“if I can be ACP for Sarfarosh or a tapori in Rangeela I can be Rancho too..” -Aamir Khan

From the bulging 8 abs of Sanjay Singhania it took a lot of effort for Rancho aka Aamir Khan… Dedication is his second name… Jyothi Venkatesh catches up with super excited actor as he awaits the release of the most awaited film of the year – Three Idiots

A

amir Khan is quite excited about having played the role of Rancho in Three Idiots. “It was not tough to play the role because I really look like one. (Laughs). If you were to ask me in what way is it different from Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name, all that I would say is that Three Idiots is not a frame to frame remake of the book written . On the contrary, the script has been adapted from the book. Though it begins from the book, it takes its own different course as the script progresses”. Aamir confesses that when Raju Hirani came to him to offer the role Rancho in Three Idiots, he was scared and petrified to take it up. “I told both Raju and Vidhu Vinod Chopra that it was a dangerous decision on their part to D E C E M B E R ’ 0 9 T H E   P L O T 0 3

big picture have thought of me to play the young college boy in the film, because I was not at all sure whether I would be able to pull off as a college boy. Just two days before the shooting was slated to begin, I had even rang up Raju and told him that if only he wanted, he could change his decision and cast a younger actor in the role that he had ear- marked for me, but he did not listen to me and just stuck to his gun. Raju convinced me by telling me that in real life, I am so close to Rancho the character that I was slated to play in 3 Idiots and what Rancho is, people will listen to I could bring out the truth in the way the character had been conceived” One of the reason why I took up the role of Rancho was because Raju has immense trust in me. He said if I can be ACP for Sarfarosh or a tapori in Rangeela I can be Rancho too.. I had to work a lot physically, because the first and foremost condition laid down by Raju was that I should concentrate a lot on my looks to suit the role”. Aamir says that he is glad that he has surprised himself a lot by challenging against the norms as far as he was concerned as an actor in 3 Idiots, thanks to Raju Hirani. “In real life, I do not do mimicry so well but Raju asked me to ape Boman Irani for the song Zuby Zuby Pampara by studying Boman’s body language. To what extent I have succeeded in mimicking him, I will come to know only after 3 Idiots is released” Aamir is gung- ho about his co-star Kareena . “Kareena is a wonderful actress. I would unhesitatingly even go to the extent of saying that she is very good to look at. She is warm and friendly and spontaneous and fun to work with. Though I have earlier worked with Karisma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani, I think after working with her in 3 Idiots I am a li’l pallier with Kareena. In fact, though I was busy with the promotional activities of my own film 3 Idiots, I very keenly looked forward to watch Kurbaan because I want her and Saif to do well, both personally as well as professionally”. 0 4 T H E   P L O T D E C E M B E R ’ 0 9

“Aamir is a cinematic genius and a one man University as far as acting is concerned.” -Kareena Kapoor

If you loved her as bubbly Geet of Jab We Met and admired her for her outstanding performance in Chameli... She has acting in her genes… Jyothi Venkatesh brings to you Kareena Kapoor as she readies herself for her new release Three Idiots

A

fter a very serious role in Kurbaan as Avantika, she proved once again that she is not just another pretty face. This Kapoor Kudi has perfect balance and control over her career and personal life. After an acclaimed Avantika, Kareena is eagerly awaiting audience verdict as Piya. “I play the role of Piya, a headstrong girl, who trains to be a doctor. In fact, I’d go even to the extent of stating that Piya of 3 Idiots is more real than even Geet of Jab We Met and when you set out to watch Piya in 3 Idiots you will even forget that it is Kareena Kapoor that you are watching on the screen. The father-

