OUTSTANDING PERCUSSIONISTS
Parker Abramson Grade 8, Mountain View School, Mendham, Nominated by Leigh Carpenter Parker is the type of student a band director wishes they had a hundred of. Parker plays at an advanced skill level, is a self-motivated and disciplined learner, and has great passion for music. Parker immediately takes correction and applies it to her playing - and not just for the day but will remember it for the next class, rehearsal, performance! She asks for enhanced work, and volunteers to do solos, for example, Parker even taught herself to play the drumset in order to accompany our Choir when she found out there was a need. Parker is valuable to our group as she can be relied upon to give of herself to help focus the other students in her section, and to help teach them the music. Jordan Durnal Grade 12, Jefferson Township High School, Oak Ridge, Nominated by Rich Barrieres Jordan is our principal chair percussionist. He also held the position of Drumline Section Leader in our marching band and plays drum set in our Jazz Band. Jordan takes the time to assign parts for both our Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. Jordan was accepted into the All Sussex County Band and has performed with the County College of Morris Wind Ensemble. This year we will present an original piece for percussion ensemble written by Jordan in Music Theory class at our ensemble concert in May. Spencer Gaffney Grade 8, Randolph Middle School, Randolph, Nominated by Tom Davidson Spencer is a percussionist in the Randolph Middle School 8th Grade Band and Percussion Ensemble. He is also the piano player in the Jazz Ensemble. This year, he successfully auditioned into both the North Jersey School Music Association Junior Region Band and Intermediate Orchestra on mallet percussion and piano. Outside of school, he studies privately under the famous jazz pianist Rio Clemente and takes marimba lessons at The Music Den. Last summer, Spencer participated in a music camp at The Music Den where he worked with other students at arranging and playing various types of music compositions. He has also participated in several semesters of acting workshops at the Mayo Performing Arts School as well as attending MPAC’s summer sessions for both the Young Actor’s and Teen Actor’s Workshops. Marvin Li Grade 7, Brooklawn Middle School, Parsippany, Nominated by Joseph Stella Marvin is a percussionist in our 7th grade band and was selected by audition to play the drum set part in this year’s pit orchestra for our school musical. He is always receptive to being challenged in his lessons with increasingly more difficult music. He has also done well with learning the many types of percussion instruments, including the mallet instruments. Mujtaba Raja Grade 7, John Hill School, Boonton, Nominated by Yvonne Manca Mujtaba has been playing the drums since fourth grade. He is an excellent reader and is able to perform the band music with confidence and expression. Mujtaba plays for the Harmony Drum Corps located in town. He attends practice regularly and is a great addition to the group. Mujtaba is not only an excellent reader on the snare drum but he can play a variety of auxiliary percussion when asked. Mitchell Ryzuk Grade 12, Parsippany High School, Parsippany, Nominated by Gregory Dalakian Mitchell has been involved in every single facet of the PHS music program since his freshman year. He has served as the Snare Captain of the Drumline the last two years and the Drumline Section Leader this past year. He has also been our Jazz Band drummer all through high school and has played drumset for every high school and middle school pit orchestra since he was in middle school. Mitchell is a talented musician who always leads by example and gladly gives of his time and efforts in order for our band program to succeed. He is truly an outstanding band member with a true passion for music.
