A WELCOME FROM OUR PRESIDENT Welcome back to MPAC! We are so happy to see you here again. I hope that you and your family are well and healthy. What makes our performing arts center so special is that it brings us together as a community to share the collective excitement of live theatre. We are thrilled to be able to be that community gathering place again. The COVID pandemic has truly tested the resolve of our theatre. Despite countless obstacles, we forged ahead and developed new and creative ways to serve our audiences, from drive-in concerts to virtual programming to online Performing Arts School classes to limited-capacity shows, and now, the return of full capacity events. MPAC has practiced stringent health guidelines since first reopening in October 2020 and we will continue to do everything within our ability to make our venue safe for our patrons, performers, volunteers and staff. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in following these guidelines as we reopen safely. Since 1937 this extraordinary theatre has celebrated good times and risen above dark periods, but only with the help of an incredible community. As a nonprofit theatre, we are profoundly grateful for the generosity of our patrons and supporters. Your contributions have been vital to our survival. I am confident that the brighter days are returning, and great new memories will be made in the upcoming season. Thank you so much for returning to MPAC. Let’s get on with the show!

A WELCOME FROM OUR BOARD CHAIRMAN Thank you for returning to MPAC. We know for many of you it’s been a while, and we’ve missed you. I’ve been pleased and impressed by how much MPAC has been able to deliver through the course of the pandemic, keeping the arts alive and engaging our patrons when their spirits have needed uplifting the most. I’m grateful to our dedicated members who have stood with us, giving because they believe our mission is more vital than ever. MPAC is thankful for the support of all of the individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies that have helped to sustain us through the pandemic. Whether it was a large gift or a few dollars added to a ticket purchase, every contributed dollar is appreciated. It means so much to us to know how much you value MPAC. While our situation has certainly improved since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, COVID remains unpredictable and we continue to face an uncertain future. It will take two to three years for MPAC to fully recover from the pandemic, and that’s provided there are no more downturns. We hope that you will support MPAC as we move ahead with our programs, bring in star-studded concerts, expand our educational offerings and develop diverse community-based arts programs. Pandemic or not, MPAC will be the leader in our arts community now and into the future. No doubt, this has been a very tough period in our history. We see the light at the end of the tunnel, and your support will help to make that light shine brighter. Please give from your heart, we need your support more than ever. Thank you. Please stay safe and I look forward to seeing you at MPAC. Sincerely, Gregory J. Supron Chairman, Board of Trustees

Black Violin: The Impossible Tour “We had a wall that we wrote stuff on,” says Wil Baptiste, describing the process that led to Black Violin’s new album, Take the Stairs. “We had all the ideas about what story we were going to convey. And it kept coming back to the idea of hope—songs that spoke about going against the grain, carrying through struggle, being optimistic. We wanted to say, ‘it’s tough now, but hang in there.’ ” Much like the ways their instruments interact on stage, Wil’s creative collaborator Kev Marcus echoes this theme, and then expands it. “Hope is the thread that keeps this thing together, it’s the heartbeat of this album,” he says. “But then a lot of tentacles went different ways—the song ‘Impossible is Possible’ is about challenging people. So it went different directions from just being hopeful, we took it a little further.”
engagement with youth symphonies and community centers. Through the TurnAround Arts program, Wil and Kev connect with more than 100,000 students throughout the year, mostly at low-income and Title 1 schools, and adopted Bethune Elementary, in Florida’s Broward County (near where they grew up) to initiate an ongoing mentorship program. Wil expresses the idea that, no matter how unique Black Violin’s music may be, it is ultimately more than just a creative enterprise. “It’s really a movement,” he says, “an organism that’s its own thing and really feels necessary.”
The first single released ahead of Take the Stairs was the timely and inspiring “Dreamer,” with a message that was immediately embraced by several commercial campaigns. “This is the day when I go all the way/I make it my own/ Here’s to the dreamers,” sings Wil. “That just really hit home,” says Kev. “It got to the heart of what we’re about.”
With Take the Stairs, Black Violin are striving to take their message of unity and inclusiveness even further, moving Wil’s vocals further forward while continuing to explore the possibilities of merging classical virtuosity and structure with modern beats and tones. “We wanted something different, beautiful songs that could go to radio,” says Wil. “I sing every night, so that’s nothing new, but we felt like we’ve never had that one song that can help elevate us to the next level. This album has records like ‘One Step’ that can appeal to everybody, so we lean a bit more on that, but we still had to keep that quintessential Black Violin sound.”
