A welcome from our President Happy 80th birthday to MPAC! Mayo Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit organization, has been at the heart of arts and entertainment in Morristown since it first opened as the single screen Community Theatre in 1937. Eighty years later, it is an honor and a privilege to be part of a community that is committed to sustaining the legacy that Walter Reade originally founded. Through your support, this magnificent historic venue has helped to create wonderful experiences and memories for so many; memories that we continue to share with our family and friends through many generations. As part of our mission, we proudly continue the tradition of giving back, offering enriching programs that serve the public, often at no cost. Be on the lookout throughout the year as we announce free lectures, movies, concerts on the mainstage, performances on the plaza and events throughout the community. We hope you will take advantage of these diverse and exciting opportunities. Education and outreach are integral parts of our mission. MPAC brings the arts into schools, community centers, nursing homes and hospitals – bringing joy, inspiring hope, and instilling a sense of creativity and community to students in schools lacking arts programs and to those unable to travel to the Theatre. MPAC’s Miracle Project classes for those with special needs, and our relaxed performances on the main stage, are perfect examples of how the arts can truly became a transformative experience in someone’s life. It is the goal of our entire organization to create an accessible and inclusive environment that offers something for everyone. Thank you for supporting us and for joining us again this season. We are thrilled to continue the tradition of offering memorable experiences, this year, and in the next eighty years. Warm Regards,

Allison Larena President & CEO

A welcome from our Board Chairman Mayo Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit arts organization, contributes to the well-being and economic health of the community we serve. Earlier this year, Americans for the Arts, a national nonprofit arts advocacy group, completed a study of the economic impact of the arts locally and nationally in 2015. The study indicates that communities that support the arts and culture not only enhance their quality of life—they also invest in their economic well-being. Working with Morris Arts and Art Pride New Jersey, the study provides compelling evidence that the nonprofit arts and culture sector is a $31.8 million industry in Morris County—one that supports nearly 1,000 full-time equivalent jobs and generates $3.2 million annually in local and state government revenue. Whether serving the local community or out-of-town visitors, a vibrant arts and culture industry helps local businesses thrive. Unlike most industries, the arts leverage significant event-related spending by their audiences. Nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, which spent $15.8 million during 2015, leveraged a remarkable $16 million in additional spending by their audiences—spending that pumped vital revenue into restaurants, hotels, retail stores, parking garages, and other local businesses. As the largest arts organization in the county, our economic impact alone has been calculated at over $15 million. MPAC is proud to be a valuable community partner. As we look toward the future, we hope to meet the growing needs of our community and be the central resource for entertainment and arts education that makes Morristown one of the best communities in New Jersey to work, live and raise a family. We appreciate your support in helping us achieve this goal and hope that you will continue to recognize the value of Mayo Performing Arts Center in your community. Sincerely,