big picture daughter relationship in 3 idiots is seen to be believed. Boman Irani plays my father”. Kareena admits that she has not read the book Five Point Some One written By Chetan Anand. “In any case, though Vidhu Vinod Chopra has officially bought the right to the book, Raju has written quite a different script for the film and 3 Idiots is not entirely based on the book but a take off from that in Raju Hirani style. Yes. The basic premise has of course been maintained but the characters, the situations and the end are quite different. In fact, there is just a five per cent similarity between the book and what you see on the screen”. According to Kareena, the campus and the classroom setting for 3 Idiots are the only things that remain true to the book and everything else is entirely different, because the film has a very original plot which is inspired from the book and not based on the book. Kareena adds, “What is interesting about 3 Idiots is that I am the only girl in the film though there are three boys- Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and R. Madhavan. I do not think that a film like 3 Idiots, in which Aamir Khan and Raju Hirani are together, is something which one can get to see every now and then.”. Kareena says that she met Aamir for the first time when she went with Karisma to the location shooting of Raja Hindustani. “What can I possibly say about an actor like Aamir? Aamir is a cinematic genius and a one man University as far as acting is concerned. I feel that every actor’s journey is incomplete without working with an actor of the caliber of Aamir Khan. Aamir Khan is the emperor of Bollywood and without any hesitation, I would even go to the extent of stating that 3 Idiots is a mile stone in my career as an actress”. Kareena feels that like Kurbaan, 3 Idiots also will definitely change the face of Indian Cinema to a large extent, because both Kurbaan and 3 Idiots have soul in them. “Unlike Kurbaan where the character of Avantika that I played had to relate to her pain in a subdued way, since it was very subtle, Piya of 3 idiots is dynamically different”, Kareena quips, as a matter of fact. I feel blessed and lucky that I have had good directors all through my career, whether it was Anand Balani

in Chameli or Imtiaz Ali in Jab We Met or Renzil D’Silva in Kurbaan or for that matter Raju Hirani in 3 Idiots. I am now quite excited to be working with Kajol in Karan Johar’s next film directed by Sidharth Malhotra, which is an official remake of Stepmom with Arjun Rampal” According to Kareena, the role which she is doing in Stepmom is the most difficult part she has ever done. “It is a multi layered character. It was scary to step into the shoes of an actress like Julia Roberts, The character that I play in the film has a beautiful journey. Kareena confesses that as an actress, she was kept on her toes when she was acting with Kajol, who also relies, like Saif, Aamir and her on spontaneity. “Yet another actress with whom I’d love to work is my sister Karisma. She is truly my inspiration. I would not be exaggerating if I were to tell you that it is Karisma who gives me a reality check”. Besides the remake of Stepmom, Kareena is also committed to do Shriram Raghavan’s film Agent Vinod. “What I like about the film which is being produced by Saif is the fact that it is not a typical Hindi film thriller. Though I play the role of a spy in the film; it has no action. Saif is a multi

faceted actor who can essay any role with ease whether it is that of a terrorist in Kurbaan or lover boy in Love Aaj Kal or for that matter a Bond in Agent Vinod. I should say that he has indeed come a long way from the time he was seen in films like Aashiq Aawara. His has been an amazing journey as an actor from Aashiq Aawara to Kurbaan. Both Saif and I respect each other’s work” According to Kareena, the five best films of her career are Refugee, Chameli, Omkara, Jab We Met and last but not the least Kurbaan. “I am happy with whatever growth that I have achieved over the years in the film industry from the time that I had made my debut as an actress with Refugee but I feel that I should keep on growing more and more. We actors are like scientists, who keep on working with different experiments. Some experiments work while some do not. Some times I do a film for the sake of emotion or relationship like I did Main Aur Mrs Khanna but I do not regret a decision of mine even if the film flops, like Main Aur Mrs Khanna did”. After having done films like Kurbaan and 3 Idiots, I want to rediscover myself and re-invent myself as an actress. We surely are waiting to see more of you!!! Fashion 2009

