CCScity450 Commemorating 450 years of Caracas city

· Urban Activation Project · · Fundación Espacio (Space Foundation) · · 2017 · Caracas (VE) ·
The CCScity450 project is born from the need to recognize or value buildings or places in Caracas that are part of the set of heritage assets of the city designed in periods of democracy. To celebrate the coincidences between the United States and Venezuela with the 450th anniversary of Caracas, the celebration highlights the shared history, focusing on common values such as the construction of the city of Caracas with American architects. The project proposes a reflection on the city public space from a set of activities and urban interventions on various sectors of Caracas, due to the need to recognize and value buildings, places and works of art, which are part of a set of patrimonial assets and of scenic, architectural and environmental value with the aim of exalting the history of the city and its urban and architectural traditions.

URBAN IMAGE Maracay’s Image Improvement Programme
·urban signage· The proposal is not limited solely to the design of the signage system, but must serve as a mechanism of execution, management and maintenance, in a way that allows the durability of the action. The SEU-2 Urban Signage Program of the City of Maracay includes the design of the signage system with all its specifications and variations, as well as the materials to be used and responds to the need to provide the city with its own visual system and differentiated that will provide a particular recognizable and defining identity while allowing equal recognition of all sectors of the city.

Tactical Urbanism
MARACAY Urban Image shows the physical, environmental, social and aesthetic characteristics of the city from the analysis of its fundamental components. It is developed within the framework of the improvement program for the Girardot Municipality and establishes guidelines and action strategies for the transformation of the urban image of the city. The proposal aims to recover and enhance urban dynamics in relation to natural resources and landscape, revalue the identity of built heritage, reestablish both physical and intangible links between different sectors of the city and consolidate new centralities. It concludes in the structuring of activities linked to municipal programs of coordination and monitoring of interventions, strategic projects of greater scope and impact in the city, maintenance plans on the different urban aspects, development of urban signage and finally interventions of urban planning tactics that seek the participation of communities in the improvement of spaces for collective use. As an Eco-Equilibrio team member, I participated in the general project development. However, my main area of work was focused on the development of the urban signage and its associated programs.

Specialized Mall Centre · Urban Agriculture 2016 · Design Atelier X Caracas (VE)
The project idea comes from the “El Hatillo” municipality needs, which has historically been characterized by its high level of agricultural production. The proposal wants to establish a local gastronomic shopping centre capable of providing its own natural products. A set of vegetable gardening platforms around which the shops are established. There are also two market spaces, one of which will be established under the garnening platforms as a temporary market, functioning as such during the day and as leisure and consumption spaces during the late afternoon and evening. The project focuses on the establishment of a “floating nature”, referring to the gardening platforms. Thus, a system of steel ribs is created as the building enclosure, whose profile rotates on its own axis depending on the spatial requirements.

Urban Redevelopment · Heritage Reuse 2016 · Design Atelier VIII Caracas (VE)
The project is based on the creation of a Cultural Center conformed by an elevated pedestrian walkway that relates to each of the buildings of the whole by connecting them. It is a space of passage or transition that in addition to hosting permanent outdoor exhibitions, generates a continuous path along the terrain, and together with the project buildings create a large central public space that emulates the superblocks developed during the urban proposal. Formally the project is constituted by a set of orthogonal buildings, following the alignment of the Shopping Center Las Mercedes. On the contrary, the public circulation path moves organically through space.

The objective of this proposal is the partial pedestrianization of Las Mercedes through the creation of centres of public blocks connected to each other through direct passages that create an entire pedestrian network, reducing pollution and converting the spaces into citizen places. The project envisages the widening of sidewalks in all the urbanization and the establishment of urban boulevards, which in addition to favouring pedestrian circulation, will give new life to spaces that are currently in the background.

Connecting the historical city with the informal city 2015 · Design Atelier VII Caracas (VE)
The project seeks to create a new cultural centre at the service of the community of “El Arroyo”, establishing connections between this area with the area “El Calvario” (characterized by its low economic level) and the historic center of the municipality El Hatillo. This is achieved by the use of a set of ramps, due to the steep slope, that connect the various spaces composing the cultural center, and becoming a passage through the green areas that virtually connect the communities of the surrounding areas , and culminating in a plaza on which the main volume rises, the library. Thus, the project seeks to promote cultural exchange and citizenship training through spaces for training workshops, libraries and small cultural events areas.

Limit Notions · “University Campus - Rental Zone” Reconnection 2015 · Design Atelier VI Caracas (VE)
The city of Caracas has been described on numerous occasions as a complex urban system made up of a series of fragments, such as a “patchwork quilt”. The discontinuity between these fragments has left fractures that build limits in the territory and hinder the continuity in the daily traffic limiting the possibilities of the citizen free movement. This workshop seeks to break the boundary (infrastructural and natural) that separates the Campus from the Rental Zone of the Central University. Both spaces are part of the same institutional entity, but it is clear that there is no urban connection (physical) between them, nor between the Rental Zone and its surroundings, which has caused its deterioration. The project is based on the premise that the Rental Zone must inevitably be part of the University Campus, establishing a meeting space between the academy and the city.

Over the Limit
A pedestrian crossing is established within the existing vehicular connection, following the architectural principles of the architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva at the University Campus and creating a direct access to the Central University of Venezuela by its north entrance.
It seeks to give continuity to the spaces of the Stadiums Square, which loses it towards the north side. It seeks to break the physical limits following the aerial logic of previous interventions.
