from the editors

This semester, KRNL Fashion has been working diligently to bring you the best fall looks from various Lexington vendors. As always, this issue was created and produced by motivated students here at the Kentucky Kernel. Therefore, if you are interested in anything from photography, to writing, and anything in between come by and get involved! I am so grateful and excited that you have decided to take interest in our Fall 2016 Magazine. Inside this magazine you will find an abundance of different styles, ranging from denim on denim, to leather pants with booties, down to khakis with quarter zips, and more. For this edition of KRNL fashion, I envisioned diverse looks — including streetwear, game day and class apparel, as well as a mixture of different fall styles. It is very important for us as a fashion magazine to not steer towards only one type of fashion trend, but to include as much as we can.

As we present this fall issue of KRNL, we can’t help but appreciate the diverse Kentucky fashion that has made this magazine possible. From trendy tailgaters to Distillery District club kids, these styles have created a campus full of sartorial fun and fabulousness. At our photo shoot at The Burl, the vibe was certainly everything we could ask for and more. The Distillery District has a way of making you feel ten times cooler, even if you’re not a bourbon connoisseur or a local music groupie. Perhaps my favorite spread is Fall in the Bluegrass, which perfectly embodies what it means to live in the beautiful fall season in Kentucky. Shot at Bi-Water Farm in Georgetown, this spread lets us revisit our childhoods of drinking apple cider while searching for the perfect pumpkin.

So, whether your fashion guru is Kate Middleton, Kanye West, Karl Lagerfeld, Elaine Welteroth, or someone else, I hope that there is something in this magazine that will spark your fashion forward eye!

As you flip through the pages of this magazine of which we are so proud, we hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed creating it. Every outfit, word, photograph and design feature was made possible by the creativity and appreciation of Kentucky culture that only students at UK could possess. Whether you’re a native or not, every reader will soon Fall in Love with the Bluegrass.

Celebrating the season of change Article by Jennifer Stephens

Warm hues, crisp days, Keeneland races and Caturdays are the glorious signs that fall is finally here in the Bluegrass. Whether you keep it low-key for class or dress to the nines for Keeneland, we can all admit that in Kentucky, fall is the best season for fashion. Along with pumpkins, cider and Halloween excitement, fall gives us some of the most versatile pieces that will take you from day to night, hot to cold and relaxed-grungy to trendy-chic. One of the most versatile fall staples is the classic denim jacket. With all of its variations (distressed, cropped, etc.), it’s easy to find one that expresses your style. You can wear a denim jacket to class over leggings and a tee or over a sweater with trainers, adding texture and dimension to your relaxed look. When it’s time to take it up a notch, wear it with a lace or ruffled dress. The simplicity of denim will give any dress a down-to-earth feel, and the extra layer will give you a bit of warmth on cool Kentucky days. Over-the-knee boots are also a fall favorite. Take your summer dresses, skirts and shorts into fall with a pair of these extra tall boots. Want a more casual look? Pair them with your favorite pair of skinny jeans and a floral blouse to nail one of this season’s favorite trends. To top off your fall look, hats and scarves are perfect accessories for layering. Whether you’re actually chilly or you just want that extra layer of fall fashion, these accessories can complete your whole outfit. Autumn is undoubtedly a lovely season, so let your style reflect it and fall in love with fall! 6|krnl

WHAT TO WEAR NOW

All the trends you need to know for fall Article by Sydney Nash | Photos by Hunter Mitchell

1. Mini Everything

2. En Vogue Embroidery

3. Embrace Bralettes

Gone are the days of the midi skirt. This fall, it is all about the mini. Whether you’re running errands or going out, mini skirts come in all different styles and materials. So hike up those hems, ladies. Mini skirts are back.

Needlework on apparel is chic again. From boldly intricate designs to minimalist stitching, this trend is an easy one to incorporate into your fall wardrobe.

Rejoice, ladies. Finally, a bra that is both comfortable AND cute. If you haven’t yet invested in a bralette, do it. It’ll be the buy of the year.

Tips for Styling: Tuck in a loose fitting blouse with your mini skirt for a casual day look, or dress it up with an off the shoulder shirt and a choker for a night out with friends.

