From the Head of School

Dear Mayfield Community,

It was so fitting that after the disruptions of the past two years due to the pandemic, we returned together in person as a joyful Mayfield Junior School community in 2021-2022 to celebrate our 90th anniversary. Throughout the year, our traditions returned, along with a few new community events as we rejoiced in being together. It was the perfect opportunity to honor our heritage and history while looking eagerly toward the future.

"Actions not Words" is the motto of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus and Holy Child schools. Cornelia Connelly, foundress of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, "developed an educational system based on trust and reverence for the dignity of every human being." She called upon Holy Child educators to respond to "the wants of the age" in which they lived. At Mayfield Junior School, this vision inspires us daily. At 90 years, we continue to embrace our whole child educational philosophy, look forward innovatively, and purposefully respond to the needs of our time.

This past year, our administrators and teachers created a new 5th-grade program that helped ease our students' journeys into Middle School. We invested heavily in personnel and programs in our Student Services Department to support our students better academically and socially/emotionally. Some were a reaction to the pandemic, but most of our new support programs were in the planning stages well before. A significant focus for us this year was celebrating our community. Gathering on campus for traditional in-person events helped bring us closer together. We enjoyed record attendance at the Mother Mary Christmas Tea and Benefit, celebrated our culture and diversity at the Family Heritage Fair, and proudly applauded the Class of 2022 at Graduation. Along with concerts, grade-level plays, and middle school athletics, each event and gathering became more meaningful.

This edition of the Maypoll includes our 2021-2022 Annual Report. Mayfield Junior School thrives when we all work together. The 2021-2022 donors who we recognize represent our incredible community. Your support helps to provide essential resources for the school's operation as we continue to flourish. While we all are navigating unprecedented times, we are blessed to have your committment to all a Mayfield education offers. Thank you to those who are long-time supporters and those who have made their first gift this past year. All of you make a difference!

As Mayfield Junior School moves forward, I am excited about the future. We will have a great deal to share with you in 2022-2023 about our physical campus and our continuing commitment to the whole child. Thank you for being a part of our joyful community!

The 1931 Circle: Partners in Giving

The 1931 Circle was established to honor Mayfield Junior School’s founding year and recognize the generosity of donors who have made a leadership-level gift to the school. Members of the 1931 Circle provide substantial financial support and make a significant impact on our ability to fulfill our Holy Child mission.

Within the 1931 Circle, three Giving Partner levels recognize those donors who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to Mayfield with an annual gift of $5,000 or more.

Victory for Mayfield at the 2022 Mustang Tailgate Benefit

The Mayfield community joyfully gathered at Spirit Field on April 30 for the 2022 Mustang Tailgate Benefit. For the nearly 400 parents, faculty, alumni, and friends in attendance, it was the first opportunity to gather as a group in more than two years.

Benefit co-chairs Mary Cole ’98 and Julie Soma and their event committee created an atmosphere for fun and festivities that included game-day hors d'oeuvres served from the back of vintage pick-up trucks, lawn games adjacent to a beer garden, and plenty of Mayfield gear that allowed partygoers to show their Mustang pride.

The Benefit is a beloved annual tradition, raising money each year for both the Mayfield Endowment and a special project based on urgent needs. The Tailgate was by all counts a victory for the home team, with the most successful paddle raise to date raising more than $140,000 to repair and replace Mayfield’s aging HVAC system. Proceeds from the silent and live auction, ticket sales, and sponsorships totaled $226,000 for the MJS Endowment, which provides annual support for salaries, tuition assistance, professional development, student programming, and more.

We are grateful to all who came to cheer for Mayfield and celebrate our awesome community. Go Mustangs!

Giving to Mayfield Junior School

Each year, donors provide the additional resources needed to maintain Mayfield’s excellent programs. These generous contributions from our community also allow the school to plan and execute upgrades to our facilities and curriculum to “meet the wants of the age” through the years. We are grateful!

Mayfield Junior School accepts many kinds of gifts, including:

• Cash

Current cash gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the full extend allowed by law and may be made with cash, check, or credit card.

