A Welcome From Our President and Chairman of the Board

Welcome to Mayo Performing Arts Center as we celebrate our 30th anniversary season!

Three decades ago, a group of dedicated volunteers attempted to take a boarded up, run-down movie theatre and make a go of it as a concert venue. The odds were stacked against success. Previous attempts had failed. And the building was in no condition to operate as a concert hall.

It was said it would take a miracle. But where once mushrooms sprouted from the floor, grew a dream. And through determination and inspiration, renovation and innovation, sprang a miracle that arose as a community preserved its cultural crown jewel.

Today, that tattered building has become home to one of the leading arts organizations in the country, hosting over 200 events, with attendance of over 240,000 annually. Through good times and challenging times, MPAC has been where our community has turned to find respite and joy through a celebration of the arts.

We would like to thank each and every one of you for supporting our organization over the past thirty years. It is with deep appreciation that we reflect on the millions of people who have walked through our doors over that time to enjoy, partake in and be inspired by the arts.

MPAC’s future is bright – we have exciting and ambitious plans ahead. Thank you so much for being part of making our venue the heart of arts and entertainment in the region – this year and for the past 30 years. Enjoy the show!

The 2024-2025 season marks the 30th anniversary of Mayo Performing Arts Center. Originally built as Morristownʼs premier movie theater in 1937 and called The Community Theatre, MPAC (renamed in 2009) was saved from the wrecking ball in 1994 by a group of community volunteers who envisioned a vibrant arts center.

Much has changed since then! Today, MPAC remains Morristownʼs crown jewel, and has evolved into a world-renowned performing arts center. Tony Bennett, Ringo Starr, Jerry Seinfeld, Gladys Knight, and many more of the worldʼs best known performers have graced the stage. It is the Morris County home to the New Jersey Symphony and New Jersey Ballet, and over the years has provided space for many other New Jersey-based arts organizations.

The Miracle on South Street

Celebrating 30 years!

Beyond main stage performances, MPACʼs education and community engagement programs provide arts experiences for children and adults in our region through free programs, ticketed events and tuition-based classes. MPAC education initiatives, which include our performing arts school, student recognition programs, in-theatre field trips, family shows, residency programs and The Miracle Project, an arts program for children with autism and other specific needs, touch the lives of over 50,000 children and families annually.

A Word of Recognition from Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill

HONORING THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MAYO PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

HON. MIKIE SHERRILL OF NEW JERSEY

Friday, August 16, 2024

Mister Speaker, I rise today to recognize the 30th anniversary of the Mayo Performing Arts Center (MPAC) in appreciation of its importance to New Jersey’s Eleventh Congressional District as a center of entertainment and arts education.

MPAC has its origins in the Community Theater, the first first-run movie theater in Morristown, which opened in the 1930s but eventually fell into disrepair. In 1994, the Theater reopened as a performing arts center, sparking a 30 year journey leading to the MPAC we know today. None of this would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of countless staff members, volunteers and philanthropists. MPAC has grown to offer over 200 performances a year to close to 200,000 patrons. Their events and educational programs not only enrich the community with vibrant music and culture, but have an $18 million impact on the local economy. MPAC is truly a cultural cornerstone and key economic driver for Northern New Jersey.

MPAC’s programs strive to ensure the arts are an integral part of everyone’s life by making music, culture, and dance accessible to all.

Their educational programs have grown exponentially to touch over 40,000 children and their families each year of all ages and abilities, opening the world for these students while introducing the creative spark and mental health benefits of the arts. I am especially thankful for MPAC’s groundbreaking Miracle Project which brings the communication, social and confidence building skills learned through performance arts education to children and young adults with autism and other special needs.

Whether it is through large scale entertainment events, civic conversations, free community engagement initiatives, or their extensive educational programming, it is clear that MPAC provides a critical forum to immerse ourselves in the arts and open our minds to new cultural experiences. In this 30th anniversary year, I am grateful for all they have done to support New Jersey artists, our community and our local economy. I am excited to see their continued impact on the performing arts across New Jersey!

The holiday tradition continues!

MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER CHRISTMAS by Chip Davis has been America’s favorite holiday tradition for more than 35 years! Grammy Award winner Chip Davis has created a show that features Mannheim Steamroller Christmas classics in the distinctive Mannheim sound. The program includes 15 musicians playing more than 20 instruments against a backdrop of dazzling multimedia effects – capturing the spirit of the season in an immersive yet intimate setting.

