main flagship store. This shipping container design could easily be transported via semitruck and allowed for passersby to experience the brand’s atmosphere. It hosted a bar that serviced food and beverages that could be taken to go and enjoyed on site. With each drink purchased they had the option to keep the cup as a memento of the brand and their experience.

This design features the Automat, which hosts both snacks and merchandise. This function recreates a similar retail idea as Freitag’s flagship in Zurich while referencing the art deco heritage of the building. It greets you with color and light on your approach to the store. Inside the furnishings are movable to allow for the reference area to be cleared in order to host recreational activities, such as yoga. On the left you can see the “kit of parts,” or the items that make up the space. The seating is reminiscent of park staples, while the custom retail display stands highlight the product and connects the consumer to its sustainable creation. The area rug in the lounge is similar to grass with its shaggy texture and color variation.

First Floor Plan & Transition Spaces It was important to create a connection with the outside. This is done through carving out a piece of the sidewalk for greenery to draw people into the store. They enter through swiveling panels that can be opened to allow air in and serve as a transition to the flagship space off the busy street. The warm and light atmosphere created by all LED fixtures is both energy efficient and comfortable to shop in. Hosting the lounge in this location allows it easy access to the cafĂŠ, while surrounding the area with merchandise. It feels comfortable with the dropped pallet ceiling, terrarium integration and abundant daylight through the exterior windows. The customers can be drawn upstairs with the use of light and greenery following the treads.

F-abric Collection & Compost Diagram Revit Rendering & Photoshop

Second Floor Plan & Automated Interactions There are opportunities in both the customization and fitting room areas for an automated connection to the product. As with the first floor the lighting is warm and comfortable with the LED color temperature at 3200K. In the F-abric clothing section, there is a diagram that tells the story of how the products can decompose 100% when put in the compost and create flourishing green life from it as seen on the far left. In the customization area the customers can pull swatches from the wall for color accuracy, then design their bag style on a touchscreen. Once they finish their 2D design, a 3D digital projection can be seen in front of them for a offbeat, personal experience. In the fitting rooms, the customer does not need to undress in order to try on the products. With the use of technology, the interactive mirror would display how the clothing fits on the customer with the option to change color and size. But with the use of an opaque metal curtain if the customer wishes to physically try something on they have that option.