• Appreciated Securities

A gift of appreciated stock or other capital assets can result in significant tax savings. You may be able to obtain a tax deduction for the full market value of the gift and avoid paying tax on the gain.

• Matching Gifts

Many employers will match employees’ donations, increasing the impact of a single gift and providing an additional source of income for Mayfield Junior School. Inquire with your Human Resources Department if your employer matches charitable gifts.

• Qualified Charitable Distributions

Donors who are 70 ½ or older can direct an IRA distribution directly to Mayfield. For those 72 or older who must take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), an IRA gift is a simple way to give while reducing one’s taxable income.

• Grants

Mayfield is honored to accept grants from private foundations, corporate foundations, donor-advised funds, and other grant-making organizations for unrestricted or designated purposes.

• Memorial or Honorary Gifts

A contribution in honor or memory of a loved one can be a cherished gift to an individual or family. Our sisters, faculty and staff, and students remember these special intentions in prayer at school Mass.

• Planned Gifts

Mayfield accepts planned or estate gifts of life insurance, charitable trusts, bequests, or real estate. A donor may wish to consider these gift vehicles as a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes while making a larger impact for Mayfield. Those who choose to direct a planned gift are welcomed into the Euclid Society of donors.

Celebrating the Class of 2022

“I hope that you will all continue to be compassionate and empathetic people who share your voices with the world.”
Joe Sciuto, Head of School Address

Congratulations to the Class of 2022

On June 2, family and friends gathered on Spirit Field to celebrate the Class of 2022. The traditional ceremony was perhaps a bit more emotional and more joyful as we celebrated both the graduates standing before us and the chance to be together once again. Graduation for this unique class was especially meaningful, as the pandemic so heavily impacted their middle school years; getting to this moment felt monumental.

In his address, Head of School Joe Sciuto shared his gratitude for experiencing his first “normal year” with this eighth-grade class. He praised their work in the spring musical, Children of Eden and reflected on how the songs spoke to rebirth and renewal especially the lyrics to “Ain't it Good,” “When my ears were filled with thunder and when my soul began to shake. There were times I'd truly wonder if those clouds would ever break. But no storm would last forever though we felt so helpless then. Now we raise a joyful chant.” Noting the connection to their tenacity throughout the last few years, Joe said, “You all made it through the storm, and you are all better for it.”

As the alumni speaker, Sarah Ryan ’17 reminded the graduates to continue the friendships they made while at Mayfield, and Student Body President Thomas Klarin spoke of character, describing his class as a positive force, resilient, generous, and grateful. The final speaker, parent Maura Harrington Roggero, noted her gratitude for Mayfield's caring community throughout her 16 years as a Mayfield parent and her confidence that this class had the best foundation for success.

Every year we marvel at the transformation our eighth graders seem to experience as they approach graduation. A Mayfield education comes full circle when a readiness to move on and start the next adventure is evident.

Congratulations to the Class of 2022. May they continue to grow with confidence, tackle challenges with grace, and make wise choices – and may they always remember Mayfield Junior School with the security and comfort of a second home.

”Class of 2022, take Cornelia’s Connelly’s words, “Actions Not Words” with you to high school and beyond. You have been a class of action. Follow your hearts, care for the dignity of all, and don’t be afraid to lead. ”
Joe Sciuto, Head of School Address

”We are a group of high achieving students, up and coming elite athletes, visionary artists, impressive musicians, but MOST importantly, we are kind and faithful friends to one another. No matter how far we go, the words of Cornelia Connelly and the principles of Holy Child Schools will guide us. We need to continue to live our lives with focus on justice, peace, and compassion.”

Meeting the Wants of the Age

In the 2021-22 school year, Mayfield Junior School celebrated 90 years of teaching and learning in Pasadena. The anniversary, especially coming out of two years of pandemic-driven flexibility, was an opportunity to reflect and consider just who we are – as a school, as a community - at this milestone moment.

