Co-ed, K-8 independent education in the heart of Morristown, NJ

A welcome from our President Happy 80th birthday to MPAC! Mayo Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit organization, has been at the heart of arts and entertainment in Morristown since it first opened as the single screen Community Theatre in 1937. Eighty years later, it is an honor and a privilege to be part of a community that is committed to sustaining the legacy that Walter Reade originally founded. Through your support, this magnificent historic venue has helped to create wonderful experiences and memories for so many; memories that we continue to share with our family and friends through many generations. As part of our mission, we proudly continue the tradition of giving back, offering enriching programs that serve the public, often at no cost. Be on the lookout throughout the year as we announce free lectures, movies, concerts on the mainstage, performances on the plaza and events throughout the community. We hope you will take advantage of these diverse and exciting opportunities. Education and outreach are integral parts of our mission. MPAC brings the arts into schools, community centers, nursing homes and hospitals – bringing joy, inspiring hope, and instilling a sense of creativity and community to students in schools lacking arts programs and to those unable to travel to the Theatre. MPAC’s Miracle Project classes for those with special needs, and our relaxed performances on the main stage, are perfect examples of how the arts can truly became a transformative experience in someone’s life. It is the goal of our entire organization to create an accessible and inclusive environment that offers something for everyone. Thank you for supporting us and for joining us again this season. We are thrilled to continue the tradition of offering memorable experiences, this year, and in the next eighty years. Warm Regards,

Allison Larena President & CEO

A welcome from our Board Chairman Mayo Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit arts organization, contributes to the well-being and economic health of the community we serve. Earlier this year, Americans for the Arts, a national nonprofit arts advocacy group, completed a study of the economic impact of the arts locally and nationally in 2015. The study indicates that communities that support the arts and culture not only enhance their quality of life—they also invest in their economic well-being. Working with Morris Arts and Art Pride New Jersey, the study provides compelling evidence that the nonprofit arts and culture sector is a $31.8 million industry in Morris County—one that supports nearly 1,000 full-time equivalent jobs and generates $3.2 million annually in local and state government revenue. Whether serving the local community or out-of-town visitors, a vibrant arts and culture industry helps local businesses thrive. Unlike most industries, the arts leverage significant event-related spending by their audiences. Nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, which spent $15.8 million during 2015, leveraged a remarkable $16 million in additional spending by their audiences—spending that pumped vital revenue into restaurants, hotels, retail stores, parking garages, and other local businesses. As the largest arts organization in the county, our economic impact alone has been calculated at over $15 million. MPAC is proud to be a valuable community partner. As we look toward the future, we hope to meet the growing needs of our community and be the central resource for entertainment and arts education that makes Morristown one of the best communities in New Jersey to work, live and raise a family. We appreciate your support in helping us achieve this goal and hope that you will continue to recognize the value of Mayo Performing Arts Center in your community. Sincerely,

Joseph M. Goryeb Chairman, Board of Trustees

Miracles Continue to Happen at MPAC Autism and Special Needs Programs Continue to Expand

New Jersey historian John T. Cunningham often described the revival of MPAC as “The Miracle on South Street.” In January 2017, new miracles began to take place in MPAC’s education studios every Thursday afternoon with the launch of The Miracle Project. Those miracles became evident on the evening of June 6, when students from MPAC’s inaugural Miracle Project classes took the stage for their final session open performance in front of family and friends, and everyone in the theatre shared a special moment of sheer joy. The Miracle Project is an evidenced-based, award-winning program that uses music, dance and theatre to bring out the best of children with autism. Its goal is to provide children with tools to build communication, social skills, self-esteem through inclusive theater and to become part of a performing arts community. When MPAC decided to establish a special needs program within its Performing Arts School, Education Director Cathy Roy was determined to create one that would be in line with the school’s philosophy to serve each child, build their selfesteem and give every participant an individual experience. The Miracle Project made for an ideal match. MPAC found its kindred spirit in the Los Angeles based program, established by Elaine Hall and chronicled in the Emmy Award winning documentary Autism the Musical. “MPAC and The Miracle Project are so aligned in the way we approach the arts that it was such a natural fit,” said Ms. Hall.

