SHAH RUKH KHAN tells JYOTHI VENKATESH that what he likes about My Name Is Khan is that Karan Johar has succeeded in making a different kind of film even while retaining his brand of Karan Joharishness. hah Rukh Khan is quite excited about his latest project My Name Is Khan directed by Karan Johar and co-produced by him with Karan, in which he has been teamed opposite Kajol. “Every director has his own inimitable way of telling a story. “My Name Is Khan is about relationships with elements of the Western world and Islam. It is not about a disabled man’s fight against disability. It is a disabled man’s fight against the disability that exists in world today- terrorism and hatred”. What sets apart My Name is Khan from his other films, according to Shah Rukh Khan is the fact that it is not just a film but a passion project. “It is something that will take me forward in a rightful manner. Every time I work with Karan, I feel like a big star. The film is not about any anti social topic. It is basically about relationships. I do not think that this film could have been called anything else. Even if this film had some other name, I am sure that it will still have a big impact on people”.

S

What is My Name Is Khan all about? I ask Shah Rukh. Pat came the reply, “My Name is Khan has got nothing to do with terrorism. I am not at all apprehensive on that account. My film is about the triumph of the human spirit. My Name Is Khan is a fictional story based against the fact. The story spans right from the age of 4 to 40. It is a story of the spirit and the sacrifice. My Name Is Khan is a journey of two lovers. One is a physical journey to find love and another is an emotional one to

overcome the obstacles and find love. What I like about My Name Is Khan is that Karan has succeeded in making a different kind of film even while retaining his brand of Karan Joharishness. My Name Is Khan is a cool and diligent film. I have absolutely no hesitation to declare that Indian Cinema would have actually been bereft of some wonderful films if only Karan Johar had not set out to make them”. How was the experience of working with Karan Johar? “Every director has his own inimitable style of telling a film. Kajol and I had acted in Karan’s debut venture Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Today, as an outsider, I can see his evolution as a director, even though I am an insider. Karan and I understand each other, because our thought process is similar. I am not that great that I can be humble. As an actor, producer and a friend of his, I feel that our film My Name Is Khan has turned out to be a big surprise for me because it is a huge step forward for him as a director”. How was your experience of working with Kajol after a long break? “Kajol plays my wife Mandira Khan in the film. Karan thinks that we are the best on screen couple. I want every actor to work with an actress like Kajol at least once in his life.I know that there are a lot of expectations but sorry to disappoint you, there is no Suraj Huwa Madhyam type of song or romance in My Name Is Khan. Yet all said and done, let me also tell you that even though there are no romantic songs between me and Kajol, the love story between

the two main characters Mandira and Rizwan forms the soul of the film. It is not only dramatic and important but also wonderful to the core.” Kajol and Shah Rukh do form a mutual admiration society. Says Kajol,

M Name Is My Khan is about the truimph of the human spirit. SRK “My Name Is Khan is the biggest film that Shah Rukh, Karan and I have done together so far. I’d say that Karan’s film completes us. It was an intense experience for all of us to go through working in a film like My Name Is Khan. I am speaking of Shah Rukh and me. It has indeed been a wonderful and fruitful experience for all the three of us”. Shah Rukh confesses that he is not a megalomaniac to title his film with his name. “My work is much more important to me than my name. I could have set out to call my film My Name Is Jyothi but then the title of the film My Name Is Khan is pertinent and has precise and logical relevance to the film.

If I was obsessed with my name I would have loved to call it My Name is Shah Rukh Khan”. Shah Rukh says that what appealed to him about the subject was the fact that it sets out to tackle the issue of how we can love in spite of things going the wrong way and how people can find strength in love. “My Name Is Khan is all about humanity and not about religion. My Name Is Khan is a humanitarian tale of love and sacrifice”. How did you prepare to get in to the skin of your character? I ask Shah Rukh. “Several years ago, I used to work with specially challenged children. In fact I had grown up with them in theatre. To, get into the skin of my character in my film, I watched a lot of videos of people who were affected by Autism. I even met a couple of guys who were afflicted with autism. Every actor has a desire to do something special. In fact, I’d not hesitate to state that I owe it to both Kajol and Karan for thinking of a subject like that of My Name Is Khan.” The biggest challenge that Shah Rukh had to face when he faced the camera for My Name Is Khan was to see to it that all who see Rizwan in My Name Is Khan should see him as a normal person despite being challenged. Without mincing words, Shah Rukh proceeds to say, “I would say that My Name Is Khan is a big deal for all three of usKajol, Karan and I. It is not only a personal satisfaction but also a step to the fact that Indian Cinema can reach a worldwide audience now with the tie up be-