CHIP DAVIS

A visionary musician and businessman, Chip Davis is behind a remarkable body of work now spanning five decades. Since founding Mannheim Steamroller and American Gramaphone Records in 1974, Davis has written, arranged, and recorded over 35 albums, highlighted by the RIAA multi-platinum certified Mannheim Steamroller catalog.

The best-selling Christmas music artist in history with over 31 million Christmas albums sold, the group celebrated the 35th Anniversary of its annual holiday tour in 2019, making it the longest running tour in the entertainment industry.

Davis has achieved worldwide sales of all album titles in excess of 41 million, with four multi-platinum, eight platinum, and 19 gold certifications in the US alone. Furthermore, Davis is the entrepreneur behind the hugely successful Mannheim Steamroller product line, author of nine children’s books, an amateur astronomer, and dedicated philanthropist.

The man behind Mannheim was born Louis F. Davis, Jr. in the archetypal small town of Hamler, Ohio (Pop. 500), the son of a family to whom music and

“a sensitivity to nature” were integral. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1969 with mastery in bassoon and percussion before taking on a job at the Omaha, NE ad agency, Bozell & Jacobs. In 1974, Davis and fellow ad exec Bill Fries teamed up to create a fictional truck driver named “C.W. McCall” for a series of Clio Awardwinning commercials. A string of hit albums and top 40 singles followed, including the RIAA gold certified #1 classic, “Convoy.”

The success of C.W. McCall allowed Davis to focus on his own original music. He dubbed his new band Mannheim Steamroller – a play on the 18th-century musical technique known as the “Mannheim crescendo” – and in 1975 recorded FRESH AIRE, a landmark work melding element of classical, rock, and pop into something altogether unique. Foiled by the industry’s inability to classify a genre for the album, Davis decided to distribute and sell FRESH AIRE on his own and American Gramaphone Records was born.

Davis employed innovative marketing techniques to spread his “18th Century Classical Rock” and FRESH AIRE eventually found its way onto record store shelves everywhere, fitted with the newly created classification “New Age.” Each consecutive album in the FRESH AIRE series earned multi-million album sales, countless fans, and, with FRESH AIRE 7, the 1991 GRAMMY® Award for “Best New Age Album.”

In 1984, Davis had the idea to reinvigorate traditional carols and Yuletide staples via Mannheim Steamroller’s alwayseclectic sonic approach. MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER CHRISTMAS proved a phenomenon, the band’s first to reach the Billboard 200 album chart on its way to

6x RIAA platinum certification. A FRESH AIRE CHRISTMAS followed in 1988, achieving 6x platinum certification and ultimately surpassing its monumentally successful predecessor to be declared the sixth best-selling holiday album of the SoundScan era.

Further Christmas collections resulted in cumulative Christmas album sales in excess of 31 million. The Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Tour quickly became as much a Yuletide tradition; today two separate troupes perform across the country. Still another incarnation performs at the holiday festivities at Universal Orlando® Resort.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Davis has also introduced a hugely popular Mannheim Steamroller product line while somehow finding time to host Mannheim Steamroller's An American Christmas, a 12-hour nationally broadcast radio special heard annually on over 450 stations across the United States.

The steadfastly autonomous American Gramaphone label has released works by an array of like-minded artists. For their part, Mannheim Steamroller has observed additional holidays as Halloween and July 4th while also exploring inspirations spanning the music of Walt Disney films to the majesty of Yellowstone National Park.

Additionally, Davis is the creator of the patented Ambient Therapy system, inspired by his own neck surgery in 2004. The system enhances healing by reducing stress, anxiety and other barriers to recovery, combining musical content and 4-channel surround sound algorithms. The Ambient Therapy system is used in medical facilities as Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic and The National Intrepid Center for Excellence

in Bethesda, Md. which serves wounded warriors.

Davis’ lifelong interest in astronomy has led to an extended relationship with NASA, including several trips to Kennedy Space Center in Cocoa Beach and Johnson Space Center in Houston where his team recorded Space Shuttle launches and landings that have been characterized as “the most accurate ever made.”

The indefatigable Davis still travels the country on behalf of American Gramophone, but prefers to spend his time on his 150-acre farm outside Omaha, joined by his children Kelly, Elyse, and Evan as well as his “farm family” – a full menagerie of critters including four horses and two timber wolves.

Chip Davis determinedly carries on each day with the original spirit of creative drive and invention that first inspired him. “There wasn’t any business plan when I started American Gramaphone,” he says. “There wasn’t any target I was looking at. It’s always been about just moving forward and doing things I like to do.”