The Miracle Project’s arrival at MPAC comes at a time when a staggering 2.5% of children in the State are diagnosed with autism, considerably higher than the national average of 1.5%. Two 22-week courses for children ages 9-15 began in January 2017. One course was offered for children who required individual aides and featured neuro-typical “peer mentor” students who volunteered to undergo the program alongside their peers with autism. The second course was designed for students who do not require individual aides, along with 10 volunteer students. “This wasn’t just about singing and performing, but also about learning social skills, how to make a friend, gain confidence and become part of something awesome,” said Jenny Boeckel, MPAC Education Manager, who participated in the program as a teacher. Every parent and every teacher wants their child to feel special, included and important, and MPAC’s Miracle Project’s Classes delivered on that promise of giving them a wonderful experience. “For an hour each week, my son got a chance to participate in a class he loves,” said Elle, a mother of one of the students. As the only program in New Jersey that is certified to use The Miracle Project’s methodology, MPAC has ambitious plans to grow the program to meet the needs of the autism community. This fall, MPAC has doubled the program, expanding to four classes and is looking for ways to develop programs for adults with autism. In addition, the Theatre continues to offer “relaxed performances” for families to enjoy an entertainment experience together. Major support for The Miracle Project at MPAC this 2017/2018 season has been provided by Bruce Jacobs and Ken Levy of Jacobs Levy Equity Management. Additional support was provided by Mary and David Cobb, Nicholas and Elizabeth DeAngelo, John and Kristin Hyland, The Paragano Family Foundation, and by Starlight Ball 2017 Fund-A-Need Donors. For more information about MPAC’s Miracle Project program, class registration and to view a video of the program in action, go to https://www.mayoarts.org/ education/the-miracle-project Featured in April in The Starlight Gallery The Calais School (through May 3) The Calais School is a state approved private non-profit special education school in Whippany that serves children with special needs grade K-12 plus. The art exhibit will include pieces from students in the elementary school as well as high school and 12 plus program. The pieces are an assortment of mixed media paintings on canvas, block prints and drawings.

ONE NIGHT OF QUEEN Gary Mullen (Lead Vocals) has been a lifelong Queen fan and has always been a keen singer. His career as Freddie started in 2000, when his wife and his mother secretly applied to the Granada TV show Stars in Their Eyes. Gary won the overall Live Grand Final, polling 864,838 votes, more than double the runner up and setting the all time record for votes on the show. Gary is featured in the Stars in Their Eyes video, CD and book and has represented the UK on Euro Stars in Their Eyes. After the television experience Gary performed as a solo artist but immediately started to receive rave reviews and was encouraged by the audience reaction therefore in 2002 he created One Night of Queen and formed his band The Works. Since then One Night of Queen have gone from strength to strength and are one of the hardest working bands in the land. For the last five years they have consistently performed over 150 shows per year in a variety of countries. Gary was personally invited by Brian May to attend the Queen & Paul Rodgers show in Cardiff and was thrilled to be introduced to Brian backstage after the show. For the first time in Gary’s life he was left speechless by the great man. Gary has recorded various voiceovers for radio, television and computer games. He has recorded an album of original material with long term song writing partner Barry Kelly called “Blood, Sweat and Beers” which is available to purchase on iTunes. Gary keeps himself in shape by lifting weights on the road and also enjoys practising yoga. When he does get time off Gary enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. Having already conquered the UK, Europe, USA and New Zealand, Gary and One Night of Queen are looking to explore new opportunities in South America, Asia and Australia in the near future. Billy Moffat (Bass Guitar) started playing bass at the tender age of 10 and is now firmly established as a quality player who is a popular choice for session work. Billy along with Davie Brockett played on the Frankie Miller tribute CD on the track “As Good As Gone.” Billy lists his musical influences as Rush, Muse, Steeley Dan, Jimi Hendrix, Chic and many, many more. When Billy is at home he likes nothing more than cooking in his kitchen accompanied with a bottle of red wine. Billy has recorded a

solo album, which is available to buy now on iTunes. The album is called BSides, and features Gary Mullen on 3 tracks. Jon Halliwell (Drums) started playing around with drums aged 14, he took it up seriously after his mother got him a drum kit for Christmas. At 15 Jon and his neighbour Gary Mullen started their first band, the first rehearsal (in Gary's bedroom) was cut short by the police because of excess volume during a spirited rendition of Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’. As well as playing live in many places around the world he has also spent time working with a theatre production of a rock-opera. He has done extensive recording work with various rock bands and is featured on several albums, singles and music videos. Although recording in a studio is great fun – Jon says that playing live & loud is where he is most at home. Jon lists one of the highlights of his career was standing on the Great Wall of China and realising the reason he was there was because he hits things with bits of wood. When he’s not rocking out he likes to spend time with family and friends or watching Kung fu movies. Malcolm Gentles (Keyboards) was brought up in a musical family and started playing the violin at the age of 5. He went on to study at the acclaimed Chethams School Of Music in Manchester when he was just 9 years old. It was after his time at Chethams, whilst at music college that Malcolm developed his interest in piano - studying jazz, arranging and popular music whilst also gigging as a drummer in clubs and theatres in the evenings. Malcolm formed his own band in 1990 and gigs have taken him around the world, backing artists and performing in their own right on most of the major cruise lines. Alongside running his own band Malcolm has always kept time aside for other projects - freelancing as a keyboard player/musical director and studio musician. He has had the pleasure of working with many varied artists and has been involved with musical projects for the BBC, Yorkshire Television and Channel 4. Malcolm has also had the privilege to perform for the Prince of Wales, the Princess Royal and the Duchess of Kent. When he’s not touring he just enjoys his time at home - a few glasses of wine with friends and plenty of good food.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11, 2018 David Brockett (Guitars) was brought up in Glasgow and started playing guitar at the age of 15. His work encompasses great breadth and depth from jingles for Radio and TV to music for Film and Video games. His work was also included in a promotional multimedia CD for the University of Glasgow! In 1998 he began Planet 8, an original project which now includes a band, an album, a live show, a website and has resulted in a cult following in the U.K and the Far East. He was mentioned in Total Guitar magazine as One of

