This year’s new class is set to be one of the biggest, smartest and diverse that we’ve seen. We’ve been set on a trend of growth the past couple of years, and we’re going to see quite a bit more coming up. As a senior this year, I can’t help but be nostalgic sitting in front of Patterson Office Tower or walking through Gatton. But my time here has been marked by the growth of this university, and I don’t mean just walking the long way to class to avoid construction areas. Each class hopefully makes things better for the next, and I hope we leave behind a better campus for those who replace us.

STUDENT PROFILE By Taylor Clements
Style
Bella Fugate, a merchandising, apparels and textiles sophomore at UK, loves fashion. We caught up with Bella to ask about her shopping tendencies and favorite trends in our student fashion profile. How would you describe your style?
Who are your favorite designers?
My style has been described as a lot of things by a lot of people.
I absolutely adore Marc Jacobs, Giorgio Armani, Zac

wear T-shirts really ever.
When you have no idea what to wear, what is your go-to outfit? I have this giant oversized red and black plaid shirt that I wear with black jeans and boots that I always fall back on when I don’t know what to wear. What fashion advice do you have for freshmen here at UK? Personal style is something that is really important as a form of self expression. In college, a big thing is finding yourself. It might seem silly, but really developing your own sense of personal style really helps with that. Dressing how you want really helps you “be yourself” and not get caught up in conforming. When you interview for that dream job you want, having a strong sense of individuality will help you stand out against that competition.

Boots
Because the winters have gotten a little wonky, you’ll need more than just rain boots to keep your feet warm and dry. A majority of the students wear L.L. Bean or Hunter boots, but there are plenty of other options. If you’re budget-conscious, check out Target or Kohls for cheapies that will get you through the season. Or if you’re looking for something outside the norm, try J. Crew, Zara or Urban Outfitters.
Umbrella
There is nothing more unfortunate than seeing someone walking in the rain through campus with a banged-up umbrella. I cannot emphasize this enough: you need a durable umbrella. I’m not talking about the cheap, fold-up ones from Rite Aid. I’m talking the heavy-duty golf or bubble umbrellas. They are the only tried-and-true way to make it to class without getting soaked.
Scarf
One thing we know to be an
absolute truth: Kentucky weather
is crazy. More than likely, one of
your ‘welcome to UK’ moments will happen outside of Patterson Office
Tower or while crossing the street on Avenue of Champions. The streets here flood when it rains and there's a constant wind tunnel surrounding POT. The winter, when it arrive s in February, brings bitter cold and absurd amounts of snow. In short, you’ll need to be prepared. Along with textbooks and school supplies, UK students know weather apparel is an essential part of school year prep. Here are the essentials for surviving UK weather.

In the fall, the breeze flowing through campus is lovely. Then winter hits and the breeze turns into an icy arctic blast that chills you to the bone. No matter the season, never leave home without a trusty scarf — the thick kind that can double as a blanket when the heat in your classroom hasn’t been turned on. If you don’t have a friend that can knit, Gap, Zara, Anthropologie, and Etsy are your best bets.
Gloves
These are tricky. We all know that your fingers are the first to loose heat, so you need to make sure to keep them warm. But, if you also want to text or change the song on your phone, you need the ugly texting gloves. Fear not, I have found a middle ground: nice-looking gloves that keep you warm and let you text. Check out Glider Gloves, Ann Taylor Loft, The North Face and SNAP Creativity.
Trench Coat
This is the all-time best way to be prepared for the weather and still look good. Real trenches are water resistant and fully lined; so they’ll keep the water off of your clothes and keep you warm. They’re somewhere in between a jacket and a winter coat, so they’re perfect for layering and you can throw them over almost anything (even workout clothes) and look pulledtogether. Top-of-the-line is Burberry, but those are incredibly expensive. Zara, Urban Outfitters, Banana Republic, Gap and H&M will give you the most bang for your buck.
LADIES
We all need something to put our stuff in. But who says we can’t have a little fun with it?

DORM RECIPES Question: What can you do with a microwave, a mug and a few minutes? Answer: Make some of the most delicious food you’ve ever eaten (okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration). We know that you’re short on time, cash, and yummy food, so we’ve scoured the interwebs and found two delectable recipes to test out from the comfort of your own dorm. Bon appetit!
Coffee cup quiche Ingredients: 1 egg | 1.5 tbsp milk | 1/4 of a bagel or similar French bread | 2 tbsp cream cheese | 1/2 slice of ham | fresh or dried herbs | Dijon mustard | salt and pepper to taste
1. Beat egg and milk together with a fork in a mug, adding salt and pepper to taste. Tear bread into dime-size pieces; add to mug. Stir in cream cheese. Tear or cut ham into small pieces; add to mug. Sprinkle with herbs.
2. Microwave on high until done, about 1 minute and 10 seconds. Garnish with mustard and herbs. Recipe courtesy of St. Louis Post-Dispatch (stltoday.com).
5 minute microwave berry cobbler
Ingredients: 3/4 cups strawberries | 1/4 cup powdered sugar | 1/3 c flour | 1 tbsp sugar | 1/2 tbsp baking powder | 1 tbsp butter | 2 tbsp milk
1. Chop berries and add to a mug. Add powdered sugar and stir to combine. 2. In a separate bowl, add flour, sugar, and baking powder; mix to combine. Add the butter and rub it in with your fingers until combined. Add the milk and stir.