big picture tween Karan and Star Fox. When Karan sets out to make a film, it is automatically a big film. My Name Is Khan is a big film. I’d even go to the extent of stating that it is the biggest film that has been made by Karan. My Name Is Khan is, not just a film but a journey. It is one of the nicest love stories in which I have participated as an actor.”Khans When the talk veers towards the controversy about his having been detained in the airport in U.S, Shah Rukh is really upset. “I have spent almost twenty years in this industry. Karan has spent 15. I think we are people with good thinking. We want to make good films. Both Karan and I are educated, sensible and sensitive people. We will not sell a film by creating controversies. It has never been an intention to create euphoria by creating a controversy. I know these are people out there are sensitive set of people, we are all the more careful not to show bias on any section of society”. Shah Rukh adds, “I am proud to be a Muslim in India. I can vouchsafe for the fact that I did not have to face any obstacle because of my being a Muslim in India. On that count, I have never had any issue in my life in India” Shah Rukh agrees that My Name Is Khan was scheduled to release in December but was delayed, because Karan and he felt that rushing it would have led to many compromises on a creative level. “My films are important for me. They are important entertainment wise, content wise. I am concerned whether people will like it or not; whether critics would approve of it or not, especially because today the New Age Cinema is not only brave and new but also entertaining”. In a

humble mode, Shah Rukh says, “Although My Name Is Khan has been co-produced by my small company Red Chillies Production and Karan’s Dharma Productions, there can never be a deal between me and Karan. Our coming together is more on an emotional note than for any monetary deal. I am fine but it will take me a little while to do a Mar jaani kind of song again”. Shah Rukh confesses that My Name Is Khan is the most special film of his career. “It is the biggest, most extra ordinary film of my journey till date. Karan has called me many times from the editing table to give me a thumbs up for my performance. He and others have appreciated my work. I hope I am good in this film. I hope that I do, not let it down as an actor and as a co-producer, because it has sensitive elements since the protagonist suffers from a grave disorder. We are trying to be more careful and also make surer that we do not give a biased presentation of the character. The film involved a lot of research and detailing and that is the reason why it is taken a long time to make. I hope, people who also have the surname of Khan will not sue us”. (Laughs) Shah Rukh says that contrary to the image with which he has been slotted by the media, he is a serious actor though many people think otherwise. “I try to give my best to each character that I set out to play. I also try to learn from every character that I portray on screen. I learn from every character that I play and try to better my performance with each character that I get to play”. Shah Rukh elucidates further. “The character that I play in My Name Is Khan –Rizwan Khan is all the more special as he suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome. I can’t cheat with the character of Rizwan Khan because the character has a disorder. I can’t have it in my style. There are internal as well as external crutches attached to the character. I love the protagonist of My Name Is Khan. I hope people will also love him and also sympathise with him. It is a very challenging concept. I hope people will like the concept. I hope the film will tug at their heart strings”. Shah Rukh defends Karan who has been accused of having engineered the controversy surrounding My Name Is Khan. “As far as the controversy

surrounding My Name Is Khan all that I can say honestly is that it was not at all a planned strategy from his or my side. It just happened and we had to deal with them. After attaining a certain level, I do not think you can resort to cheap stunts for the sake of getting publicity”. Shah Rukh who is a shrewd businessman too, admits that Karan and he were in talks with Fox for over a year and a half. “It is the first ever mainstream Bollywood film to be distributed by Fox STAR worldwide. I sincerely hope that the film will enthral the audiences across the globe. Fox STAR Studios have financed and will also set out to distribute My Name Is Khan worldwide. I think Fox has given us an opportunity to take Indian Cinema beyond horizons. When I first heard about Fox STAR, I thought that it had something to do with Megan Fox”. (Laughs) In conclusion, Shah Rukh displays his humane side when he tells me frankly that he says a lot of things a lot of time, including his famous statement that he is the only Khan here. Shah Rukh sets out to say, “Please do not be after my life for each and every thing that I set out to say”.