Joseph M. Goryeb Chairman, Board of Trustees

THE CHIEFTAINS “55 years, wow, where have they gone as we’re still going strong”, says Paddy Moloney, leader of the six-time Grammy Award winners, The Chieftains. The Chieftains have been highly recognized for reinventing traditional Irish music on a contemporary and International scale. The Chieftains were formed in Ireland in 1962 by Paddy Moloney, one of the top traditional folk musicians in Ireland and around the world. Their ability to transcend musical boundaries to blend tradition with modern music has notably hailed them as one of the most renowned and revered musical groups to this day. After more than 55 years of making some of the most beautiful music in the world, The Chieftains’ music remains as fresh and relevant as when they first began. So now The Chieftains are set to embark on their 55th Anniversary Tour in the US beginning in Califonia on February 17th making their way across the US to the east coast with a final show on St. Patrick’s Day in Jacksonville, Florida. Paddy Moloney says, “This tour will have all the musical force of what we’ve accumulated and achieved over the last 55 years, with a few extra gems thrown in for good measure”. As cultural ambassadors, their performances have been linked with seminal historic events, such as being the first Western musicians to perform on the Great Wall of China, participating in Roger Water’s “The Wall” performance in Berlin in 1990 and being the first ensemble to perform a concert in the Capitol Building in Washington DC. In 2010, their experimental collaborations extended to out of this world, when Paddy Moloney’s whistle and Matt Molloy’s flute travelled with NASA astronaut, Cady Coleman, to the international space station. Although their early following was purely a folk audience, the range and variation of their music and accompanying musicians quickly captured a much broader audience, elevating their status to the likeness of fellow Irish band, U2. The Chieftains are never afraid to shock purists and push genre boundaries and the trappings of fame have not altered The Chieftains’ love of, and loyalty to, their roots however - are as comfortable playing spontaneous Irish sessions as they are headlining a concert at Carnegie Hall. Paddy finishes with, “With this tour of music, song, dance and a few surprises…..our guests are the cream of the crop joining in for a great party”. MARC COHN FEATURING THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA MARC COHN After winning a GRAMMY for his soulful ballad “Walking in Memphis,” Marc Cohn solidified his place as one of this generation’s most compelling singer/songwriters, combining the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. He’s a natural storyteller, balancing the exuberant with the poignant, and able to distilluniversal truth out of his often romantic, drawn-from-life tales.

from recording, ending in 2007 with Join the Parade. Inspired by the horrific events following Hurricane Katrina and his own near fatal shooting just weeks before, Parade is his most moving and critically acclaimed record to date. About his album Listening Booth: 1970, a collection of reimagined classics from that seminal year in music, Rolling Stone said, “Cohn has one of rock’s most soulful croons – a rich immediately recognizable tenor that makes these songs his own.” In late 2014, Cohn released “The Coldest Corner in the World,” the title song to the documentary Tree Man and his first original song released in more than seven years.

Cohn followed up his platinum-selling debut with two more releases in the 1990s, at which point TIME magazine called him “one of the honest, emotional voices we need in this decade” and Bonnie Raitt declared, “Marc is one of the most soulful, talented artists I know. I love his songs, he’s an incredible singer, and I marvel On March 25, 2016, in celebration of the 25th at his ability to mesmerize every audience he anniversary of his platinum-selling debut plays for.” album, Marc proudly released Careful What You Raitt, James Taylor, David Crosby, Graham Nash Dream: Lost Songs and Rarities and the bonus and Patty Griffin all made guest appearances on album, Evolution of a Record, featuring neverCohn’s early records for Atlanta, as his reputation before-heard songs and demos dating back to as an artist and performer continued to grow. years before his debut album and the Grammy In 1998, Cohn took a decade-long sabbatical Award that followed. THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in the 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st. Since the original members first sang together as kids at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the late 1930s (including Jimmy Carter, who leads the group today), the band has preserved through seven decades to become one of the most recognized and decorated roots music groups in the world.

“cross over” to secular music, also saw their audiences dwindle. However, the Blind Boys persevered and their time came again, starting in the 1980s with their starring role in the Obie Award-winning musical “The Gospel at Colonus,” which began a new chapter in their incredible history. It’s almost unbelievable that a group of blind, AfricanAmerican singers, who started out touring during a time of whites-only bathrooms, restaurants and hotels, went on to win five Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and to perform at the White House for three different presidents.

Touring throughout the South during the Jim Crow era of the 1940s and 1950s, the Blind Boys flourished thanks to their unique sound, which blended the close harmonies of early jubilee gospel with the more fervent improvisations of hard gospel. In the early 1960s, the band sang at benefits for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and were a part of the soundtrack to the Civil Rights movement. But as the years passed, gospel fans started to drift away and follow the many singers who had originated in the church but were now recording secular popular music. And the Blind Boys, who refused many offers to

Few would have expected them to still be going strong - stronger than ever, even - so many years after they first joined voices, but they’ve proved as productive and as musically ambitious in recent years as they did in the beginning. In 2001, they released Spirit of the Century on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label, mixing traditional church tunes with songs by Tom Waits and the Rolling Stones, and won the first of their Grammy Awards. The next year they backed Gabriel on his album Up and joined him on a world tour, although a bigger break may have come when David Simon chose their cover of Waits’ “Way Down in the Hole” as the theme

NEW SHANGHAI CIRCUS Chinese Acrobats Tumbling Through History The Chinese acrobatic tradition dates back to 700 B.C.; that’s over 2,000 years of tumbling, balancing and juggling. Ancient stone carvings, earthen pottery and early written work trace the ancestry of today’s spectacular acts. Relics tell the tales of famous acrobats like Confucius’ father, who is believed to have lifted a pair of 1,000-pound city gates to let an army storm through.

