02 THE PLOT OCTOBER ’09

cover story

It’s raining fashion weeks, and when we talk about fashion can Bollywood stay behind? Let’s take a quick look at the fashion weeks gone by and check out the trend setters of this season who walked the ramp and stole the show… The recently concluded fashion weeks in Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkatta spelt the magical sway of Bollywood over fashion and the brought out the symbiotic relationship that suffuses both the trend driven worlds. While Sushmita Sen made people miss their heart beats, as she walked the ramp for Vikram Phadnis. The former miss universe walked the ramp once again in her graceful and elegant style. Women salivated more on the hot bod of John Abraham than over the simple pin stripe suit that he wore as he

walked the ramp with fashion designer Rocky S. While film stars attracted catcalls, whistles and press coverage galore, the spirit of union between leading fashion designers and their muses attracted more than just the shutterbugs. With Indian designers making the international cut and Bollywood raking in big bucks on foreign turf, it is simply a matter of time before films and fashion form a synonymous, lucrative nexus. Be it Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkatta the fashion weeks have become a perfect confluence of Bollywood and Fashion.

ollywood is definitely the largest fashion guide as a vast majority of public is influenced by filmi trends including clothes and jewellery,” says designer Aparna Chandra. “Rather than introducing new designs on ramp, it makes more commercial sense to introduce them through films,” she says. Look how veterans like Anita Dongre have tested the market. The designer styled the look for My Brother Nikhil, and then Sorry Bhai, ushering in billowing whites in off shoulder dresses for the saucy Chitrangada Singh in the latter. Her recent pret collections breathe in the magic of flowing pearls and ivories to capitalise on the buzz. Films clearly share a dominant, symbiotic relationship with fashion. That was the hip swinging Aaja Aaja era when Shammi Kapoor rocked the floor with his bold moves, chasing generous hipped, pouting women driving huge convertibles, with or without the flying scarves and the famous Sadhna fringe. In recent times, Parineeta blouses have been hopping off the shelves of high end boutiques in India and abroad at a crazy rate and Kareenaesque red bustiers are the manic buzz in the college going NRI population. Irrespective of the generation, there is an undeniable umbilical connection between Bollywood and the fashion trends it spins off. Whether you reflect on the collarless guru shirts popularised by adonis Rajesh Khanna, Sanjeev Kumar’s short kurtas with the parallel pyjamas underlining for the middle class appeal, the bubblegum pinks and flaming reds that accentuated the rakish Feroze Khan’s killer looks, Dev Anand’s puffy hair do and trademark scarf around his neck and Amitabh Bachchan’s bell bottomed pants, or even Asha Parekh’s flaxen lip colours, Babita’s swinging tunics and Zeenat Aman’s bohemian bikinis: The nexus between the filmi duniya O C T O B E R ’ 0 9 T H E   P L O T 0 3

and its resultant fashion influenced buyers never ceases to amaze. “These days each film is packaged as a brand in itself and spawns a collection of unique trends, simply owing to the phenomenal reach and impact of Hindi films,” explains Bollywood stylist Mamta Anand who made long, bright, woollen mufflers and the famous chilli pendant Aamir Khan wore swing into vogue with Fanaa. Whether it was the virtually backless blouse Madhuri Dixit wore in Didi Tera Devar Deewana... in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, that had every woman making a beeline for the neighbourhood darzi or the immaculately embroidered Pakistani salwar kameez Kirron Kher flaunted in Veer Zaara that upped the price of mojris and Karachi wear or the perfectly blow dried long hair and slinky chiffons that cloaked Kajol’s tummy in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the trend melee has been mind boggling. “When Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum released, we were flooded with orders for churning out the ruby red top and flaring low hip pants, slit on the sides, that Kareena wore in the song You are my Soniya,” reflects fashion designer Manish Malhotra, the man responsible for many such trendy coups, including the slim eyebrow, suave saree 04 THE PLOT OCTOBER ’09

sporting avatar of Karishma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani and the risque dresses Urmila Matondkar wore in Rangeela. “Bunty aur Babli made the flamboyant, collared cuts in shirt kurtis, patiala salwars and roguish shirts redefine street wear chic,” says fashion designer Aki Narula who set the trend. “Bollywood as a platform to showcase fashion reaches out to the widest audience,” reaffirms fashion designer and stylist Shahid Amir. “Creating trends through styling celebrities is something I enjoy. According to me, when a trend or a colour does well in a movie, the entire country wants to have it and be like their mentor actor/actress. Clothes worn in films portray a fantasy closet that many people wish they could have. Case

