Program Book 2
I am filled with joy to welcome you to our theatre for Mayo Performing Arts Center’s 28th season. The past several years have been challenging for all of us, but MPAC continues to rebound and return to the full slate of world class performances, engaging education classes and diverse outreach concerts that you have come to expect.
We believe that MPAC is the heart of arts and entertainment in our region – it’s where our community comes together to share a mutual love of the arts. If there’s one thing that we’ve learned during the past few years, it is just how vital and necessary the arts are to refresh and renew our spirit.
We often talk about the memorable performances on our stage, but every person who comes through our doors has their own special experience to share. This season promises to be full of great new stories to tell and memories to create. MPAC strives to make every event here a joyful one for every person who walks through our doors.
This year, I celebrate my 20th season with this amazing organization. I want to thank our Board of Trustees, dedicated staff, wonderful volunteers, generous donors and loyal patrons who have helped the theatre flourish over the past two decades. It continues to be an incredible journey.
Let’s get on with the show! Enjoy the performance!
Allison Larena President & CEOIt is my pleasure to welcome you to Mayo Performing Arts Center.
As the arts industry continues to recover from two very tough years, MPAC is adroitly adapting to the post-COVID environment. MPAC continues to strengthen its leadership position as the model performing arts organization to which other venues aspire.
It will take additional time for MPAC to fully recover from the impact of the pandemic, but we are on a very positive trajectory thanks in no small part to your support. I’m grateful to our dedicated members who continue to stand by us, because they believe our mission is more vital than ever.
We hope that you will consider supporting MPAC as we fill our stage with exciting concerts, expand empowering educational offerings to thousands of school age children and grow our diverse arts programs. We are your community resource to connect you, your family, friends and neighbors with the joy of experiencing and participating in the arts.
Thank you again for your support. I look forward to seeing you at MPAC.
Sincerely,

There are few artists whose names are synonymous with one instrument and how itʼs played in service to an entire genre.
Utter the phrase “young blues rock guitarist” within earshot of anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the modern musical vanguard and the first name they are most likely to respond with will be Kenny Wayne Shepherd. The Louisiana born axeman and songsmith has sold millions of albums while throwing singles into the Top 10, shining a light on the rich blues of the past and forging ahead with his own modern twist on a classic sound he has embodied since his teens.
In a 20-year recording career that began when he was just 16, Shepherd has established himself as an immensely popular recording artist, a consistently indemand live act and an influential force in a worldwide resurgence of interest in the blues.
From television performances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (amongst others) to features in Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Maxim Magazine, Blender, Spin, USA Today and more, his musical career has been nothing short of phenomenal.
On spawned the radio hits “In 2 Deep,” “Shotgun Blues” and “Last Goodbye.”
2004ʼs The Place Youʼre In was a blistering rock record and was followed up by 2007ʼs ambitious 10 Days Out: Blues from the Backroads, for which Shepherd and his band traveled throughout the American South to record with such vintage blues greats as B.B. King, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins and David “Honeyboy” Edwards on their home turf. 2010 saw the release of Shepherdʼs long-awaited first live album, Live! In Chicago, recorded at Chicagoʼs House of Blues during the allstar Legends tour and featuring guest appearances by such blues legends as Hubert Sumlin and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith. The live disc debuted at #1 on Billboardʼs Blues chart, as did 2011ʼs How I Go. In 2013, Shepherd further expanded his musical horizons by teaming with veteran rockers Stephen Stills and Barry Goldberg to form THE RIDES, whose first album Canʼt Get Enough helped to expand Shepherdʼs audience as well as his musical resume. 2014 saw the release of Goinʼ Home, Shepherdʼs sixth #1 debut on the Billboard Blues charts. Goinʼ Home features several talented friends who shared Shepherdʼs enthusiasm for the projectʼs back-to-basics ethos. Those guests include fellow guitar icons Joe Walsh, Warren Haynes, Kebʼ Moʼ and Robert Randolph, longtime friend Ringo Starr, Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson, the Rebirth Brass Band and co-producer Bladeʼs father, Pastor Brady
1999ʼs Live
At 16 years old, he signed his first record deal and burst onto the national scene with the release of his 1995 debut album Ledbetter Heights, which produced the radio hits “Deja Voodoo,” “Born with a Broken Heart” and “Shame, Shame, Shame.” His relentless touring and success on rock radio helped to drive the album to Platinum sales status. His 1998 sophomore effort Trouble Is... also went Platinum, yielding such radio hits as “Blue on Black,” “True Lies” and “Somehow, Somewhere, Someway.”
Blade Sr., who lends a bracing dose of preaching to Shepherdʼs version of Bo Diddleyʼs “You Canʼt Judge a Book by the Cover.” In the months since its release, Shepherd and his band have toured the world extensively blazing a fresh trail for the historical American art form in the 21st Century.