EDDIE PALMIERI Known as one of the finest pianists of the past 50 years, Eddie Palmieri is a bandleader, arranger and composer of salsa and Latin jazz. His playing skillfully fuses the rhythm of his Puerto Rican heritage with the complexity of his jazz influences: Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner as well as his older brother, Charlie Palmieri. Palmieri’s parents emigrated from Ponce, Puerto Rico to New York City in 1926. Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in the Bronx, Palmieri learned to play the piano at an early age, and at 13, he joined his uncle’s orchestra, playing timbales. Palmieri’s professional career as a pianist took off with various bands in the early 1950s including Eddie Forrester, Johnny Segui’s, and the popular Tito Rodriguez Orchestra. In 1961, Palmieri formed his own band, La Perfecta, which featured an unconventional front line of trombones rather than the trumpets customary in Latin orchestras. This created an innovative sound that mixed American jazz into AfroCaribbean rhythms, surprising critics and fans alike. Palmieri disbanded La Perfecta in 1968 to pursue different musical endeavors, though he would return to the band’s music in the 2000s. Palmieri perfected his arranging skills in the 1970’s releasing several impressive recordings that reflected his unorthodox approach to music. His unconventional style would once again surprise critics and fans with the 1970 release entitled Harlem River Drive. This recording was the first to merge what were categorized as “Black” and “Latin” music into a free-form sound that encompassed elements of salsa, funk, soul and jazz. In 1975, Palmieri won the first-ever Grammy for Best Latin Recording for The Sun of Latin Music (he’s won ten Grammys altogether to date), including two for his influential recording with Tito Puente, Obra Maestra/Masterpiece.

In addition to the Grammys, Palmieri has received numerous honors: Eubie Blake Award (1991); Most Exciting Latin Performance, presented by the BBC in London (2002); Yale University’s Chubb Fellowship, usually reserved for international heads of state, but given to Palmieri in recognition of his work building communities through music (2002); Harlem Renaissance Award (2005); Jay McShann Lifetime Achievement Award (2008), induction into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame (2008). A year later, the Library of Congress added Palmieri’s composition “Azucar Pa’ Ti” to the National Recording Registry, which at the time only included 300 compositions documenting the history of all of recorded music history in the U.S. With his widely popular eight-and-ahalf minute “Azucar Pa’ Ti” Palmieri changed the format of the recording industry, breaking the three-and-a-half minute barrier imposed by the recording industry. In 2012, Palmieri continued to innovate, celebrating 75 years with new music included in the original score for a documentary co-directed by Bobbito Garcia called “Doin it in the Park” that explores the cultural influence of playground basketball on sports and music. Palmieri’s music recorded for the documentary will be released as a soundtrack in November of 2013. This was Eddie’s first time recording his own new music since winning back-to-back Grammys in 2005 and 2006. The songs featured in the documentary are part of Eddie’s next fulllength album, Sabiduria, which will be released in 2014. Sabiduria is a fusion of Jazz, funk and Latin fused with Afro-world rhythms.

