Make rich, creamy ricotta at home with three simple ingredients: In large heavy-bottomed pot, heat 8 cups homogenized milk with ½ tsp salt over low heat, stirring often, until instant-read thermometer reads 203°F, about 40 minutes. Add ⅓ cup white vinegar; slowly stir 3 times. Remove from heat. Let stand for 20 minutes. Line fine-mesh sieve with 2 layers of damp cheesecloth. Using slotted spoon, gently skim off curds and place in sieve. Let drain for 30 minutes before serving.

In deep 12-inch ovenproof skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat; cook onion, stirring, until softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Arrange 2 lasagna noodles over top; top with 1 cup of the remaining meat sauce and half of the ricotta mixture. Repeat layers; top with remaining lasagna noodles and meat sauce. Bring sauce to boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium; cover and simmer until noodles are tender, 15 to 18 minutes. Arrange rack in oven 6 inches from broiler. Sprinkle lasagna with mozzarella and remaining 1 cup Parmesan. Transfer to oven; broil until top is golden and cheese is melted, about 2 minutes. Let stand for 15 minutes before serving. Do you have any tips for applying blush? There are two things that really matter: placement and blending. For the latter, be sure to blur the edges of your blush so it looks seamless with your foundation. At this year’s Cannes Film Festival in Elie Saab Haute Couture
Just days after presenting at the Oscars, while onstage at the Women of Worth event on International Women’s Day, Helen Mirren exclaimed that being at a ceremony that celebrates women who help their communities was better than attending the Academy Awards. It was only natural to feel a swell of girl-power emotion upon meeting Mirren, hours before the esteemed actor hosted the Toronto event honouring Canadian female humanitarians (where our own editorial director, Erin McLaughlin, also presented an award). Mirren has conquered the stage, TV and Hollywood, with numerous awards and accolades—including Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire—yet still speaks frankly and appears relatable. In 2015, at the age of 69, Mirren became the face of L’Oréal Paris and insisted that her wrinkles were not to be retouched. How has your relationship to beauty changed as you’ve aged? When you’re young, you want to try the latest mascara and to look cool. But in a weird way, that pressure drops as you get older. You get more knowledgeable about makeup; you know what works for you and what doesn’t. It’s extraordinary the incredible availability of product nowadays. I’m a kid in a candy store when I enter a drugstore. I’m, like, “Oh, this is so exciting! There is so much!” When I was in my 20s, there wasn’t that incredible variety. What 20 years ago would have cost you an absolute arm and a leg is now so much more accessible.

Women over 40 are recognized more in the
media now. What’s your take on that? Women who are now in their 50s or 60s have been professional women since they were 20. They’ve worked, they’re successful, they’ve got opinions and they weren’t seeing themselves reflected in the world of advertising. I was very much a part of the pissed-of generation, looking at photos of 15-year-old girls and being told that was how I was supposed to look.

Why do you think it’s happening now? I’ve seen an increase in the economic power of women and in their visibility. These big cultural shifts—and obviously we’re going through one right now—have a lot of foundation to them. They don’t happen surprisingly and overnight; there’s an enormous amount of building blocks that lead to those moments.

Why do you think events like Women of Worth are so important? I really admire L’Oréal for what it’s doing. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to be an ambassador. I love that a big company is stepping up to do more than just sell stuf—it’s about time.
Q
Why do you love makeup? We know we don’t wear it for men—well, maybe when we’re younger, but in general, we don’t wear it for so-called sexual attraction. We wear it because, as one of the makeup girls said, “It gives us swagger.” I love that word, swagger. It’s just what you feel inside, isn’t it?

yes, they doâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;every day. If people didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t change, therapists like me would be unemployed. I have witnessed incredible transformations as people recognize unhealthy patterns, uncover selflimiting beliefs and choose to think and do diferently. Perpetuating the myth that people are incapable of change is a dangerous form of discouragement that takes away not only an individualâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s determination to change but also societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collective capacity to evolve.
is sneaky. Its intention is good, asking us to behave honourably. A regret, after all, is something we wish had never happened. But whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lurking behind this sinister catchphrase is the notion that failures are to be ashamed of and avoided. What if, instead, we learned to see failures not as sources of shame but stepping stones? What if, rather than banning regrets, we embraced forgiveness? Then, regrets would become lessons learned.