Scotland’s best guitarists July 2001. Davie has done a great deal of session work with various artists and production companies including BBC Scotland, Craig Armstrong, ITV, SKY, SONY and various radio stations nationwide. Much of the music from his guitar instrumental album Planet 8 has been used on TV Shows and commercials worldwide and is available to purchase through itunes etc. Davie has his own production company in Glasgow and recently completed the music for BAFTA award winning TV series Raven.

BONEY JAMES It had been a full quarter-century since a young saxophonist and composer released his debut recording as a leader, Trust. On September 1, 2017, Boney James released his 16th album, this one titled Honestly. If you sense a direct line between those titles, you’ve already come a long way toward understanding what motivates the four-time GRAMMY nominee and multi-platinum-selling musician. “I’m fighting the good fight to be my own artist and not be pigeonholed,” says the genreblurring James. “With a record’s title I always try to find something that will communicate the feeling I get when I listen to it. The feeling I get with this music is a sense of sincerity and intimacy. The word ‘honestly’ really reflects how I aspire to live my life and create my music. One of the great things about music is how powerful it is. It can totally transport people. These are interesting times we are living in and the one thing I can do with the skills that I have is to make music that evokes a feeling and takes people somewhere… to do what I can to try and make the world a more pleasant place.” Honestly follows futuresoul, James’ 2015 release which spent eleven weeks at #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart. The New York Times raved, “Boney James performs with panache… His arc as a soloist is emotional…he can paint a scene.” Honestly, says James, is quite different sounding than the previous record. “It’s more exposed,” he says of the 10-track collection. “Some of the arrangements are not as dense. A number of the songs have a more buoyant, cheerful, happy quality to them.” James produced the record and co-wrote all but one track, his interpretation of the Johnny Mercer-Hoagy Carmichael classic ‘Skylark.’ James recruited collaborators and musicians whose work he admires, including charttopping vocalists/co-writers Avery*Sunshine (on the title track) and Eric Roberson (on ‘If I Can’t Hold You’). Each track on Honestly reflects a different side of James’ musical personality. “Songs like ‘Kicks’ or ‘Up All Night’ are much more boisterous sounding than the last couple of records,” he says. “Then there’s ‘Skylark,’ a song that I have always loved…a standard which I’ve never recorded before. The track ‘Honestly’ (and first Urban Adult single) featuring Avery*Sunshine is straight up R&B.” Regarding Avery, James says, “I heard her at a festival, we were both playing and then I heard her #1 single ‘Call My Name’ on the radio. I was instantly a fan and just waiting for the right song for us to collaborate.” First instrumental single ‘Tick Tock,’ one of four songs co-written and co-produced with Jairus

Mozee (Anthony Hamilton, Robin Thicke) is one of several on the album featuring a horn arrangement by Jerry Hey, who worked on Michael Jackson’s greatest hits, amongst others. “It’s a very funky track with an insistent groove and the arrangement goes places you don’t expect it to go,” says James. Although each track on the album has its own definitive feel, James points directly toward some of his greatest influences as having provided inspiration. “I think about Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan and Earth, Wind & Fire,” he says, also mentioning such iconic R&B and contemporary jazz artists as the Brothers Johnson, Tower of Power and Grover Washington Jr. as having impacted him. “These are the bands that I grew up loving and the thing that they had was this method of arranging so the music is a character itself. That’s something I aspire to create on my records. The bass line can be a hook, or a horn line or keyboard riff that you sing in your head—that’s what I’m trying to create on the record. A tapestry of sounds that puts you in another world.” James plays all of the tenor and soprano saxophone parts on Honestly and contributes keyboards and drum programming to several of the tracks. But his career might have turned out a lot differently had a music store in his native New Rochelle, New York, had his first choice in stock the day he walked inside. “I wanted to play trumpet but when we went to the store to rent a trumpet all they had were clarinets, so I went home with a clarinet. Two years later I guess I was the best clarinet player in a band full of clarinets and the teacher wanted a sax player so he leaned on me to pick up the saxophone. I didn’t want to do it because it was a much heavier case I’d have to carry. But as soon as I switched I loved it and it pretty quickly became my favorite thing to do. It still is!” By the time he entered his teens, James was gigging with bands, and he turned pro at 19. He apprenticed as a sideman for artists like Morris Day and the Isley Brothers, picking up pointers on how to present himself onstage and off, and didn’t cut his first album under his own name until he was 30. The independently released Trust led immediately to a major label deal and a string of increasingly successful recordings and live dates. His skill as a performer as well as a recording artist garnered this notice from the Boston Globe, “James swaggered across the stage like a blacktop hero draining treys on an overmatched opponent. He even weaved his way through the audience, never missing a beat and all but daring the crowd not to have a good time.”

THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 2018 Over the years, James has racked up sales of more than three million records, four RIAA gold albums, four GRAMMY nominations, a Soul Train Award, nominations for two NAACP Image Awards and 10 CDs atop Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. In 2009, Billboard named him one of the Top 3 Contemporary Jazz Artists Of The Decade along with Kenny G and Norah Jones. With Honestly, as with futuresoul and the GRAMMY-nominated The Beat before it, Boney James is making some of the most stellar,

wholly realized music of his career. “I’ve just grown up, personally and musically,” he says. “I’m a lot calmer now when I approach making music and have more confidence. I’m a “give110 percent” kind of person and I’m enjoying the process more now. I think that comes out in the music. Maybe that’s why this new record is so much fun to listen to. There are parts on the record that still make me smile.” James lives in Los Angeles with his wife of 32 years, Actress/Director Lily Mariye and has written scores for her film projects.

ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK Engelbert Humperdinck never wanted to be a singer. A career in music, yes, but he was extraordinarily shy. The youngest boy of a family of ten children originally from Leicester, England, he grew up in Madras, India, where his father was stationed during World War II. Engelbert’s childhood was dominated by the love of his parents and his brothers and sisters. He knew he could sing harmonies, but the power of his own voice came as a surprise to him and other people. “It’s just so loud, but I discovered I can be tender with it at the same time.”

Engelbert entered the world as Arnold George Dorsey. At the age of 11, he started studying music and playing the saxophone. When he was 17, Engelbert found himself playing at a pub that sponsored a singing contest. Goaded by his friends to enter, he put down his sax and

Engelbert’s music has transcended time and his voice still continues to reach out to people now – serving to transport and inspire, to embrace and to provoke feelings and emotions… ingredients that are no doubt the essence of his long-lasting success.

Gerry Dorsey was very popular on the UK music circuit and in 1959 he released a single called, “Crazybells/ Mister Music Man” on Decca Records. However, he contracted tuberculosis, which silenced him for six months and nearly ended his rising music career. Upon regaining Like all great icons, he is a man of great his health, Gerry Dorsey knew he had to depth – masculine and loving, shy inside and end his former image to make a comeback uninhibited onstage, prepared to play the sex as a strong, dynamic performer. CHEECH & CHONG Cheech Marin

Tommy Chong

Best known as one half of the hilariously irreverent, satirical, counter-culture, no-holdsbarred duo Cheech and Chong (now back on tour), Cheech Marin is a paradox in the world of entertainment. Cheech is an actor, director, writer, musician, art collector, and humanitarian, a man who has enough talent, humor, and intelligence to do just about anything. He is truly a multi-generational star. To this day, Cheech and Chong films remain the number one weekend video rentals, and Cheech is widely acknowledged as a cultural icon.

Grammy Award winning comedian Tommy Chong is legendary for his invaluable contribution to American counter-culture as part of the iconic comedy duo Cheech & Chong. During their reign, the twosome recorded six gold comedy albums, including the 1973 Grammy winner “Los Cochinos,” and starred in eight films, most of which Chong co-wrote and directed. Tommy began his entertainment career as a musician in a Canadian-based rhythm and blues band. Eventually, he landed a gig with the Vancouvers and co-wrote the band’s 1960’s hit, “Does Your Mama Know About Me.”

Cheech (real name Richard) Marin was born in South Central Los Angeles and met Tommy Chong in Vancouver, British Columbia as a political refugee. The duo moved back to Los Angeles and proved entertainment gold. Six of their albums went gold, four were nominated for Grammys, and Los Cochinos won the 1973 Grammy for Best Comedy Recording. The critically acclaimed duo made a fluid transition to films, starring in eight features together. During a split with Chong, Cheech wrote, directed, and starred in the comedy Born In East L.A.. He has appeared in over 20 films, including his scene-stealing role in Tin Cup . On television, Cheech was a sitcom regular before joining Don Johnson on the highly successful CBS drama, Nash Bridges (1996-2001). He later had a recurring role on the hit NBC show, Lost, and recent guest stints on Rob and Jane the Virgin.

JEREMY CAMP: THE ANSWER TOUR While he feels like he’s “just beginning,” Jeremy Camp has 12 years of accolades and accomplishments as a songwriter and recording artist, including four million albums sold, four RIAA Gold albums, a multiplatinum DVD, three American Music Award nominations and a GRAMMY nomination. He’s been a part of more than 25 tours (headlining 18 of those) in the U.S. and has performed in more than 32 countries. Jeremy describes himself as “a minister who happens to play music as a way to minister.”

