THE BIO VISION CAR “The object of the superior man is truth.”

T

he Bio-vision car, one of the prestigious gem standing at the RAIT circle and one of its kind in Mumbai, does not require any introduction about its beauty and the noble reason behind its construction. The Information Technology Department students amalgamated with the Tronix guys and gave the Bio-vision car another reason for it being so special and dear for we, RAITians. The Bio-vision car is now equipped with airpollution control sensors that include all the voluntary sensors like temperature, MAP sensor, throttle, speedometer, etc that help us monitor the pollution that any car would create. The Tronix guys gave their wonderful contribution for the project by working on the hardware components of the project and got the data from various sensors to the Arduino board which could then be launched wireless via a Bluetooth adapter. Whosh!! We are not done as yet. The

Information Technology guys worked on the software components of the project, developed our own android application called “BIO-VISION” which would then take the data from the Bluetooth adapter, connect to the arduino and display the values of the sensors dynamically. One of the most beautiful feature about this application is that it can send data to the cloud as database for future reference and create graphs as the values are read from different sensors. Mahesh Pawar, Chinmay Joshi, Arbaaz Dossani,Aniket Gharat from IT Department and the tronix group came forward with such a wonderful project and it was a huge success. This project would be void without the mention of our dear Principal sir Dr. Ramesh Vasappanavara, Mrs. Dipti Jadhav Head of Department IT and Mrs. Mrs. Amruta N. Chintawar. Without their efforts and able guidance the project would not have been possible. With some great talents coming up in every department of RAIT, we promise you that RAIT will surely be Paper-free but never Project-free...

A message from H.O.D Every organization shapes up by moments of inspiration, perseverance, courage, or dumb luck. The idea of ITSA was brought up by the finest and diligent minds from the Department of Information Technology and their work proved out to be a big success. This newsletter reflects all the finest things our department has come forward with in the last academic year. I am proud to see that the students of our department have put in appreciable efforts into creating this newsletter. It is good to see that today’s generation has not lost its literary roots, despite the perpetual efforts of Technology to extinguish the flames of the written word. This newsletter is exceptional proof that the literary flame is burning bright and is the ‘piece de resistance’ of the annual calendar of our Department. I look forward to see the juniors taking up the reigns of this newsletter in future, so that this tradition remains external. -Mrs. Dipti Jadhav.

ATTENDANCE APP

In engineering, attendance is one of the major reason behind students attending lectures. No matter whether a professor takes an interesting lecture or a boring lecture, for we people, attendance is a need. There were few problems with the existing attendance system like wastage of paper, maintainability issues, student proxy, calculating defaulter list and the major thing notification issues to parents. Few IT students thought of working on android application through which professors can easily take attendance and major problems can be solved. This application can work on any platform from Android 4.2(Jellybean) . It is free of cost and secured with algorithms like MD5 and SHA1. This app does not have network issues. Mahesh Pawar,Arbaaz Dossani,Pradnya Rahatal,Arwa Lokhandwala,Poonam Pawar,Nikhil Pingle and Rishi Kalapi from IT Department, worked on this attendance based android application and it was a great success. Mr. Atul Kahate has worked in the IT industry for over 17 years. Now, He has worked as a consulting author for Persistent Systems and had been working with Oracle Financial Services Software Limited, Pune as Consulting -6th February, 2014 Practice Director, where he worked for over 12 years, apart from companies such as Syntel, American Express, Deutsche Bank, and L&T InfoTech earlier. He has written 48 books with Tata McGraw Hill and Pearson Education publication. He has been involved in many IT projects in different capacities, apart from being a teacher and author of a few books on technology ranging from Cryptography and Network Security to Object Oriented Analysis and Design. Mr. Kahate delivered an informative lecture to IT students of RAIT, regarding various technological trends and cryptography evolution. The session included uses of various ciphers, cryptography techniques and Modern Cryptography.

