Mayara Lista Portfolio Kingston University Illustration/2014.2 k1450352
hello!! Considerations The works presented in this portfolio are part of the projects developed during the Teaching Block 1 of the Level 5 Illustration Animation BA at Kingston University. During this Term, I was challenged to work with different materials and process that have opened my mind for new possibilities that will enrich my work from now on. I am personally satisfied with my achievements so far and I am looking forward to keep experimenting and learning everything that I can.

OFF THE FENCE Our theme for this project was “Against Immigration. We decided to relate the immigration context with different shapes of plugs, extension sockets and adaptors to show the collapse of resources that might happen if the immigration to a certain country becomes extreme.

A PLAY ON WORDS
“Movement can result from the weight of the building applied to the ground. As an alternative, pairs of joints can be formed to accommodate differential settlement” The theme of my project was Concrete and I had to learn how to work with plaster in order to simulate the concrete’s effect. I have decided to focus on the word “movement” and It took me some tests to achieve the final result.
BEYOND THE FRAME
My start point for this project was the painting “An Iron Forge” from Joseph Wright of Derby. After doing the research I decided to focus on the mysterious figure of the Blacksmith. I had to spend many days at the Print Room learning Intaglio techniques such as etching, drypoint and aquatint. When I was confident enough with the process I started to work on the composition and frame of mu final image “A Feather Forge”. I have chosen to illustrate the contrast of the blacksmith’s labor by showing that he is able to use his strength and tools to transform cold iron in beautiful and delicate unique pieces. The feather is the symbol of the enlightenment brought by the smith’s work and represents the finesse he was able to achieve.
LIFE DRAWING
I definitely had a lot of fun during the life drawing classes. In this section you can see a small amount of drawings from the first and the second drawing week. Also, I did a few drawings during the short night course offered by the University. I believe that the greatest thing about these weeks was the collage works I have done. I am not used to do collages but everytime that I do I get really inspired by it. I will definitely do more of it!
LOCATION DRAWING
During the Location Drawing days I have visited the following places: Liverpool Street Station, the V&A Museum, the Hunterian Museum, The Institute of Sexology and the Pollocks Toy Museum. Also, I went to the ballet class of the Kingston University Dance Society and to the Somerset House Ice Rink.
PERSONAL P
PROJECTS
Among the projects I have been working durig this Term, I found some time to do a few personal projects. I did some watercolor studies, a Christmas Card illustration and an illustration based on the articlee Grey Hair and Silver Linings from Frank Bruni published on the New York Times.
