WELCOME CLASS OF 2021 Hey, Wildcats! I hope you’re ready for the best four years of your lives. Life at UK never slows down and the following pages will introduce you to some of the fun things around campus and the awesome city of Lexington. My advice to you is to say yes to stepping out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s dancing for 24 straight hours or attending a sporting event you’ve never been to, all of your experiences at the University of Kentucky will be memories you’ll never forget. Your time will fly by, so take it in, have fun, and remember there’s no such thing as too much Graeter’s ice cream! Blair Johnson Editor in Chief, Inside UK

Hello Wildcats! I’m excited to welcome you to the University of Kentucky this fall. Get ready, because the next four years will fly by. I want to encourage each of you to take advantage of your time here and enjoy every class, friendship, and opportunity that you encounter. As you acclimate to your new home, you will surely receive mountains of advice on classes to take, places to eat, and sites to see. I want to add three brief pieces of advice that will, without doubt, add depth and value to your college experience. These three things have been instrumental in making my UK experience a memorable one. First, get involved! I cannot stress enough how important this is - it has transformed my college career and subsequently my life. Whatever your passions and interests, there will be opportunities to pursue them. With over 500 student organizations, numerous research opportunities, and continual campus programming there is something for everyone. Not only will this give you a better idea of what you will pursue post-graduation, it will plug you into a support network with resources that will allow you to thrive. Second, be each other’s keeper. As a Wildcat, we each have a responsibility to look out for one another and lend a helping hand when needed. The mutual support that our students share with each other is one of the best parts about our UK community. I’m excited for each of you to experience and partake in it firsthand. Finally, I want to encourage you to give back to the campus and to our Lexington community. This can take shape in a variety of ways depending on your own interests. You can, for example, participate in established philanthropies through the Center for Community Outreach, Greek Organizations, and DanceBlue (just to name a few). But I urge you to not stop there! Let this idea of giving back seep into your everyday words and actions. I can promise you this—you will gain much more by serving and giving than by receiving. So be generous of yourself! With all of that being said, don’t forget to have fun. Go to all the athletics events you can, experience the sites and restaurants that Lexington has to offer, and stay up way too late hanging out with your friends. Enjoy your time here and all the wonderful people that call this campus home. I look forward to meeting you during the coming year and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever need anything. Ben Childress SGA President

Leadership Development Program By McKenna Horsley | Photos provided by Ben Childress
During summer orientation, the number of student activities the university offers can seem overwhelming. If there was only a way to try out several groups at the same time and see which ones you liked best. There actually is. The Student Government Association facilitates the Leadership Development Program for incoming freshmen. LDP was created in 2011 to foster the next group of student leaders early in their college careers. To be involved in LDP, students must apply in September and will be a part of the program for the rest of the year. Representatives from multiple organizations choose the applicants. If accepted, LDP freshmen will take part in a shadowing program with student organizations like the Student Activities Board, SGA, DanceBlue, WRFL, Leadership Exchange, Center for Community Outreach and the Kentucky Kernel. One of last year’s 40 LDP students, Nickie Cashdollar, said the program made her transition to college smoother. The biggest advantage for her getting to know upperclassmen on campus and make connections with her own peers. “It’s really all about helping people we already know are leaders find where they might fit on campus,” she said. Last spring, Cashdollar shadowed SGA Chief of Staff Elizabeth Foster during Cashdollar’s time in the LDP. Cashdollar said she learned more about what SGA had to offer and what Foster did from day to day during the experience. Cashdollar said when shadowing, students meet with their chosen organization for about an hour each week. In addition to the shadowing program, students met with officials in UK’s administration such as UK President Eli Capilouto, completed service projects and learned about their own strengths. LDP worked with Warm Up America, an organization that gathers blankets to donate to the homeless, LDP’s website said. The program also had a resume workshop with the Stuckert Career Center and a networking dinner with the UK Alumni Association, the website said.
Read more about LDP at uksga.org
Cashdollar said at their bi-weekly meetings, LDP would take part in leadership and team-building activities. Former Student Government Vice President Ben Childress said the program was created to connect students with each other, get students interested in being leaders into the right community and link students to the university and Lexington.
“I really think in the last couple of years, we have really tried to emphasize what right now seems to be the leadership problems, working with people that are different than you and sympathizing with people,” Childress said. Cashdollar said Childress invited several guests to meet the LDP, such as Lexington Mayor Jim Gray and Congressman Andy Barr. LDP also visited iconic Lexington places like Keeneland and the Ashland Estate, home of Henry Clay. Childress said the only requirements to apply for LDP are to be a freshman and want to be a leader. “That [being a leader] doesn’t have to mean you have to be the head of an organization or doing something that looks quote-onquote really impressive on paper, but it means that do you just want to be someone that works in a community and tries to make that community better,” Childress said.