“The choice of clothes is solely dependant on the characterisation..” Shabina Khan to point is some of the looks I have conceived: like Aamir Khan’s tapori look in Rangeela, Fardeen’s hot bod appeal in Pyar Tune Kya Kiya and Janasheen; Vivek Oberoi’s relaxed kurtas in Saathiya and his mean boy demeanour in Dum.” “Why not?” says fashion designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed, the latest feted talent to join the filmi bandwagon. “Look out for Prince where I have styled Vivek Oberoi in cutting edge threads, like a sharp comic book character coming alive from the pages onto the big screen. In Aladdin, a fantasy spiel, there are mind blowing ensembles for everyone including Mr. Bachchan and then there is Blue, an action underwater film. Each of these projects carries production values akin to a super

Hollywood project. Moving into films and redefining trends is then but a natural progression for any designer of caliber.” Do then the characters decide the clothes or the spin off appeal of clothes makes it way into the characterisation? “The choice of clothes is solely dependant on the characterisation,? says leading film stylist Shabina Khan. “But yes, the idea is to create pegs that will sustain the popularity of the characters, and maintain the buzz around the movie. Like the hip turban I put together for Akshay Kumar in Singh is Kinng. It was total glam, in jewelled tones and spelt ritzy chic. It became a super hit with Sikhs worldwide, especially with the community in the UK. As did the flamboyant Punjabi printed kurtas I designed for Akshay. Then there was the red jacket that I made Salman Khan wear, for the song Dholi taro... in Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam. The amount of applause and imitations it won was simply unbeatable,” she shares. Clearly, gone are the days when star wives like Neetu Kapoor picked up soft, cashmere pullovers for husband Rishi Kapoor to dip into for his on screen antics; or Amrita Singh who paid attention to the minutest details to former husband Saif Ali Khan’s ensembles for movies, magazine shoots and maverick appearances. This is the era of Bollywood Cool where the country’s leading designers are leaping onto the filmi cavalcade as a natural progression from the ramp, to prod their retail footprint further. Indian style is in demand, as natty haute, hip attire. However unbelievable it might be.

cid Factory is about a group of characters whose sense of past has vanished in a haze of coma like they have woken up from sleep only to discover that reality could be a figment of their imagination. Their sense of right or wrong is heightened by this state of complete distrust and self-righteousness. As the story reveals through the hazy mist of confusion confounded by loss of memory, the audience is just shown the tip of the iceberg. A high-octane thriller where every second counts and every flash of your past is either a step towards realization of the true self or the horror of the discovery of who you really are. And then the games begin as our characters start to create stories just so that they can stay in the right but what if a roomful of people realize the majority is evil? Wouldn’t your instinct of survival dictate you to renounce yourself to evil to survive? Acid Factory plays out as a thriller, a morality play on the inside and a cat and mouse chase on the outside.

Ajay Devgn an actor par excellence juggles successfully with various roles he is playing in his life…be it a director, producer, distributor, husband and father he is managing it all… the usually quite and reticent Devgn talks to JYOTHI VENKATESH that he has been very lucky as an actor in the sense that he has always got the right film with the right director or else life would have been very boring.

For Ajay Devgn

A

glimpse at the first promo of Ajay Devgn’s ‘All the Best’ and you know you’re in for a laughter riot! The lethal combination of Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty is back once again, after last year’s smash hit Golmaal Returns. Actor -Producer Ajay Devgn is very confident ‘All The Best’ will click at the box office in a big way. “It is a rib-tickling comedy resulting from mistaken identities & hilarious goofups. “I am the producer of All The Best but that does not mean that I am hogging the show. Sanjay Dutt fans will be ecstatic to see the actor donning his comic hat after a long spate of serious & intense roles. Bipasha too, after her much appreciated stint in ‘No Entry’ is back to showcase her comic streak adding to the madness that All The Best has to offer. While Fardeen Khan’s ‘rock-star’ look is fresh & appealing, the ravishing Mugdha Godse looks all set to impress the viewers once

again with her ‘natural’ screen presence, after Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion,” quips Ajay. Ajay underlines what exactly All The Best is about. “Money is an excellent servant, but can be a horrible master’ finely defines a situation where an incredibly varied cast of characters weave together a story under one roof that constantly builds in intensity and surprise. Rohit Shetty, who has to his credit films like Zameen, Golmaal, Sunday and Golmaal Returns, has always been known for his mind-boggling heroic action sequences and splendid comedy. All The Best is a fine combination of just everything. Interestingly Ajay Devgn plays the role of hold your breath- Prem Chopra, a wannabe car expert Bipasha Basu plays his beautiful wife Jhanvin who runs his ancestral gym. Fardeen plays the role of Veer, an upcoming rock band singer, who is living on his brother’s pocket money. Mugdha

