A Welcome From Our President and Chairman of the Board

Welcome to Mayo Performing Arts Center as we celebrate our 30th anniversary season!

Three decades ago, a group of dedicated volunteers attempted to take a boarded up, run-down movie theatre and make a go of it as a concert venue. The odds were stacked against success. Previous attempts had failed. And the building was in no condition to operate as a concert hall.

It was said it would take a miracle. But where once mushrooms sprouted from the floor, grew a dream. And through determination and inspiration, renovation and innovation, sprang a miracle that arose as a community preserved its cultural crown jewel.

Today, that tattered building has become home to one of the leading arts organizations in the country, hosting over 200 events, with attendance of over 240,000 annually. Through good times and challenging times, MPAC has been where our community has turned to find respite and joy through a celebration of the arts.

We would like to thank each and every one of you for supporting our organization over the past thirty years. It is with deep appreciation that we reflect on the millions of people who have walked through our doors over that time to enjoy, partake in and be inspired by the arts.

MPAC’s future is bright – we have exciting and ambitious plans ahead. Thank you so much for being part of making our venue the heart of arts and entertainment in the region – this year and for the past 30 years. Enjoy the show!

Allison Larena President & CEO
Gregory J. Supron Chairman,

The 2024-2025 season marks the 30th anniversary of Mayo Performing Arts Center. Originally built as Morristownʼs premier movie theater in 1937 and called The Community Theatre, MPAC (renamed in 2009) was saved from the wrecking ball in 1994 by a group of community volunteers who envisioned a vibrant arts center.

Much has changed since then! Today, MPAC remains Morristownʼs crown jewel, and has evolved into a world-renowned performing arts center. Tony Bennett, Ringo Starr, Jerry Seinfeld, Gladys Knight, and many more of the worldʼs best known performers have graced the stage. It is the Morris County home to the New Jersey Symphony and New Jersey Ballet, and over the years has provided space for many other New Jersey-based arts organizations.

The Miracle on South Street

Celebrating 30 years!

Beyond main stage performances, MPACʼs education and community engagement programs provide arts experiences for children and adults in our region through free programs, ticketed events and tuition-based classes. MPAC education initiatives, which include our performing arts school, student recognition programs, in-theatre field trips, family shows, residency programs and The Miracle Project, an arts program for children with autism and other specific needs, touch the lives of over 27,000 children and families annually.

HONORING THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MAYO PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

HON. MIKIE SHERRILL OF NEW JERSEY

Friday, August 16, 2024

Mister Speaker, I rise today to recognize the 30th anniversary of the Mayo Performing Arts Center (MPAC) in appreciation of its importance to New Jersey’s Eleventh Congressional District as a center of entertainment and arts education.

MPAC has its origins in the Community Theater, the first first-run movie theater in Morristown, which opened in the 1930s but eventually fell into disrepair. In 1994, the Theater reopened as a performing arts center, sparking a 30 year journey leading to the MPAC we know today. None of this would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of countless staff members, volunteers and philanthropists. MPAC has grown to offer over 200 performances a year to close to 200,000 patrons. Their events and educational programs not only enrich the community with vibrant music and culture, but have an $18 million impact on the local economy. MPAC is truly a cultural cornerstone and key economic driver for Northern New Jersey.

MPAC’s programs strive to ensure the arts are an integral part of everyone’s life by making music, culture, and dance accessible to all.

Their educational programs have grown exponentially to touch over 40,000 children and their families each year of all ages and abilities, opening the world for these students while introducing the creative spark and mental health benefits of the arts. I am especially thankful for MPAC’s groundbreaking Miracle Project which brings the communication, social and confidence building skills learned through performance arts education to children and young adults with autism and other special needs.

Whether it is through large scale entertainment events, civic conversations, free community engagement initiatives, or their extensive educational programming, it is clear that MPAC provides a critical forum to immerse ourselves in the arts and open our minds to new cultural experiences. In this 30th anniversary year, I am grateful for all they have done to support New Jersey artists, our community and our local economy. I am excited to see their continued impact on the performing arts across New Jersey!

