A Welcome From Our President and Chairman of the Board

Welcome to Mayo Performing Arts Center! It is our privilege to provide you, your family and friends with a joyful and memorable experience.

For 29 years, MPAC has been at the heart of arts and entertainment in the North Jersey region, providing world-class performances, engaging arts education opportunities, thought-provoking visual art, and free community events to over 200,000 adults and children every year.

MPAC is where our community comes together to share in arts experiences that entertain, uplift and inspire. Our dedicated team of professionals and volunteers is committed to making your MPAC experience exceptional, from the moment you purchase a ticket to when you exit our venue having just enjoyed an outstanding performance. We always strive to deliver moments of awe to make your MPAC experience stand out.

That MPAC experience extends beyond the performances you see on our stage. It is the excitement of children who participate in our Performing Arts School, the wonder of students who come here for field trips, the happiness of those young and old of diverse backgrounds who participate in creating arts around town and much more.

We could not offer these extensive and vital programs and services without the support of our dedicated community of patrons, donors and funders. We hope that you will help us continue the “MPAC Miracle” that started in 1994 by supporting our organization, and extending the joy you feel here to others as well.

Something special is about to happen on our stage. Enjoy the performance!

MAYO PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Pat Metheny: Dream Box Tour

PAT METHENY was born in Lee’s Summit, MO on August 12, 1954 into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of eight, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility – a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues. With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career, Pat Metheny has continued to redefine the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of his instrument.

Metheny’s versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. Metheny’s body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces and even the robotic instruments of his Orchestrion project, while always sidestepping the limits of any one genre.

As well as being an accomplished musician, Metheny has also participated in the academic arena as a music educator. At 18, he was the youngest teacher ever at the University of Miami. At 19, he became the youngest teacher ever at the Berklee College of Music, where he also received an honorary doctorate more than twenty years later (1996). He has also taught music workshops all over the world, from the Dutch Royal Conservatory to the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz to clinics in Asia and South

America. He has also been a true musical pioneer in the realm of electronic music, and was one of the very first jazz musicians to treat the synthesizer as a serious musical instrument. Years before the invention of MIDI technology, Metheny was using the Synclavier as a composing tool. He also has been instrumental in the development of several new kinds of guitars such as the soprano acoustic guitar, the 42-string Pikasso guitar, Ibanez’s PM series jazz guitars, and a variety of other custom instruments. It is one thing to attain popularity as a musician, but it is another to receive the kind of acclaim Metheny has garnered from critics and peers. Over the years, Metheny has won countless polls as "Best Jazz Guitarist" and awards, including three gold records for (Still Life) Talking, Letter from Home, and Secret Story. He has also won 20 Grammy Awards spread out over a variety of different categories including Best Rock Instrumental, Best Contemporary Jazz Recording, Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Instrumental Composition at one point winning seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive albums. In 2015 he was inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame, becoming only the fourth guitarist to be included (along with Django Reinhardt, Charlie Chrisitan and Wes Montgomery) and its youngest member. Metheny has spent much of his life on tour, often doing more than 100 shows a year since becoming a bandleader in the 70s. At the time of this writing, he continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike, helping them to reach their audience as well as realizing their own artistic visions.

ABOUT PILOBOLUS

Pilobolus is a rebellious dance company. Since 1971, it has tested the limits of human physicality to explore the beauty and the power of connected bodies creating awe-inspiring and accessible performances. In the five decades since, Pilobolus has continued to propel the seeds of expression through their collaborations with some of the greatest influencers, thinkers, and creators in the world and its unique educational programming. The company offers classes serving all ages and movement abilities. Pilobolus classes use movement to teach dancers and non-dancers alike to harness the creative potential of groups. Bespoke leadership workshops for corporate executives, employees, and business schools teach teams how to maximize creativity, solve problems, create surprise, and generate joy through the power of nonverbal communication. Pilobolus continues to bring the beauty of movement to the world, growing and changing each year while reaching new audiences and exploring new visual and physical planes. Learn more at pilobolus.org.

Pilobolus: Re:Creation

RENÉE JAWORSKI (Executive/Co-Artistic Director) has been an indelible force in Pilobolus’s artistic landscape since joining in 2000. A performer who captivated audiences worldwide, her magnetic stage presence laid the foundation for an expansive creative career. In 2011, she was chosen to lead Pilobolus’s post-succession evolution, becoming Artistic Director, and in 2022 became the first Executive Director with an intimate dance background. Her choreographic experience has been extensive and pioneering, crafting pieces reflecting her innovative dance and theater approach. Her exceptional work spans various platforms, from the 79th Annual Academy Awards to the Grammy®-nominated video for OK Go’s “All is Not Lost,” as well as overseeing prestigious projects like Radiolab Live: In the Dark and the World Science Festival, Time and the Creative Cosmos. The University of the Arts honored her with the Silver Star Alumni Award, and her collaborative work on Round House Theater’s production of The Tempest, directed by Aaron Posner and Teller, earned Pilobolus the Helen Hayes Award for Best Choreography in a Play in 2023. Guiding Pilobolus with vision and creativity, she ensures it remains a vibrant, celebrated arts organization.