Mentioning the almighty dollar shouldn’t feel taboo. It’s intertwined with our values, desires and goals, so make it an everyday topic of conversation; discuss what it means and where it comes from. As your youngsters grow up, show them your paycheques, as well as how you budget, handle bills and save.

Once they’re older, they can do odd jobs such as walking dogs, mowing lawns and shovelling snow; and into their teens, part-time work and babysitting are viable options. Commit to family time
Andrea Stairs Krishnappa, general manager of eBay Canada and Latin America, blocks of more than two hours per day (at least one in the morning and one in the evening) to spend with her five- and seven-year-olds. During those times, she puts everything else on the back burner. The takeaway? Don’t get sucked into giving up this special time. “No one will respect it if you don’t enforce it,” she says.

There are only 24 hours—a mere 1,440 minutes or a scant 86,400 seconds—in a day, and the bad news is we can’t change that. But the good news is there are lots of tangible ways to make and save time.
Schedule freedom
Lisa Lisson, president of FedEx Express Canada, says she blocks out three to five unplanned hours a week at work, plus three to five unplanned hours a week for personal time. “I call this my pause-and-reflection time. At work, I use it to reflect on my goals, the progress my team is making and so on. At home, I use it for ‘me’ time—to meet a friend for cofee, go to a hot-yoga class, walk my dogs or read a book,” she says.

Because it can quickly become what she calls the “everything bucket,” Forsyth categorizes high-priority tasks and parking-lot tasks. “High-priority tasks must get done, while the rest can be carried over to another week if needed,” she says. “If something is in the parking lot for a few weeks, I cross it of; if it hasn’t got the time of day yet, chances are it isn’t impactful enough to get attention in the future.”

“We moved to Canada together, which made me feel stuck with him because I’d made these big decisions for him. Ultimately, there were two things keeping us together: I was really in love with him, and I didn’t know if I’d ever love someone else that much. Women are often made to believe that the love of a man is the most validating experience you can have—why give that up? “I struggled with deep ambivalence throughout the relationship, but only in the last three years did I think about ending it. The final push came one morning when we were fighting after he lied to me. He’d made separate plans with a friend and with me, and then said he never promised to hang out with me. That day, I realized I didn’t want to be with someone like that. We had been together for so long that I couldn’t imagine my life without him, but I enjoyed figuring out who I am on my own. I didn’t realize how constricted I had felt. “Even the best relationship will go through periods of uncertainty. But I realize now I could have said that this relationship doesn’t make me feel good, that I don’t like who I am in this relationship, and that would be a good metric for not being in it.”

We didn’t do anything together or connect, and I was very unfulfilled. He’s deeply loyal, kind, responsible and dependable, and I figured the other stuf wouldn’t matter. And then it did. “I thought about ending it for four years, and the indecision became unbearable. Having a child made breaking up the family a very difficult decision. Most of my friends and family had no idea because I just kept it to myself. I did all of these things like therapy and a career change to make myself happier, but it just pushed us further apart. I had a lot of insomnia, anxiety and guilt. “We finally agreed to separate in January. We’d been to therapy, and the issues had been on the table for a long time, so he knew I was unhappy. We both agreed it wasn’t working, and he understood why I wanted to separate. I was a little angry, but mostly I was very, very sad. We’re still living in the house, and our son doesn’t know yet. We wrote up an agreement instead of getting lawyers. We’re still a family. I’m looking forward to the next chapter. I’ve realized I want all of the things my husband brought to the table, but I also need more.”

Women are more affected by stroke than men. What can I do to modify my risk?
Dr. Harvey says “It’s true—heart disease and stroke is the number-one cause of premature death for women in Canada. In addition, women, especially older women, have a higher risk of complication, disability and death from a stroke. A woman’s risk increases during and after pregnancy, as well as through menopause and her elderly years. Nonmodifiable risk factors include age, ethnicity, family history and menopause. You can modify risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, physical inactivity, obesity, sleep disorders and depression. Monitor your risk factors and, especially through and after menopause, ensure that you’re as healthy as possible. Know your blood pressure and treat high blood pressure appropriately through medication, if necessary, and lifestyle interventions; don’t smoke; limit alcohol consumption; maintain a healthy weight; be physically active; and eat a healthy diet.”

