Welcome to the Mayo Performing Arts Center! Dear Patron, In the winter of 1994, conductor Valery Gergiev and his friend, classical pianist Alexander Slobodyanik, entered the boarded-up, run-down Community Theatre which had been closed and left to ruin. Gergiev stepped on to the dilapidated stage, snapped his fingers, listened to the acoustics and proclaimed, “The Kirov with play here!” On September 29, 1994, after a massive cleanup effort by hundreds of volunteers, Gergiev and the Kirov opened the newly created Community Theatre performance hall. It was a night to remember. How quickly 20 years has passed. In the last two decades, the Theatre has been renovated and expanded. 1937-era restrooms have been replaced by state-of-the-art modern facilities. The stage has been ripped apart, rebuilt and enlarged. Where once stood a house now stands our administrative offices, education studios, backstage production facilities and the Starlight Room. MPAC has grown up from a local community theatre into a world class performing arts center. We’ve attracted amazing artists over the years – Ringo Starr, Ray Charles, Harry Connick, Jr., Itzhak Perlman and David Brubeck, just to name a few. We now present Broadway touring companies with large-scale shows like Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. What was a once only a dream in 1994 has become a reality today. MPAC has become the cultural nucleus of Northern New Jersey. This season, we are especially delighted to welcome back Valery Gergiev for the first time since that historic concert 20 years ago. Save the date of January 30, 2015 for our special 20th anniversary concert. Equally as important to bringing the world’s greatest artists to Morristown is fostering an environment of learning and inclusion for the youth of our community. Something special with the children of our area happens in our building nearly every day. MPAC is the home to a robust arts education and outreach program that continues to flourish. Fully produced musicals such as Hairspray, performing arts classes, residency programs at local schools, schooltime educational shows, master classes with industry pros, Music Students of the Month, visual art contests, Poetry Out Loud, the traveling teen performing arts company and our internship program touch the lives of over 40,000 school age children and their families. In 20 years, we have become a powerful economic engine for the local community, a valued education resource for children and home to the world’s greatest entertainers who make performance after performance something to remember and cherish. Who would have thought what a snap of the fingers would have created! Sincerely, Joseph M. Goryeb Chairman, Board of Trustees

The Miracle on South Street Celebrating 20 years!

The 2014-2015 season marks the 20th anniversary of the Mayo Performing Arts Center. Originally built ias Morristown’s premier movie theater in 1937 and called The Community Theatre, MPAC (renamed in 2009) was saved from the wrecking ball in 1994 by a group of community volunteers who envisioned the value a vibrant arts center could have on a town. Morristown resident and classical pianist Alexander Slobodyanik invited his friend, Valery Gergiev, the conductor of the Kirov Orchestra, to enter the boarded up theater in early 1994. Mr. Gergiev stood on stage, snapped his fingers, heard the acoustics and proclaimed, “The Kirov will play here.” After a summer in which hundreds of residents volunteered their time to remove mushrooms growing from the floor, and cleaned up the mold, mildew and dust, the Kirov did play here. On September 29, 1994, a new era was born with the rebirth of The Community Theatre – once Morristown’s crown jewel of a movie palace -- into a concert hall. Twenty years, later, MPAC remains Morristown’s crown jewel, and has evolved into a world renowned performing arts center, with over 200 events on our stage every year, attracting over 200,000 patrons, with an economic impact in excess of $14 million on the area. Tony Bennett, Ringo Starr, Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby, and many more of the world’s best known performers have graced the stage. It is the Morris County home to the New Jersey Symphony and New Jersey Ballet, and over the years, has provided space for many other New Jersey based arts organizations. Beyond what goes on our stage is the growth of MPAC’s education and outreach programs that bring the arts experience to children in communities throughout New Jersey, engaging the next generation of arts lovers in educational programs that instill confidence, inspire learning and encourage teamwork. From our teen Performing Arts Company to school residency programs, productions such as Hairspray to Music Students of the Month, MPAC education programs touch the lives of over 40,000 children and families annually. “The Miracle on South Street,” as dubbed by historian John T. Cunningham, still continues to inspire.

Join us on Friday, January 30, 2015 as Valery Gergiev returns for the first time since the opening in 1994 as we celebrate 20 years in Morristown!