Although we look very different today than the old photos and journal entries of the 1930s reveal, our current students and teachers share the same spirit and Holy Child ideals. An emphasis on the whole child and individual potential continues. A values-based curriculum builds character and develops empathy and compassion. These things are the foundation of Holy Child education. Still, Mayfield has changed and grown over the last 90 years. Grown and changed because of the passage of time and significantly because it is what a Holy Child school is called to do. Cornelia Connelly profoundly stated nearly two centuries ago that we must “educate for the wants of the age.” It was her belief, in a constantly changing world, that we must respond to each child,

encouraging, teaching, and helping them become the best person they can be for today and tomorrow.

At 90 years, we continue to embrace Cornelia’s directive. An integrated student-centered program provides meaningful and relevant connections and focuses on process, skill, and experience. In the 2022-2023 year, our Middle School is shifting from separate English and history departments to a humanities model allowing for greater exploration and understanding of complex issues.

Implementing a 70-minute block schedule provides time for differentiation and deep work. Advisory time is more intentional, and technology and design thinking enhance student agency and creativity at every grade level and in every subject. The "what" and "how" defining our school and our work keep evolving. The "why" or reason we do the work we do remains. The students and faculty profiled here offer a glimpse of who we are today - what matters to us, what makes us thrive, what makes us Holy Child.

Class of 2030 The First Year

The Class of 2030 arrived for kindergarten in August of 2021, wholly present, excited to make new friends, and eager to start learning. Their enthusiasm, combined with the resilience and flexibility they developed during very unconventional pre-school years, was profound and though still contained by lingering COVID protocols, a springboard for a promising first year at Mayfield.

Whether funny, bright, thoughtful or a bit rambunctious, each child contributed to the class dynamic, growing closer and developing strong relationships as the year progressed. Empathy and compassion seemed to come easy to this class. Quirks and differences were accepted.

Class of 2025 Entering Middle School

The Class of 2025 quite emphatically describes themselves as iconic. Spend any amount of time with this energetic group and it becomes very clear they are most definitely bright, outgoing, unique, and very confident. Like most pre-teens they love music, and are involved in many activities outside of school including softball, dance, and art. The class jumped into middle school feet first, bravely ready, despite the pandemic’s disruption to their third and fourth-grade years, socially adept and mostly unaffected academically. All appreciated inperson classes and the chance to be with their friends. Being together again was such a positive force for this group they found themselves making new friends and connecting well with each other as a whole.

Much of the ease in their transition to middle school was planned and intentional. Mayfield takes great care in structuring the fifth and sixth-grade years to provide consistency and a gradual jump in extra responsibility. In this supportive environment, the class really shined. They built strong relationships with their teachers and actively participated in everything from science experiments and Socratic Seminars to recording podcasts in English and staging a musical, Oliver Jr. An overnight field trip to the Pali Institute in the San Bernardino mountains further bonded the class as their fifth-grade year was nearly complete.

How do they feel about sixth grade? With the elf project in Ms. Wong’s art class, expanded opportunities in sports, KPals, debate team, different classes, new challenges and more – they'll take it all.

There were always multiple offers to hold a hand or extend kindness when a classmate struggled. Collectively the class seemed to look at each new day as a blessing. Time on the playground was a favorite, as was Spanish with Senora Zamudio. D-Lab projects and learning the basics of coding with Bee Bots sparked delight in being creative and solving problems. Reach out efforts helping the animals at Pasadena Humane connected knowledge with action as the children organized a towel drive and gifted handmade dog treats and cat beds. Meeting with their sixth-grade KPals was joyfully anticipated, and every day the warm welcome from their homeroom teachers, especially when hugs were allowed again, made the ordinary seem extraordinary. With the encouragement of their teachers, the class overcame obstacles to present two traditional plays. The Kindergarten Nativity Play was a triumph on an outdoor stage and the Noah’s Ark Welcome Play in May was a milestone moment as they completed their kindergarten year and welcomed the newly admitted incoming class.