By Becky Faulconer Need help or tutoring for a certain class? Visit The Study to get help immediately. The Study is a free tutoring program located on campus and is available to all students. There’s no need to schedule an appointment — tutoring sessions are all drop-ins and students are welcome to come whenever their desired course is offering tutoring. Not only is the tutoring free, but there are two locations on campus which makes it easy for students to visit, regardless of where they live. The Study South is located in the Complex Commons building and the Study North is in Jewell hall. The South’s operating hours are Monday
The Study South is located in the Complex Commons building and the Study North is in Jewell hall. through Thursday 2-10 p.m. The North’s hours are Monday- Thursday 2-10 p.m. and Sundays 4-10 pm. The Study is closed on Fridays and Saturdays. The tutors at The Study are all undergraduate students who have passed the course they are tutoring, and are well versed on the topic. If your professor or TA has a different teaching style that contradicts your learning style, getting help from The Study could be very beneficial.
This is also a great opportunity to meet people who could possibly be in your class that you haven’t met before. You can form study groups and have someone to contact outside of class for any number of reasons. It is recommended for students to go visit The Study throughout the semester and not just the days leading up to an exam. Students are expected to bring the materials that they will need to do the work (laptop, notebook, assignments, textbook, etc.) they want help with. For a list of classes that are offered at The Study or for more information, please visit www.uky.edu/AE/home.

Couples’ Counseling
14 | Inside UK 2017
Going to college is a wonderful experience, but it does come with some stressful moments. If you are ever feeling overwhelmed or exhausted, a trip to UK’s Counseling Center could be just the remedy. Located in 106 Frazee Hall, the Counseling Center provides free counseling sessions for all UK students. The center has licensed psychologists, counselors and graduate interns that see students for treatment. In addition to individual sessions, students can sign up for group therapy that covers topics such as anxiety, OCD, sexuality and more. Also, the center offers couples’ counseling if one person in the couple is a UK student. Dr. Felito Aldarondo, associate director of the Counseling Center, said that he wanted students to know that it is a resource there to help them. “We want folks to be successful here in college and in life, so if there is some issue that they have struggled with, even if it is not at a crisis point, it’s a good time to work on it,” Aldarondo said. Aldrando said the center works closely with the Behavioral Health department in University Student Health. One reason for this is that the center cannot prescribe medication. Also, both groups have many patients in common. The Counseling Center does a lot of outreach programs on campus. One such program is Let’s Talk. Students can meet with some of the clinicians in places such as The 90 and the Study North during certain hours. No appointment is necessary for these visits. In addition to Let’s Talk, the center holds workshops for campus organizations and classes on test anxiety or career-decision making, according to their website. The Counseling Center will often visit UK 101 classes during the semester. One of the people available to talk to during Let’s Talk is Dr. Matt Ashton. Ashton said the center tried to broaden the types and numbers of services it offered UK students so people could get what they really need. Ashton said any student thinking about visiting the center should come in.

