A Note From the Director: “People hate the things they cannot understand.” I didn’t have to read much further past that line in the opening of “Shrek” to know that this would be our 6th annual spring musical. Choosing our show every year is always a difficult task. We aim to find the perfect blend of education, entertainment and a strong message to resonate through our cast and have an impact on our audiences. It seemed to me that this was the year where we needed to make people laugh a little louder, feel a little deeper and think a little harder about acceptance, friendship, tolerance, love and kindness. William Steig wrote and illustrated the picture book “Shrek!” in 1990. Over a decade later, Dreamworks adapted the story into an animated feature film, which parodied many other fairytales, and appealed to both children and adults. It quickly became a blockbuster hit and received the first ever Academy Award for Best Animated feature. David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori started writing Shrek, The Musical a year after the film’s release. It opened on Broadway and enjoyed a successful two year run, received 8 Tony Award nominations, and went on to a highly successful West End run and U.S. tour. The show is now being produced all over the world. Directing and choreographing this production of Shrek, The Musical has been an amazing journey! Working with a cast who pours their heart into every word, note and step is truly a gift. It has been a joy to watch them create such vivid characters and tell this beautiful story with passion, love and commitment. Today’s youth has an amazing power to make an impact on our society and watching this group of young people embrace and convey the important themes and messages of this piece has truly been inspiring! I have also had the pleasure to collaborate with a fantastic creative team and a top-notch production staff. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart. Lastly, we would be nowhere without our audience and we thank you all for your tremendous support. We hope that you will be inspired to leave here today and forever “Let Your Freak Flag Fly!!”

A Note from the President and CEO: We are so excited and proud of the work that the cast and crew have done getting this performance ready to take the stage. Shrek the Musical continues our tradition of memorable Spring productions, which also include West Side Story, Mary Poppins, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hairspray and Les Misérables. Shrek is the ultimate example of the amazing work that MPAC’s education department continues to do in our community and throughout New Jersey. Young performers get to work with and learn from experienced professionals who share their love for the performing arts in a team environment. In any given year, approximately 40,000 children and their families experience MPAC education-related events. Over 650 children participate in Performing Arts School classes annually, including nearly 50 students and peer volunteers in our Miracle Project classes, designed for children on the autism spectrum and with other special needs. Between PAS classes and the Performing Arts Company, our teen performing group, MPAC awards over $30,000 in scholarships for valuable training experience. In fact, no child has ever been turned away due to inability to pay for a class. The list of accomplishments is extensive and continues to grow. Our dedication to arts education goes beyond merely teaching someone to sing, dance or act. It is focused on inspiring creativity and improving communication skills. The skills gained in arts education go far beyond the stage – they inspire confidence, cooperation and teamwork – skills essential no matter what path your child may follow. On behalf of the staff and Board of Trustees of Mayo Performing Arts Center, I would like to congratulate Cathy Roy, our Education Director and Director of Shrek the Musical, her entire cast and creative team, the production crew and especially our wonderful youth performers on a job well done. We’re all so proud! Best wishes,