With a positive mindset and great resolve, the Class of 2030 made the most of every activity, event, and experience. It was a tough year and a remarkable year. With challenges as unique as each child and setbacks to overcome, both teachers and students alike persevered with intention, finding joy in daily progress and the occasional miracle.

Krystyn Madrigal, Kim Murphy and Robert Thain Learning Center

The dedicated team of the Learning Center describes their work as potential-driven. They know it is all about personal growth and what that looks like for each student. What tools, strategies, and support can they offer to help students discover their individual potential?

On any given day, you can find Krystyn Madrigal, Robert Thain and Kim Murphy working with students in small groups or individually all over the campus. The Learning Center isn’t a place, but a program and a process focused on identifying the need, developing a plan or course of action, and building a relationship of support. With many schools recovering from learning loss following the pandemic, all three team members have spent many hours this year conducting student assessments with aimswebPlus to uncover learning gaps, distinguish at-risk students, and measure individual and classroom growth.

Kim Murphy is often found at the tables in the primary courtyard, surrounded by a circle of students. Reading and the process of learning to read are her passion. She has been a reading teacher at Mayfield for several years and, before that, taught first grade. Her role provides curriculum support – pushing into the classroom - often focusing on one task or skill with small groups. Kim appreciates the multiple grade level connections and relationships she can build upon working with students as they continue through grades K-4. To Kim, the best part of her job is witnessing the stages of progress, “…the light bulb moments when a student leaps from decoding and sounding out to reading then comprehension - those are a joy to witness!”

Robert Thain joined the Learning Center team this year, already familiar with Mayfield from teaching during the summer program. As a middle school learning specialist, Robert sits in grade level meetings to offer teachers

Scott Correll Humanities

Critical thinking, curiosity, and an open mind. Scott Correll joined Mayfield’s middle school faculty as English department chair in August 2021 with a wish to encourage every student he teaches to gain these skills and traits. “If they can leave my class with a broader understanding of the world, themselves, and their place in it, I’ve succeeded.” His ideals fit perfectly with Holy Child philosophy and Goals.

With 23 years of teaching experience, Scott continues to find his motivation in the potential of his students. How to reach them, engage them, and encourage them to think deeply rather than memorize content with limited understanding.

ideas on how to assist the students who are neurodiverse or have established learning needs and communicates progress with families. He pushes into classes to observe students, provides small group support when needed, and serves as coach for students who have independent study. “It is a privilege to work in this role,” he says when considering his passion and motivation, “the relationships are a positive influence, and at the end of the day, I feel I’ve made a difference.”

Krystyn Madrigal joined Mayfield’s faculty in 2021 as a learning specialist and immediately began working with Nicole Wirth, Dean of Academic Life, to establish the Learning Center goals and start the aimswebPlus assessments. Working with the data gathered, Krystyn does intervention with small groups outside the classroom and meets with those students needing the most support before school begins in zero period.

Krystyn has worked as a first-grade teacher, a reading and language arts specialist, and an education therapist. Her experience teaching reading with first graders inspired her to pursue a Master’s in education and specialize in reading and language arts assessment. The magic Krystyn believes, and what drives her, is seeing the support and skills she provides spark a breakthrough and progress. “I like to problem solve. Figuring out why a child is struggling and finding the concept or strategy that clicks – it’s a happy day.”

When Mayfield proposed a shift from separate English and history departments to a humanities model for the 2022-23 school year, he was all in.

Having taught humanities for many years at Crossroads School in Santa Monica, Scott believes the thematic view within a humanities model benefits the middle school brain. With interdisciplinary, skills-focused, and relatable concepts, Scott feels, “The humanities approach allows them to view things thematically – not leaving students to make connections on their own. There is still reading, research, writing – still measuring comprehension – the humanities approach does a better job.”

As grades 5-8 begin the humanities curriculum in the 2022-2023 school year, Scott is working with former English and history teachers as chair of the newly established Humanities department. Change comes with its challenges, yet the transition is exciting, and Scott is more than ready.