Godse plays Veer’s ravishing girl friend Vidya. Just when everything is going great guns in their lives , enters Sanjay Dutt, who plays the role of the upcoming singer’s millionaire step- brother Dharam Kapoor, bringing with him stumbling madness and generating hilariously awkward situations in just everyone’s life around. The outcome results into a rib-tickling humorous state where Veer and Prem handle the multiple vague characters arriving unexpectedly at their place and dealing with acquaintances where they proudly swank and cover up everything with lies, lies and more lies. Ajay says that he always knew that Rohit Shetty had a lot of potential as a director because he has watched him at close quarters for the last 20 years since the time that he was an assistant in his first film Phool Aur Kaante. “Rohit had directed me earlier in Zameer too. Over then years he has become more mature and clear about

the big picture what he sets out to give to the audience”. What according to you is the secret of your success as an actor? I ask Ajay. Pat comes the reply, “I should confess that I have been very lucky as an actor in the sense that I have always got the right film with the right director or else life would have been very boring”. Ajay’s directorial debut U Me Aur Hum did not click at the box office but he does not regret having made his debut with a sensitive film like that. “If only I had wanted, I could have easily made my debut with a formula film but then I was very particular that I did not want to do a typical film when I set out to make my debut as a director with U, Me Aur Hum” Ajay confesses that the job of direction was quite tough. “If you are planned, direction is not at all difficult. The feedback that I got was that every one loved the second half of the film.. The failure of U, Me Aur Hum did not shatter me because frankly I didn’t expect its collections to be extra ordinary like Golmaal Returns. I knew that making U, Me Aur Hum was part of the game. The kind of appreciation that I got from the audience was fantastic. However, I should confess that I was shocked at the kind of overwhelming reception that Golmaal Returns got at the box office”. Ajay admits that it was not very difficult to convince Kajol to act in U, Me Aur Hum. “I knew exactly how she would perform and had written the character that she played in the film actually keeping Kajol in my mind. When she listened to the narration, she fell for it and said that she would love to do the role. I did not force Kajol to act in U, Me Aur Hum, just because it is our home production but cast her because I do not think any other actress could have done justice to her role the way she did”. Ajay denies that London Dreams, which is yet another film of his slated for release later this year, has been delayed because Salman and he did not see eye to eye at all. “I have never been an insecure actor. It is wrong to say that Salman and I did not get along with one another when we were working in Vipul Shah’s London Dreams. Salman Khan and I get along very well. We have had no issues either personally or professionally because we respect each other. Vipul is an organized director and knew what exactly what he wanted from Salman, me or for that matter Asin who is playing the leading lady in his film. Why would a director want to spoil his film? Right now Ajay is busy completing

that marriage and fatherhood certainly Toonpur Ka Super Hero. “It has an change one for the better. You get more animated character, besides Kajol and responsible and want to spend more time me as the live characters. Prakash Jha’s at home with your kid.” film Rajniti will be yet another hard hitting When asked whether his wife Kajol and film from the stable of Prakash Jha, who he have any plans for Nysa in future, as of is known for his intense and thought provoking issue based films with the accent now, Ajay is frank. “Nysa is too small now for us to think of what she is going to take on politics, like Apaharan and Gangajal”. up when she grows up. All that I would like What is your criterion for saying yes to to state now is that I want her to be daddy’s a film offer? I ask Ajay, who comes up with girl, because though Kajol is able to spend a very frank and forthright reply. “Either I quality timer with her, unfortunately like a script or not. I see whether the producer and the commitments, I am able to spend very less director are both capable of ensuring that time with her”. the project is completed. I take up a film if Though Ajay had started off as an action and only if I am convinced by the vision of hero, strangely enough, he does not have the director. I have always believed in the even one action film on hand now! Thanks to the proliferation of the multiplexes in the metropolitan cities, distributors do not lose money at all these days. The producers of Black lost money but the distributors made money. In any case, as a distributor I believe in playing safe by undertaking to release the films on a commission basis”. ake Imran Khan for instance. His boyish charm darts behind fleetingly rakish stubble, together with fuzzy eyebrows, smooth smile and sparkling wit. Add to that the grey matter, a casual chic approach with a narrow tie thrown above a snowy shirt, snug, slim fit jeans and Converse All-Stars shoes. And Jr. Khan makes a winsome combination, zipping around in a racy convertible. Well it’s wisely said that a good looking, intelligent man is a wonderfully sexy, yet unusual find. The 26-something actor comes across as cool, calm and collected, thankfully bereft of the trappings that tether most of our desi filmstars (with pardesi accents) to Prada, Gucci and their ilk. He is the quintessential thinking

