A WELCOME FROM OUR PRESIDENT Welcome back to MPAC! We are so happy to see you here again. I hope that you and your family are well and healthy. What makes our performing arts center so special is that it brings us together as a community to share the collective excitement of live theatre. We are thrilled to be able to be that community gathering place again. The COVID pandemic has truly tested the resolve of our theatre. Despite countless obstacles, we forged ahead and developed new and creative ways to serve our audiences, from drive-in concerts to virtual programming to online Performing Arts School classes to limited-capacity shows, and now, the return of full capacity events. MPAC has practiced stringent health guidelines since first reopening in October 2020 and we will continue to do everything within our ability to make our venue safe for our patrons, performers, volunteers and staff. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in following these guidelines as we reopen safely. Since 1937 this extraordinary theatre has celebrated good times and risen above dark periods, but only with the help of an incredible community. As a nonprofit theatre, we are profoundly grateful for the generosity of our patrons and supporters. Your contributions have been vital to our survival. I am confident that the brighter days are returning, and great new memories will be made in the upcoming season. Thank you so much for returning to MPAC. Let’s get on with the show!

A WELCOME FROM OUR BOARD CHAIRMAN Thank you for returning to MPAC. We know for many of you it’s been a while, and we’ve missed you. I’ve been pleased and impressed by how much MPAC has been able to deliver through the course of the pandemic, keeping the arts alive and engaging our patrons when their spirits have needed uplifting the most. I’m grateful to our dedicated members who have stood with us, giving because they believe our mission is more vital than ever. MPAC is thankful for the support of all of the individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies that have helped to sustain us through the pandemic. Whether it was a large gift or a few dollars added to a ticket purchase, every contributed dollar is appreciated. It means so much to us to know how much you value MPAC. While our situation has certainly improved since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, COVID remains unpredictable and we continue to face an uncertain future. It will take two to three years for MPAC to fully recover from the pandemic, and that’s provided there are no more downturns. We hope that you will support MPAC as we move ahead with our programs, bring in star-studded concerts, expand our educational offerings and develop diverse community-based arts programs. Pandemic or not, MPAC will be the leader in our arts community now and into the future. No doubt, this has been a very tough period in our history. We see the light at the end of the tunnel, and your support will help to make that light shine brighter. Please give from your heart, we need your support more than ever. Thank you. Please stay safe and I look forward to seeing you at MPAC. Sincerely, Gregory J. Supron Chairman, Board of Trustees

Roy Orbison & Buddy Holly: The Rock ‘N’ Roll Dream Tour ROY ORBISON Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist (1936-1988) Early Life: Roy Kelton Orbison was born on April 23, 1936, in Vernon, Texas. A year before Beatlemania overtook the United States in 1964, the four lads from Liverpool invited Orbison to open for them on their English tour. On his first night, Orbison performed 14 encores before the Beatles even made it on stage. Roy Orbison, who didn’t have the Beatles’ looks, Sinatra’s swagger or Elvis’s pelvis, was perhaps the most unlikely sex symbol of the 1960s. He dressed like an insurance salesman and was famously lifeless during his performances. “He never even twitched,” recalled George Harrison, who was simultaneously awestruck and confounded by Orbison’s stage presence. “He was like marble.” What Orbison did have was one of the most distinctive, versatile and powerful voices in pop music. In the words of Elvis Presley, Orbison was simply “the greatest singer in the world.” Born to a working-class Texan family in 1936, Orbison grew up immersed in musical styles ranging from rockabilly and country to zydeco, Tex-Mex and the blues. His dad gave him a guitar for his sixth birthday and he wrote his first song, “A Vow of Love,” when he was 8. In high school, Orbison played the local circuit with a group called the Teen Kings. When their song “Ooby Dooby” came to the attention of Sam Phillips, the legendary producer at Sun Records, Orbison was invited to cut a few tracks. In addition to a highly collectible album called Roy Orbison at the Rockhouse, their collaboration yielded a re-recording of “Ooby Dooby” that became Orbison’s first minor hit.
2 spot on the Billboard singles chart, “Only the Lonely” has since been deemed a pivotal force in the development of rock music. Between 1960 and 1965, Orbison recorded nine Top 10 hits and another ten that broke into the Top 40. These included “Running Scared,” “Crying,” “It’s Over” and “Oh, Pretty Woman,” none of which adheres to a conventional song structure. When it came to composition, Orbison called himself “blessed ... with not knowing what was wrong or what was right.” As he put it, “the structure sometimes has the chorus at the end of the song, and sometimes there is no chorus, it just goes ... But that’s always after the fact—as I’m writing, it all sounds natural and in sequence to me.” As distinctive as his three-octave voice and unorthodox songwriting technique was Orbison’s unglamorous style, which some have described as “geek chic.” Stricken with both jaundice and bad eyesight as a child, Orbison had sallow skin and thick corrective eyewear, not to mention a shy demeanor. On a fateful day during his 1963 tour with the Beatles, Orbison left his glasses on the plane before a show, which forced him to wear his unsightly prescription sunglasses for that night’s show. Although he considered theincident “embarrassing,” the look became an instant trademark.