Asia John Wetton - lead vocal and bass Carl Palmer - drums Geoff Downes - keyboards Sam Coulson - guitars ASIA, the legendary British band, moves into the next phase of its extraordinary career with Gravitas, a brave new album that explores different musical landscapes while embracing its familiar musical past. Produced and written by band members John Wetton and Geoff Downes, Gravitas is deeply introspective within a clearly accessible sound. The album also introduces the world to ASIA’s new guitarist, Sam Coulson, who came at the recommendation of Mr Big’s Paul Gilbert. Released on Frontiers Records on March 25th, the album is available in two configurations: a standard CD and a Deluxe Edition, that will include two bonus tracks and a DVD containing the “Valkyrie” music video, a promotional film, and footage of classic live ASIA tracks such as “Heat of the Moment,” recorded with the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria. From the title track, Gravitas, which chronicles a man’s struggle in the battlefield of life, to the powerfully compelling tale of unrequited love, “The Closer I Get To You,” the album is a tour de force for the band whose music has become a staple to rock fans. “Pure, unadulterated and stereotypical ASIA, with raw energy, enthusiasm and free from impurities,” says John Wetton. “ It conveys the spectrum of emotion and colour from real

life agonies to ecstatic fantasy of escapism. Great songs, fabulous performance. ‘Gravitas’ is ASIA by ASIA. At last.” “With the addition of Sam it allowed us to take the band in a slightly different, and perhaps tougher, direction,” says Carl Palmer. “As a band we have been able to grow, while at the same time, remain true to the classic ASIA sound that our fans know and love.” Asia’s debut album exploded onto the music scene in April,1982, and was the best selling album in the world of that year. Featuring Geoff Downes on keyboards; Steve Howe on guitar; Carl Palmer on drums; and John Wetton on lead vocal and bass; Asia was the logical successor to their collective bands of the 70s - Yes, ELP, King Crimson, UK, and The Buggles. The original ASIA reformed in 2006 for the first time in 23 years. “It always was a great live band, but this time the dragon has awakened with fresh energy, direction and purpose,” says Wetton. “As with any new Asia album, putting it all together presents something of a challenge,” says Geoff Downes. “ Everyone involved rose way above and beyond this challenge. There is a renewed energy when we step on stage now; we can feel it and I know the fans can feel it.” For ASIA’s long-devoted fans, the band’s return to the concert stage can not come soon enough. As Palmer says: “Performing on stage is where this band truly comes into its element. Seeing the fans reacting to our music is what makes it all worthwhile. It is the fuel that drives this train we call ASIA.”

Dick Fox’s The Golden Boys Frankie Avalon One of America’s most popular entertainers, Frankie Avalon went form 50’s teen idol to a national and international star. Born in Philadelphia, Frankie had his early trumpet playing career end abruptly when a family friend Bob Marcucci heard him sing and signed him to a recording contract. His first song ”De De Dinah” became a smash hit and his recording of “Venus” was one of the biggest selling hits of the era. He had many follow up hits such as “Bobbysocks to stockings,” “Gingerbread,” “Just Ask Your Heart,” and “A Boy Without A Girl.” He is also credited with having the last number one record of the 50’s with “Why” reaching that status in December 1959. In addition to his popularity as a top recording artist, Frankie became a motion picture star, appearing in over 30 movies, starring with such luminaries as Alan Ladd in “Guns Of Timberland,” and John Wayne in “The Alamo.” Other film credits include ‘Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea,” and the hit musical “Grease.” His biggest popularity in movies came when he starred in the classic Beach movies… “Beach Party,” “Muscle Beach Party,” “Beach Blanket Bingo,” and “Bikini Beach” among others. A highly popular attraction on the concert circuit throughout the world, he has appeared in every major country and his appearance at the International Festival Of Stars in Romania marked the second time that an entertainer from the United States has performed in that Iron Curtain country since World War II, the other being Louis Armstrong. In addition to his solo performances, in 1985 Frankie began touring with two neighborhood friends Fabian and Bobby Rydell in a show entitled “The Golden Boys.” That show is now in its 29th year of touring, doing over 500 hundred shows. The Golden Boys have appeared on many major television specials such as “The American Music Awards,” the closing ceremonies of the “Miss Liberty Special,” (which was seen by over 200 million people) and the ABC Inaugural special, “Command performance: An All-Star Salute To The President.” In 1987, Frankie reunited with his co-star in the original beach movies, Annette in