From reel to real! F

ashion Industry in India has found its best mirror in our Films. Today fashion is not dictated merely on ramps. It is more on screen. Film stars and television artists are looked upon for their style of dressing. They are constantly under the scrutiny of the lenses and audiences!!! Bollywood super stars have always looked up as Style gurus since the era of Jeetendra’s white attire or Amitabh Bacchan’s bell bottoms or Rishi Kapoor’s cardigans. This year too Bollywood has sent cash registers ringing for retailers… From the aqua thriller Blue to boy meets girl Love AajKal! These movies might have not sizzled the box office, but it has certainly have ruled the malls and boutiques then the number of fashion weeks put together. No wonder Bollywood actresses like Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor are seen dazzling up the runway at various fashion weeks. Lets have a dekko at some of the trends for men and women that been set this year by the Bollywood movies. For women this year, the Bollywood fashion trends have been all about tunics, Jumpsuits, Higher Hemlines, Long Dresses and Anarkali Kurtas. A rage of short dresses was pioneered by our very own PC aka Priyanka Chopra post Dostana. The similar version was made popular by Kareena Kapoor in Kambhakt Ishq. They has not only motivated the others to follow the same trend but is seen sporting the outfit at number of award shows, inaugurals and premières, etc. Many 10 THE PLOT DECEMBER ’09

stylists have adopted the look and mastered it to tee. So now we see Amrita Rao, Amisha Patel, Riya Sen wearing the clones of the short dress. However the reason for the popularity is attributed to the fact that the short dress not only gives you a clean, chic look but at the same time is quite trendy. The high hemlines are doing a lot of rounds with bold colors like Black, Red, Purple and Blue. Move over, western outfits! Traditional anarkali tunics teamed with leggings worn by our filmi Fashion Icon Deepika Padukone in Love Aajkal got the eyeballs of women all over. Not only was it casual and hassle free but it gave a fresh feel to the entire traditional costume. The flower embedded tunic teamed with a jhola and chappals is seen adapted in various versions by the college going crowd since the release of the movie. For a night at club, the leggings are being left at home and tunic gives a chic summer look even when worn by itself. Post the watching Asin in London Dreams and Jacqueline Fernandes in Aladin lot of women raided the nearest

shop for the long dress similar to the one worn by her in the movie. Though this trends will take some time to pick up full throttle.. I am sure the long skirts and kurtis will become the next vogue once woman sets their eyes on Kareena in Kurbaan. If you think fashion was a womans domain, think again. This year we have seen a flood of male accessories too… Be it Scarves, Hats, Ties or Socks, Bollywood’s blue-eyed boys have been seen sporting all of this with equal panache. Ranbir Kapoor will win the title of trend setters for college youth hands down. The Devil-may-Care look sported by Ranbir Kapoor in Wake Up Sid has been mastered by college students all over the country. Be it his tom and jerry t-shirts or snakes and ladder socks, College youth is seen hunting for it all over the shopping streets. Men these days are spotted with caps worn by Ranbir in Wake Up Sid. Men are also seen sporting vests over their shirts. The scarves have also been a huge hit with menthis year. The Keffiyah- Palestine Support Scarves worn by Akshay Kumar in Kambhakt Ishq and Blue has seen a trend following amongst the masses. Although bell bottoms are extinct since some fashion years back but Salman made it a hit by flaunting them in Wanted. This had people searching them all over flea markets and putting it back on the must have list. A lot of fresh fashion wave will hit the nation as another one of youth based film – Three Idiots will release… The fashion gurus await a sea of change in the current trends.

Wanted Salman Khan, the eternal playboy of Bollywood who has romanced the best of beauties on and off screen just couldn’t strike enough chemistry with the Oh! so cute but not so little Ayesha Takia in Wanted. Might sound a little insensitive to my sensibilities! Salman took my breath away in Maine Pyar Kiya, but if honesty compels watching him in Wanted with Ayesha made me think that she would have been better suited in the role of his daughter if he ever accepted a script with the role of a father than his love interest. In the recent past the best chemistry that he had was with Sushmita Sen in Maine Pyar Kyu Kiya, maybe because they belong to the same generation of actors!

movie trivia What’s Your Rashee Woah…how could she have ever dated him in personal life was the first thought that struck me after seeing the movie. The on screen presence of Hurman was so overpowered by Priyanka that am sure their real life relationship was a case study for women liberation groups. I don’t know if the director’s vision was to show Yogesh Patel’s character as a complete loser and Hurman was doing justice to the character but one thing is for sure there was no chemistry even with 1 out of 12 Priyanka! I kept thinking if Hrithik or Saif could have done this role! The movie surely would have been fun to watch. Priyanka’s pairing with Shahid in Kaminey was surely sizzling as they stuttered together.