hen you think of a few good men with an unmistakable sense of style and pizzazz, you think Karan Johar. For the easy wit he exercises as he dallies with fashion. For his classic suits, flashing pearlies and meticulously trimmed nails. The film maker and television host stands at a double advantage. Not only is he stylish but also good looking. Of course, shrugging off those wicked ungainly kilos has helped him tremendously. Even in swinging his brand equity onto the ramp. Johar has now turned into a glam fashion designer, complete with his erstwhile closet of Gucci loafers, Ferragamo tuxedos and suave watches ranging from Tag Heur to A Lange. Appears that his eye for fashion pervades everything: even his glitzy guests reclining on bubble shaped couches in his highly touted talk show on the telly. Let’s face it. In this era of urban chic, uber cool and metrosexual men, KJo knows his brand. Here is a guy who turns up in a crisp white Rohit Bal linen suit for a Sunday champagne brunch, sports sleek Versace sun combatters minus the oppressive bling, revels in an exotic pink caviar facial, yet knows the difference between being a fashion victim and simply stellar. with his petrol blue blazer and in his expertly gelled hair. Kudos. Karan Johar is the perfect instance of how to flaunt your Prada carry-all right. The guy is always clued in with the latest fashion trends burning up the international circuit. No wonder he gets it right, bang on, with his immaculately cut jackets, natty suits, spotless shirts and ecru loafers. The slick persona has evolved over the years through a consistently innovative streak. It started off with the bubble gum hip turn out of Polo Tees and Ralph Lauren jeans, much akin to the characters in his first flick Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Then the zardozi brigade swooped down in his Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum. (Karan still appears in the most enviable sherwanis and bandhgalas at traditional occasions celebrated with friends and family). The New Yorker confidence shone through Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. In tandem, Karan appeared in muted polo necks and favoured slaty colours. Now with the onset of My Name is Khan, he has gone super chic, with charcoal greys and raven blacks. From his shoes to the hair stylist he favours, Kjo is simply passionate about what he does. And the unmistakable confidence shows in the lope. Ask him what makes him tick and his face dissolves into a smile : “ It is simply a celebration of who you are.” Caramba!

Reflecting on life, his art and bringing in the imagery of the beautiful mountains through his voice, Mohit Chauhan’s singing and writing has traveled many paths over the years striking a chord with his fans. While his career line has progressed by leaps and bounds, “Dooba Dooba” is still has the highest recall amongst his fans.

I would like to always strum my guitar and play for myself, though I was never really looking at doing shows or being on stage or anything.

Shridevi caught up with this shy musician who is breaking a new ground. Tell us about “Fitoor” and how you with the term personally? connect w “Fitoor” is something that overwhelms you. “Kisi cheez ka fitoor hai..likhne ka phir…sangeet ka..”. It’s bordering ya phir…s insanity. As an artist it’s something on insanit experience. Eating, drinking that you e sleeping only music; it keeps you and sleep away from “moh”, “maya” and other domestic indulgences and I think that strongest connect with your has the st thought it was an interesting soul. I tho name for an album. Although some material is autobiographical, of the mat it was not consciously done. It’s the inspiration and elements that have affected me that just got translated into songs. How has the experience of being on a reality show like “Music Ka Maha Muqabla”? I generally stay away from the spotlight. I get fidgety with it and prefer having less people around me. My interest lies in trekking or just staying quiet. However I realized that it’s important to break the mould and connect with people and television is a very powerful medium in our country. It reaches out to every little village and people want to see you interact. Unlike the reality show that I did on 9x which had a cause behind it, this one is completely commercial with a whole lot of singers such as Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal, Himesh Reshamiya, Mika and me. It’s the entertainment, the drama etc that the people enjoy. Yes it’s hectic for me and throws me right in to the middle of the bustle but it’s something that I’m slowly catching up with.