MATT KENT (Artistic Director) joined Pilobolus in 1996 without any formal dance training. His unconventional entrance into dance and theater parallels the Founders’. In Pilobolus, he found an outlet for his artistic and creative vision and began a diverse and prolific career. He has performed on prestigious stages around the world and created choreography for colleges, professional dance companies, as well as grand productions involving shadow, horses, acrobats, large scale Michael Curry puppets, actors, stunt men, hip hop dancers, athletes, zombies, and more. His work on Shakespeare’s The Tempest codirected by Aaron Posner and Teller won the Helen Hayes Award for best choreography. He developed the movement vocabulary for The Walking Dead. His work has appeared on the Academy Awards, Conan O’Brien, Penn & Teller’s Fool Us, Wetten Dass, and multiple television commercials. As Artistic Director

of Pilobolus, he brings an unconventional approach to innovative theatrical experiences. A powerhouse of creativity, he leads the 50 plus year old Company, keeping the vintage historic works authentic and relative, while breaking new ground to create transformative experiences to engage, inspire, and leave audiences in awe.

NATHANIEL BUCHSBAUM (Dancer) Manipulator of Light and Shadow, Harnesser of Momentum, Shepherd of Saccharomyces, Student of the Ephemeral, Walker of the Prime Material plane. He is known amongst the Planeswalkers as Tragic the Blathering and is rumored to be known in the Northeast as simply… “Nate.” When he isn't wandering the realms, delighting both young and old with his nimble, scantily-clad acts of physical storytelling, he dwells in Connecticut, brewing beer in his garage under the watchful eyes of his feline familiars. Nate was absorbed into Pilobolus in 2012.

CONNOR CHAPARRO (Dancer) was born in Lakeland, Florida. He eventually found himself at the University of Memphis where he graduated with a double concentration in Dance and Dance Science. You can find him cooking his mother’s secret salsa recipe and sharing it with people in his spare time. He loves to explore nature, see people’s smiles, and learn about the crazy world we live in. This is Connor’s first season with Pilobolus and he is SO excited to be performing for you, the audience! He sends you “Mush” love.

QUINCY ELLIS (Dance Captain) began training as a gymnast and figure skater in his home state of Maine before earning his B.F.A. Acting degree from Emerson College. He has performed and taught for Theatre Raleigh, The MoveShop, DeFunes Dance, and The Neighborhood Playhouse…among others. Quincy has also danced for a variety of NYC Drag Artists, including Juicy Liu and Miz Cracker. Outside of theater, he’s an avid traveler, evolution enthusiast, and nature lover. Quincy joined Pilobolus in 2017. He does not dye his hair gray…it grows that way.

productions around the world, and now presenting repertory and artistic programing wherever possible. Additional credits include a Broadway debut in the new West Side Story, and other musicals, cruise ships, and NYC-based companies. She is originally from Miami, FL.

HANNAH KLINKMAN (Dancer) was born and raised in Dexter, Michigan where she was classically trained at Ballet Chelsea. She studied at Grand Valley State University and completed her training with BalletMet Columbus in 2016. She has since danced and created with Festival Ballet Providence, Dance The Yard, co-founded the Rhode Island Women’s Choreography Project, and toured and created new work with MOMIX. She creates costumes and her own choreography when not on the road. Hannah is a Mindfulness Meditation teacher, Pilates instructor, dance teacher, and houseplant enthusiast. Hannah joined Pilobolus in 2021.

ZACHARY WEISS (Dancer) grew up in Chapel Hill, NC and began his formal dance training at age eight. He has always been a performer whether it be playing the saxophone, singing, acting or dancing. Zack studied contemporary dance at UNC School of the Arts for a year before transferring to Swarthmore College. He graduated in 2020 with a major in Engineering and a minor in Dance. After working as a Data Engineer in DC for a year, Zack joined Pilobolus in 2021. Outside the studio, Zack can be found riding/ fixing bikes, finding high places to climb, and reading science fiction (but not all at the same time).

ROBBY BARNETT (Co-Founder, Choreographer) was born and raised in the Adirondack Mountains and attended Dartmouth College. He joined Pilobolus in 1971.

