BOHO “INHERENTLY HIPPIE” INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, THE “BOHEMIAN” STYLE HAS BEEN WITH US SINCE THE FRENCH REVOLUTION, NOT JUST FROM THE 60’S. ALTHOUGH THIS LOOK JUST RECENTLY BECAME MORE MAINSTREAM, THE STYLE ELEMENTS HAVE NOT CHANGED IN 200 YEARS. LOOSE CLOTHES, LAYERS AND COLOR ARE THE BASIS FOR THIS TREND, WITH PERSONAL STYLE BEING THE MOST IMPORTANT ADDITION TO THE OUTFIT.

WHY FILTER THE REAL YOU?

The problem with overediting and why you should embrace your natural self BY SAM ROGERS KRNLFASHION@KYKERNEL.COM

A

s a little girl, my sister and I had a dress-up box. Inside, my mom had gathered a bunch of old clothes for us to play with. We had a few pairs of high heels, lots of hats and hair accessories, and, of course, the Cinderella skirt. With yards and yards of white tulle, it was easy to see where we’d come up with the name for the favorite item in our collection. When I wore the skirt (which was often), I felt beautiful. It was the closest thing to magic I’d ever experienced. Fast forward 15 years. Instead of donning Cinderella skirts, we apply filters, special effects and other over-the-top editing techniques (thanks to the ever-handy photo editing applications) to our photos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to look and feel “beautiful.” A simple search for “photo editor” in the App Store generates 7,876 results. There’s Visage Lab, the “professional beauty laboratory” for all of your photo editing needs.

This app also allows users to blur any acne, add eye makeup and whiten one’s teeth. “Fully automatic face retouch” is also an option. For $4.99, users can unlock even more features with Visage Lab PRO. “If everybody enhanced their portraits with ‘Visage Lab PRO HD,’ how beautiful the web world could be,” reads the description page. Then, there’s Photo Plastic, the virtual surgery simulator and surgeon editor, which allows users to “reshape and simulate realistic plastic surgeries.” The description of the app also includes a disclaimer, encouraging users to consult a doctor before considering such a procedure. Afterlight is another popular photo editing application, advertising 15 adjustment tools to “enhance your images to perfection with ease.” There are also 27 fully-adjustable original filters, 14 guest filters and 18 seasons filters. Faded (which was featured in ‘Best New Apps’ by Apple) boasts 46 free filters, 12 professional, custom adjustments, as well as special effects, from color-bursting gradients to light leaks. “Professional photographers can’t live without it.

Why have we allowed our beauty standards to be dictated (and thus distorted) by smartphone applications?

We believe in celebrating the beauty that is uniquely you. Amateurs can’t believe how easy it is to look like a pro,” reads the app’s description. My question is this: why have we allowed our beauty standards to be dictated (and thus distorted) by smartphone applications? “It’s very misleading. It’s like they look completely different,” said Elizabeth Gabbert, a junior journalism major. “Also, I can always tell.” “I don’t get why people want to degrade themselves,” she said. Claire Collett, a sophomore civil engineering major, has seen a lot of over-edited photos. “I’ve seen girls post pictures in bikinis and use apps to make themselves seem slimmer,” she said. “I’ve seen girls, and even moms, use apps to put on fake eyelashes, even skin tone, etc.” “I think editing pictures shows that you’re insecure.” Liz Samuel, a senior elementary education major, says her sister won’t let her post edited photos. “She’ll look at a photo and say ‘Liz, bricks don’t bend like that.’ So, I just don’t post edited photos anymore.” If you’re reading this story, you have already seen a few of the photos from our fall fashion shoot. Fun fact: none of the photos were digitally altered to improve the appearances of our models. We believe in celebrating the beauty that is uniquely you. For me, that means rocking bright red lipstick, no matter what day of the week it is. For others, it’s a pair of comfy sweatpants and a messy top knot. As a kid, it meant twirling around my living room wearing the Cinderella skirt. But, it shouldn’t mean altering your appearance in order to fit a set of unwritten, unattainable beauty standards. Be the beauty that is uniquely you.

STUDENT PROFILE: JESS ETTERMAN A senior marketing major and international business minor, Jess is originally from California. At UK, she’s a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and Alpha Kappa Psi, the co-ed professional business fraternity on campus. Jess also likes to travel; she studied abroad in Brazil for three weeks during the FIFA World Cup and spent last fall semester in Prague, Czech Republic. Oh, and Jess has been riding horses for 17 years. She also says she would have started earlier if a barn would have let her. When she graduates, Jess hopes to work in the equine business industry, or maybe even event planning and marketing.

W

How would you describe your personal style? I would say that I have a more classic and preppy style. I have also been very into stripes for a while, so I usually have a couple of striped dresses and tops on hand the majority of the time. I also really like a good jacket or blazer. I feel like those are always good items to have in your closet, because they can be really versatile.

hat is it like coming from California to Lexington, the “horse capital of the world”? Are we actually horse-crazy? I have really enjoyed my time in Lexington, even though it is far from home. I was really lucky when I came to UK; two of my really good friends came here that same year, so transitioning was much easier. In terms of the horse world, coming here was really cool. Lexington hosts some of the most prestigious events in the equestrian world, such as the World Equestrian Games, the USHJA Hunter Derby, Rolex, the Breeder’s Cup and many more. People in Lexington seem to be more interested in the horse industry, maybe because there are huge farms all around Kentucky and horses have become a big part of the culture in Lexington. What’s one thing you wish students at UK knew about horses, in general? I hope that people recognize horseback riding as a sport. It is not in the usual group of sports that people think of, but it really does require a lot of athleticism from the horse and rider.

32 |

What do you typically wear to ride horses? When I go to ride, I wear riding breeches, my tall boots, usually a polo shirt or a light long sleeve sun shirt, belt, gloves and a helmet. Sun shirts have become really popular in the last few years, because they help protect you from the sun and they keep you a little bit cooler than a regular t-shirt or polo would. They are great for when you are outside at the barn or a horse show all day!

Equestrian sports require precision and consistency to be successful, because horses can be unpredictable and you have to be ready to handle whatever they may do. I think it gets overlooked, but it is a great sport to watch and once you get into it and understand it, you really start to see the athleticism of the horse and rider.

What are your top three style basics? One of my style basics is to find clothes that fit really well. I am not very tall, which can sometimes be challenging when shopping, but I would rather wait and buy something that fits really well than just buy the first thing I find. I also get a lot of things tailored or hemmed, which is a great way to make something that I find fit better. Also, a good pair of dark jeans. They can be really versatile and you can dress them up a little bit or just wear them casually. What is your go-to outfit for Keeneland season? Usually when I go to Keeneland, I wear a dress and wedges. One of my go-to outfits is a black and white-striped dress that has a mesh racerback. I wear this dress to a lot of other things,

too. It can be dressed up with a blazer for something business casual or just casual by itself or with a sweater. What is the fashion trend you like the most? Why? Two of the trends that I like are ankle booties and I have really been into leather jackets. I have a tan leather jacket that I have had for years that I love and wear all the time. It’s great for the fall or dressing an outfit up. What are five things you can’t live without? My phone, Mexican food, Uber/Lyft, Netflix and animals in my life. Who would you invite, dead or alive, to a dinner party? Why? I would invite Jimmy Fallon, because I love watching The Tonight Show with him hosting it and he is really funny. What’s your most treasured possession and why? I don’t know that I have just one treasured possession, but I do like to keep ribbons and medals from competitions, whether it was from a horse show or a cross-country running race. What’s your favorite quote? “There is nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse” -- Winston Churchill