youth’s icon. The non-fussy star who exudes a sense of preppy persona and a wry, experimental streak in his casual Tee’s coupled with flip flops and relaxed, faded denims. He impresses, by not trying too hard to impress. As the straightforward, logical Jai in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, the shirtless, tattooed mean wonder in Kidnap or the man in black in Luck. In real life, Khan impresses too: with clean, clipped nails, big feet, unabashed commitment to girlfriend and love for his dogs Kajri and Tom Jones. He never leaves you tongue tied, though. “I have always had a fetish for ties. I have many of them some old and new. I never throw away the old ones as I have a strange affinity towards them. You can add one or the other to jeans and a T-shirt, and it suddenly becomes an amazing style statement,” he says. True. Here is a guy who butts out ramp spawned fashion trends with a flick of his brow. He is comfortable in his skin and it shows. “I never cared much about fashion. I like to wear what I am comfortable in. Style for me is the ability to look good without looking like you are making a big effort. I look for things that connect with me personally. Be it a tie, a pair of shoes, whatever; it should be a reflection of my personality.” He drawls lazily. Imran Khan’s attention to detail, for a pleasing appearance is evident, minus the bling hangover and heavy reli-

ance on accessories. You wonder what makes him connect then to the chill pill crowd. Maybe it is his careful avoidance of Bollywood’s spiel of couture pashas and their sense of slick style. Whatever it is, Imran Khan is one guy who has catapulted back into vogue sweater vests, slim-fit suits and skinny ties, minus the razzmatazz hoopla and public relations confetti. So a James Bond ritzy belt works, whereas a Ferragamo doesn’t. And it is that fiercely independent approach to his personal style that makes Khan abhor designers. “I don’t like designers as a rule, so I stay far away from haute couture,” he laughs. Then he makes his own rules. The dude’s crisply clad. Even as he pours himself into Diesel denims, a hand painted slim fit T-shirt and brown loafers. “I am influenced quite a bit from the West as far as my styling goes,” he admits. “Firstly, I don’t wear a lot of Indian clothes. For me, suit styling has got to be always based on Oceans Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen. I believe skinny ties are in and you have to match up to the world and not the West.” So discover out-of-the-box dressing with Khan’s ubiquitous keds or even canvas shoes teamed with a formal suit. “If I find a good looking shirt, I’ll pick that up in black, blue, white, purple and red. One in each colour. If the clothes fit me well, I take them. As for Eau De Toilettes, you will never sniff one on me. It is a non film star thing, I know.” We couldn’t agree less, dude. You, we like.

Na Raha

Happily Ever After, not always for this real life jodis… Coz’ just when you thought they made the perfect couple they broke up… A quick peek into top 10 Bollywood romances that didn’t last long…

Aishwarya & Salman

When the green-eyed beauty and the brat fell in love, it had all reasons to become the affair of the decade. This was one couple that always shied from making their relationship

public with no photo shoots or interviews or being spotted at restaurants. The break-up, of course, was a different story all together. The two fell in love during the shooting of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and the relationship lasted for two years. Aishwarya said she broke up with Salman after he admitted that he had been unfaithful to her. The break-up proved to be fodder for media for long with

Shahid & Kareena

There was something very endearing about this couple. Something that said they will always be together. Alas, the relationship that lasted for almost four years ended in a mysterious way. No one seems to know what really happened. Yes, Kareena was shooting for Tashan when she came close to Saif, but that’s all one knows. Shahid and Kareena were never overtly public with their relationship but they never made efforts to hide their love either. The break-up has been talk of the town forever and two years after their separation, Shahid recently revealed on Farah Khan’s TV show, that Kareena was his support system. 16 THE PLOT OCTOBER ’09

one controversy after another coming out in public. Details of the abusive relationship kept news papers and TV channel going for weeks. “I stood by him enduring his alcoholic misbehavior in worst phases and in turn I was at the receiving end of his abuse, infidelity and indignity. That is why like any other self-respecting woman I had ended my relationship with him almost two years ago,” Aishwarya has been quoted as saying.

Preity Zinta & Ness Wadia Theirs was a typical love story: A beautiful actress and a powerful business tycoon. The Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia break-up caused many a heart aches as this was one couple that not only looked together but portrayed a perfect image of fondness, compatibility and togetherness. While the nation was waiting to see the bubbly Preity as a bride, mommy Wadia’s disapproval of the relationship kept resurfacing. Another reported reason for the break up is the fact that Ness wanted Preity to give up acting after the knot was tied. Preity, a self-made person, found that rather difficult to do and thus, the break-up. While the two have parted ways personally, they continue to be partners in their professional ventures such as their IPL team.