PROJECTS

e-RAILWAY CONCESSION Local train is the lifeline of people of Mumbai, and students are no exception. Indian Railways, give students a facility of concession in the pass for train travelling, from their location of stay to the educational institution. College students have to wait for hours in a queue to get this form, from their respective college. The concerned college authority also has a cumbersome task of filling the student details manually on the form. The manual filling of forms brings many snags in the process like no proper validation of the form details is done, the form is apparently half-filled, past records are not maintained and many more. This leads to exploitation of the government provided facility. After analyzing all the problems and requirements of the hour, the need for automation was strongly felt. Manali Killedar,Akash Rai,Ankit Singh from IT Department had been

working on this project and it was a great success. This project introduces a web application which aims at eliminating the flaws and making the process efficient, time-saving and easy-going. This system provides an interface to the authorized students to fill their request for the concession form online. All the details that the student inputs are subsequently validated and verified through the college database. This completely eliminates the chances of misusing the facility. The college authority is also given an interface to view the entire request and simply print them on the railway issued form. Through this application, the college authority can generate department-wise and student-log report. Since, many details associated with the student are validated from the college provided student database, a complimentary benefit of this system is that it leads to an up-to-date student database of that institution. Around 373 colleges in Mumbai, provide their students, these forms. Looking beyond the ease and convenience that the system will bring to these many college authorities and a major chunk of students, it will also stop misuse of the government given facility by means of automated verifications.

National Level Network Security Workshop

Journey of Kalaraag

first day, a practice time session was organized for students to practice the simulations taught to them. The second day commenced with a doubt session on day 1 which was followed by an introduction to routing protocols & live configurations of static, default and dynamic routing. Another hands-on session was kept for students to practice on these concepts. The basics of switching, from its working, process, VLAN, Inter-VLAN, VLAN Trunking Protocol and the MAC Table building was covered in the phase leading to the final part of the workshop. The special attraction of the workshop: IPv6 was the final part of the workshop after which a competition was held on the concepts taught on networking. End of the session competition was arranged for the participants. They had to design a network using network devices on the CISCO Packet Tracer Platform. Among them best three got the prizes and appreciation. First two winners were eligible for National level competition at IIT-DELHI. This was very informative and truly hands on workshop. Participants gave positive feedback and they were willing to attend such programs for a long term basis. At last in valedictory program our HOD(IT), RAIT , Prof Dipti Jadhav proposed vote of thanks.

I

ts our pleasure to tell about Sharad Borde’s experience while he worked in RAIT-Kalaraag. When he started working for Kalaraag, there was always a pressure of being a sincere member on how would he opt for a thing like a cultural organization but later on he got carried away with the work and started to serve the organization, from being a volunteer and his first job was to guard the door of the auditorium. It may sound funny but yes it was the start of his work in Kalaraag. His journey of events and studies started in parallel. They were supposed to give the best Marathi cultural event to the college and also strive for their academics. He also started his acting career with it. Kalaraag gave him the platform to act and represent our college in Mumbai University, where he brought glory to the college for two consecutive years. The play “Ratra Lagnachi” stood 4th in Mumbai University. Another Hindi act play “Shaadi Ki Pehli Raat” which he directed stood 1st in Zone 2 of Mumbai University. His first event in which he headed was Iconoclast-National level short film festival. It was a big hit because due to the efforts of his team members, they were able to take the event to the national level in major regions like Kolkata, Haryana, Orissa, Delhi where the renowned production house Whistling wood also participated in these events. While he was in his third year (2011-12), Kalaraag started facing financial problems and was almost on the verge of vanishing. A new team then took over as the core committee of Kalaraag, where Sharad was appointed as the General Secretary (GS) of the organization. With the extended help by the faculty, Principal Dr. Ramesh Vasappanavara, Registar S.M.Gaikwad, HOD-IT Dipti Jadhav and Prof. Nilima Dongre, they took Kalaraag to the next level. Sharad and his team bagged the first position in Mumbai University. They managed many events and also brought Marathi superstars like Makrand Anaspure, Milind Shinde, Bhushan Kadu, Abhijeet Chavan and many more in the campus. While doing this he got three more raw gems from the IT department. They are known personalities in the college right now. They are: Satish Gaykar(2014 Batch) - Actor and Great Event Coordinator. Pranav Patil (BE-IT) - Event Manager and Actor. Hrishikesh Tambe(TE -IT) - Opening batsman of the RAIT cricket team, Actor and Event Planner.