MOSES PENDLETON (Co-Founder, Choreographer) has been one of America’s most innovative and widely performed choreographers for almost 50 years. A co-

founder of the ground-breaking Pilobolus in 1971, he formed his own company, MOMIX, in 1980, which rapidly established an international reputation for inventive and illusionistic choreography. Mr. Pendleton has also worked extensively in film, TV, and opera, and as a choreographer for ballet companies and special events, including two Winter Olympics.

MICHAEL TRACY (Co-Founder, Choreographer) was born in Florence and raised in New England. He met the other Pilobolus founders at Dartmouth in 1969, and became an artistic director after graduating magna cum laude in 1973. Michael toured with Pilobolus for 14 years and choreographed and directed the company until his retirement. He has set his work on the Joffrey, Ohio, Hartford, Nancy, and Verona Ballets, and with Pilobolus choreographed a production of Mozart’s Magic Flute. Michael taught at Yale University for two decades and lives in northwestern Connecticut.

JONATHAN WOLKEN (1949-2010) (CoFounder, Choreographer) co-founded Pilobolus and remained an Artistic Director until his death, creating 46 Pilobolus works in collaboration with co-artistic directors and guest artists, and as sole choreographer. He also choreographed Glyndebourne Festival Opera’s production of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, and the Royal Danish Ballet’s Oneiric. Mr. Wolken taught many workshops and was dedicated to the furtherance of Pilobolus technique in dance and as a model for creative thinking.

DAVID POE (Composer) The music of Shadowland is streaming everywhere now. Rolling Stone writes, “David Poe gives the singer/songwriter genre a much-needed jolt.” Poe’s other solo recordings include Everyone’s Got A Camera, God & The Girl, The Late Album, Love Is Red, The Copier: Music for Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and his self-titled debut, produced by T-Bone Burnett. He has toured the world with the likes of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, served as vocalist for the Blackstar Symphony, performed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv, and at the Museum of

Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar for the World Cup. Scores for dance include work by the LA Dance Project, American Repertory Theater, and Harvard Dance Center. Songs by David Poe have featured in a variety of television and film projects, including Dexter, Nashville, Scooby-Doo, and Diary Of A Teenage Girl, and been recorded by artists of multiple genres. He is a composer fellow of the Sundance Institute. davidpoe.com

PAUL SULLIVAN (Composer) has composed fourteen scores for Pilobolus since 1980. He has appeared as a conductor, performer, and composer on and off Broadway several times. Paul currently lives on the coast of Maine where he composes music for his own record label, River Music. Paul's award-winning piano albums include Sketches of Maine, A Visit to the Rockies, Folk Art, Nights in the Gardens of Maine, and Christmas in Maine. His most recent albums are Circle ‘Round The Season and Memory Lane Collection

DAVID M. CHAPMAN (Lighting Designer) was Director of Production for Pilobolus from 1978 to 1997. David has designed the lighting for numerous Pilobolus works including Day Two, Bonsai, Particle Zoo, and Axons. Other work includes positions as assistant lighting designer for the 1978 Spoleto Festival USA and Production Manager of the 1981 American Dance Festival. Jeremy Camp

For Jeremy Camp, it all boils down to loving people well.

As a young boy growing up in smalltown Lafayette, Indiana, Jeremy’s impressionable young heart watched his parents model this behavior on a regular basis. It was not uncommon for Jeremy to accompany his father to a local prison or boys’ home to minister through words and music, and when his father started a church when Jeremy was only 14, his eyes were truly opened to the remarkable impact of pastoring and ministering. Between caring and providing for him and his siblings and his father entering full-time ministry, the importance of caring for and loving well the people put in your path was not lost on the blue-eyed boy with an affinity for music.

But like any other adolescent who grew up in the church and acquired the pastor’s kid label, Jeremy faced his own doubts, temptations and rebellion. As a teen, he found himself living a double life—partying and drinking behind his parents’ back and showing up with his halo seemingly intact on Sunday mornings. But at 16 years old, listening to a pastor at youth camp, Jeremy heard God say to him, “I want to use you, but you’re on the edge of a cliff. You’re about ready to jump off. You need to run as far away from the cliff as possible.” That day a switch flipped and Jeremy submitted his life to the Lord.

When he left home for bible college two years later, he was ready for the road that lay ahead.

After Jeremy graduated bible college and while leading worship at a bible study on campus, he spotted her—a beautiful woman with her hands raised

toward heaven. Jeremy was captivated by Melissa, totally lost in worship and oblivious to the world around her. Their relationship began as a flirtatious friendship but their connection was clear—undeniably magnetic. Caught in somewhat of a love triangle between Jeremy and the friend who introduced them, Melissa abruptly ended the two’s budding relationship. Jeremy’s heart was broken.

But when he got word that Melissa had cancer, Jeremy dropped everything and immediately drove to be by her side. After a God-ordained hospital proposal, chemo treatments during their engagement and a huge joyful wedding once she entered remission, the cancer returned.