Orbison’s unhip underdog look suited his music well, as his lyrics were marked by incredible vulnerability. At a time when rock music went hand-in-hand with confidence and machismo, Orbison dared to sing about insecurity, heartache and fear. His stage persona, which has been described as borderline masochistic, went a long way Acclaimed Musical Career toward challenging the traditional ideal of After Orbison landed a record deal with the aggressive masculinity in rock ‘n’ roll. His big break came after he tried rise of Orbison’s star, the second half of the to pitch his composition “Only the Lonely” to decade brought harder times. Tragedy struck both Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers, when Orbison’s wife, Claudette, was killed in a and was turned down by both. Deciding to motorcycle accident in 1966, and again when record the song himself, Orbison used his his two oldest sons died in a house fire in vibrato voice and operatic style to create a 1968. Following those incidents, a devastated recording unlike anything Americans had Orbison failed to generate many hits—and heard at the time. Buddy Holly learned to play piano and fiddle at an early age, while his older brothers taught him the basics of guitar. A 1949 home recording of “My Two-Timin’ Woman” showcases Holly’s skilled, if prepubescent, singing voice. Holly’s mother and father, a tailor by trade, both proved to be very supportive of their son’s burgeoning musical talents, generating song ideas and even penning a letter to the editor of Lubbock’s newspaper in defense of rock ‘n’ roll-loving teenagers lambasted in a conservative editorial. Despite his parents’ support, Holly couldn’t have become a founding father of rock ‘n’ roll without engaging in some degree of rebellion. Once a preacher at the local Tabernacle Baptist Church asked him, “What would you do if you had $10?” The young rocker reportedly muttered, “If I had $10, I wouldn’t be here.” Holly had clearly set his sights on something other than growing up to join his brothers in their tiling business.
Last Years and Legacy Orbison returned to his musical career in 1980, however, when the Eagles invited him to join them on their “Hotel California” tour. That same year, he rekindled his relationship with country music fans by performing a memorable duet with Emmylou Harris on “That Lovin’ You Feeling Again,” which went on to win a Grammy Award. When Van Halen covered “Oh, Pretty Woman” in 1982, rock fans were reminded that gratitude for the song was owed to Orbison. By the late 1980s, Orbison had staged a successful comeback, joined the all-star supergroup The Traveling Wilburys (alongside Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Jeff Lynn) and been admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. After high school, Holly formed a band and Orbison died of a heart attack on December 6, played country and western songs regularly 1988. Although he was only 52 viewed Holly’s opening for Elvis Presley in when he died, Orbison lived to see his rightful 1955 as a crucial turning point for the singer. “When Elvis came along,” Curtis recalls, place in music history restored. “Buddy fell in love with Elvis and we began Despite his sales, charts and accolades, to change. The next day we became Elvis Orbison is most remembered today as an clones.” Although the bespectacled, bow-tied improbable rock star who put his heart on youth lacked Elvis’s incendiary sex appeal, his sleeve and moved people with his music. Holly’s conversion from country to rock ‘n’ “When you were trying to make a girl fall in roll did not go unnoticed. A record company love with you,” Tom Waits once recalled, “it talent scout soon caught his act at a skating took roses, the Ferris wheel and Roy Orbison.” rink and signed him to a contract. In early 1956, Holly and his band began recording demos and singles in Nashville under the name Buddy Holly and the Three Tunes, but the group’s lineup was later revised Early Life Born Charles Hardin Holley on September and dubbed The Crickets. Holly wrote and 7, 1936, in Lubbock, Texas. As the fourth recorded his breakthrough hit, “That’ll Be the and youngest child in his family, Holly was Day,” with The Crickets in 1957. The song’s title BUDDY HOLLY Singer (1936-1959)
Roy Orbison & Buddy Holly: The Rock ‘N’ Roll Dream Tour and refrain are a reference to a line uttered by John Wayne in the 1956 film The Searchers. Between August 1957 and August 1958, Holly and the Crickets charted seven different Top 40 singles. Coincidentally, “That’ll Be the Day” topped the U.S. chart exactly 500 days before Holly’s untimely death. Solo Career and Untimely Death In October 1958, Holly split from The Crickets and moved to Greenwich Village in New York City. Due to legal and financial problems resulting from the band’s breakup, Holly reluctantly agreed to tour through the Midwest in 1959 with The Winter Dance Party. Tired of enduring broken-down buses in subfreezing conditions, Holly chartered a private plane to take him from a show in Clear Lake, Iowa, to the tour’s next stop in Moorhead, Minnesota. Holly was joined on the doomed flight by fellow performers Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. The plane crashed within minutes of leaving the ground, killing all aboard. Buddy Holly was just 22 years old. His funeral was held at the Tabernacle Baptist Church back in Lubbock. Buddy Holly proposed on his first date with Maria Elena Santiago, a receptionist four years his senior, and married her less than two months later in 1958. Maria Elena did not attend Holly’s funeral, as she had also just suffered a miscarriage. She still owns the rights to Buddy Holly’s name, image, trademarks and other intellectual property.