Aishwarya & Vivek

She has always maintained a dignified silence about her personal life and relationships. Inadvertently, her relationships have ended up as nothing short of big messes. The Ash-Vivek break up is one chapter in the Bollywood break-up list that will not be forgotten easily. The (in) famous press conference with an agitated Vivek relentlessly relating juicy and satiating details to hungry media is a sight that is bound to stay in public memory for long. Sadly, that seemed to be the last time Vivek hit it big and was in the limelight. Vivek was out of work for long after his break-up with Ash and has till date, not managed to create his Company or Saathiya charm. So, what caused their relationship to come to an end? There seems to be no one reason. While some say it was her family that influenced her to part ways his failure at the box office was another anticipated reason for the break-up.

movie trivia Harman Baweja & Priyanka Chopra

When the initial reports of HarmanPriyanka affair started pouring in, it seemed to be nothing more than a publicity stunt for their film Love 2050. But the fact that Priyanka had always managed to stay away from such gossip and that spark in their photo shoots together lent it authenticity. However, as soon as the couple started getting recognized publicly, reports of their break-up hit the news. While the two remain good friends today and are all set for What’s Your Rashee, their next release together, this is one love story that never really took off.

Saif Ali Khan & Amrita Singh

Much like the Aamir-Reena break up, Saif Ali Khan’s divorce with Amrita Singh broke many hearts. “Well, that’s pretty private domain. Only Saif and I know what the truth is. Now I’ve come back at a time when both television and cinema have so much to offer me. I have to work. I need to work to support myself and my kids. No one pays for my support,” Amrita has been quoted as saying. The couple was together for over a decade and despite their age difference, the two portrayed the image of a madly in love couple.

Aamir Khan & Reena

What really happened? What caused Aamir Khan to part ways with Reena, to whom he was married for sixteen long years? No one seems to know the real reason behind this perfect love story’s sad ending. While Aamir has always been reclusive about his personal life, this was one time when all his fans were dying to know the real thing. They still are. Even after his marriage with Kiran Rao, who he first met at the sets of Lagaan where she was an assistant director, has been spoken and written about extensively. Aamir and Reena divorced mutually with Reena getting the custody of their two children.

Akshay Kumar & Shilpa Shetty

Sushmita Sen & Randeep Hooda

Who can forget the Chura Ke Dil Mera number with the hot Shilpa Shetty showing off her new face and sizzling body, gyrating to the tunes of heartthrob Akshay Kumar? There was something very passionate about the two of them together. While initially, the relationship was labeled as just a publicity stunt, with the help of public appearances and photo shoots together, Akshay made it more than clear that he was indeed serious about Shilpa. The two came close to each other after Akshay’s infamous break-up with Raveena. In Shilpa, he found a shoulder to cry on and in Akshay, she found a man who made her famous. The relationship ended after he started dating Shetty’s friend and fellow actress Twinkle Khanna after a previous indiscretion, which led to Shetty’s successful suing of Stardust Magazine for publishing a “damaging” report about the affair.

His claim to fame is being one of the many men in Sushmita Sen’s life. Truly bold and beautiful, Sushmita is one of the few actresses in Bollywood who has no qualms about making her affairs public. Most of the men in Sush’s life have been well-established but when she started dating Randeep, a newcomer, many eyebrows were raised. The two were generally spotted together and in one of her interviews, Sushmita even said that Randeep is her youngest boyfriend ever. She was also quoted as saying that she loves him and at the same time treats him like her baby! But like most of her other relationships, this one too didn’t last for long. In fact, after their split, Randeep said that he hasn’t really ‘split’ with Sushmita. He claims she is still an important part of his life.

Abhishek Bachchan&Karisma Years after their break-up, rumour mills are not tired talking about the break-up of Bollywood’s first family’s heir and the queen of the Kapoor Khandan. In October 2002, at Amitabh Bachchan’s 60th birthday celebration, Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor announced their engagement. While the entire country was waiting for the day when the two would tie the knot, the engagement got called off in January 2003. The tension between the families is believed to be the main reason for the break-up. OCTOBER ’09 THE PLOT 17

Katching up with Kailash Kher

Weaving a worldwide musical web H

is voice creates goose bumps, from jingles to record breaking albums…This talented singer – composer has come a long way. With every big leap he has attracted more attention and more fans. With an international album being launched, world wide collaborations and concert, Kailash Kher is on his biggest musical high. We present here some excerpts of his interview with Shridevi Keshavan their work. My bandmates Naresh and Paresh are more into the international music scene and have a lot of knowledge about all the interesting artistes. So keep updating me with all the latest (laughs).

