AP Studio Art

– by Ms. Kessel

This year I am so absolutely pleased to be teaching AP Studio Art: Drawing at Colegio Maya! This demanding, exciting, and creative course requires commitment, independence and maturity as students go on to create a portfolio of 24 distinct pieces that is then submitted to the College Board for review in May. I have taught AP Studio Art since 2010, and this year is my largest class to date, with a wonderful mix of creative, skilled young artists.

We have already commenced upon our studio art journey, with our first Breadth Portfolio project. Students have had a chance to view online portfolio examples and address questions and concerns. Most th recently, on Tuesday August 16 , the AP class and I had a FaceTime date in class with my former AP student, Nidal Dakhlallah, now in the American University in Beirut, Lebanon. Students asked her questions regarding her own experience as an artist and now, as a student of architecture. Nidal explained her own experience to the class, and addressed student concerns through her own experience, when I also taught her AP Studio Art at The American School of Kinshasa. I know this course only enrich the Arts here at Colegio Maya. Here are some photos to share of experience!

What is EL all about?

Meet your Teachers!

Exciting New Changes Ahead!

Dr. Fifield is a rising senior along with his daughter in having been at CM for a long time. When not hiking or paddling his kayak his vice is reading mystery novels. Do you have one to recommend?

Here is a basic course description of EL: Students will be learning science, math, English and academic writing through a series of interdisciplinary learning expeditions. Students will be expected to work together, problem solve, make mistakes, and experience authentic growth and academic success. In order to emphasize success in math and English, students will also participate in math and English learning labs. Our Course Goals: Students will accomplish all AERO standards for the 6th grade courses listed above. (English, Math, Science, Academic Writing and Adventure) Students will experience authentic, interactive learning through cross-curricular units of learning. Students will learn to authentically self-assess their learning needs and subsequent progress. Students will be able to explain their learning to authentic audiences. Students will experience growth in respect, perseverance, and responsibility through individual and collaborative work.

Dr. Fifield running a crew activity Mrs. Mazarakis is starting her second year at CM and loves math. You might have seen her around campus and known as a different name. Can you figure out who her husband is? Ms. Reynolds is starting her second year at CM and is a major bookworm! Come chat with me about what your favorite reads are. Ms. Naimey has been teaching at CM for 5 years and LOVES science. See if you can come up with a science question to stump her. Ms. Andrea has been teaching Drama at CM for two years, but she's been around for way longer than that. She loves acting, singing, and dancing, but specially LOVES directing students on stage! Ms. Sweat is the secondary music teacher and is excited to begin her second year at CM. She loves when students share YouTube videos of new music with her! Mr. Monteiro has proudly been teaching social studies for 12 years. He lives and breathes history, and loves nothing more than getting his students to see its beauty and its relevance today. Ms. Day has been teaching at CM for‌ guess how many years? She loves sports and fitness, especially soccer and mountain biking.

From LAVOSI (La Voz del Silencio) by Katia Morales LAVOSI's director Alvaro de Leon after making our final donation of Q40, 000. The money will allow the LAVOSI School to continue to function for yet another year, providing education for students with hearing loss. NHS is grateful to the Maya community for its support and is proud to be able to help LAVOSI students obtain a quality education. The members of NHS will continue working with LAVOSI this year. Our activities include improving our knowledge of Guatemalan Sign Language, attending shared learning activities, participating in sports and arts activities together and of course, carrying out a wonderful Miles for Smiles race in the spring!

Middle School Fine Arts - by Ms. Kessel This year in 7th and 8th grade Music, Art and Drama will be working together to bring students a collaborative class called Middle School Fine Arts. Ms. Kessel, Ms. Andrea and Ms. Sweat will be teaching together tying in Academic Writing and Portfolio requirements to the curriculum, reinforcing the learning they have in Academic Writing, while also strengthening the Arts Education Middle Schoolers will receive. Arts classes will now be one hour long, and a fully creative and collaborative time, where students experience the truly interconnected nature of the Arts and their lives as students and within our society.