Holly’s death was memorialized in Don McLean’s iconic song “American Pie” as “the day the music died.” Holly’s music never really died, though, despite the singer’s tragic and untimely death. Unissued recordings and compilations of Holly’s work were released in a steady stream throughout the 1960s. Due to the continued popularity of his music and film adaptations of his life’s story, Holly’s hiccup and horn-rimmed glasses are easily recognizable today. Though his professional career spanned just two short years, Holly’s recorded material has influenced the likes of Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan, who, at age 17, saw Holly perform on his final tour. The Rolling Stones had their first Top 10 single in 1964 with a cover of Holly’s “Not Fade Away.” The Beatles chose their name as a kind of homage to The Crickets, and Paul McCartney has since purchased Holly’s publishing rights. Buddy Holly’s lasting impact on pop music was even larger. The Crickets pioneered the now-standard rock lineup of two guitars, bass, and drums. Holly was also among the first artists to use studio techniques such as double-tracking on his albums. Despite Holly’s numerous contributions to rock ‘n’ roll, a 1957 interview with Canadian disc jockey Red Robinson suggests that the singer questioned the longevity of the genre. When asked whether rock ‘n’ roll music would still be around after six or seven months, Holly replied, “I rather doubt it.”

Outstanding Guitarists & Percussionists Kendra Brooks Grade 8, Ridgedale Middle School; Florham Park; Nominated by Michael Leone Kendra is currently an 8th grade percussionist at Ridgedale Middle School. She has been with us since sixth grade. March 2020, during her sixth grade year, we closed our school building and went fully virtual. Our instrumental music program was fully virtual through the remainder of her sixth grade year and her entire seventh grade year. Despite these obvious and enormous challenges, Kendra has shown diligence and respect for her craft well beyond her years. She is a strong and reliable leader in our 7th/8th Grade Band and always strives to help others succeed, as well as lead by example. Our instrumental music program is very successfully beginning its climb back from more than an entire fully virtual school year, and Kendra Brooks is one of the reasons for that success. Calyb Craig Grade 7, Black River Middle School; Chester; Nominated by Dr. Kenneth Piascik Calyb Craig is the definition of a well-rounded, dedicated, and talented musician. A “Complete” Percussionist! Mr. Craig joined our music department in the 6th grade and has continued to develop our program above and beyond. His energy, positive attitude, helpfulness, leadership, and passion inspire us all. Not only is Mr. Craig in the full band, but he also participates in our Honors Percussion Ensemble, “Encore” Jazz Ensemble, Theory Program, and is a top member of our “Music Level System.” Where there is music at Black River, you will find Mr. Craig close by. One of the great parts of being a teacher is listening to my students talk about their passions in life. This has given me the chance to experience some amazing people and achievements. Mr. Craig cares deeply about our world, other people’s feelings, and improving everyone’s quality of life. He extends this kindness to our community and the members of the band respect and consider him to be a great leader. Calyb Craig is without a doubt an “Outstanding Percussionist”, and I am very proud to be part of his musical journey. Michael Dalessio Grade 12, Jefferson Township High School; Oak Ridge; Nominated by Dan Gugger Michael Dalessio is among the top percussion students I have worked with in my career. He has all the traits of someone who can enter a successful career in performance. He is a fantastic reader and player of battery percussion and drum kit. He recently made the rounds on social media playing quints upside down in our marching band. Mike is consistently accepted in external ensembles like County, Area and Region Band. He is a section leader in every area of our music program and sets a great example for his peers. I highly recommend Mike Dalessio for Outstanding Percussionist! Sean Dooley Grade 9, Delbarton School; Morristown; Nominated by Andrew Lyman Sean is a fantastic person and a highly skilled percussionist at a young age. At the start of the year all students auditioned for seating in our music ensembles, and Sean became the principal percussionist in our High School Band. Throughout the past few months, Sean has
The 2021-2022 Music Student of the Month program is supported by The Walter F. and Alice Gorham Foundation, Inc.