T

ell us about your new albums “Kailasa Chaandan Mein” and “Yatra- Nomadic Souls”? “Chaandan Mein” has already been released and is doing really well. I’m more excited about “Yatra- Nomadic Souls” which is a big step up for us Kailasa as a band as it is being released worldwide by an international record label called Cumbancha based in the US. There are some old tracks on the album, some acoustic numbers of some of the old tracks rendered in a completely new style and some fresh tracks as well. How did the Cumbancha record deal come about? Cumbancha’s owner heard “Tauba Tauba” in the rickshaw while he was travelling to Kerala, He asked the rickshaw guy who it was and figured that it was playing in radio and the rickshaw guy had no clue about the artiste. So he wrote down the lyrics of the track from whatever he could make of it, researched on the internet and found out that it was me. He got in touch with me and the rest is history (smiles). Any other projects with the label? There are a few projects with some of the biggest international artistes of the world which we’ll be doing with Cumbancha. Some of the names on the list include the likes of Carlos Santana, Eddie Vedder, and Peter Gabriel etc. I have heard their names but I’m not completely aware of

18 THE PLOT OCTOBER ’09

What’s the best thing about performing in the West? Recently I performed at the Sterngrove festival Celebrate Brooklyn in New York. It was a very satisfying experience as we performed in front of more than 6,000 people sprawled across the venue not to forget the absolutely thrilling response from the crowd that makes you go into a dizzy. We got extraordinary responses from the organizers who told us that in the history of the festival no band has made the kind of impression we were able to on the music lovers gathered.

“When I was a newcomer, no one had any idea about my working style or potential.” How has working in the Bollywood industry changed for you in terms of your equation with the industry people? When I was a new-comer, no one had any idea about my working style or potential. Once you have an image which for me came through “Allah Ke Bandeh”, things change. The way people look at you change and not necessarily in a positive or negative manner but you just feel a change. They start expecting a certain style, working and singing which sometimes works to your advantage and at times doesn’t. Since you are a composer yourself, when

you are playing the role of a playback singer, does the composer in you clash with the creative ideas of the music director? See most of the music directors I work with, be it Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, SalimSulaiman or AR Rahman, give me a lot of space to weave my own style into the track. They know I’m a composer as well and don’t restrict me at all which helps immensely. And of course I keep the composer in me away when I’m a playback singer but suggestions are always met with a warm welcome and open –mindedness by most of them. Any interesting upcoming projects? Truckloads of tracks for movies whose names I can’t even remember. We are shooting a video for this movie called “Allah Ke Bandeh” which has a strong message going to people. It is being directed by Kabir Farooque; our track reflects the movie’s message and I think it’s going to be liked and appreciated. Besides that there’s this Hollywood movie called “Couple Retreat”, the music for which is being scored by AR Rahman and I’ll be singing for that. How do manage to spend time with your wife in the middle of tight schedules? Yeah…that’s a problem and she complains about it (laughs) but we sometimes catch a late night movie or go for a drive and I try to keep it balanced. How difficult is it to sustain a band? Be it a band or a family or any sort of group, it’s important that there is one individual who always acts as a bigger person. There are bound to be differences and things can always go wrong but it’s all under your control. It all depends on how you keep it together.

queen bee Our resident Queen Bee dishes out the buzz on telly land – but here’s a warning: it ain’t sugar and honey!

BIG B still rules the teleworld! The Bollywood biggies seem to be minting moolah on the small screen… The most expensive actor of the industry, Amitabh Bachchan is getting pricy with an astronomical rise in the amount that he will be getting for Big Boss 3. He is the highest paid actor on small screen now, beating the Khans and Kumars of Bollywood. “Initially it was decided that Bigg B will be receiving the amount of Rupees 1.5 crore per episode, but at the eleventh hour his price was hiked to Rupees 2.5 crore,” chirps the source. Elaborating more on the information, our source adds, “There will be 84 episodes of Bigg Boss 3 and according to that ratio, Mr. Bachchan has become the highest paid host on television. Akshay Kumar and SRK were paid 1 crore per episode for their shows Khatron Ke Khiladi and Paanchvi Pass respectively.” Salman’s price was hiked up for the second season of Dus Ka Dum. “For the first season of DKD, he received an amount of Rs. 80, 00,000 while in the second season his price was raised to 1 crore,” quips our khabroo. Looks like the Bollywood has adopted the matra – Apna Sapna Money Money!