Dil Bole Hadippa Both Rani and Shahid are wonderful actors but somehow there chemistry was so muddled in Dil Bole Hadippa that it just didn’t look right. Arguably there was nothing specifically wrong with them worth trashing but seeing them together did not make me wish for my special someone! I can’t help comparing Rani’s chemistry with her costar - AB Jr in Yuva…boy they surely made everyone’s palms sweat. For Shahid I would only say that he looks cuter with younger heroines whose sweetness matches his rabbity smile.

Chandni Chowk to China The elder’s ask you to not tamper with what is good. Guess this year Akki should have listened to those voices. Not only was it his worst year ever with all his movies being a drag but his chemistry with all his new leading ladies made me forget how wonderful it was to watch him quote poetry to Katrina in Namaste London. After watching CC2C I felt that Akki and both the Deepika should have flown away with their magical chatri so the audiences would have been spared.

Life Partner There were 3 couples in the movie and none of them struck to me as the right life partners for each other. My first thoughts after managing to sit through the whole movie were why did the director do a laurel and hardy with Govinda and Amrita. Why did a fresh Genelia look like a nag hag next to a bit dazed Fardeen and why did a decent actress like Prachi not sit and hold out for a better movie after Rock On. This movie was a classic example of how the wrong choice of actors can make a halfway decent story seem bad.

What’s in Store

2009 saw a lot of hits and flops... The year came and went... 2010 is all set with great line up of films for Bollywood... A sneak peak into the coming year...

W

ith not so successful 2009, Bollywood is eagerly awaiting 2010 to create the magic and revive the industry. A lot is in store for audiences. 2010 seems to be promising year for Indian Film Industry. It is a common phrase in Bollywood that nothing is permanent and the film trade is hopeful that the disastrous 2009 will change with 2010. We look at some of the most promising films that the coming year holds for you and reassures the fact that 2010 will indeed bring back cheers to the film trade and the industry. While 2009, was marred by the multiplex strike, the corporate fiascos and film release dates altered resulting in major films like My Name Is Khan and Kites being pushed to 2010, making it one of the most disappointing years in the recent years. However 2010 starts off with a bang. The first month itself bring a variety of films that the film industry will look forward to. On one hand we have the eagerly

awaited Salman Khan’s Veer, we also have Ishkiyaan with Nasserudin Shah and Arshad Warsi. There is the delayed but awaited Dulha Mil Gaya, Uday Chopra’s comeback film Pyaar Impossible and Shahid Kapoor’s Chance Pe Dance. All films completely different from each other but equally promising at the same time. Viveik Oberoi action thriller Price also releases in January along with Rann, which promises to have Ram Gopal Varma in top form.” However the real battle will be in the month of February when Shah Rukh Khan clashes with Amitabh Bachchan as My Name Is Khan is slated to be released opposite Teen Patti. The month of April will see the release of Bollywood meets Hollywood blockbuster Kites which is already slated as one of the most anticipated film of 2010. Aamir Khan will have his thee home productions Dhobi Ghat, The Rising and Delhi Belly ready for release and going by his standards he won’t be leaving any stone unturned for the release of the

film. It can yet again turn out to be Akshay Kumar’s year with films like Khatta Meetha, House Full and Action Replay with Aishwarya Rai slated to release and Patiala House, Hera Pheri 4 and the recently announced Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan also scheduled to go the floors. Imran and Ranbir will have their set of release with I Hate Luv Stories and Delhi Belly and Ranbir Kapoor having Sajid Nadiadwala’s Anjaana Anjaani and Rajneeti slated for release next year. He will also start working on a film with Imtiaz Ali. Similarly Shahid Kapoor will have his set of releases with Chance Pe Dance, his father’s film Mausam and Parmeet Sethi’s next. His much delayed but his last film with Kareena Kapoor Milenge Milenge will also releases in 2010 and can well turn out to be a dark horse. Saif Ali Khan does not seem to have any release on the anvil and the only possibility it seems will be his home production Agent Vinod which is slated to go on the floors next year. Hrithik Roshan will have a couple of releases in the same year with Kites