the summer movie hit “Back To The Beach.” Frankie can also be seen regularly on the Home Shopping Network on behalf of his company, Avalon Products. Apart from his busy work schedule, Frankie is an avid golfer and lives in Los Angeles with his wife Kay, who he married in 1963, and their eight children. Fabian An overnight singing sensation, a film star with over 30 films to his credit and the producer of his own concert series, FABIAN continues to expand his ever growing career. On January 8, 2002, he received show business’ highest honor, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In his latest endeavor, FABIAN hosted and performed in The Original Stars of American Bandstand at the new Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theatre in Branson, Missouri, along with Bobby Vee, the Chiffons, Brian Hyland and Chris Montez. FABIAN also performs with Frankie Avalon and Bobby Rydell as The Golden Boys. Besides appearing in every major city in the United States and playing to packed venues in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, The Golden Boys have starred in such television specials as “The American Music Awards”, “Miss Teenage America”, and “Command Performance: An All Star Salute To The President”. As an actor, FABIAN makes frequent television and feature film appearances and helps raise awareness and money for the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association and veteran’s causes. In 1998 FABIAN married Andrea Patrick, a former Miss Pennsylvania and Miss West Virginia, who is owner/CEO of the Patrick Talent Agency. He is also the proud father of a son, Christian, who is a successful screenwriter (“Albino Alligator”) and a daughter, Julie. FABIAN and Andrea live in their recently built dream house in western Pennsylvania. Born on February 6, 1943, FABIAN FORTE was actually discovered at the age of 14 sitting on his front steps in Philadelphia. Soon thousands were to throng to his concerts. Capitalizing on his good looks and ability to excite an audience, FABIAN reached dizzying

heights of success. At 15, he won the Silver Award as “The Most Promising Male Vocalist of 1958”. By the time he was 18, he had recorded dozens of hit singles, eight albums, and earned gold records for “Turn Me Loose” and “Tiger” and a gold album for “The Fabulous Fabian”. In 1959, FABIAN made his screen debut in “Hound Dog Man” opposite Carol Lynley. He then began to concentrate on another aspect of show business that interested him more than singing acting. His role as a homicidal maniac in a TV production titled “A Lion Walks Among Us” directed by Robert Altman solidly established his credentials as a versatile and powerful actor. Serious about his craft, FABIAN studied in New York for three years under Wynn Handman and with Charles Conrad and Sandy Meisner in Hollywood. His impressive acting credits include featured roles with John Wayne, James Stewart, Jack Palance, Tuesday Weld, George Segal and Karen Black. FABIAN never disappoints his fans. They see a stunning man to whom the years have been kind, a man who is as fresh and as magnetic as ever. A consummate professional, FABIAN has pursued his career with an admirable intensity. He has traveled the show business ladder and survived, his sense of humor and integrity intact. Bobby Rydell Bobby Rydell’s career spans six decades and encompasses every area of the entertainment world. His debut in the late 50’s as a rock & roll teen idol lead to starring roles in such hit films as “Bye Bye Birdie” and plays such as “West Side Story.” Bobby has made countless network TV appearances throughout the world on shows like Ed Sullivan, Jack Benny, George Burns, Milton Berle, Perry Como and of course American Bandstand. He was also a semi regular on the Red Skelton Hour for many years. Working with the “greats” of comedy Bobby was able to develop an uncanny gift for comedy. Bobby has earned a reputation as a classic performer. Not only is he a superb singer whose voice has gotten better over the years – he has proved to be an outstanding drummer, an agile dancer and an extremely fine actor, with an unsurpassed knack for comedy. A polished performer at the age of 19, he was the youngest person ever to headline the

famous Copacabana in New York. Bobby’s recording career earned him 34 Top 40 hits, placing him in the Top 5 artists of his era (Billboard Magazine). Bobby’s hits include million selling singles Volare, Wild One, We Got Love, Kissin’ Time, Swingin’ School and Forget Him, selling a combined total of over 25 million records. Today Bobby enjoys a career that is full. He has a busy schedule throughout the world as a headline solo act. Australia has welcomed him for 20 tours down under, where he continues to be a favorite performer. Bobby also performs regularly in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. For the past 29 years Bobby has also performed in over 700 shows in the must-see production called “The Golden Boys.” This is a happy, fun filled look back at a simpler time in music history with his childhood pals, Frankie Avalon and Fabian. Bobby Rydell’s influence on popular music has been profound. When the producers of “Grease” wanted to pay tribute to the era in which the popular musical was set, they named the high school where most of the action took place “Rydell High” in his honor. Recently, Bobby appeared with Ann-Margret at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences premiere of “Bye Bye Birdie’s” digital restoration at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills. In 1995 his hometown of Philadelphia, PA named the street he was born “Bobby Rydell Boulevard.” The City of Philadelphia sponsored “block party” followed dedication ceremonies. Quite a tribute to a City’s favorite native son! Wildwood, NJ also has a street named for Bobby in appreciation for Bobby’s massive hit, “Wildwood Days.” On 7/9/2012 Bobby underwent a double organ transplant. He received 75% of a liver and one kidney. His life was about to end when the generous family of a dying child saved eight lives by organ donation. Bobby returned to the stage in Las Vegas in just 6 months, turning near tragedy to triumph. Today he is dedicated to public awareness; spreading the word to the world in his travels about the Gift of Life thru organ donation The teen idol, now a seasoned performer, continues to perform to sell out audiences throughout the world. As a review of a recent performance put it, “Bobby Rydell is a true American music treasure.”