In 2013, Eddie Palmieri was awarded the coveted Jazz Master award by the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA). MUMMENSCHANZ: YOU & ME Since its successful three year run on Broadway, Swiss based theater troupe MUMMENSCHANZ has pioneered a new form of visual theater that has since spawned multiple new genres reclaiming their legacy. MUMMENSCHANZ has been dazzling audiences worldwide for more than 45 years. By creating a playful yet compelling experience through the inventive use of shadow, light, and creative manipulation of objects, MUMMENSCHANZ offers timeless insight on the human condition. The result is a visually stunning spectacle that transcends cultural barriers and sparks the imagination. The 2017-2018 season will see a brand new creation, “you & me” by the visionary MUMMENSCHANZ troupe with new performers bringing to life the large scale masks you’ve grown to love; as well as reviving a historic tradition of acrobatics. The show will also include some of the classic sketches that have stood the test of time. “you & me” will focus on the love and mutual joy the audiences and performers experience in MUMMENSCHANZ’s one of a kind theatrical performances, hence the title “you & me”. The MUSICIANS OF SILENCE, their soundtrack is the awe, joy and laughter their audiences experience and have grown to love for the last 45 years. The company will continue this tradition with their fresh, brand new show, touring the United States, for the first time ever in the Spring of 2018.

BIOS Floriana Frassetto (Swiss) studied at Academia A. Fersen in Rome from 1967 to 1968. She completed her training as an actress attending a school in mime and acrobatics at Roy Bosier's Teatro Studio. She then worked with the company of Roy Bosier in several school productions that toured Italy. The idea of founding MUMMENSCHANZ resulted from meeting, in late 1971, Andres Bossard and Bernie Schürch – two young Swiss clowns called Before and Lost that performed a partially spoken show. Floriana became the third member of the new company, and together they co-created the repertoire of MUMMENSCHANZ, converting the spoken numbers to masked visuals. Floriana has performed on tour worldwide for the last 45 years. She feels herself an artisan of phantasy and has always been motivated to construct new shapes along with Bernie. Since Bernie’s departure in 2012 she has been tormented by the challenge of creating a new show, which she has now done with plenty of new ideas. That has been possible thanks to the collaboration with Tina Kronis and Richard Alger. She is very happy with her fellow performers and is looking forward to the coming tours together. Among other experiences were the choreography and the costumes for Giancarlo Sbragia’s “Faust” and André Heller’s musical “Body and Soul”, and an artistic collaboration with Isabelle Baudet for the children musical “Oliver Twist” in Lausanne (Switzerland). She is the artistic director of MUMMENSCHANZ. Sara Francesca Hermann (Swiss) was born in 1985 in Samedan and grew up trilingual with Romanesque, German and Italian. She is a trained primary school teacher. Afterwards she completed a three years course at Comart, a school of physical theatre in Zurich. She won the 2009/10 physical theatre studentship award from Migros Kulturprozent. Since 2010 she has worked as a freelance theatre artist in various productions. She is a co-founder of „Paula fliegt“ and has had several engagements in theatre and music projects in Switzerland and abroad. In May 2015, Sara became a member of the MUMMENSCHANZ company. Oliver Pfulg (Swiss) was born in 1985 and grew up in Hombrechtikon. After his initial education as a draughtsman, he attended Comart, the physical theatre school in Zurich for three years, where he graduated in 2010. Since then he has had different engagements (a. o Opera House Zurich, flowingdancecompany, MärliMusicalTheater). Oliver is also a founding member of the street theatre group „Paula fliegt“. In 2015 he created – together with Lena Wälly – an original play „apropos“. Since May 2015, Oliver has been a member of the MUMMENSCHANZ company.

THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 2018 Christa Barrett (Swiss) was born in Fribourg, 1990. At the age of 17, she joined the „Zirkus Chnopf“ and the „Cirque de Loin” for three years. Following this, she entered the Accademia Teatro Dimitri in Verscio. During her studies she twice wins the physical theatre studentship award from Migros Kulturprozent. In 2014 she received her Bachelor in Physical Theatre. Since then, Christa has worked with different theatre companies including: „Poyo Furioso“ directed by Hermes Gaido, „Fiorenza Ensemble“ directed by Eveline Ratering and „Commedia Origen Festival“ directed by Fabrizio Pestilli. Since summer 2016 Christa has been a member of the MUMMENSCHANZ company. Kevin Blaser (Swiss) born in 1990, is a young artist from Ticino. In his early age he showed a strong interest in movement and art. He stood out in gymnastics and in skateboarding in which he finds a companion with whom he travels the world. Passionate for music, he perfected his skills in percussion and drums, with which he continues to play in various bands. Through theatre he discovered a means for full expression of himself and entered the school for physical theatre Accademia Teatro Dimitri, where he obtained his Bachelor in 2015. He played in different theatre and cinema productions as „Gilgamesh” (from Patrizia Barbiuiani), „Gotthard 2016” (from Volker Hesse), „Tutti Giù” (from Niccolò Castelli). In July 2016 he started his journey with the MUMMENSCHANZ company. Eric Sauge (Swiss) is the Technical Director of the company. With nearly 10 years of experience in the entertainment business, he now specializes in lighting and machinery effects. Employment by large organizations provided him with world-wide travel. Through his experience and many trips abroad he acquired solid knowledge in technical and team management. Back in Switzerland he continued to train in the field of lighting for events such as theater and television, in which he mainly occupied the roles of console operator and project manager. In 2014 he met Mummenschanz in Lausanne, and wishing to return to the theatre scene, he joined them as their Technical Director.

CHARLES ESTEN AND CLARE BOWEN CHARLES ESTEN Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Charles “Chip” Esten grew up in Alexandria, VA. After starting his acting career in Los Angeles, he was pleased to make his theatrical debut in London, portraying Buddy Holly in the hit West End musical Buddy. In that role, he was honored to perform for H.R.M Queen Elizabeth and then, for President and Mrs. George H.W. Bush at both The Kennedy Center and The White House.

he has starred in the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 “Nashville in Concert” tours with sold out shows across the US and the UK.

He is a featured artist on the ten very successful Nashville soundtracks that have been released to date, two of which include “I Know How to Love You Now” which he co-wrote with Deana Carter. The act unexpectedly went viral, eliciting thousands of positive responses from all over the globe. Bowen was overwhelmed with joy, but startled by the attention and reportedly retreated to the ceiling until her team got her down with a broom. “I have come to terms with the fact that one person cannot save the world alone,” Clare admits, “But you can make little corners of it better. If you’re given any kind of blessing like what Nashville is to me, you must use your powers for good.” Bowen plays shows between shoots, touring the U.S. with fellow Nashville actor Charles Esten, and her singer / songwriter fiancé, Brandon Robert Young. Once an introverted child, Bowen has blossomed into a ferocious performer with a penchant for flying off the stage to dance with the audience in full sparkle mode. DAUGHTRY “It takes a lot of time to accept who you are,” says Chris Daughtry. “You shave off the persona that you thought people expected, stop worrying about what anyone is going to think. You start to be comfortable with who you are onstage and off, and that all blends together. I think I finally know who I am as a person.” As the frontman for the band bearing his name, Daughtry has become one of the most visible and consistent rock & roll torchbearers of the 21st Century. Since rising to prominence on the fifth season of American Idol, he has released four albums, all of which reached the Billboard Top Ten and have combined sales over 8 million copies in the U.S. Daughtry’s self-titled debut was the bestselling album of 2007, which contained four Top Twenty hit singles including the Grammynominated smash “It’s Not Over.” Leave This Town also reached Number One in 2009, while 2011’s Break the Spell was certified gold. His group’s most recent record, 2013’s Baptized, featured the platinum-selling “Waiting for Superman,” which the singer points to as a turning point in his songwriting. “It was a nice hybrid of where we had been and where we’re going, and it opened my eyes a bit,” says Daughtry. “Everything was so serious and doom and gloom, and ‘You broke my heart,’ but we never saw ourselves as those people outside the music—onstage we were always joking around. That helped me wrap my head around the fact that we can be lighthearted and still be us. And that really changed the way I approach the songs in general.”