What brought you to music? It was always a part of me. I would like to always strum my guitar and play for myself, though I was never really looking at doing shows or being on stage or anything. I was a science student and was interested in acting. I had done theatre and was looking to join FTII but that course was shut just in time when I had made up my mind. It’s open now I think. If it was open at that point maybe I would have been an actor (laughs). The presence of Bollywood in your career and meeting and working with people like AR Rahman..how has the process been for you? Bollywood definitely gives you a lot of publicity, because the country is involved in it. I had met AR Rahman in 1998 when Silk Route won the Channel V Award which was catering to the non-film section. This was for the first album “Boondein”. The connection with him was revived years later when I sang for him. It’s amazing working with him. His studio in Chennai is a special space to be in.

great times with the band, making the kind of music that no one was doing at that point. What are the plans for 2010? There’s another album that I’m planning which I will start working on in a few months. Also I love traveling especially the mountains which now I don’t get so much time to do but when I go to meet my parents every 5-6 months, I make it point to just trek. Actually the song ‘Babaji’ has a clipping of this bird that was beautifully giving me a metronome which I sang in rhythm with and a friend recorded it. I have used it as a fade in on the track (smiles). So these are things that you discover through travel.

What’s the most important thing for a band to be together? Staying together depends on the people in the band. Maturity helps solve a lot of things. I have had some

Rietesh Deshmukh too plays an important chacterr in the film.

Anees Bazmee who gas given blockbusters like No Entry and Welcome is bringing another laughathon with a huge star cast - Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, Sushmita Sen, Kangna Ranaut, Paresh Rawal and Sunil Shetty. The story is basically about love but with impossible proportions. Dude, Kangana is in a comedy after all those superbly done psycho roles.

This film too brings the enchanting couple with Karan Johar again as the captain of the ship. Another film with 9/11 as the backdrop, this film tells the tale of Rizwan Khan (played by SRK) who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome. This is an autistic disease that makes the victim devoid of empathy. This, of course will give rise to many comical situations, just like last year’s hit Paa did. Star couple Abhidhek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be seen together for the first time in a film after they selected each other as life partners. Mani Ratnam again casts the couple in a modern day adaptation of the Indian epic The Ramayana after Guru. The movie focuses specially on Sita’s abduction by demon king Ravana and the aftermath in modern set up and supposed to have a twist ending unlike the text. The shooting has been plagued with problems since the time it ahs started shooting floods, elephants stomping around the set. But it’s surely going to be one of the interesting films of this year. Special mention for music by A R Rahman who has given timeless music for all Ratnam films.

After two lovely films as the lead, Farhan Akhtar’s next acting venture is about a loveable loser Karthik whose life changes forever after a chance meeting with somebody who also claims to be Karthik. It is a thrilling and romantic journey of this man’s victory against all odds and will feature Deepika Padukone as the female lead. The music credt will have ace combination of Javed Akhtar and Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy.

ACTION REPLAY If the rumour mill is to be belived, the story of Action Replay is based on the concept of time travel and is focused on a man who ages backwards. The film will be diected by Vipul Shah and will feture two big stars oppiste each other Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. A different film indeed.

Mega star Aamir Khan’s wife Kiran Rao is making her directorial debut with Aamir Khan Production’s Dhobi Ghat. A small budget film shot in guerilla style and has been shot all over Mumbai, it will have talented actors like Pratiek Babbar and Aamir himself.

The film has created ripples in the industry since Shah Rukh Khan is not acting in his buddy Farah Khan’s film after money spinners like Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om. Akshay Kumar will play a ‘stylish’ (metrosexual) conman in the film and will be joined by Akshaye Khanna too. The search for female lead is still on.