Is Jeremy ready to move past those painful chapters of his life? Would he prefer not to talk about them? Not at all. “I always say, ‘It’s a part of my life. It’s not my life.’ It’s not all that I share. But it’s part of what shaped me, and people still go through hard times. And so the scripture says in 2 Corinthians, if we comfort others, we will be then comforted.”

Jeremy often finds God teaches him through song. The first single off the new record, “He Knows,” is one in which God spoke comfort over Jeremy’s past. As he shares in his book I Still Believe, Jeremy lost his first wife to cancer at age 21 and in recent years, lost a baby to miscarriage with his wife, Adrienne. There are a lot of people hurting, and they often turn to Jeremy because of his platform.

“oppression and fear like I’ve never felt in my life.”

The lyrical and biblical depth to Jeremy’s songs reflect years of studying God’s word, in which he gained a foundation from growing up in Over the last year and a half, this ordained a pastor’s home and attending Bible college. minister has experienced a season of artistic Ministry for him is a lifestyle, one in which the growth and musical creativity, evident with whole family, who occasionally joins him on the his new album, I Will Follow. “When I sat down with this record, I just said, ‘God, I feel like I still have a song pertaining to all that. Just give me wisdom.’ I was drawn to the Hebrews 4:15 scripture where it says that we have a high priest that can empathize with our weaknesses. Jesus Christ is our high priest. Jesus is my everything. The whole concept of the song is saying, Listen, in the midst of all these pains and wounds that may come up, He knows. Christ knows every single thing. We have to come to that peace and that rest of just going, ‘Okay, God, you know who I am. Where can I go from your presence? You’re everywhere. You know every part of me. And you know, you’ve been through it.’ And so I think that for me, that is the greatest comfort.”

As the day of the big event approached, intimidating threats and imprisonment warnings targeted the missionaries and Jeremy’s band. Even the local news channel told the public not to come. And yet, 8,000 people still showed up. As the crowd gathered, Jeremy lay on his face crying before God. ‘Lord, I can’t do this,’ he said. ‘This is too much.’ “I realized the dangers of what was happening. In my heart, I wanted to go home and raise my kids; I wanted to grow old with my wife. When I said, ‘I can’t do this,’ the Lord spoke to me and said, ‘Perfect. You finally got it. You can do this.’” The moment was pivotal. “Something clicked,” he said, and he finally grasped a powerful truth. “I had been sharing the scripture all my life, Acts 20:24, where Paul says, ‘I consider my life worth nothing to me;my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.’ And in Galatians, ‘I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.’ It’s just all these scriptures where Paul is saying, I know. It’s all Him.” The name of Jesus went forth at the event, and it was a success. When the group returned home safely, Jeremy had time to reflect. He came home changed, he felt he was at a crossroads, unsure if he should continue to pursue music. “When I got home, I said, ‘Okay, Lord, I’m completely yours. So whatever you have, I’m going to do it 100 percent wholeheartedly, and I’m ready.’”

Some time passed, and he felt God finally telling him, ‘I want you to do this again.’ When the doors opened to continue doing music through Capitol CMG, he went all in. “I knew what I had been called to do: to follow him wholeheartedly.” That’s when the theme of his new record, I Will Follow, emerged. “In the Old Testament when God was talking to the Israelites, they’re just rebellious people, and it says, but Caleb has a different spirit. He followed me wholeheartedly.’ And that’s what I want to do.”

LARRY CARLTON AND JOHN PIZZARELLI Larry Carlton Larry Carlton’s musical story began in Southern California. He picked up his first guitar when he was six years old. He was introduced to jazz in junior high school after hearing The Gerald Wilson Big Band album, Moment of Truth, with guitarist Joe Pass. Larry then became interested in Barney Kessel, Wes Montgomery and the legendary blues guitarist B.B. King. Saxophonist John Coltrane was also a major influence, beginning with Coltrane’s 1962 classic Ballads. In 1968 he recorded his first LP, With A Little Help From My Friends (Uni). The enthusiastic industry response garnered him a place among jingle singers The Going Thing, recording on camera and radio commercials for Ford. Midseason in his second year, he segued to Musical Director for Mrs. Alphabet, an Emmy-nominated children’s show on the same network. It was here that Carlton showcased his acting skills, performing as the show’s co-star, “Larry Guitar.” Calls began to increase significantly as Carlton gained distinction for the unmistakable and often imitated “sweet” sound he delivered with his Gibson ES-335. He also broke new ground with his new trademark volume pedal technique, eloquently displayed in his featured performance on C rusader One with legendary jazz/rock group The Crusaders in 1971. Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark album, the first record she made with a rhythm section, displays his distinctive Technique – a style Mitchell referred to as “fly fishing.” During his tenure with The Crusaders (through 1976), Carlton performed on 13 of their albums, often contributing material. In 1973, Carlton released his second solo project, SinginglPlaying, on Blue Thumb Records aptly titled, as he not only played guitar, but also performed vocals on eight tracks. Carlton’s demand as a session player was now at its zenith, he was constantly featured with stars from every imaginable genre, ranging from Sammy Davis, Jr., and Herb Alpert to Quincy Jones, Paul Anka, Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Jerry Garcia and Dolly Parton. At the same time, he was still performing more than 50 dates a year with The Crusaders. Before he transitioned completely to a solo career, Carlton became one of the most indemand studio musicians of the past three decades. Carlton’s catalog of work includes film soundtracks, television themes and work on more than 100 gold albums.