Tips for Styling: Ease into this trend with an embroidered clutch, or pair an embroidered blouse with jeans and wedges for a cute and casual fall look.

Tips for Styling: Bralettes are meant to be shown off, so wear it with a casual tank or shirt with a cutout back. Or you can just lounge around in it during a lazy day at your apartment.

FALL PANTONES

Make-up trends this Fall glittery eye red eye shadow 4. Suede and Velvet This fall, fashion is all about texture. Suede is the go-to material for the season, ranging from dresses to shoes to outerwear. Velvet is back in style, as well, and acts as a dressier alternative to suede.

Tips for Styling: Pair a suede mini skirt with a long-sleeve crop top, or choose a suede dress to make a statement. For a velvet look (on a college budget, of course), invest in accessories like a velvet choker or velvet shoes.

dark lips

5. Ruffle It Up Ruffles continue to be a fashion favorite, so try to find pieces with more unconventionally placed frills to stand out. Keep the rest of your outfit simple and sleek to highlight a statement ruffle

Tips for Styling: Pair a ruffled shirt with some distressed jeans and flats for a casual lunch out with friends.

6. Layering Season Transition your summer dresses to the fall by layering them over shirts. Don’t be frightened away from the high fashion examples you see. This trend can be as tame or as bold as you want it to be.

Tips for Styling: For a simple look, pair an overall or pinafore dress with a long sleeve shirt underneath. If you want a bolder look inspired by 90s club kids, wear a spaghetti strap slip dress over a simple t-shirt.

Embracing the color of Kentucky Article by Jessica Torres

What’s Kentucky’s favorite day of the week? Good ol’ Caturday! Autumn weekends in the South are devoted to college football. Through the sun beaming and the leaves falling, you can find our Wildcats most Saturday’s of the season cheering in their best Kentucky blue. Ladies complement their blue dresses and rompers with cowboy boots, with some looks incorporating our school colors perfectly with blue and white designs. Here in Kentucky, we accessorize with pearls and wear our hair in curls. A fan favorite within tailgating fashion is large blue and white necklaces to make an outfit really pop. You cannot forget your student ID and ticket, so a cute and simple shoulder purse is perfect for holding all of your essentials. To finish the outfit, throw on a pair of aviator sunglasses and add a Wildcat face sticker on your cheek. For a more laid back look, you can’t go wrong with high-waisted jean shorts paired with a Power K letter shirt. For the chillier games, wear a cozy pair of leggings with a UK jersey layered over a black or white long sleeve shirt. Then it’s time to whip out the tall socks and boots to cheer on the Cats even in the cold. As for the fellas, you can find them wearing Kentucky blue polo shirts, khaki shorts and needlepoint UK belts. They finish off their outfits with a simple pair of Sperry’s and classic Ray Bans. Tailgaters have an undeniable look that turns typical Lexington into a sea of blue on game days. Be sure to wear your Kentucky Blue in style!

KRNL Student Profile

Garrett Goolsby Article by Jessica Torres | Photo by Hunter Mitchell

Garrett Goolsby is a junior Integrated Strategic Communication major here at the University of Kentucky. She is from Raleigh, North Carolina, where her graduating class was only 21 people. Garrett loves to read in her spare time but devotes her time on campus as the Overall Coordinator of the Homecoming Coalition. She works with other student leaders from various campus organizations to help execute their Homecoming events so that Homecoming lives up to its reputation as a great campus tradition. After graduation, she plans to move back to North Carolina and work in Marketing.

How would you describe your position as the Overall Homecoming Coordinator?

What is your favorite part or event of Homecoming? I love Paint the Town Blue! It’s when we see our theme really come to life through different organizations and their paintings on building windows around campus.

I am the Overall Coordinator of the Homecoming Coalition, which means I help plan some of the Homecoming events and activities such as Kitty Karnival, Paint the Town Blue, Banner Competition, Royalty and Wildcat Cup.

What is your favorite accessory? My pearl earrings. I wear them almost every day.

How has being involved with Homecoming impacted your experience at UK?