School. Her first film Karka Kasadara and her initial films in Tamil did not exactly make waves at the B.O. This would have fazed many but the leggy lass was not one to give up easily and carved a niche in Malayalam films. She took a hiatus from Tamil films and made a reentry with Dhaam Dhoom. “My Dhaam Dhoom role as a lawyer, I count as my best till date and my favourite as well. Working with director Jeeva was amazing, fantastic and an unforgettable experience. He was so professional, dedicated and is extremely motivating. While shooting he is a

With Mamooty in Chattambinadu different person and while not shooting he is completely different. He used to tell me never to club friendship and professionalism. While shooting, he kept friendship aside as he wanted the best output. It’s very sad we lost him. I still can’t believe it; it’s a very great loss for the industry. “Remembering the film, it was really tough to shoot in Russia during winter as it was freezingly cold but that was a challenge. After this film, I started becoming very choosy about what I did. “ I think today’s audiences are looking for new scripts. To me, more than the stars, the script matters. Today, even small films with good scripts are doing well. I want every film of mine to be different. My audience should enjoy them. To me, the money is not that important, I was born with a golden spoon. I have a passion for films”. After Dhaam Dhoom, Lakshmi Rai took on extremely glamorous roles that had the audiences sighing. In Vaamanan, where she played a model, she took the bikini route and set the screen on fire. “You can’t wear a bikini just like that. For my kind of body, everything in my wardrobe looks good but to sport a bikini, I had to lose weight and worked hard to tone my body. One needs to feel really confident.” Gossip is something that has never left her side. From rumours of link-ups with cricketers Sreesanth and Dhoni to her trainer recently, when it comes to her, the gossip mills work overtime. She keeps a cool head though. “Gossip is unavoidable in this profession. There will be some gossip today and something tomorrow, one must listen to it with one ear and let it out through the other. It’s part and parcel of this industry and I don’t react to it. I am used to all these now. A cowgirl role sounds rather offbeat and the pretty actress seems upbeat about this 2010 release. “When director

Simbu Devan told me the story of Irumbukottai Murattu Singam where I would be in a cowboy getup, I found it good and agreed. My character has plenty of boldness, attitude and shooting was sometimes even dangerous. “My character had developed a lot and gained importance and you will realize this when you see the film. The film has been shot with a brownish tone that gives it a Hollywood look. It’s an action film and I play a brave bold girl. “I learnt to ride a horse and this is not an easy joke. It looks easy, but there are so many things to learn. You need energy, stamina and strength to ride a horse. The horse is not in our control and there must be perfect understanding between the horse and the rider. The horses have different moods, it’s important to make friends with them before getting on one. “You can’t change horses in the film and have to use the same one throughout. There were plenty of riding and chasing scenes. The first few days I had a lot of body pain. This film is one of those with sky- high expectations and has been shot like an English film. It’s very good and has a fun theme”. Lakshmi Rai carries herself with grace and her height and hour glass figure help her make a style statement wherever she goes.“ People notice me a lot, so I never repeat my clothes. I generally do not like to match my clothes and accessories, I would rather contrast them. I do have branded wear but if I find something that looks good and fits well, I am not averse to picking it up even if it’s unbranded. I am not too much into wearing heavy make-up and prefer to keep my look clean and natural. “I usually wear a ring with a large pearl. I believe that this has had a positive effect in my life, as I used to be a short-tempered person till I started using it. Now, I have plenty of patience! To

some extent, I do believe in astrology”. “ My Bollywood projects are all in the planning stage, so I cannot reveal much. However, Bollywood prefers the lean look and I am working on losing weight. The dress sense there is also completely different, so I will be using a stylist and designer from there. She is also busy filming Malayalam flicks Chattambinadu opposite Mamooty, Casanova opposite Mohanlal and Droner. “Most of the characters I have played in Malayalam are homely and performance oriented. In Casanova, I play a lawyer of yesteryears, a very matured look where I wear large bindis. Something like what Shobana used to wear. “My dream role is like the one in Irumbukottai Murattu Singam, bold and action-oriented which takes advantage of my height,” she signs off.