Project Competition ITSA Techware’14

Project Competition was the event organized by ITSA RAIT in Techware March 2014 in which many projects like Hackers Detection System, Crowd Management System, Login Security System, QR Magic Box, Voice Recognition Robot, Sign Language Detection, Portable Start Menu, Hospital Management System, Touch to Print were displayed to the students and faculty members. Every project group was excited by the response and this motivated them to explain their work enthusiastically for hours. At the end of the day, Judges thoroughly examined every project and rated every project on the basis of Idea, Project execution, Future scope, Presentation and other details.Winners were decided on the basis of ratings which they got from the students, faculty members and judges.

WORKSHOP

he Department Of Information Technology successfully organized a workshop on Network Security in association with IIT DELHIACM on 14th and 15th March 2014 and got excellent feedback from the participants. More than 100 participants registered for the workshop, 35% of them were from other colleges. This was a 2-day workshop and students got the clear knowledge about network security and live working with networking CISCO devices (Switches, Routers). On the very first day our Principal, Dr Ramesh Vasappanavara inaugurated the program and welcomed our trainer Mr Vipin Bhat from Network Bulls. After that session was started at 10-30 AM. After the inaugural ceremony, the first day commenced with Networking Fundamentals & Networking Devices. The basics of networking and the devices used for networking were covered. The OSI Model and its competition with TCP/IP was illustrated in the session after a mini break. The concept of IP Addressing, CIDR and VLSM was also touched during the session on its first day. The next section covered the hands on sessions of Real Devices, IOS Basics, Telnet, Secure Shell and its simulation was done with extreme devotion. The final part of day 1 witnessed the configuration of Application Layer Protocols like DHCP and DNS. After the exciting

The Dream of the masses: TCS | Manasi Kulkarni Q

uite the same time in September everybody is looking out for a campus placement. Majority targets at the Day 1 company. TCS follows a systematic process for campus recruitment through their web portal. The selection process was divided into parts. An aptitude test which happened before it was the first stage. Clearing the ‘Essentials of Letter Writing’ section followed by aptitude, the next big task was the interview process. The technical one was quite an interview. The management interview was more of a brainstorming session. It involved more of judging an individual’s personality. However, the management interview is an easy trap. Too much talking or too much vague answers can lead to rejection. I was always of the opinion that the HR is the simplest of all. Just be yourself and sell your qualities. However, that day I realized that HR is a game changer. My HR round was a 1.5 hour long interview. Judging me from questions like ‘If you were trapped in a mixer-grinder, which is the safest spot you will be in?’ to questions which focused on my quality of being a team player. Here, the extracurricular activities matter a lot

The TCS Best Student Award: The TCS awards ‘Best Student’ award to every batch of engineering. Batch as in, the complete batch. In my case, the 2010-2014 batch, the winner gets a Gold medal, an appreciation certificate and a cash prize from TCS. The process is simple from a candidate’s view. One interview taken by the faculty and the Placement Cell heads and done! The nominations are given by the Heads of each department depending on the progress, behavior, performance, involvement of the candidate in all domains. This requires a thorough background check of the candidate which is done by the placement committee again. The interview was a tough one. There are faculties who know you all four years. My interview was taken by the head of the TPC, Prof. Vidhate. Of course, it was a grinding one. Out of 10 people, 3 landed up in the finale and I won ultimately. The felicitation program was pretty huge. We had all the placed TCS students, the head HR’s of TCS, the faculty of the college and my parents as well. It’s a great platform for anyone who wants a kick start in his/her career and set up a strong foot in the professional world. My Advice: Aptitude is a crucial part. That’s an entry point to the entire process. Make sure you are thorough with the aptitude preparation. Resume is as crucial as your own answers. A clear, concise and a verified resume stands a strong chance of selection and a good impression. Your answers make the final move. Be true and genuine. If you don’t know any answers, don’t fake around. Instead, politely reply that you don’t know. Honesty is an already assumed trait in a candidate.

All the best!

Current final year students Manali Killedar(IT) and Namrata Pillai(Comps) got placed in JP Morgan Chase Co. on 11th August. They were a part of the ‘Code For Good’ competition held by JP Morgan Chase Co. where they were selected on the basis of their resume for screening. The screening was an aptitude test for the students. The second round was the ‘Code for Good’ competition where students had to make an application using any language of their choice. After clearing that, there was a HR interview at JP Morgan office , Powai. On behalf of the IT Department, we congratulate and wish them luck for their future endeavors.