challenge himself creatively. He has collaborated with artists from Timbaland to Vince Gill to Carlos Santana and took on the role of Judas Iscariot in the 2016 live television performance of The Passion, and even fulfilled a lifelong dream by drawing the cover of a Batman comic which was rated one of the top 25 covers of the year by BatmanNews.com. This kind of ambition has also extended to the work of Daughtry the band. “We always try to push ourselves outside of the familiar parameters,” says the singer. “If it’s anything like we’ve done before, then it’s not good enough for the record. “If you look at the groups doing it for twentyplus years,” he continues, “they were always changing their style, testing the water, going off the rails from what people expected— Zeppelin, Elton, Prince, they never did the same record twice. So there’s always that effort to push yourself as an artist, but I never want to abandon that sense of melody and sense of something that people can grab onto, whether it conjures up memories or helps them through a tough time. That’s what I love about music, when it makes me feel something.”

As the band continues work on its fifth album (which Daughtry describes in its early stages as having a “bluesy, almost rootsy undertone to it”), they look to contemporaries like Maroon 5 and Train as examples of acts able to maintain their relevance while rock & roll faces an uphill struggle in the mass media. “Those guys are inspirational, showing that you can come back and have a strong presence, even if what you’re known for doing is having a hard Daughtry and his band have been performing time,” he says. together for over a decade. “Like anything with a ten year relationship, you know more Ten years after launching with a massive about each other than you do most of your splash, Chris Daughtry claims that he and the family,” says Chris Daughtry. “It’s a love-hate band have grown the most on stage, and that thing—you get sick of being around them, it’s altered his whole sense of his work. “When but after two weeks at home you’re ready to we first came out, I’d only known what I’d seen,” get back out on the road and do it again. The he says. “I didn’t know how to be vulnerable, fan base really keeps us alive. That’s the key with no pretense. Now it’s walk onstage and, ingredient to keeping a band together—that’s especially in our acoustic shows, just be flatout honest and open. It’s really helped me the gasoline, and without it you can’t run.” realize that’s actually what fans want—they One thing that has kept the fire burning for want 100 percent honesty and feeling like Daughtry has been the need to constantly they got to know you better.”

STRAIGHT NO CHASER If the phrase “male a cappella group conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses... think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. Straight No Chaser is the real deal, the captivating sound of nine unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense... and with a sense of humor. On the road, Straight No Chaser has built a reputation as an unforgettable live act.

I think you have to change it up every round. My mantra is retreat and attack in another direction, which I’ve done twice. Now I'm going to do it again.” Foster’s first round was as a studio musician, arranger, and recording artist. His second round was becoming one of the most successful songwriters and record producers in history — shepherding albums that have collectively sold in the hundreds of millions. This period of his four-decade career also found him creating The David Foster Foundation and volunteering his time and talent to over 400 charities, as well as becoming a household name as a performer throughout Asia where he tours annually. For his third round, Foster is gearing up to take on Broadway with several projects. These include writing the music for a new musical about the iconic, animated character Betty Boop, which will be directed by Tony Awardwinner Jerry Mitchell. He is writing the music for a musical based on the Amy Bloom novel and New York Times bestseller Lucky Us, directed by Tony Award-nominee Sheryl Kaller. Foster is also developing a scripted narrative one-man show based on the story of his career that he will perform himself. As one of the most illustrious composers of our time, Foster’s skill set of creating hits, writing indelible melodies, and building dramatic moments, has primed him for this third round. “I think Broadway and I are a perfect fit,” he says. “The story becomes the co-writer. It’s a new adventure and creative outlet for me that I’ve always believed I could do and now it’s become a reality. It’s also exciting because, as a producer, I’ve spent 35 years in a room with no windows, churning out music. Now I plan to immerse myself in New York theater culture and learn the ropes slowly, and I’m not afraid of that.” Foster seems constitutionally incapable of resting on his laurels, and his relentless drive has propelled him throughout his career. Few other individuals can claim to have their fingerprints on more major moments in all of popular music than David Foster. He has created hit songs and award-winning gold and platinum albums