Ultimately, Carlton began scaling back his session work substantially, while continuing to perform and record with the Crusaders. He shifted his emphasis to the challenges of arranging and producing, and built his own studio-Room 335-in his home. During this period he arranged and produced projects for Barbra Streisand, Joan Baez and Larry Gatlin, as well as producing and co-writing the theme for the hit sitcom Who’s The Boss and co-writing (with Michel Columbier) and arranging the acclaimed movie soundtrack for Against All Odds. Between ’78 and ’84, Larry recorded six solo albums for Warner Bros. Records: Mr. 335: Live In Japan, Friends; Eight Times Up; Sleep Walk; Strikes Twice; Larry Carlton. The latter self-titled album was released hot on the heels of his debut session with rock supergroup Steely Dan. Rolling Stone magazine lists Carlton’s tasty ascent on Steely Dan’s Kid Charlemagne as one of the three best guitar licks in rock music. With more than 3000 studio sessions under his belt by the early 1980s, Carlton had picked up four Grammy nominations. In addition to winning a Grammy (`81) for the theme to “Hill Street Blues” (a collaboration with Mike Post), he also was voted NARAS’s “Most Valuable Player” for three consecutive years. NARAS then named him “Player Emeritus” and retired him from eligibility. In 1985 he was approached by the newly formed MCA Master Series to consider doing an acoustic jazz album. His first release for the new label was Alone, But Never Alone, a consensus No. 1 album on the Radio & Records and Billboard Jazz charts. The twelve months of 1987 brought some of the biggest highlights in Carlton’s solo career. In addition to winning the Grammy for “Minute by Minute,” Carlton received a Grammy nomination for “Best Jazz Fusion Performance” for his live album Last Nite. His next project, the all-electirc On Solid Ground, was nominated for a Grammy in 1989. The release of On Solid Ground came almost one year after Carlton was brutally shot in a random act of violence outside his Los Angeles studio. In 1990, MCA acquired GRP Records and placed their jazz artists under the GRP moniker. Immediately, GRP issued a greatest hits package of Carlton’s work on MCA, called Collection. In 1991, Carlton entered the studio to record a blues-based album with John Ferraro, keyboard

marked the first time Carlton had included both acoustic and electric tracks on a single solo project. Carlton remains an in-demand artist in concert halls around the national and the world, as he continues to leave his mark on jazz, blues, pop and rock for the foreseeable future.

John Pizzarelli World-renowned guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli has been hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.” The Toronto Star pegged him as “the genial genius of the guitar.” And the Seattle Times saluted him as “a rare entertainer of the old school.” Established as one of the prime contemporary interpreters of the Great American Songbook, Pizzarelli has expanded that repertoire by including the music of Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Antônio Carlos Jobim and the Beatles. His themed shows, often performed with his wife Jessica Molaskey, suggest there is no limit to Pizzarelli’s imagination or talent. Having concentrated on the music of Paul McCartney, Johnny Mercer and Frank Sinatra over the last two years, Pizzarelli has returned to the bossa nova of Antônio Carlos Jobim with his July 28, 2017 Concord Jazz release Sinatra & Jobim @ 50. With co-vocalist Daniel Jobim, grandson of the legendary Brazilian composer, the two explore songs Sinatra and Jobim recorded in 1967 and 1969 as well as add new songs to the mix flavored with the spirit of the classic Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim album. Pizzarelli’s latest album for Concord is a followup to his wildly successful Midnight McCartney, an album The New Yorker said “may be the best collection of McCartney covers ever recorded.” Since its release in 2015, Pizzarelli has toured North America, South America, Asia and Europe performing shows centered on Frank Sinatra’s centennial, the songs of Johnny Mercer and a McCartney program in which his quartet is joined by strings and a horn section. He also tours on a double bill with pianist Ramsey Lewis and is looking forward to touring a celebration of Nat King Cole’s music for his centennial, which will be in 2019. “His sound was singular and inspired,” says Pizzarelli, who started playing guitar at age six,

