introduction

Design is a combination of rational and emotional thinking. I call it empathic design. To me, it is the most

important thing in a design process. It starts with the clients or users and their needs, and the empathic sense is our tool to understand what they actually want. I use an emotional sense to understand their needs, feel how they feel, and where they are coming from. Then I use a rational sense to analyze, form, and figure out a way to solve the problems presented within the project. A successful design does not only work with type and other graphic elements but also uses the perspective of others to complete a human-centered design.

objective /

The objective of this project was to develop an app for a mobile device. This app doesn't need to be about food or restaurants, but it has to serve a particular need. The process should begin with an original concept that is a unique solution to an existing problem.

solution /

This app will be used as a new tool for brainstorming. I defined the target audience and developed several personas, and from there made a creative brief. Then, I created an app, Brain Machine, that helps people develop their ideas based on commonly used words. This app offers classifications and relevant words for reference to give the user tons of ideas. Also, users can visit other brainstorming projects on the app and communicate with each other.

The goal of this project is to use and expand the basic principles of typography. It is important to not only use these principles but also explore new innovative ways to communicate with text and images. Communication will be developed in this project for both print and screen.

solution /

For this project, I designed a book and website that raises awareness about Autism. Most autistic children are thought of by many as just people who behave oddly. I created a book to show the special features and uniqueness of autistic children by using typesetting, colors and images and a tight layout. The aim of this book is to encourage people who don't know much about autism to realize how special the characteristics of autistic children can be.

The objective of this project was to develop a small book for presenting the features of Monotype. The presenting principle included typesetting and advanced issues. Also, we needed to investigate ways to communicate the content and text by using organization, hierarchy, layout and grid systems.

solution /

For this project, I chose a font from Monotype, and I studied the background of the font, and combined historical features and related elements together. I used a different hierarchy of letters and grid systems to create an interesting layout, and used a Christmas-themed color palette to present a consistent style.

objective /

The goal of this project was to identify a problem for a selected topic. Based on the problem, we needed to figure out effective ways using graphic design to solve it. The approach should use a consistent visual system. We also needed to study how to identify the target audience, competitors, and stakeholders.

solution /

Based on observing our environment, I identified a problem about people consuming meat and how it affects the environment as well as its impact on our health and the lives of animals. I created an event which raised awareness about eating vegetarian as an alternative to meat and developed a visual system for all the deliverables. The aim of this project is to encourage people to realize the positive effect of vegetarian diets, and to learn dietary knowledge and recipes through a website and an app.

Animal Help Now App Redesign type of project /

UI/UX Design year of completion /

Spring 2018 course /

Ryan Medeiros t ypeface /

Avenir color palet te /

objective /

The objective of this project was to find an app that is not user-friendly and redesign it. Based on the UI/ UX principles of usability, functionality, simplicity, accessibility and engagement, we needed to identify three functions to improve. Then, we needed to redesign the app to not only improve these functions, but also increase the overall user experience.

solution /

I chose an app for animal emergencies. It was textdriven and filled with body copy. I used basic graphic elements to identify functions instead of the existing text, and made different scale contrasts between icons and text. Also, based on repeated testing, I simplified the app in significant ways to improve user experience. By making it easier for the user, it also became faster, which could save animals' lives.

objective /

The goal of this course was to create a series of movie posters through an experimental process. We avoided using digital tools, and instead used various materials and the outcomes for their emotional affect. Then, we applied these typographic transformations to the final poster design.

solution /

At the beginning of this project, I used brainstorming techniques and sketches to explore different ways to experiment with type. I observed the character traits of each outcome. Based on the deformed type that came out of the process, I combined various traits and used a kaleidoscope to design posters for the movie, Get Out.

objective /

The objective of this course was to visually and verbally understand identity and branding by studying a variety of businesses and their organizational structures. I focused on one business and investigated its brand history, then redefined its identity, target audience, and the extensions to its brand.

solution /

This project was about reviving and redefining the defunct bookstore brand, "Borders." First, I investigated the brand and its history, then redefined its mission and brand soul to be a platform where artists teach and share creative ideas with each other. Based on Borders' new mission, I used vivid colors and graphic elements to create the new identity and keep a consistent visual system in the brand's extensions.

objective /

The goal of this project was to choose three books and redesign their covers into a series. I used a similar treatment on each book cover to create a cohesive system. In the design process, we needed to consider the target audience, the typeface, the color palette, and the grid system. solution /

This was a series of books for women. In this project, I used neutral colors and a complementary illustration style to show the soul of these books in their covers. Also, I wanted to reflect the elegance in the writing by using a serif typeface. The aim of this project was to encourage women to reach for their dreams bravely and see the power within themselves.
