view waiting to ve explored." ----Kevin. Lynch 03 I am grateful for my one year of study as an urban designer and the people who supported and helped me. Through three major projects, including the Northern Quarter, Ancoats and New Islington and Belle Vue neighbourhoods in Manchester, not only did they enable me to get involved in urban design and planning, but also, they helped me to understand deeply the city, care about the city and pursue a better future for city life. These three projects were completed with robust analysis, from a neighbourhood level to being site-specific. With a solid understanding of these sites, design interventions are provided, based on a sound design framework to ensure that a logical approach to development is taken.

TA B L E O F C O N T E N T S NORTHEN QUARTER CORNER SITE
01
This involves a design proposal for a prominent corner in the Northern Quarter, near to the city centre of Manchester City. Originally a massive car park and Grade II-listed building, Brownsfield Mill, this is fully reshaped as a friendly, multi-functional and green neighbourhood.
GREAT ANCOATS & NEW ISLINGTON
02
This project delivers site-specific analysis within new redevelopment districts near an arterial road, as well as the city centre. The analysis highlights existing issues, constraints and opportunities associated with each site, leading to the selection of the most appropriate site for intervention. One of those sites is provided with a design proposal for better place-shaping to meet the set-up aims strategic design framework.
BELLE VUE MASTERPLAN
03
A 22-hectares site located beside Belle Vue Sport Village, including the newly developed Speedway, is insufficiently utilised, and includes British Car Auctions, a Showcase Cinema, the Diamond Hostel, and other two leisure buildings. In order to respond to the GMSF and Gorton development framework and to solve the existing issues in and out of the site, a comprehensive design proposal offers a friendly and liveable Gorton central community.

NEIGHBOURHOOD ANALYSIS Located within the city centre corner of the Northern Quarter, this site will be a key site connecting the newly developed city centre region, i.e. New Islington and Ancoats and East Gateway.
AIM The major design aim is to improve the connection to the community in a very dense and busy region and to create a dynamic and functional neighbourhood within the Northern Quarter and its new community. DES I G N The Sunken Plaza and Brownsfield Mill are regenerated as a boutique hotel with extended serviced apartments as branded services. Integrated functional areas are accessible for vehicles and pedestrians. A continuous retail frontage with sufficient car parking, e.g. multi-storey car parking, serves visitors, residents and businessmen.

An extremely dense urban grain to the south west is a result of the former industrial buildings still being present and a narrow street network. Moving further west through the site, low-rise industrial buildings and large areas of surface parking provide a poor-quality streetscape. As part of the Ancoats Urban Village conservation area, a strong focus has been placed upon the retention of heritage assets, particularly apparent in the cobbled street surfacing and orange-red brick buildings prevalent throughout the site.

Great Ancoats Street constitutes a major barrier to pedestrian permeability through the neighbourhood, whilst generating high levels of noise pollution impacting upon surrounding developments. South of Great Ancoats Street, the streetscape is dictated by a large industrial warehouse lining Store Street and adjacent, smaller industrial units. Also located on the site are various landmark buildings, most notably the Warehouse Aparthotel overlooking the site on the western boundary, and an orange-red brick listed former mill as Ducie Street kinks towards the city centre. Whilst the Ashton Canal corridor is well overlooked along the eastern boundary of the site, it is currently disconnected from the site as a consequence of being raised above Store Street.

The station is located in the centre of the site, its respective lines dissecting the site from east to west. Surrounding the station is a vast area of non-landscaped green space, along which are pedestrian desire lines running east to west towards Great Ancoats Street. Bordering the site are several landmark buildings. To the west lie two Grade II-listed mills dominating the skyline, whilst the Chips building overlooks the site to the east. The New Islington Wharf area provides a high quality public realm characterised by heritage assets, including two listed locks and the lock-keeper’s cottage.

ACCESS & MOVEMENT The access in the east of the site is based on the original infrastructure, while the western part, another entrance and new access roads connect the site to the neighbourhood. 0
LAND USE & ROAD HIERARCHY Along with a more accessible entrance, the infrastructure is developed in response to different usages and functions, which contribute to its permeability and connectivity.