Chazz Palminteri in “A Bronx Tale” Bronx-born and raised Chazz Palminteri was a natural choice to continue the long line of prominent Italian actors in the film industry. In the tradition set forth in the 1970s by such icons as director Martin Scorsese and actors Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, Palminteri has brought grit, muscle and an evocative realism to the sidewalks of his New York neighborhood, violent as they are and were. Born in 1952, Palmintieri grew up in a tough area of the Bronx and it gave young Calogero (Palminteri’s given first name) the life lessons that would later prove very useful to his career. He started out pursuing his craft in studying at the Actor’s Studio with Lee Straussberg. He appeared off-Broadway in the early 1980s while paying his dues as a singer in his own band. Well known for A BRONX TALE, Palminteri originally wrote the script for the stage and performed it as a one-man show in Los Angeles. It became the hottest property in Hollywood since ROCKY. Mr. Palminteri was offered over a million dollars to walk away from the project and with $200.00 left in the bank he refused. He wanted to play Sonny and write the screenplay. One night Robert DeNiro walked in to see the show and as they say ”the rest is history.” He then moved the production to New York, where it played for four sold-out months and earned him nominations for the New York Outer Critics Circle for both acting and writing. While in New York he completed the screenplay of A

BRONX TALE and soon found himself starring opposite Robert DeNiro, who chose the script for his directorial debut. Chazz has more than 50 movies to his credit including The Usual Suspects, Bullets Over Broadway (Academy Award nomination), Analyze This, Hurlyburly, Mulholland Falls, Faithful (screenplay also written by Chazz Palminteri), Poolhall Junkies, The Perez Family, Jade, Diabolique, Down to Earth and A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. Recent films include Final Recourse, Mighty Fine starring Andie MacDowell, Yonkers Joe, Jolene and The Dukes. He has also directed the HBO series “Oz” (episode, “Unnatural Disasters”), Showtime’s “Women vs.Men” and the feature film Noel, starring Susan Sarandon, Penelope Cruz, Robin Williams and Paul Walker. He appeared on the New York stage in the play The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui starring with Al Pacino, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Billy Crudup. Chazz is a member of the Actors Studio in NYC. Chazz received the 1996 Leadership in Entertainment Award from the Coalition of Italo-American Association, Inc. and was honored by President Clinton with a Special Achievement Award for the Performing Arts from the National Italian American Foundation in Washington, D.C. Chazz currently resides in Weschester County, NY with his lovely wife, Gianna and their two children, Dante & Gabriella.

Bill Cosby One of America’s most beloved comedians of all time, Bill Cosby has captivated generations of fans with his comedy routines, iconic albums and best selling books such as Fatherhood. His comedy transcends age, gender and cultural barriers. Cosby broke television’s racial barrier with I Spy, becoming the first African American to costar on a television series while winning three consecutive Emmys. He created and produced the Emmy-winning cartoon Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, which began airing in the 1970s and was made into a film in 2004. The show, based on Cosby’s childhood in Philadelphia, was designed to educate and entertain. The former Navy serviceman’s illustrious list of accomplishments includes roles on the children’s educational show Electric Company and creating and producing the Emmy award winning Little Bill, which is based on his bestselling book series. Perhaps Cosby’s greatest contribution to American entertainment and culture is The Cosby Show, about a close-knit, upper class black family. Cosby said his intent was to portray an American family. Time magazine

called the show “an encouraging sign of maturity in matters of race.” The Cosby Show dominated the No. One spot for years, earning nearly unanimous critical praise. Life magazine described the program as “a gentle, whimsical, warmhearted” show whose “delicious ordinariness of its pleasures and tribulations has given millions a fresh, laughter-splashed perspective on their own domestic lives.” Bill Cosby’s current best seller is I Didn’t Ask to Be Born, But I’m Glad I Was. Cosby talks about the Bible, being a grandfather and his first love in his humorous and insightful manner. Cosby has received the Kennedy Center Honors, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (America’s highest civilian honor), the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Marian Anderson Award. Cosby’s been busy raising a family, too. He married the former Camille Hanks on January 25, 1964, while she was still a student at the University of Maryland. They raised four daughters (Erika, Erinn, Ensa and Evin) and one son (Ennis) and now have three grandchildren. The family resides in New England.