Yesterday the production was shooting for the mahurat shot and called the actor. He just said that send me a car to travel. Pricey Pav Bhaji for Archu Salman Khan has surprised one and all by his charming self and most down to earth host. He has been surprising one and all on his game show. There were a total of 4 guys who played the best of 3 knock-out round and after the round each pair got one lac rupees, courtesy Sony Entertainment Television. But how did a bunch of 4 deaf and dumb youngsters manage to play the game. They had an interpreter who helped them with the questions & following the interpreter’s lead was Salman bhai who himself started to be more of an interpreter than a host. Salman surely has won hearts of millions… Accolades galore for Sallu.

My bee from the sets buzzed that Manav likes to eat pav bhaji and recently the duo took up a competition of who can eat more. In this task finally Archu gave up and the very next day the actress landed in hospital. “I was admitted in the hospital and was given lots of injections. This all happened because of the stupid bet of pav bhaji between me and Sushant,” chirps the girl who is now back in action. How stupid you could be Ankita. For now all’s well that end’s well so all we can say here is khana mana hai… I mean outside food and also betting se bach ke rehana girl if you don’t want to fall in trouble again.

Actor who studied less but scored high

Katti between Deepu and Jyoti

The guy who studied in the nick of the moment, only to get the highest score in the school exams; blessed with an amazing grasping power, this guy is an equally amazing actor when it comes to theatrics. Yes its none other than the handsome hunk- Avinash Sachdev of Choti Bahu fame. Well its really astonishing to see so many qualities as I though on small screen the hunks are only for the display But as we move further with our conversation with, Avinash reveals; “I hardly use to study for 10-15 days prior to my exams, and still I used to score the highest marks in the class. My parents always aspired for me to be an I.A.S officer, which was definitely not my cup of tea, but still I tried and scored high and was among the top in accounts for my entrance (I.P.S). But as I was really not that interested in studies, I wiggled my way out of it and turned towards the media profession.” Anyways Avinash, even if you have changed your route, your talent remains intact, and definitely your grasping power will not be wasted because, “Dialogue yaad rakhane mein bhi toh grasping power lagti hain, kyu Avinash!”

Sir Dilip Joshi Yes you are hearing it right but it’s not us who has given him this title! This kithab is given to him by his on screen wife Daya aka Disha Wakani. There is a small story behind this big title. Our bee went into the sets and probed it out the secret behind ‘SIR’. “Not many people know that Dilip has recommended Disha’s name in the show Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chasma. He is also very senior to her in the experience and age too thus Disha exclaim him as SIR.” It sounds so weird that your co-star especially the one who is playing your wife calls you SIR off the camera. My bee buzzed an aankhon dekha haal from the sets. “Recently while giving an interview to the news channel, she requested the reported that if she could let Dilip Sir joins her for that particular interview. The reporter was shocked to see Disha calling him sir and thus immediately asked the reason for giving him this kithab.” The secret is out Dilip… it seems now you have become old… don’t mind it

It is shocking news… but its true; Deepu (Varun Khandelwal) and Jyoti (Sneha Wagh) are not on talking terms! One of the most liked on screen sister and brother had a huge fight it seems, and thus they aren’t talking to each other for quite some time now. Our khabroo from the production house reports, “They had a disagreement on something, which turned out to be a huge tiff between the two. Thus the both are not on talking terms now.” “Their onscreen chemistry of bro and sis is fabulous, and nobody can make out what happened between the two. They are very professional and their personal problem is never a

hindrance in their professional commitments,” adds the source. Initially Varun and Sneha shared a good rapport. “Yes they had a good relationship, but then things went sour. It’s surprising for us also, and most of the time this is the hot topic on the sets too,” concludes the source. Such is life dearies… aaj katti toh kal batti bhi hogi!

Moti Mat Kaho Naa Well you must be guessing of whom we are talking about. It’s our very own Daya of Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chamshma aka Disha Wakani. Surprise!!! But yes this is what she keeps saying on and off the sets. Our bee from the sets buzzed, “She gets bit irritated when some one tell her moti (fat) and gets annoyed.” We decided to call her up and know the story from the horse mouth. “I just get angry when people call me plump knowing that I’m not that obese, but the thing is that my personality suits my on screen character of Daya but not the off screen get-up. I am still a youthful girl but I look like an aunty that do make me feel bad,” Disha quips. Well Disha this is is how our tele world works. Chote ko bada aur bade ko chota dikhana is the old trick. But as we moved further she also disclose, “As you know that Daya never wears any western out fits but in real, I only prefer western attire and that’s the problem for looking stout. The structure suits saree but not the western wears,” actress concludes. Uhhh Disha you seem to be very colourful but all we can suggest is kuch pane ke liye kuch khona padta hai. So all we can advice ki dil pe mat le Disha, believe in your self