What is your favorite part about being a student at UK?

Before coming to UK I had little work experience, and through Homecoming I have gained so many skills that I would not have had otherwise. I meet so many new people through the Homecoming Coalition, which is the best opportunity. It has truly been a fantastic experience and I am so grateful.

I love all of the sporting events! My friends and I are diehard UK basketball fans and try to be in the front row of every game in the Erupption Zone.

How would you describe your personal style? What makes Homecoming such an important tradition on campus?

The theme this year was Going the Extra Mile. What does that mean to you?

I think Homecoming is an important campus tradition because it brings people together and unifies the campus in a fun and inclusive way.

It means so much to me. I always strive to go the extra mile, and it has been so great to talk to other people and learn how they personally go the extra mile. I have heard so many different people’s unique experiences, which is why I am so glad that it’s our theme.

16 | k r n l

I’m super casual! I like to dress up occasionally, but other than that if I want to look somewhat nice, I wear a t-shirt dress.

What is the motto or quote that you live by? Be joyful always.

A person’s choice of attire speaks a lot about their organizational skills – or lack thereof! For us young professionals, it is important to have an organization system, especially for our closet. An organized closet allows an individual to see their entire wardrobe and cuts down on time spent rushing to find a last minute outfit. If you don’t have your closet organized, how will you know what is deep down in Narnia for you to wear? Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. The Basics:

2. Style Selection:

3. Shoes:

For my personal closet organization, I like to hang my clothes first by article: outerwear, dresses and all of my tops together in their respective categories. As for the bottoms, I fold my jeans, pants, skirts and shorts in separate drawers.

Next, I sort each piece by style and color. Sweaters, and blouses are placed together and then organized by color. This way, you can see what pieces go together and even choose an outfit based on your mood.

Shoes are some of the easiest pieces to become disorganized. Having a shoe organizer or rack is essential to keeping pairs together – and keeping your sanity. Instead of having all of my shoes take up space, I rotate my shoe storage by season.

4. Outerwear: Personally, the most important section in my closet is outerwear. I have an obsession for layering clothes, which makes this section a little heavy. To start organizing this section, I begin with the weight of each – starting with vests, then windbreakers/rain jackets, cardigans, light coats, and finally parkas. After this is complete, I organize it to where each style flows from lightest to darkest within their sorted categories. Of course, not everyone is focused on their appearance, and not everyone has an outerwear obsession, but appearance nonetheless is the first thing someone notices when they see you. Whether it’s seeing all of your t-shirts that match with certain cardigans, the different ways you can layer a dress with an oversized vest, or realizing that your new wine colored shirt you bought on a whim actually does have several styling options, closet organization is key.

Lex and the City Bringing Small Town Charm to Big City Fashion Article by Sydney Nash

While Lexington is a decently sized city, it is by no means an urban jungle. No doubt, Lexington is a vibrant community with its own unique history and culture. There are many notable traditions like horse racing, bourbon distilleries and college basketball, but the culture of dress, too, is unique. Of course there is a wide range of style throughout Lexington, but it is hard to ignore the fashion at the University of Kentucky. Style on campus tends to reflect our southern roots. If you find yourself reaching for your Lilly Pulitzer dress or L.L. Bean boots most days, you are not alone. This fall, however, embrace clothing that celebrates Lexington’s metropolitan side. Look to big city streets for fashion inspiration. Instead of reaching for that Lilly dress, invest in a chic slip dress with a simple t-shirt underneath. Leave your L.L. Bean boots behind for lace-up ghillie flats. Trade floral prints for warm, neutral tones, and allow the texture of the piece to speak for itself. Skip the mall to explore locally owned stores, like Pop’s Resale, to find vintage classics. With a change of wardrobe comes a change of habit. Forego your normal stomping ground to explore Lexington’s urban side. Skip a country music festival for a concert at The Burl. Located in a newly renovated train depot in the historic downtown distillery district, The Burl is a music venue that is a perfect mix of old and new, embodying both the urban and southern roots of Lexington. This fall, don’t be afraid to try something new. Be bold with your wardrobe, and you’ll be sure to stand out.