following in the tradition of his father Bucky. “I’ve always said we’re an extension, a 21stcentury version of what that group was.” While plenty of jazz greats influenced his work—Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Zoot Sims, Clark Terry and Slam Stewart, among others— Cole has been Pizzarelli’s hero and foundation over the last 25 years. He devoted two albums to his music, Dear Mr. Cole in 1994 and P.S. Mr. Cole, recorded and released five years later. Pizzarelli’s solo recording career started in 1990 with My Blue Heaven on Chesky Records. He played clubs and concert halls on the jazz circuit, opening for such greats as Dave Brubeck, Ramsey Lewis and Rosemary Clooney. In 1993, he was honored to open for Frank Sinatra’s international tour and then joined in the celebration for his 80th birthday at Carnegie Hall, bringing down the house singing “I Don’t Know Why I Love You Like I Do” with his father accompanying him. After recording albums for RCA devoted to torch ballads (After Hours), classic swing and bold originals (Our Love Is Here to Stay), holiday songs (Let’s Share Christmas) and the Fab Four (John Pizzarelli Meets the Beatles), Pizzarelli signed with Telarc International, a division of Concord Music Group. His string of successful albums started in 2000 with Kisses in the Rain, a diverse set of standards and original tunes that showcase the spontaneity of his live performances within a studio setting, followed by Let There Be Love. On his 2002 album, The Rare Delight of You, Pizzarelli teamed up with veteran pianist George Shearing. In the tradition of classic quintet-and-vocalist recordings, they lay down great standards (including “Be Careful, It’s My Heart,” “If Dreams Come True” and “Lost April”) as well as a couple originals, all with vibrant arrangements. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the John Pizzarelli Trio along with pianist Ray Kennedy and bassist/brother Martin Pizzarelli, Live at Birdland was released in April 2003. After

LARRY CARLTON AND JOHN PIZZARELLI listening to the recording, a JazzTimes critic raved, “Spend five minutes with Pizzarelli and you’ll fully appreciate his inimitable warmth, humor and munificence of spirit.” In 2004, Pizzarelli made his first album of Brazilian music, Bossa Nova. Produced by Russ Titelman, the acclaimed disc features several Brazilian musicians including drummer Paulo Braga, pianist César Camargo Mariano and vocalist Daniel Jobim. Knowing You, Pizzarelli’s 2005 release, pays homage to the many talented musicians and songwriters he’s met throughout his career, among them Jimmy McHugh, Sammy Cahn, Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Johnny Mandel and Brian Wilson. The Associated Press called the disc “A classy, urbane session. The rich colors make this among the best of Pizzarelli’s albums.” In 2006, Telarc introduced Dear Mr. Sinatra, John’s tribute set to “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” featuring the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. His 2008 recording, the GRAMMY Award-nominated With a Song in My Heart, celebrates the music of composer Richard Rodgers and includes swinging Rodgers & Hart standards like “The Lady Is a Tramp,” “Mountain Greenery” and “Johnny One Note” and theater songs from South Pacific and The King and I. The singer-guitarist’s first-ever Duke Ellington recording, Rockin’ in Rhythm, was released in 2010. For the dozen tracks, Pizzarelli took the tack of Ellington, noticeably displaying the strengths of the musicians in the band. In addition to a cut for solo guitar, four songs highlight the quartet (with pianist Larry Fuller, bassist Martin Pizzarelli and drummer Tony Tedesco) and seven include the Swing Seven horns with arrangements by Don Sebesky. Pizzarelli married songs from great pop songwriters of his own generation with traditional jazz arrangements and melodies. Double Exposure, released in 2012, united the Beatles and Lee Morgan, Tom Waits with Billy Strayhorn and the Allman Brothers Band with the style of Wes Montgomery. As he told the Wall Street Journal, “I asked myself a couple of questions: ‘How can we take the style we do and communicate it to people who grew up on Gershwin and people who grew up on the Beatles? How do we communicate jazz to the non-jazz listeners?’” Pizzarelli’s Midnight McCartney had its origins in McCartney’s 2012 album, Kisses on the Bottom.