Leslie Odom, Jr. is a multifaceted, awardwinning vocalist, songwriter, author, and actor. With a career that spans all performance genres, he has received recognition with Tony and Grammy Awards as well as multiple Emmy and Academy Award nominations for his excellence and achievements in Broadway, television, film, and music. Most recently, Odom starred in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, streaming worldwide on Netflix. In December 2022, the film debuted as Netflix’s #1 movie in its premiere week and has already secured its position as the #5 most popular movie of all time on the platform. Odom is currently in production on the highly anticipated sequel to the original iconic film The Exorcist. The film is scheduled to be released in October 2023.
In 2020, Odom starred in and performed the songs of legendary singer Sam Cooke in the critically acclaimed Amazon film adaptation of One Night in Miami…, directed by Regina King. His portrayal of the soul icon was met with widespread praise and critical acclaim, earning him nominations for an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Criticsʼ Choice Award, Golden Globe Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards, among others. King also enlisted Odom to write, compose, and perform the film’s original song, “Speak Now,” for which he was nominated for an Oscar and has since earned him a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Song as well as several other award nominations.
Odom recently starred in The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel to David Chase’s Awardwinning HBO series The Sopranos that was released in theaters and on HBO Max in October 2021. He can also be heard voicing the character of Owen Tillerman in Season 3 of the Apple TV+ animated musical-comedy series Central Park, for which he received a 2020 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance. In September 2021, Odom hosted “The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back!” on CBS, earning his third Emmy nomination for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) in 2022. Throughout the live 2-hour special event, he performed various musical numbers
with David Byrne, John Legend, Audra McDonald, and many others. Additional film and television credits include the Disney+ filmed musical performance of the original Broadway production of Hamilton (2021 Emmy nomination, Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie), the limited series Love in the Time of Corona, which he executive produced and costarred opposite Nicolette Robinson, Abbott Elementary, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder on Disney+, Harriet, Murder on the Orient Express, Only, Red Tails, Smash and many more.
Well known for his breakout role as the original Aaron Burr in the smash hit Broadway musical Hamilton, Odom won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical and a Grammy Award for his performance as a principal soloist on the original cast recording. He made his Broadway debut in RENT at the age of 17. He also starred opposite LinManuel Miranda and Karen Olivo in a 2014 City Center Encores! revival of Jonathan Larson’s Tick, Tick…Boom! In December 2017, Odom returned to the New York City stage in a solo concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The cabaret-style performance was crafted around signature songs and music that shaped this artist's journey, all performed with a world-class band in front of a live audience. The show was filmed for broadcast as an hour-long PBS special as part of the 17time Emmy Award-winning series, Live from Lincoln Center, and premiered in April 2018.
A Grammy Award-winning recording artist, Odom’s self-titled debut album was partfunded by a successful Kickstarter campaign and released in 2014 by Borderlight Entertainment, Inc. His new label home, S-Curve, re-released an expanded version with additional material in June 2016, and the album reached #1 on the Billboard Jazz charts and charted in the Billboard Top 200. In winter 2017, Odom topped the charts once again with the re-release of his second album and first holiday album, Simply Christmas, as a deluxe edition with new arrangements and new songs. Simply Christmas hit #1 on iTunes and the Billboard Jazz charts, #4 on the Billboard Holiday chart, and #31 on the
Billboard Top 200 chart. Odom released his third full-length album and first of original material, Mr, in November 2019, and the following October teamed up with nine-time Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum artist Sia to debut a new version of standout track “Cold.” His critically acclaimed second holiday album, The Christmas Album, was released in November 2020. He has performed at the White House, Super Bowl, Oscars, Grammys, and on hallowed stages such as Lincoln Center, Rockefeller Center, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
In March 2018, Odom added the title of author to his resume with the release of his book – Failing Up: How to Take Risks, Aim
Higher and Never Stop Learning. Written in the style of a commencement speech, the book brings together what Odom has learned in life so far, tapping into universal themes of starting something new, following your passions, discovering your own potential, and surrounding yourself with the right people. Failing Up is about unlocking your true potential and making your dreams come true even when it seems impossible. The book was published by Feiwel & Friends, an imprint of Macmillan Publishers. Co-written with Nicolette Robinson, Odom’s first children’s book, I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know, will be published by Feiwel & Friends on March 28, 2023. April

The fans are simply incredible, I owe it all to God and the legacy of the man himself!”