As his wife battled cancer, Jeremy continued performing for audiences in Southern California, sharing their testimony and asking and believing for a miracle. When Melissa lost her battle in 2001, Jeremy completely lost his desire to continue making music. After meeting with a pastor who had endured much suffering of his own, Jeremy was encouraged to keep going amidst his grief and pain. Melissa’s immense and unwavering faith that her battle with cancer and ultimate death would be worth it if even only one person came to know the Lord also propelled Jeremy to continue sharing his testimony after her passing.

Jeremy was determined to keep sharing God’s faithfulness through his greatest trial, and the Lord continued to use his words and lyrics to minister, touching thousands of lives in attendance.

In 2002, Jeremy released his first nationally distributed album, Stay. While

touring to promote the album, Jeremy crossed paths with The Benjamin Gate singer Adrienne Liesching. The two got to know each other on tour, hit it off, and were married in 2003. They have since been blessed with three children, Bella, Arie, and Egan. In 2003, both a critical and commercial success, six songs from Stay reached the top of the Christian singles chart, and the first song he wrote after Melissa’s death, “I Still Believe”, went to #1.

Between 2002 and 2017, Jeremy released 11 albums, four of them RIAAcertified as Gold. He has sold nearly five million albums. His original music, a mixture of ballads and uptempo rock songs, has earned him numerous awards and nominations across the Christian and secular music industries, including five GMA Dove Awards, one Grammy nomination, three American Music Award nominations, and four ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Awards. His 2017 album, I Will Follow, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Christian Album and in the top 25 on Billboard Top 200. In 2010, Camp was named Billboard’s #2 Christian artist of the decade. In 2013, Tyndale House Publishers released Jeremy’s memoir, I Still Believe.

In early 2018, following a hard year of watching someone close to them walk through addiction, talks about turning Melissa’s story into a major motion picture with the Erwin Brothers progressed, and Jeremy began experiencing sudden and debilitating panic attacks. The trust and fear issues he faced after Melissa passed away had resurfaced, and the enemy was attacking Jeremy with everything he had.

Walking through a hopeless fog of panic, dark depression and debilitating

anxiety for about a week, with the constant companionship of and prayers from his wife Adrienne, Jeremy finally heard from the Lord: “You can trust me. Perfect love casts out fear. I love you perfectly…I want you to be free of this. I want you to know that I love you so much and that you can trust me.”

For the next six months, Jeremy spent time with the Lord, relearning and experiencing the breadth and depth of his love and surrendering the things he discovered had been holding on to. In the midst of that process, God started downloading songs into Jeremy’s heart. And Jeremy started writing—determined to be completely open and honest about his feelings and what he was learning in this hard season.

The result? Nearly 20 years after recording his first album, Jeremy released what he calls his most vulnerable, authentic music yet—The Story’s Not Over (Sept. 20, 2019). Featuring 11 songs and a new, energizing sound, the album is a reflection on one of the hardest years in Jeremy’s life; the valley he walked through, how the Lord spoke to him and carried him through it, and what’s to come in this season of newfound clarity, life and ministry—one marked by absolute surrender.

Songs like “Dead Man Walking,” the first album single released in May 2019, “Still Alive” and “Keep Me in the Moment” feature honest, soul-bearing lyrics thanking the Lord for rescuing him from the darkness, for reminders of life when he didn’t feel alive, and for showing him what matters in the midst of his trials.

Every track on the album is undeniably marked by transparency, vulnerability, surrender and complete honesty.

Jeremy Camp

The Story’s Not Over released six months prior to the Erwin Brothers’ biopic I STILL BELIEVE, and a marriage book written with Adrienne was released in 2020. Jeremy is thankful to have entered a new season of ministry on the other side of the valley, one where he feels the Lord is going to minister through him and his story like never before.

I STILL BELIEVE, which chronicles Camp’s personal story of love, loss and faith, was produced by the Erwin Brothers’ (I CAN ONLY IMAGINE), newly formed studio, Kingdom, in association with Lionsgate, and had a nationwide theatrical release in March 2020. The movie features K.J. Apa as Jeremy, Britt Robertson as

Melissa, Gary Sinese as Tom Camp, and Shania Twain as Teri Camp.

The gifts of new music, a movie and a marriage book all come on the other side of a year of tremendous hardship, pain and growth; they are the fruits of learning to really trust the Lord again, crying out to him in the midst of a dark place. Jeremy’s desire in sharing his journey—not sparing any detail or hiding any unpleasantry—is to be a minister of the gospel in its entirety. He wants his listeners to know that he goes through hardships like everybody else does. The same God that’s loved and rescued him time and again, will— and wants—to do the same for them.