for a diverse array of artists including Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Josh Groban, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Diana Krall, Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Seal, Chaka Khan, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Chicago, Hall & Oates, Brandy, ’N Sync, Boz Scaggs, and Gloria Estefan. He has escorted singers who have straddled both pop and classical styles like Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban into the mainstream. He has created culture-defining soundtracks for blockbuster films like The Bodyguard, Urban Cowboy, and St. Elmo’s Fire; and crafted timeless holiday classics, including perennial best-sellers like Josh Groban’s Noel, Michael Bublé’s Christmas, Celine Dion’s These Are Special Times, Rod Stewart’s Merry Christmas Baby, Andrea Bocelli’s My Christmas, and Mary J. Blige’s A Mary Christmas. For his remarkable work, Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including three for Producer of the Year, an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe, and racked up three Oscar nominations for “Best Original Song.” He has also earned a reputation as a keen spotter of new talent, playing a key role in the discovery and career launches of Celine Dion, Josh Groban, and Michael Bublé. In 2008 and 2011, Foster stepped out as performer in his own right as the host of “Foster & Friends” — two star-studded concert events in Las Vegas that celebrate the music from Foster’s unparalleled catalog. The shows were filmed for Great Performance on PBS and Foster’s Hit Man and The Hit Man Returns became PBS’ highestrated pledge drive shows of the decade. Foster is also a household name as a performer throughout Asia where he fills arenas on his frequent tours. In 2015, Foster became a celebrity judge on the smash hit TV show Asia’s Got Talent. Billed as the biggest TV show in the world, it is broadcast throughout Asia into 20 countries. Foster also recently became the new Global Grand Brand Ambassador for AirAsia. “In Asia, audiences believe that the person who writes and produces the songs is as important as the person who sings them,” Foster says. “So when you play a song that you’ve written and the entire 10,000-seat arena sings every word, that’s pretty thrilling.” Foster plans to expand his touring into Europe, the U.S., and Russia in the coming year.

FRIDAY, APRIL 6, 2018 It’s not surprising that Foster became a consummate performer. Born in Victoria, British Columbia, he began studying piano at age four. As the story goes, his mother was dusting the family piano, hit one of the keys, and was shocked when David correctly called out, “That’s an E!”, thus discovering he had perfect pitch. The son of a maintenance yard superintendent and a homemaker, Foster has chronicled his life in the highly regarded, bestselling autobiography Hit Man. Foster has made charitable work his life’s other priority. Meeting with a young girl from his hometown who was awaiting a liver transplant had a profound impact and led him to create The David Foster Foundation in 1986. Its mission is to provide financial support to Canadian families with children in need of live-saving organ transplants, along with a new focus on organ donor awareness. Four years ago, the Foundation had a mandate raise a $30 million endowment. “We’ve moved that goalpost to $50 million and I think we’ll get there by the end of 2017,” Foster says. He has also volunteered his time and talent to over 400 charities over the past two decades, including the annual Muhammad Ali Celebrity Fight Night, The Andre Agassi Foundation, and Carousel of Hope. Tapping into his vast

network of friends and superstar artists, Foster has enabled these events to raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. “The gift of music has brought me many rewards,” he says. “What better way to honor those gifts than to pay it forward. It’s not just a responsibility, it’s a must.” Foster has also been rewarded with professional honors, including being inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2002, The Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2007, The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010, and the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in the U.S., also in 2010. In 2013, Foster received his star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. It is located on Vine Street in front of the iconic Capitol Records building, adjacent to the stars of his musical heroes — John, Paul, George and Ringo — a thrill for the self-described “biggest Beatles fan on the planet.” The location is doubly meaningful as Capitol was the label that signed Foster’s band Skylark in 1971. Their hit “Wildflower” became a Top 10 hit and launched Foster on his unending road to success. Reflecting upon receiving a star on the Walk of Fame, Foster says, “One hundred years from now, my great-grandchildren will go, ‘Hey, there’s my great-grandpa,’ and having a star next to The Beatles…outside the building where I first got signed…that’s perfect.”