Kissy Linao, Erika Sears and Justin Velez Design Technology

Erika Sears, Kissy Linao, and Justin Velez came together in the 2021-2022 year as Mayfield’s Design Technology Team. With a focus on technology integration, increased student agency, and teacher support, they have reenergized and updated the purpose and use of the campus maker space, the D-Lab, and its neighboring technology lab. More importantly, they have encouraged a design thinking model for every subject and made it possible in any classroom or outdoor space on campus.

As Educational Technology and Design Coordinator, Erika Sears oversees the development and implementation of Educational Technology and Innovation throughout the academic and non-academic programs, working closely with Nicole Wirth, Dean of Academic Life. Kissy Linao, as EdTech Specialist, drives the integration of necessary technology skills into all aspects of education through curriculum design, collaboration with faculty and administration, and co-teaching. As Design and Engineering Specialist, Justin Velez manages the on-campus maker space, the D-Lab, with a focus on developing design and engineering skills.

Collaboration is the magic ingredient for this dedicated

team. Working with teachers and students, the team not only provides options and solutions but also their time with unmatched enthusiasm. If a teacher is interested in enhancing a section of their curriculum with a hands-on maker project or technology element- they are never alone. From helping to plan the stages of the project and possible outcomes to managing and supporting the students through the whole process, Erika, Kissy, and Justin empower all involved to utilize technology and the value of the process for deeper learning.

As a team, the three also help manage the iPads@MJS Program with application training and digital citizen guidance. A detailed scope and sequence is currently under development, noting skills across grade levels from basic to advanced, including everything from basic operations, file management, and keyboarding to online safety, digital art, multimedia, and more.

Always learning and ready to try something new, Erika, Kissy, and Justin live the growth mindset they encourage in their students. The dynamic in their partnership is visible– and contagious!

Kay Bowen and Lisa Byrne Performing Arts: It's All About the Process

When it comes to providing opportunities to build skills and confidence through performance and the dramatic arts, drama teachers Kay Bowen and Lisa Byrne never run out of ideas. After two years of virtual or semivirtual productions, the 2021-2022 year was very busy.

Every grade level produced and performed one or more plays. Whether workshop or full productions with sets and costumes, each required multiple rehearsals, costume fittings, and more than a little hope, patience, and trust. Although the result is magical, it is the process that both teachers love.

As actors and teachers (both Kay and Lisa are veteran performers), they know everything about the production process is a learning opportunity and offers vast potential for growth and self-discovery. And the opportunity compounds over the years. Basic skills first attempted in Kay’s kindergarten to secondgrade productions provide a foundation for advanced work in Lisa’s middle school classes and plays. Every introduction of a style or method of performance encourages new perspectives and creativity.

Kay sees her role as a guide or gateway to student expression, both emotional and physical, offering a nurturing, safe environment to feel comfortable trying new things. The confidence that grows with each

performance, from the Kindergarten Nativity Play to the combination of song and dialogue in the second-grade Character Matters, is extraordinary. Lisa then builds on that with specific challenges that develop everything from problem-solving to collaboration and empathy. The eighth-grade musical highlights the culmination of those skills along with expanded dual responsibilities of both actor and backstage crew. The growth shows as students begin to trust their instincts. For Kay and Lisa, witnessing students explore and realize their gifts is golden.

Saying Kay and Lisa are passionate about their work is an understatement. Kay is constantly inspired - finding ideas in everything from music to her dreams. Lisa loves learning new things through art, movies, plays, or books and centers herself with daily yoga. The energy, skill, and knowledge they bring to their own classes they also share through arts integration in everything from math to world languages. Kay teaches choral music to K-2 with two performances during the Christmas season, and Lisa is also the eighth-grade lead advisor supporting students through all the events, outreach, and community leadership projects the year entails. And as almost every teacher would say – there is always more. For Kay and Lisa, the more isn’t daunting – if it brings expanded opportunities for creative expression and growth - count them in.

From the Alumni Council Chair Bryan Lynch ’98

Hello Mayfield Alumni!