Sneha Wagh was married It was shocking for me as my bee buzzed that Sneha Wagh of Jyoti fame was married. I could believe my ears but when my bee caught her in the conversation, truth came into light. She exhibit the same quality of Jyoti in real life too a simple, loving but not a girl. The only dissimilarity is that she is no more a loving wife. Yes you have heard it right the actress has left her hubby Aavishkaar Darverkar and as per the buzz it’s all due to her achievement as Jyoti. It seems the success has gone in her head. The actress got bit annoyed when she was asked

about her marriage. “I haven’t kept anything under the wraps. No body till now has asked me questions regarding my marriage thus I also kept mum,” she chirped. Though she refused to talk much about her past life as she now wants to look forward and work hard to make her show a great success. Well Sneha why are you getting annoyed if you have move over your past. Take a chill pill girl but always remember to keep your head on the shoulders as at the end you can never predict about the daily soaps na… O C T O B E R ’ 0 9 T H E   P L O T 2 3

JUNGLE

quick ten

Win!

The jungle queen, Mona Vasu is on cloud nine after winning the reality show Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao. The actress in a tee-a-tee talks about her experience and take away from the show. She also speaks about her popularity factor which has risen and also about the transition in her as she turned introvert to extrovert in real life. How does it feel to become a jungle

1 Queen? Obviously I feel good. We all have gone

through hardship in the jungle but at the end only one could win and it was me. I really thank my audiences and fans for supporting me all through my journey in the jungle

2

How has been your journey in the jungle? It has been a very exciting journey with lots of ups and downs for me. There were lots of things that I wasn’t prepared for like being on camera for 24X7.I am a very private person and loved my space so living with people and on camera was one thing I was not sure about. But at the end I managed to live and win the show too. I took up the show as I’m an adventurous person and the show had lots of challenges and thus I was very kicked about the whole thing. All I can say is that it was a roller coaster ride for me. The most memorable moment in the

3 jungle There are many but if you want me to

elaborate one incident than it would be the picnic on Independence Day. We all were given freedom for 5 to 6 hours and had fun on the beach too. Also we had a good meal on that day which was nice for a change. Another memorable moment was a fashion show in the jungle. Adding another to the feather of the memory was some stupid things like staying awake for long at nights and craving for tea, though it was a different case where we had to sleep without fulfilling our carve.

4

The most embarrassing moment in the jungle There was an embarrassing moment in

the jungle but that is too censored to talk about. All I can say was it is related to our changing room which was too small and the cloth hanging on the room was 10 inch uplifted from the ground so it was difficult for us and we had to be careful while bending too. (grins)

and most of the time too lazy to socialize and meet friends. After my jungle experience where we stayed with a variety of people, the experience has transformed me and now I feel more active than ever. Even my food pattern has changed and I have realized that too many spices spoil the taste of the vegetables.

do you think was your true friend 5 Who Besides you who do you think deserved there? The first person was Ishq Bector, he be- 8 to win? I feel who ever came in final three that’s came good friend and then it was Anaida. We had become really close friends all three of us still meet. Another person that I would like to name is Chitrakshi, she is a very positive girl. She always stood up for others and that’s what I like about her. Aman is another one to be added in the list thought we did not talk much. Last but not the least is Negar. She was the hard worker and a very sweet girl too.

did you like and dislike about the 6 What show?

Likes: - The challenges and staying experience in the jungle. I also loved those moments where I got to test my patience and endurance. Now I feel much stronger and wiser too. Disliked: - The food which we were given in the jungle i.e. either Soya rice or dal rice was bit difficult to gulp in. Basically I like to eat Soya rice but Chetan loved dal rice, so we decided that thrice a week we will have dal and other three days Soya. When ever dal used to come, I had to literally swallow it. Another factor I disliked was the uncut bathing scenes.

Chetan and Anaida with me are truly a winners. The winner was decided at last on the audience voting and I was thankfully their favourite but that does not take anything away from them (Chetan and Anaida). In short all three of us are winner I feel.

you think this show has provided the 9 Do extra fame to your name?

I don’t know since I have come back, I have been busy interacting with media and fans. But yes people now recognize me from the jungle and keep asking me about how I did the entire task and about whole occurrence in the show. All I can say is that popularity factor has gone up for me. But at the end I wish that good work comes my way, and I enjoy it

what is next project after your jungle 10 Sotrip? I have just recently returned from the

has been your takeaway besides 7 What winning the show? I have learnt to be more social. Before this show happened, I was an introvert

jungle so definitely out with family is my priority but yes I do want to go back to my fiction shows. I did get a lot of offers but there was nothing that interests me. All I can say that I did a reality show for the experience but to be frank enough I don’t want to go away from the fiction shows. So let’s see what comes next in my way.