Dr. Jerome says “Rheumatoid arthritis is an immune-mediated inflammatory form of arthritis. While there’s no cure, talk to your doctor or a rheumatologist to get a proper diagnosis, which will determine your plan for treatment. The goal is to control the inflammation in order to prevent joint damage as well as to improve the symptoms of joint pain, stifness and swelling. If the swelling is persistent, it may indicate that the disease is inadequately controlled, and treatment can often be optimized with changes to your medication. Your doctor may also send you to a physical or occupational therapist who can teach you strategies to ease joint discomfort and exercises to help maintain hand function. Every expert I spoke with told me to stop seeing the week’s exercising in overwhelming four-hour blocks and consider hoofing it a few times a day in 10-minute intervals. Most of us accumulate the recommended time across several bouts throughout the week in durations as short as 10 minutes, says Maly. “Many of my patients take 10-minute walks before work, at midday and/ or in the evening. Some use an alarm on their phones to remind them to take a break,” says Dr. Walji. Three of those walks a day, five days a week, adds up to the recommended 150 minutes a week.

Don’t focus on steps.
Pedometer clips, smart watches and phone apps don’t motivate everyone because, honestly, the 10,000 steps a day these devices suggest sounds unattainable. Instead of counting steps, focus on how you feel during your walks, suggests Dr. Walji. “It should feel a little hard, you should develop a light sweat and your breathing will be a bit quicker, but you should be able to carry on a conversation without being out of breath,” she says. “If you can sing while walking, your intensity is too light.”
Get creative.
This isn’t about refusing elevators and taking the stairs (though that’s a good plan). Find other ways to get moving: Park farther away from your office; circle the field or ice rink while your kids are at practice; change one meeting each week to a discussion over a stroll; or take a spin around the living room during commercials. If I can get of my rear, so can you.

1. SENSORINEURAL hearing loss is the most common form of permanent hearing loss and is caused by damage to the inner ear or nerve pathways from the ear. It can be caused by age, noise, head trauma or a virus, among other things, and it can be treated with a hearing aid. 2. CONDUCTIVE hearing loss affects the outer or middle ear and can be caused by a hole in the eardrum, a trauma or an infection. It can be treated (depending on the cause) by medication, surgery or a hearing aid. 3. MIXED hearing loss is a combination of sensorineural and conductive. Hearing loss is considered a problem among â&#x20AC;&#x153;old people,â&#x20AC;? so many feel theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re too young for a hearing aid. There can also be a sense that the condition hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t progressed enough to warrant treatment; people tend to wait for hearing loss to start FRQFUHWHO\ DQG QHJDWLYHO\ DĚ&#x2020;HFWLQJ WKHLU day-to-day lives before seeking help. (This was true of my mom, who saw warning signs as early as three years ago but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see an audiologist until her ability to understand and connect with her colleagues was impacted.) Despite these reasons, the low adoption rate probably has more to do with the negative stigma associated with hearing loss. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People would rather get eyeglasses, take medication, use a walkerâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;anything but wear a hearing aid,â&#x20AC;? says Banks. This is partly an issue of vanity (unlike glasses, â&#x20AC;&#x153;thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing attractive about a hearing aid,â&#x20AC;? says my mom), but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also because people are afraid of appearing old or not in control of their faculties. On the contrary, the poor communication and inappropriate responses that result from forgoing a hearing aid are likely to make you seem less in control than the presence of one ever will. An easy yet eye-catching antipasto platter is a must for any great cocktail-hour spread. The key to building a crowd-pleaser is variety in flavour, texture, size and colour. Start with Italian cured meats (prosciutto, salami and soppressata are great choices) and hard cheese (such as Pecorino or Parmigiano-Reggiano), then add a selection of fruit and pickled or marinated veggies.

In large pot of boiling water, cook pasta according to package directions. Reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid, drain.