Preservation Hall Jazz Hall Band and Allen Toussaint Preservation Hall was founded in 1961 to promote traditional New Orleans jazz in all its authenticity. Legendary players like George Lewis, Sweet Emma Barrett and Kid Thomas Valentine, all rooted in the formative years jazz, were its original stars. That generation is long gone now, yet the hall is still in business and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band continues to tour the world. Therein lays a paradox: how does an institution based on an early 20th century musical culture prosper in the 21st century? When asked that question on the occasion of the Hall’s 50th anniversary, Creative Director Ben Jaffe had a ready answer: “This anniversary is about the next fifty years.” For Jaffe, 41, this not just a business question: he’s carrying on a family tradition started by his parents, Allan and Sandra Jaffe, who were instrumental in founding the Hall and turning it into an internationally known cultural icon. When Ben took over the operation in 1995, he faced the challenge of keeping it going with a dwindling band of veteran musicians and an aging audience base. His solution has been to inject the touring band with new blood, bringing in some younger players with fresh musical ideas and to form collaborations with groups and musicians from outside the New Orleans tradition. In recent years, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (PHJB) has performed and recorded with a wide array of musicians, ranging from groups like My Morning Jacket, Tom Waits, Merle Haggard, Pete Seeger, and the Del McCoury Band. The culmination of this collaborative effort was the sellout 50th anniversary concert that the PHJB hosted at Carnegie Hall in January 2012. Their album, “That’s It” breaks new ground for PHJB: it’s the first time that it has recorded an album made up of entirely original material—most of it composed by Jaffe and members of his group. The album was coproduced by Ben Jaffe and Jim James, leader of My Morning Jacket, and encouraged by songwriters Paul Williams, Dan Wilson and Chris Stapleton, who co-wrote three of the titles with the band. Band members Charlie Gabriel, Rickie Monie, and Clint Maedgen pitched in on some of the compositions. Once the material was written

and rehearsed, Jim James and his sound engineer Kevin Ratterman drove down from Louisville with a van full of equipment and set it up among the splintery wooden benches and smoky paintings in Preservation Hall. That recording session produced the eleven tracks on this album. Though it was not unheard of in the past for Preservation Hall musicians to compose some of the music they performed—drummer Paul Barbarin wrote “Bourbon Street Parade” and clarinetist George Lewis wrote “Burgundy Street Blues,” for example—this album marks the first time that a substantial body of new music was created by the band and entered the Preservation Hall repertoire. This constitutes a rich lode of fresh material not only for the current members of the touring PHJB, but also for other musicians who play at the hall and may be inspired to pick up on some of these songs. In the heyday of the Jazz Age, New Orleans musicians learned new tunes all the time by listening to what their peers were doing in the dance halls and on their recordings. One of the aims of this album is to stimulate that kind of cross-pollination among today’s New Orleans jazzmen. The broader public will hopefully find this music engaging, enthralling—and irresistibly danceable. No one who hears Jaffe’s funky tuba lines, Joe Lastie’s backbeat drumming and the band’s groove on tunes like “The Darker it Gets” could doubt the group’s traditional New Orleans roots. On the other hand, Clint Maedgen’s boozy “August Nights,” with its haunting tenor sax riffs and sultry muted trumpet work by Mark Braud, is a Tom Waits-like hymn to urban despair that would be at home on any barroom jukebox in the world. The punchy horn-section riffs on “Come With Me” and “That’s It” have a bite and exuberance that recall the Ellington big band sound. “I Think I Love You,” is a pop tune with a Caribbean beat and a smooth, sexy vocal by 80-year-old reedman Charlie Gabriel (with Jim James singing backup). In addition to Charlie Gabriel and Ronell Johnson (“Dear Lord Give Me the Strength,” “Halfway Right, Halfway Wrong”), Fred Lonzo (“Rattlin’ Bones”) turns in strong vocals that underscore the wide variety of talent this band embraces. In short, “That’s It” is an eclectic album that draws on the collective