As I wrap up my first year as Chair of the Alumni Council, I'm proud and humbled to be part of an amazing group of MJS colleagues. This school year, I enjoyed attending and being part of several special events. At the Opening Mass, we honored our Golden Alumni from the Class of 1971. Later in the year, we celebrated my friend and classmate Brian Driscoll '98 as the Brian Driscoll Scholarship Fund reached endowment status, and we welcomed the Class of 2022 into the MJS alumni community.

I was excited to host the first Alumni Family Day in June. It included Mass in the renovated Holy Child Chapel, followed by lunch, games, classroom visits, and reminiscing with old yearbooks. It was a success! We had members from the entire alumni community join us –– alumni, alumni parents, teachers, and even current and future Mustangs attended. I hope to build upon this tradition for years to come.

I've enjoyed meeting new alumni, reconnecting with friends and classmates, being on campus, and engaging with faculty and staff. Mayfield has kept the timeless experiences and traditions such as Blue and White Day, Harvest Festival, school plays, and Mass of the Holy Spirit while creating new traditions to enrich student lives further. In connecting with alums across the decades, it is clear that Mayfield Junior School graduates are capable of making choices to enrich their own lives and contribute to the lives of others. It is as true today as it was when I graduated in the 1990s. You only need to walk the hallways, peer into classrooms, or catch a discussion between a student and teacher to realize the impact Mayfield has made on so many lives. Knowing this makes me genuinely proud to be a Mustang!

The many positives I see and hear in my role greatly inspire me to continue giving back to Mayfield for all it gave me. Alumni involvement is essential to the future of Mayfield, including growing alumni Annual Fund participation. My goals moving into my second term are to create more varied opportunities for alumni engagement, share more news from campus, and increase alumni donor participation.

With the support of the Alumni Council, I hope to reach alumni from all decades, career paths, life stages and all corners of the world. Remember, Mayfield is your home. You don't need a special invite or event to return to campus. Come back and visit us!

Mayfield Junior School alumni find their passion and true potential in many meaningful and dynamic fields and careers. Their personal journeys and experiences are unique. Following 2+ years of pandemic interruption, we wondered (and asked) with a few questions: What brings you joy? What do you value most? What matters?

Sean Eckhardt ’08

Originals Marketing Manager at HBO Max

What do you value most in your friends? Friends are family you choose. My friends and I, whether we met in middle school, high school, college, or in the professional world are very loyal to each other, we can be real about and talk through tough or challenging occurrences and also enjoy and share in life's highlights.

What is important to you? Friendship, accountability, ambition, finding fulfillment in work and life through something meaningful.

What are you currently reading (fiction or nonfiction)? Fiction- Dune by Frank Herbert and What Makes Sammy Run by Budd Schulberg.

Bryan Lynch '98 Associate Director of Development, External Relations at USC

What goal or habit has changed in your life? Interestingly enough, I've gone through 16 years of Catholic education starting with Mayfield Junior School. Upon graduating from MJS, I went onto St. Francis High School for a year, then transferred to Loyola High School of Los Angeles. Upon graduating from Loyola, I moved onto the University of San Diego where I finished my education. I value greatly that movement in my Catholic education which has proved to be fruitful in my professional life.

What do you value most in your friends? My friends and I couldn't be more different, which makes our bond very strong. Humor and our values, collectively, creates a HUGE bond between us. It's something that strengthens not only our relationships, but those of our collective families too.

What goal or habit has changed in your life? Managing a work-life balance. I procrastinate. A lot. Like, I'm really bad at it. Or good - it all depends on your perspective. Faculty & Staff Transitions

Mayfield’s program and community are made whole by the people who share their passion and experience with students and colleagues. The faculty and staff leaving Mayfield this year made unique contributions to the life of the school, some over many years and some only over a few. All inspired us, raising the bar with their focus and commitment, and all will be missed.

