20th Anniversary Celebration Concert! Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra Denis Matsuev, piano Friday, January 30 at 8 pm In the winter of 1994, conductor Valery Gergiev and his friend Alexander Slobodanynik entered the boarded-up, run-down Community Theatre. Gergiev stepped onto the dilapidated stage, snapped his fingers, listened to the acoustics and proclaimed, “The Kirov with play here!” On September 29, 1994, after a massive cleanup effort by hundreds of volunteers, Gergiev and the Kirov opened the newly created Community Theatre performance hall. It was a night to remember.