Terry Fator’s long journey from the plains of Corsicana, Texas to the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip was not without its challenges. Certainly, he had some help along the way, thanks to the millions of fans who named him winner of the hit NBC series, America’s Got Talent. After two decades on the road performing at countless kids’ birthday parties, county fairs and oddball venues, Terry thought his lifelong dream of appearing on the Vegas stage might never come true. When he finally got the chance to audition for AGT in that show’s second season, Terry was determined to take advantage, and brought all his talents to bear in taking home the $1 million first prize and the title of “Best New Act in America.”

“It was the big break I had worked for my entire life,” Terry recalls. Shortly thereafter he began performing to sellout crowds at the Las Vegas Hilton, and by the following year he signed what has been described as “one of the largest entertainment deals in Las Vegas history,” the chance to headline his own show. “Terry Fator: The VOICE of Entertainment,” at The Mirage Hotel & Casino, ran for a recordbreaking 11 years, earning Terry raves and numerous local awards including Las Vegas’ Best Show, Best Impressionist, Best AllAround Performer, Best Family Show and Best Overall Show.

Terry is among the world’s most gifted and accomplished ventriloquists, but his talents go far beyond that unique skill. He is a firstrate comedian as well as a world-class singer and mimic, able to perform in more than 200 unique celebrity voices. His vocal repertoire includes: Elton John, Garth Brooks, Karen Carpenter, Justin Timberlake, Elvis, Sammy Davis, Jr., David Bowie, Meghan Trainor and Bruno Mars. Onstage he brings to life a hilarious and diverse cast of puppet characters that includes: Winston the Impersonating Turtle; Maynard, the World’s Greatest Elvis Impersonator; Elton John; Vicki the Cougar; and Duggie, the annoying neighbor.

In March of 2021 Terry launched, “Terry Fator: Who’s the Dummy Now?” at New York-New York Hotel & Casino. “Needless to say, 2020 has been challenging for so many people. I was thrilled to be asked by my friends at MGM to be among the first performers to launch a new show while the town is recovering from the pandemic year.”

Terry latest production, “Terry Fator: One Man, a Hundred Voices, a Thousand Laughs” premiered at his new home at The STRAT Hotel, Casino & Tower in May 2024.

“It has been a privilege to call Las Vegas home for nearly 17 years and to bring so many voices to life every night on stage for my incredible audiences,” said Fator. “I’ve been blessed by millions of fans who have been with me on my journey, and, with the support of our Co-Producer SPI Entertainment, I couldn’t be more excited to start this new chapter at The STRAT where literally, the sky’s the limit.”

Terry’s talents have been showcased in several other media as well. He has appeared on dozens of television shows, including the iconic Showtime at the Apollo (where he received a standing ovation). He produced and starred in three bestselling DVDs. And he wrote a frank and candid autobiography, Who’s the Dummy Now, that chronicles the early struggles that helped form the foundation for his later successes. Terry has a number of new projects in the works as well.

While Las Vegas has become home for Terry and his wife, Angie, the couple spends a great deal of time on the road as well. His touring life has taken him to nearly every state in America over the past decade. “We’ve had such great experiences seeing this country and the world in this way. We fill our days with wonderful meals, tours and experiences. And at night I get the chance to sing and play onstage!” Terry and Angie’s favorite destination might be Walt Disney World in Orlando. “It’s where we go to recharge our batteries,” he says.

In addition to Terry’s creative endeavors, he contributes considerable time and resources to his charitable endeavors through the Terry Fator Foundation. While he has supported many causes over the years, his most passionate advocacy is reserved for America’s veterans. “Veterans hold a special place in my heart,” Terry notes. “I want to honor their service and sacrifice as often as I can.”

At his core, though, Terry is a performer. “I just always want to entertain. That’s it. I never had fans before and now that I do I just want to keep them smiling and laughing,” he notes. “I didn’t see success until I was in my 40s, and I’m determined to make up for all that lost time.”