Also starring Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HOLLOWS Be it the book or the film, Harry Potter has always been about astounding records. In the penultimate installment of the wildly popular wizard franchise, Harry, Ron, and Hermione go on the run from Death Eaters while trying to find the remaining Horcruxes. David Yates’ version of Half-Blood Prince was good but this time he prepares for the darkest of the series. Harry taking on Lord Voldemort is sure to garner one of the biggest openings ever. Watch out.

SHUTTER ISLAND 22 THE PLOT JANUARY ’10

ROBIN HOOD After the box-office and critical acclaim winner Gladiator, Ridely Scott and Russel Crowe teams up again for retelling of the legend of Robin Hood in mega-budget style. Russel has always been good with his roles, but this one where he will rob from the rich and give to the poor will definitely invite comparisons with the likes of Errol Flynn and Kevin Costner. Cate Blanchett will co-star as Maid Marian but want refresh button to be pressed so that we can get rid of the earlier cheesy Kevin Kostner version.

Already crowned as one of the greatest filmmakers ever, Martin Scorsese gangs up with his post De Niro favorite Leonardo Dicaprio to give another masterpiece to mankind. Here Scorsese adapts of the 2003 best-selling crime thriller novel by the same name tells the frightening story of two men trapped in a prison for the mentally ill in 1950s America. Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Williams in this outing of psychological horror.

The sequel to 1982 classic Tron, this film was supposed to come years ago thanks to the original’s cult following. It’s finally coming this year with Jeff Bridges reprising his role as Kevin Flynn, and Bruce Boxleitner his roles as Alan Bradley and Tron, while Garrett Hedlund will portray Flynn’s now-adult son, Sam. Olivia Wilde, Beau Garrett and John Hurt also have joined the cast. Here, Sam Flynn and his father Kevin fight their way through a super hi-fi video game universe where Kevin has been living for the past 25 years. The film reportedly has a whopping $300 million budget which makes it one of the costliest films ever and there are opportunities aplenty for effects and digital polish. Another Avatar in the making?

IRON MAN 2 Robert Downey Jr in the Iron Man garb gave a new dimension to the superhero genre. Now that the world knows of billionaire superhero Tony Stark’s escapades, the military wants to get their hands on his incredible inventions in the star-studded follow up to 2008’s “Iron Man.” Needless to say, the sequel is going to be damn exciting with great additions like Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, Don Cheadle as War Machine and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. If it’s half as good as the first one, it’ll still be one of the better movies of the year.

KNIGHT AND DAY After the 2001 blockbuster Vanilla Sky, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz teams up for another big budget action comedy. The story revolves around Roy Miller (Cruise) who is a secret agent and goes on a blind date with unlucky-in-love June Havens (Diaz), and ends up pulling her into a journey to protect a powerful battery that holds the key to an infinite power source. Sounds dumb fun; Cruise fans are already cheering.

In this one, Lucy and Edmund Pevensie return to Narnia with their cousin Eustace where they meet up with Caspian for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader. Though the Fox has taken over the distribution from Disney, the most popular book of the series is going to be a sure shot winner.

THE LAST AIRBENDER

VALENTINE’S DAY Garry Marshall’s romantic comedy has one of the largest all-star ensemble casts in cinema history with names like Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Julia Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Anne Hathaway, Shirley MacLaine, Jennifer Garner, Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, and Queen Latifah among others. Phew! Anyway, expect your girlfriend to drag you to watch it.

THE EXPENDABLES

THE BOOK OF ELI ALICE IN WONDERLAND The fairy tale prince Tim Burton takes up another much-loved story with superlative special effects which combines live action and animation, very much evident in the trailers. By the way, this ‘sequel’ to the Lewis Carroll classic sees an older Alice return (aged 17) to an overgrown and haunted Wonderland. Johnny Depp is up with another challenging role. Like all Burton movies, this is surely going to have the heart in the right place.

SHREK FOREVER AFTER Shrek trilogy has made us laugh out loud and love the adorable ogre.