Retirements

Kathy Sweeney Director of Finance

In her 23 years at Mayfield, Kathy played an integral role in the school’s operations, including finance, human resources, facilities, technology, and Extended Programs. As a valued member of Mayfield’s Leadership Team, she worked closely with three heads of school, staffed the Board of Trustees Finance and Audit Committee, supported the Risk Management Committee, and led the Business Office. Kathy served on the COVID-19 Scenario Planning Task Force, worked with auditors, investment advisors, insurance brokers, and attorneys, and represented Mayfield with local, state, and national Business Office professional organizations.

Mayfield’s ability to offer our Holy Child educational program relies on a solid foundation. Our school is well-positioned financially and operationally, thanks to Kathy’s strategic and diligent work over the years.

Leena Berger Middle School Science

Since 1996 Leena has served our school community as an 8th Grade Science Teacher and Department Chair. She took great joy in developing inquiry-based and experimental learning opportunities for students. She sought to influence learning through hands-on experiences that provide evidence about phenomena in our world. Leena fondly recalls starting our school’s trip to Joshua Tree and coordinating excursions to Astro Camp and Catalina.

The news of her retirement completes a nearly 40-year career in education. Leena plans to travel to the East Coast, where her professional career began, visit India more often, and volunteer her time for causes that care for the environment.

Dorie Miller

Associate Kindergarten Teacher

Dorie Miller retired this year after 11 years with MJS as a kindergarten associate teacher. Working with the youngest on campus, Dorie truly loved and responded to the uniqueness of each student. The creativity she brought to the Lower School was a blessing. Dorie believed in Holy Child education and was dedicated to making the kindergarten year special for her students.

Transitions

Bridget Kelley-Lossada

Director of Middle School Bridget Kelley-Lossada informed our community in March that she would be stepping down from her current role to care for her husband, Carlos. Beginning in the 2022-23 school year, Bridget will be back in the classroom - and lending years of experience as a mentor in the high school selection process provided for our eighth graders.

In her 15 years as Director of Middle School, and before that as a teacher, Bridget was a consistent champion for those under her care. Our program is infused with more student voice and choice, innovative curriculum, and faculty professional growth because of her passion as an educator.

Always mission-led, Bridget provided valuable leadership during some of the most challenging years in the school’s history as a COVID-19 Scenario Planning Task Force member. She has played an important role in guiding the strategic direction of our school. During former head of school Joe Gill’s tenure, she contributed to Mayfield’s Strategic Design and, more recently, provided insight for the ongoing Master Plan.

Yunjin Kim Choral Music Director

As grades 3-8 choral music director, Yunjin devoted every day of her four years at Mayfield to elevating the music curriculum. Her high standards for herself and for her students fostered a level of creative professionalism in every performance and at every mass with student choirs singing multiple harmonies, rounds, and a diverse range of content. Yunjin spent every break, recess, and lunch time rehearsing with individuals and small groups, embedded meaning and themes into every lesson, assisted in musical productions, and brought music integration into multiple subjects including math, social studies, and DEIJ topics.

Brooke Barnes LaBonge ’04

First Grade Teacher

Brooke decided at the end of the 2021-22 school year to take a break from teaching to care for her young children. In her four years as a first-grade teacher, Brooke was incredibly organized and creative. As a young alum, she brought a deep understanding of Holy Child education to her teaching. Steady, patient, and kind, her students loved her.

Welcome New Administrators

Allison Castro joined Mayfield as our Interim Director of Middle School this August. Allison has served in Catholic school education for 14 years and in administrative leadership for the past 10 years. She earned her M.A. in Teaching and teaching credential at USC and began her career as an English and public speaking teacher. She served at Providence High School, a Catholic independent school, as Assistant Head of School for the past 8 years and before that at St. Genevieve Parish School as Vice Principal of Academics.

Director of Finance

Linda Rabitoy joined Mayfield as our Director of Finance in August. Linda has been the Chief Financial Officer at Claremont Lincoln University in Claremont, CA since 2013. Before that she was the Assistant Controller and Chief Accountant at Methodist Hospital of Southern California in Arcadia from 2000-2013.