Be a part of campus life Whether you’re an out-of-state student or just used to bearing the weather for the short walk to cars and buses after school, it is common to come to college poorly equipped for the changing seasons. Here at UK, there are several different items (shoes, especially) you’ll need to survive the volatile Mideast weather. Below is a quick list of some weather fashion basics all freshmen should consider, according to the season they’ll be most useful.
Lexington summers are a force to be reckoned with. When walking across campus from class to class, comfort becomes the most important part of your outfit. Ditch the platform sandals and come prepared for the heated battle with a pair of Chacos or Keds instead. It’s also a great idea to bring sunglasses and baseball caps, in order to protect your face and eyes from the sun rays.
Scarves, scarves and more scarves. Fall in Lex is beautiful and provides the best weather for dressing cute and comfortable. Layering is key, so make sure to bring sweaters and a light jacket to campus. There will be unexpected rainy days, too, so a windbreaker is a deal-breaker on certain days. Make sure to get a pair of rain boots, as well; don’t sacrifice your suede!
Winter is probably the harshest season to experience here in Kentucky. In preparation, make sure to come equipped with all the winter gear. A big coat, lined boots (ducks boots, especially), gloves and a winter hat are big necessities. There’s no way to brave the POT (Patterson Office Tower) and Whitehall “wind tunnel” without them.
April showers bring May flowers. Well, usually. Springtime in the Bluegrass is a turbulent combination of the other three seasons. There will be sunny days, stormy days and days that make students wonder if UK will ever see the sun again. An umbrella will be your best friend, and those rain boots will definitely come in handy again. As long as you have something for everything, this season will be no challenge at all. There’s what you need to be a safe, warm, dry, happy Wildcat on campus. Welcome to Kentucky! Go Cats! 18 | Inside UK 2017
2017 brings a whole new wave of fun activities to students. Check out the classic events, as well as new ones planned for the year.
Participants throw water balloons at the CSF water balloon fight at Johnson Center field. KENTUCKY KERNEL FILE PHOTO The first thing that should be on every student’s to-do list is to visit the UK art museum. Entry is always free and its easy to swing by even in-between classes. The museum switches out exhibits consistently through the year. Along with the art museum, the Singletary Center frequently has different concerts, such as free jazz concerts, and guest celebrities who come to speak. Last semester, we had comedian John Mulaney as well Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis come and speak at an event. These events are typically free or have a very low price for UK students. Another great event is the weekly movies that are played at Memorial Hall. Each week, a different movie is played and all students are welcome to come, watch a great movie, and unwind. One of the most well-known activities at the University of Kentucky during the fall semester is the annual “World’s Largest Water Balloon Fight” hosted by Christian Student Fellowship at the end of K week. This event is open to all UK students. Just bring your student ID and an extra set of dry clothes! The fall semester is the prime time for most sports games. The University of Kentucky is known for our great sport teams. At least once throughout their college career, students are highly encouraged to visit a football game and a basketball game. Every fall, thousands of students get together and tailgate the day of a highly anticipated football game. Tickets are less expensive for students and attending the game with your friends while cheering on the Wildcats is always fun.

Taking Art To The Street Lexington has rapidly developed into a city known for its increased artistic nature. More and more architecture and buildings all over our fantastic city are adorned in murals of all shapes and sizes, colors and subject matter. These insanely unique, expressive works capture the essence of the heart of the bluegrass and can be seen all over the city, from the Bluegrass Airport to the Distillery District. A group of artists in a local organization called PRHBTN gathered in 2011 to bring art to the greater Lexington area. The artists come together to celebrate art that may be seen as criminal or marginalized. Through sponsorships from local businesses, these artists are able to annually come together and create multiple pieces of art in Lexington. Most of the pieces are within walking distance from each other and emulate an array of themes and styles of murals. Grab a friend, hop on a bike and see these great sights around our city! 28 | Inside UK 2017