For more than a dozen years, Black Violin has been all about taking things further, exceeding expectations, challenging conventions. The classical-meets-hip-hop duo has steadily built a devoted following and a diverse touring base, while occupying a musical lane that’s entirely its own.
“When you’re a creative musician,” adds Kev, “when you press record, you let the music lead you. The vocals have definitely stepped up each time—Wil becomes more of a vocalist on each album and finds his voice a little more. It solidifies us as artists, too, trying to make a bigger stamp.”
“When you do something you love, it’s not difficult,” says Wil. “I’m just going on stage and being who I am. When people want to listen, when you touch them and make them want to keep fighting—to see that spreading out to more people, it’s about way more than just the music.” Indeed, Black Violin’s work extends far beyond the stage, reaching deep into urban communities with numerous free performances for students and hands-on
The members of Black Violin first met in Ft. Lauderdale, and played together in the orchestra at the Dillard High School of the Performing Arts. (Baptiste originally wanted to play saxophone in the band, but the orchestra teacher got him assigned to his class by winning a golf bet with the band instructor.) Classically trained by day, they faithfully put on their headphones and listened to the hottest rap records each night. They went to different colleges—Marcus

All the while, Black Violin continued touring non-stop (playing as many as 200 shows a year) and released two independent, selffinanced albums before putting out the acclaimed Stereotypes in 2016.
Wil says that Black Violin isn’t always explicit with its message, but that they don’t have to be—that the creation of an audience that is multi-generational, ethnically and economically diverse, is a powerful statement of its own. “The stereotypes are always there, embedded so deep in our culture,” he says. “Just by nature of our existence—the Idea that these black guys who could be football or basketball players are playing the violin—we challenge those ideas. It’s a unique thing that brings people together who aren’t usually in the same room, and in the current climate, it’s good to bring people together.”
The 13 tracks on Take the Stairs reveal the range and diversity of their influences and vocabulary, from “Showoff” (which Wil calls a “classic instrumental”) to the Curtis Mayfieldinspired “Lost in the Garden.” One favorite is “A Way Home”—“That record should be the Olympics theme song!,” says Wil. “I can see us going from country to country, engaging with different cultures. I played it for my wife and she started crying—that’s a special song It’s all wrapped up in the name of the album. right there.” “For sixteen years, we’ve slowly been taking Kev notes that “inspiration can come from the stairs,” says Kev. “It’s a gradual kind of anywhere—the cable guy played me an snowball where now we have control, we Ethiopian tune when he was fixing my can tour in Alaska—we took the hard way for modem.” He points to the track “Al Green” so many years, now we can look back and as an example of the journey that Black see what we’ve learned. Violin songs can take. “I had a Dvorak piece called ‘Slavonic Dancers’ and I was into that vibe,” he says. “I played it for Salaam Remi [who has worked with the likes of Nas, Amy Winehouse, and the Fugees, and coproduced and is featured on several Take

APRIL
Outstanding Violinists Indra Balakrishnan Grade 8, Mountain View Middle School; Mendham; Nominated by Leigh Carpenter Indra is one of the most accelerated string students our school has had in 20 years. Indra plays her instrument at a very high level, but what is even more impressive about Indra is that she is so very musical with her playing. There is so much emotion and passion that shines forth from her phrasing. She has a maturity way beyond her years, and when she plays, it touches your soul. Indra is a consummate scholar. She is self-motivated and takes ownership of all aspects of her learning. She is continually trying to better herself and even asks for the strongest criticism that I can give her. But being in an ensemble is about more than the individual. And here is where Indra stands out. Indra is always willing to share her expertise and passion for music with her classmates. She helps teach them accelerated techniques and shares with them her very advanced level of insight into critique and music theory. She does this in such a thoughtful and kind way, that it encourages her peers, lifting them up. I am so very fortunate to have Indra as a student. She inspires me and is a joy to teach. She is a young woman of character who is a huge asset to our music program and orchestra. Isabel Chan Grade 11, Chatham High School; Chatham; Nominated by Liam Keller Isabel is a junior violinist who has been a part of the orchestra program in Chatham for her entire time in the district. I worked with Isabel for three years as the Director of Orchestras, Chamber Ensemble Advisor, Honors Music Advisor, and Music Theory teacher. Isabel is a highly organized and motivated musician, constantly striving to achieve her personal high standard for performance in everything she