and Guzarish and he might start work on the remake of Agneepath and Vishal’s next film. John Abraham will have Love 1800 releasing next year and it is also Abbas Tyrewala’s next release after Jaane Tu Ya Jane Na, Phillum City and Hook ya Crook. Abhishek Bachchan on the other hands has a couple of interesting films with Mani Ratnam’s most ambitious project till date in Raavan and Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Khelenge Hum Jee Jaan Se. Ajay Devgn also has couple of films in the form of Athiti Tum Kab Jayoge and Rajneeti. And then finally there is the very talented Neil Nitin Mukesh who also has couple of interesting release which also includes his film with Yash Raj Films with Deepika. On the other hand we also have many anticipated films from directors who need to prove a point. Be it Ram Gopal Varma with Rann and Rakta Charitra, Bhansali with Guzarish or Ashutosh Gowarikar with Khelenge Hum Jee Jaan Se, there will also be directors like Imtiaz Ali, Rajkumar Santoshi, Vishal Bharadwaj, Sanjay

Gupta, Rakyesh Mehra, Subhash Ghai and Yash Chopra who are slated to announce their next films. There are also makers like Anees Bazmee who have enjoyed an 100% trace record in the recent past who have films lined up in the form of No Problem and Harman Baweja’s Its My Life. On the other hand, Farhan Akhtar who will also have a couple of releases with Karthik Calling Karthik will also start work on his directorial venture Don 2. His sibling Zoya has managed to rope in interesting cast in the form of Hrithik Roshan, Abhay and Farhan himself and the film is slated to go on the floors by next year end. It has been proved time and again that the biggest reason for the failure of film is its weak script and hopefully the corporate will realize that pumping in huge money on weak scripts only result in failures. The biggest examples this year have been Delhi 6, Blue, Luck, Short Kut and 8 X 10 Tasveer, all made by corporate houses. Let’s hope the next year makes these necessary changes and things get streamlined.

East West meets

S

o it wasn’t that big a deal seeing Kylie Minogue dance to the very desi Chiggy Wiggy. And a not-getting-any-younger Denise Richards straight out a pool failed to create any heat. But that’s not all that is to the Bollywood-Hollywood romance. While more and more Indian actors go the Hollywood way and vice versa, multi-million dollar deals have been struck to make movies jointly. Yes, it’s not just an odd dance number or a blink and you miss role that is enticing these actors to enter new territories. The world of cinema is truly experiencing globalization. “The audiences have changed and so has the movie-making business. Everybody wants to make movies for a global audience today,” director Anurag Basu has been quoted as saying. His highly anticipated, soon-to-be-released Kites, has Mexican model Barbara Mori playing Hrithik Roshan’s rather sizzling love interest.

Starry exchange

Let’s take a look at some movies that boast of an exciting exchange of Bollywood and Hollywood stars. Teen Patti, the film that brings together two of the world’s biggest superstars - Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley has created a lot of buzz and has been touted as one of the most fascinating films to emerge from Asia. An emotionally riveting and razor sharp thriller about greed, deception and giant feats of the imagination, the film is set both in India and England. While Amitabh Bachchan plays Venkat Subramaniam, a reclusive Math genius from India who cracks a theory that could redefine the principles of probability and randomness, Sir Ben Kingsley plays the part of Perci Trachtenberg, known as the world’s greatest living mathematician. “Serendipity Films combines the collaborative genius forces from India and abroad to make films that engage not only the international imagination but also the deep core of our shared humanity. Our vision is to make films that appeal not only to an Indian audience but also to the global audiences,” producer Ambika Hinduja has been quoted as saying. 24 THE PLOT DECEMBER ’09

