A Note from the Director: I am so proud to be a part of the team responsible for bringing our second main stage musical to life at MPAC! The musical Hairspray, based on the original John Waters film and winner of 8 Tony Awards is most often thought of for its high energy musical numbers, hilarious book and colorful characters and seemed to be a natural fit for our talented group of young performers. I’ve always loved the score and the story but was particularly motivated to produce this production because in between its many delightful layers is the core message of acceptance, inclusion and equality. Whether it’s someone’s size, sexual orientation or color of their skin, Hairspray reminds us all that recognizing and embracing the differences, beauty and heart in every person is essential to creating a world with less hate. It has been such a gift to work with an amazing cast and to watch them grow and consistently take on the many challenges of a tricky score, challenging choreography and complex characters while maintaining our mutual dedication to expressing the very important themes of Hairspray to our audience in an impactful yet entertaining way. This full scale production would not be possible today without the hard work and dedication of our amazing Creative and Production staff. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart! I hope you are all able to sit back, relax and enjoy the production. It is our hope that you will all leave here today motivated to follow in the footsteps of Tracy Turnblad – accept others, dream big and dance through life to an unstoppable beat! Thank you all for your support in helping us to foster the talent of so many wonderful young performers!
Cathy Roy Director
A Note from the President and CEO: Get ready for a great performance! Hairspray is sheer joy. We are so excited and proud of the work that the cast and crew have done getting this show ready to take the stage. If it’s anything close to last year’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – and we know it will be even better -- you’ll be in for a delightful time. Hairspray is the ultimate example of the amazing work that the MPAC’s education department has done in our community and throughout New Jersey. Did you know that every 3rd and 4th grader in the Morris School District is involved in programs created by MPAC? Or that we launched a pilot program with Paterson schools and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital to bring sorely lacking arts program to its school district? Or that over 35,000 children are bused into MPAC annually for educational school shows? The list of accomplishments is extensive and growing. If your child goes to school in the area, they probably have been touched by an educational program or offering by MPAC. All of this has been accomplished in less than ten years. Our dedication to arts education goes beyond merely teaching someone to sing, dance or act. It is focused on getting children to look beyond the virtual world of texting and tweeting and into the world of creating and communicating. The skills gained in arts education go far beyond the stage – they inspire confidence, cooperation and teamwork – skills essential no matter what path your child may follow. On behalf of the staff and Board of Trustees of the Mayo Performing Arts Center, I would like to congratulate Cathy Roy, our Education Director, and Director of Hairspray, her entire creative team, the production crew and especially our wonderful youth performers on a job well done. We’re all so proud! Best wishes,
Allison Larena President and CEO Mayo Performing Arts Center