does. Isabel is a strong student leader and her peers and faculty respected her academic work and character. As a member of the orchestra program and chamber music ensemble, Isabel was confident during rehearsals and consistently demonstrated excellence during many professional performances. Isabel has demonstrated leadership abilities time and time again being in charge of the 1st section her Sophomore year in Concert Orchestra and Concertmaster her Junior year. My assessment of Isabel is extremely positive. Isabel has been a constant positive force of energy motivating her peers to excellence. Always interested in the concerns of others, she was available to help students requesting assistance by becoming a tutor for her peers. Isabel is a team player and understands the process of moving from the model of good to great. Isabel is driven by a personal desire to improve her life so she can enrich the lives of others, shown in her free lessons that she teaches to fourth and fifth grade students. It is with great pleasure that I recommend Isabel be granted consideration for this award. Cailyn Kouh Grade 8, Madison Junior School; Madison; Nominated by Kathleen McCormick Cailyn has earned multiple leadership roles in the orchestra including Concertmistress for this year’s Winter and Spring concerts and invitations to participate in Madison’s All-City Honors Orchestra. She is also a first violinist in our 8th grade honors chamber ensemble, the “MJS 8th The 2021-2022 Music Student of the Month program is supported by The Walter F. and Alice Gorham Foundation, Inc.
OUTSTANDING VIOLINISTS Notes”. Cailyn not only capably fulfills her performing responsibilities but she readily seeks out other musical opportunities. Last summer she participated in our summer arts program and not only signed up for orchestra as a violinist, but took bass and saxophone lessons. This school year, she voluntarily chose to take a Music Theory elective in addition to Orchestra. Cailyn is a valued member of the 8th grade orchestra. She learns her music flawlessly and is respected by her peers. They often choose her as the section representative to complete the musical challenges given in class. She is responsible, conscientious and modest about her talent, always willing to help her stand partner or a younger student without expectation of any recognition. Saya Neff Grade 8, Mountain View Middle School; Mendham; Nominated by Leigh Carpenter Saya is spectacular in all aspects as a violinist. She dazzles with her technical expertise. She can play in many styles incorporating a multitude of different techniques on her instrument. She plays scales in multiple octaves over the full range of her instrument. She has amazing intonation and can often tune even without a reference pitch. Saya is very advanced not only technically but more importantly, musically. Saya is also very creative in her musicality. She recently tried her hand at arranging a popular song in duet form for herself and a fellow student. The harmonies were very beautiful and Saya and her friend did a great job performing it. I am so very fortunate to have Saya as a student because she shares her expertise with her classmates and is a strong peer mentor. The other students look up to her and are inspired by her excellence. She is a model the students aspire to as they strive to match her pitch, form, and style. Saya is a wonderful young lady and incredible musician. Marbeth Torres Grade 11, Morristown High School; Morristown; Nominated by Norma Davis Marbeth Torres has been an outstanding violinist in the Morristown High School Orchestra for the past three years. She is a strong natural leader who always puts forth her best effort, striving to bring the notes on the page to life with emotion and style. Marbeth is also a violinist in the select Chamber Orchestra, Camerata ensemble, the Pit Orchestras for both the high school and middle school productions, and the Abbey Orchestra. She never shies away from a challenge, and works diligently to bring energy and personality from the music with every stroke of her bow. Marbeth is extremely dedicated and passionate about the violin and performs beautifully in every opportunity that arises. Marbeth is a role model for her peers in rehearsals, helping others learn their parts, practicing together to coordinate parts, leading sectionals, and working hard to make the orchestra great. Marbeth is a very talented and enthusiastic violinist - music will always have an important role in her life. Eesha Vavilala & Medha Vavilala Grade 7, Brooklawn Middle School; Parsippany; Nominated by Joseph Stella Eesha & Medha are twin sisters who both play clarinet in the Brooklawn Middle School 7th grade band. Both were also selected by audition this year to the North Jersey School Music Association’s Intermediate Region Band. In addition to their commitment to playing clarinet in our school’s concert band and beyond, they are also both violinists. Eesha & Medha have successfully auditioned for our school’s pit orchestra for the musical “Annie.” With their versatile musical talent, willingness to put musical activities first and ongoing polite and respectful demeanor, they are both qualified recipients of the Outstanding Violinist recognition.