The immensely talented Anupam Kher, celebrating 25 years in films, has recently worked in a Woody Allen film. Another cameo? “You think I care? All I know is that I play Freda Pinto’s father in the Woody Allen film. Even if it is just one shot I’d be delirious. I’ve grown up and grown older watching Woody Allen’s cinema. And look at my kismet. Do you know the film’s cast? The Woody Allen film features the mighty Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts and Antonio Banderas. To be part of this vast cast is enough for me,” he’s been quoted as saying. “Last year, I worked with another international filmmaking legend Ang Lee. Now Woody Allen. What more could any actor ask for in his 25th year in the business?” he asks.

global screen Then there is Irrfan Khan, a familiar face in the world of international cinema who has been honored by the British House of Commons for his outstanding contribution to the Indian cinema. After receiving recognition for his roles in The Warrior, The Namesake, A Might Heart, he has been roped in for the movie adaptation of Life of Pi, directed by Ang Lee, maker of critically acclaimed films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

It’s not just the A-listers that are making it big in the West. The versatile Divya Dutta, after starring in Jennifer Lynch’s Hisss, which has Mallika Sherawat playing the role of a snake woman, has already won much accolade for her role in Heartland, the multi-lingual film by one of Hollywood’s finest directors, Fred Holmes. The web world is ripe with reports of Fred Holmes complementing Divya by saying that she’s by far the finest actress he’s worked with. Divya has apparently choreographed an entire dance sequence for the film. According to insiders, the sequence required Divya’s character to dance dreamily. Having seen Divya’s previous works, Fred was sure that Divya would be able to bring out the true essence of the character’s persona. “When the director came and asked me whether I would be interested in choreographing the sequence, I was more than thrilled to do it!” she’s been quoted as saying. Yesteryear villain Prem Chopra also stars in the film.

The business of movies According to a Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry(FICCI)-KPMG media and entertainment industry report, 2009, the Indian film industry, with releases around 1000 movies a year, produces twice the number of Hollywood movies. For Hollywood, India is an important growth market: Indian box-office revenues are likely to double to $4 billion by 2012, according to a 2008 entertainment industry report by FICCI and PricewaterhouseCoopers. That compares to a $9 billion market in the U.S., according to Walt Disney India. No doubt the West is mesmerized with Indian films, stars and industry. Over the last two years, major studios from Sony Pictures and Disney to Warner Brothers and Paramount have been wooing the movie-mad Indian audience by teaming up with local directors and production

houses, filming locally, and acquiring finished movies. Bollywood is equally keen to go global and reach out to a global audience and the affluent Indian diaspora. Yes, many Hollywood studios have not been able to hit the bull’s eye. Sony’s love story Saawariya, Disney’s Roadside Romeo, co-produced with Bollywood’s Yash Raj Films, and Warner Brothers’s Chandni Chowk to China are a few examples. But a big reason for the proliferation by the West is our economy’s resilience in times of recession. According to reports, in 2007, UTV and Fox co-produced Indian-American director Mira Nair’s The Namesake. UTV was also co-producer of Indianborn director M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, which opened last year and has pulled in more than $160 million globally. Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment is co-producing an animation and live-action Hollywood movie with UTV for Western audiences. Disney owns 57 percent of UTV, having spent an undisclosed sum to buy the stake over the last two years. For now, we’re waiting to see Julia Roberts jive to desi tunes.

Anil Kapoor and Neha Dhupia might not have bagged big banner, muti million movie deals, but they have some rather impressive TV deals in their kitties. While Kapoor has been snapped up to play a role in the hit American television serial 24, Dhupia was mighty excited about Bollywood Hero. For the uninitiated, 24 is an American espionage crime thriller featuring Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) as a cop who fights domestic and terrorist activities. It is one of the most successful thriller shows in history. According to reports, Bollywood Hero proved lucky for Neha Dhupia. The famous Jessica Simpson, who has her own show called Price of Beauty, was quite taken by Dhupia, who has now been chosen as the Bollywood Beauty Ambassador of the show. Price of Beauty deals with the different ways in which beauty is perceived around the world.