Pizzarelli played guitar on 10 of the album’s 14 tracks and backed Sir Paul at an iTunes concert at Capitol Records Studios, the GRAMMY Awards and the Recording Academy’s annual MusiCares Person of the Year Gala. Fifteen months after those gigs, McCartney wrote to Pizzarelli to consider recording some of his lesser-known songs in a jazz style. The album hit a new chart high for John, reaching No. 4 on Billboard’s Jazz Albums chart. John has been a special guest on recordings for major pop names such as James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Kristin Chenoweth, Tom Wopat, Rickie Lee Jones and Dave Van Ronk, as well as leading jazz artists such as Rosemary Clooney, Ruby Braff, Johnny Frigo, Buddy DeFranco, Harry Allen and, of course, Bucky Pizzarelli. He was featured opposite Donna Summer, Jon Secada and Roberta Flack on the GRAMMY Award-winning collection, Songs from the Neighborhood: The Music of Mr. Rogers in 2005. A radio personality who got his start in the medium in 1984, Pizzarelli is co-host, alongside Jessica Molaskey, of Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli. Heard on more than 40 radio stations and on the Internet, the syndicated radio show brings warmth, humor and that long-lost “live” feel back to radio. The show takes place in their “deluxe living room high atop Lexington Avenue,” and the conversations are relaxed, candid and off-the-cuff as is the music. The show is also available globally as a podcast at www.johnpizzarelli.com and via iTunes. In 1997, Pizzarelli made his Broadway debut in the musical Dream, a revue of Johnny Mercer songs. He led a 40-member live orchestra at Radio City Music Hall in Sinatra: His Voice, His World, His Way in 2003. His instructional DVD Exploring Jazz Guitar—filled with demonstrations, lessons and anecdotes—is available from Hal Leonard. Pizzarelli received the 2009 Ella Fitzgerald Award from the Montreal International Jazz Festival, joining a select group of past winners including Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett and Harry Connick Jr. Pizzarelli performs annual fall engagements at the Café Carlyle with Jessica Molaskey; Time magazine calls the duo the “AstaireRodgers of the cabaret world.” Most recently, the Huffington Post raved, “An evening with John and Jess is unparalleled. The music is, as always, magnificent; the singing is, as always, exceptional; the patter is, as always, haphazardly charming.”

WEDNESDAY, MAY 9, 2018

PROGRAM NOTES ACT I : The Garden of Prince Siegfried’s Castle Prince Siegfried has come of age and entered upon a new world of affairs of war and the burdens of manhood. It is the day for leaving behind the whims and caprice of youth. A happy day for the Prince, though touched by anxiety. The kindly jester and tutor who have been the Prince’s loving companions since his childhood are the first to congratulate him. He greets his companions and joyfully accepts the congratulations of all the residents of the Castle. The Prince’s subjects come from far and wide to take part in the festivities. They confer upon him the sword and scepter of authority and swear allegiance to their new ruler. His mother, the Queen Mother of the Realm, presents him with an arbalest as a gift and reminds him that the time has come to choose a bride and that he must make the fateful decision at tomorrow’s ball. He is eager to contemplate this life change in silence. The festivities continue, but the Prince is overcome by a desire to be alone, far from his guests. As he begins to search the contents of his heart he notices a flight of white swans heading toward the nearby lake. He is inspired and follows them there, disappearing into the night. ACT II : A Lakeside The voyage to the lake takes the Prince into the depths of the forest. He approaches the Swans quietly and as he nears he sees something quite out of the ordinary. The Swans have stepped ashore and assumed human form! Siegfried lowers the crossbow, astonished with their striking beauty. He gathers his courage and reveals himself. Odette, the swan’s Queen tells him of their terrible curse. They are all at the mercy of the wicked sorcerer Rotbart and only by finding true love can the evil spell be lifted. Siegfried, overcome with love at first sight, swears to her an everlasting love. As the sun beings to dawn, Odette warns him that if he breaks his oath, nothing will be able to help them. The Prince is completely overcome by the incomparable and exquisite delicacy of Odette, and swears that he will return and free her from the evil spell. As the sunlight touches them, the women transform back into Swans, cloaked in silence. --Intermission-ACT III : The Great Hall of Prince Siegfried’s Castle The castle resounds to the clamor of festivities. Renowned Princesses from Hungary, Russia, Spain, Italy and Poland are presented to the Prince. He must choose one of them as his bride, in order to strengthen his authority and consolidate his power. However, in none of these royal heiresses does he find a maiden comparable to Odette, to whom he has given his heart. He rejects them all. With an overwhelming blare of trumpets, a couple of new guests are announced. The evil sorcerer, Rotbart, enters in the guise of a noble knight, and following close behind is his daughter, Odylle, who looks remarkably like Odette. The similarity is so close, in fact, that Siegfried believes, if only for a split second, that it is Odette standing there before him. Odylle seizes the brief moment of illusion as an opportunity and will not allow him to find his senses. She becomes a bewitching temptress, luring him, hypnotizing him, and tricking him into confessing his undying love to her! In this hypnotic stupor, he proclaims that Odylle is to be his bride. Rotbard has triumphed! Siegfried has broken his oath to Odette, betraying her by professing love to another, thereby dooming Odette and the others to an eternity under Rotbart’s evil power. Suddenly a vision of the Swan Lake appears before Siegfried’s eyes, snapping him back into reality. He realizes the terrible mistake he has made. In despair he leaves the palace and hurries to Odette at the Lake. ACT IV : The Lakeside Night falls again on the Lake. The swan maidens are anxious, for if the Prince does not fulfill his vow to set them free, they will be doomed to everlasting captivity. The sorcerer raises a raging storm to conceal the Swan Lake behind a screen of dark clouds, But the Prince rushes headlong through the storm to Odette. The sorcerer attempts to conceal her from him, but no power can stop the young man whose heart is so full of love. The Prince overcomes all obstacles, and the spell cast by the evil sorcerer is dashed forever on the rock of true love.