OUTSTANDING GUITARISTS & PERCUSSIONISTS been extremely reliable, trustworthy, and helpful. He works hard to learn his music as soon as possible, and lends a helping hand to the other percussionists in his section. Sean is very confident in his playing and always strives to help make the other musicians around him better. He is a true leader and it is a pleasure to have him in our ensemble. CJ Guarente Grade 8, Mountain View Middle School; Mendham; Nominated by Lee Carpenter I am nominating CJ Guarente for Music Student of the Month because he is a great example of a music student and learner, and just a wonderful young man with qualities that the world needs more of. CJ is motivated to learn. He takes ownership of his musical growth. He doesn’t wait for instruction to come to him; he identifies what he needs to improve on and reaches out to ask for help. CJ is self-disciplined and very consistent; he always showed up for virtual lessons during the pandemic, on time and well prepared. He takes instruction well and applies all that is taught to him. He has taken on the challenge to become a well-rounded percussionist learning not only snare drum, but mallet instruments, drum set, and every other percussion instrument as well. Slow and steady, little by little has shown that small gains made consistently add up to amazing progress. This year CJ is participating in the All-District Honors Band and is auditioning for Regions Band. He also pursues high-level private instruction. CJ is a fine musician, but more important than that, a fine young man with a wonderful attitude, a kind heart, and an unflappable positive attitude that will take him far in life. If only adults could be as self-composed as CJ is at such a young age. The world needs more people like CJ and it is for this reason that I nominate him for Music Student of the Month. Darian Letz Grade 8, Brooklawn Middle School; Parsippany; Nominated by Joseph Stella Darian is an 8th grade percussionist who has shown tremendous growth in concert band during the past two years making him one of our top players. In addition to building on his musical skills, he has really improved his attitude toward music. This year, he has also taken on the challenge of being the drum set player in our school’s jazz band. He would be a fitting recipient of the Outstanding Percussionist recognition. Gerard Palmieri Grade 7, Mount Arlington Public School; Mount Arlington; Nominated by Dr. Michael Aberback Gerard Palmieri is an exceptional percussionist and band member. He has been a dedicated and enthusiastic member of my band program for the past 4 years. He currently plays in our school Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble. In order to participate in these ensembles, Gerard attends before-school morning rehearsals 3 times a week. He is never late for rehearsal, has not had a single unexcused absence this year, and he always arrived prepared and excited to play. Gerard is a well-rounded percussionist. He is an excellent drum set player as well as a talented mallet player. He has a very solid sense of tempo, a good ear, and strong technique. Gerard is hard working, good-natured and well-liked by his peers. He is a pleasure to work with in band. I think he would greatly enjoy as well as benefit from seeing the Stomp show at MPAC as we are currently working on a Stomp-style piece for garbage cans in percussion ensemble. It is without hesitation that I nominate Gerard Palmieri for the Music Student of the Month Outstanding Percussionist award Zoe Pierce Grade 6, Brooklawn Middle School; Parsippany; Nominated by Joseph Stella Zoe is a 6th grade clarinetist who has been selected by audition to play guitar in our school’s jazz band. She takes guitar lessons outside of school and is quite serious about learning this instrument. An overall pleasant, cooperative and respectful demeanor adds to Zoe’s musical talent making her a fitting recipient of the Outstanding Guitarist recognition.
OUTSTANDING GUITARISTS & PERCUSSIONISTS Jimmy Scholz Grade 12, Whippany Park High School; Whippany; Nominated by Carl Sabatino Jimmy has shown continued growth from his time as a freshman until now. His passion for percussion as well as his drive to improve make him a fine student musician worthy of this honor. As a leader, he is determined to leave the percussion section better than he found it. He has both the patience to work with the younger students and the technique to teach the older ones. He is always the first person at every one of our rehearsals and is among the last to leave. He does everything that needs to be done so that the members of his section have the best chance to succeed. I highly recommend Jimmy Scholz. Meredith Weiner Grade 12, Madison High School; Madison; Nominated by Russ Batch Meredith is one of the best percussion students I have had in 26 years of teaching. Not only does she take her own craft seriously, and rise to the occasion for all forms of percussion playing, but she takes her relationship with the other students in the section seriously as well. Meredith can often be seen helping those that need extra assistance with rhythms, or technique. Students seek her out with questions about music or how to maintain instruments. Meredith, in addition to being our leader in Marching Band, Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, is also involved in an entire host of outside of school percussion activities that allow her to grow her skill and knowledge of the instruments.

Your support will strengthen MPAC and create a lasting legacy for generations to come.
MPAC thanks our Encore Society Members for their generous support!