Year that was!

Television 2009 annual round up!

S

mall screen has not remained so small after all. It has attracted a lot of Bollywood biggies and they have made some big moolah here… Year 2009 has been a roller-coaster ride for television audiences as it had varieties of shows on its platter to be offered. Right from controversial reality shows, drastic change in soap themes to clutter of comedy shows have been launched on the different channels. Unlike earlier, TV viewers were not compelled to watch same Saas-Bahu fiction and singingdancing reality series. Saas- Bahu finally retired from their jobs of scheming against each other and in their quest of pining-down each other and they were replaced by socially relevant issues. Such shows were breather for the viewers than watching numerous shows based on same theme. With megahit serials like ‘Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ and ‘Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki’ going off-air, yet another phase of Indian Television got over that made way for fresh lot of serials. Fictions based shows on various social issues like Colors ‘Balika Vadhu’, Zee TV’s ‘Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo’, Colors ‘Bairi Piya’ and Sony’s Bayttaab ‘Dil Ke Tammana Hai’ was very well received by the audiences and is running on the prime time slot.. Finally the youth had some thing to look forward to on small screen as they got their share of romance and fun. Apart from MTV Roadies and other reality shows, they enjoyed cheerful shows like Star One’s ‘Miley Jab Hum Tum’, ‘Love Ne Mila Di Jodi’ and Sony’s version of La Lola - ‘Bhaskar Bharti’ also was well

recieved. Kids also had their share of fun, with child-stars like Ulka Gupta in ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’ and Zaynah Vastani in ‘Aap Ki Antara’ which attracts their attention on TV. Family comedies still rocked the scene with shows such as ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma’ and ‘Comedy Circus’s new season’ which kept the laughter dose of families intact. Shows like Pavitra Rishta, 12/24 Karol Bagh and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai became favoirite amongst audiences as they saw relatable characters on this shows unlike heavily decked up womans of Oh! So very rich families! Reality television got more real as they brought different concept shows. Audiences were glued on to the Moment of Truth’s Indian Edition – Sach Ka Saamna which was hosted by TV’s heartthrob Rajeev Khandelwal. The show was so controversial that it raised doubts about integrity of Indian culture amongst the government bodies. Inspite of all the critisicm and controversies the show garnered huge TRPs. Another era in reality television was wedding! The sacred institution was also the talk of the town as our very own Rakhi Sawant got prepared to choose her groom on National Television and when it is Rakhi there has to be lot of spice and fights. Post her groom she was immiedietly thrown in a house with her fiancée Elesh in NDTV Imagine’s ‘Pati,

Patni Aur Woh’ were she along with other 5 celebrity couple’s were seen taking care of common couple’s children which was also trapped in the web of issues where it caught public’s eye balls again. Is Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao by Sony was caught up in all together another wave of controversy as they showed the female contestants bathing in 2 piece bikinis and eating gross insects. Though it had everything to be a making of successful reality show it could not grab enough eyeballs. Small screen also saw the come back of Big B in Bigg Boss alongside debut of Rani Mukherjee as a judge in Dance Premiere League. Farah Khan the ace director and chorographer was seen turning host with Tere Mere Beach Main. All this was a new wave of freshness in Reality shows. 2009 did not just have feel-good and rona-dhona on small-screen but TV also revived its hit horror show ‘Aahat’. This was ruling horror show back in the past and once again it has hit the small-screen, with new colours and flavours. As for investigative shows CID is still going great guns and continues to impress audience. Sahara One’s ‘Mr. and Mrs. Mishra’ has pulled up its sleeves to attract audience with its share of crime solving cases. It’s just another year which is coming to an end and Television still has its viewers glued on. With the New Year we hope to see fresh content and fresher concepts for fiction to lure audiences. 2009 was a good year for television as compare to Bollywood. We hope new year comes with even better days for the small screen.