experience of players nurtured in the New Orleans tradition, but determined to build something fresh on that foundation. It marks an important milestone in Jaffe’s crusade to carry forward the Hall’s original mission while making it relevant to today’s audiences. Coproducer Jim James is convinced that the PHJB has a future as vibrant as its past: “The music will speak forever,” he says. “Will people stop listening to Beethoven? Will people stop listening to Bob Dylan? Will people stop listening to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band?” Not if Ben Jaffe can help it. “My parents were never preservationists in any strict sense,” he says. “They simply presented the music the way the old jazzmen wanted to play it. This is the music we want to play today. We’ll continue to do the old standards, along with new material that allows us to be creative and relevant. With this album, I wanted to do something that would challenge us and make us proud.” That’s it. Allen Toussaint (born January 14, 1938) is an American musician, songwriter and record producer, and one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R&B. Toussaint has crossed many paths in his illustrious 40 years plus career in music. He has produced, written for, arranged, had his songs covered by, and performed with music giants The Judds, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Patti LaBelle, Mac “Dr. John” Rebennack, Aaron and Art Neville, Joe Cocker, The (original) Meters, Glen Campbell, The Band, Little Feat, The Rolling Stones, Devo, Ernie K-Doe, Lee Dorsey, Irma Thomas, Etta James, Ramsey Lewis, Eric Gale and countless others. His songs/productions have been featured in numerous films, including but not limited to, Casino, Moulin Rouge, and Maid in Manhattan. He served as Musical Director for the off Broadway play, Staggerlee, which won the prestigious Outer Circle Critics Award. Toussaint’s career began in his early twenties when hired by the local Minit Records to supervise its recording activities, awaiting their arrival of Harold Batiste. Toussaint quickly accumulated an amazing string of hits for the label; producing, writing, arranging and often performing on tracks by Ernie K-Doe, Irma Thomas, Art and Aaron Neville, Chris Kenner, and Benny Spellman, putting his signature New Orleans sound on the map, an obvious continuation of the Domino/Bartholomew era. Toussaint got his shot as a solo artist with a record for RCA. Two

of his earliest tunes, “Java,” which became a mega-hit for trumpeter Al Hirt and “Whipped Cream,” the Herb Alpert hit, became instrumental standards. Toussaint went on to team up with Lee Dorsey who was often backed by the funky rhythm section known as The Meters, turning out a string of hits including “Working in the Coalmine,” “Holy Cow,” “Ride Your Pony” and many others. “Working in the Coalmine” was then recorded by The Judds; “Yes We Can” became a hit by The Pointer Sisters; “Sneaking Sally Though the Alley” was recorded by both Robert Palmer and Ringo Starr. Toussaint continued to put his mark on the music business with his arrangements on LaBelle’s hit, “Lady Marmalade,” continuing on with Patti through the early stages of her solo career. Toussaint was honored with a Grammy nomination for the 1977’s song of the year, “Southern Nights,” performed by Glen Campbell. His career has spanned over 40 years, all adding up to include being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. After years of writing, producing, recording, arranging, performing and conducting, Toussaint’s music is continuing on. Several of his songs are commercial themes, “Yes We Can” (Slim Fast) and “Working in the Coalmine” (WalMart). His productions are continuously sampled, introducing it to an entire new arena of listeners (Louie – ODB and Lady Marmalade (Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Missy Elliot)). Songs “Java” and “Southern Night” have both been credited and cited for over 2 million airings. The most recent of Toussaint’s long list of honors and accolades is the Grammy nominated pop/vocal album of the year, The River in Reverse; Toussaint’s collaboration with Elvis Costello followed by The Bright Mississippi nomination for Best Instrumental Album. Toussaint was also awarded the Grand Prix from France’s Academia du Jazz, making Toussaint the first non-traditional jazz artist to be awarded such an honor. For Toussaint, Hurricane Katrina was the best booking agent and with that he has started to tour and perform before a whole new audience. In 2012, Toussaint was inducted into the Song Writers Hall Of Fame and The Blues Hall Of Fame. 2013 has not slowed down either – Toussaint received an honorary doctorate of Fine Arts from Tulane University along with Dr. John, Natasha Trethewey and his Holiness, the Dali Lama. The truly amazing part is that there’s more to come...

The Beach Boys You can capsulize most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they’ve had and how many millions of albums they’ve sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you’re assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. To be sure, this band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt. Happily for us all, The Beach Boys continue to create and perform with the same bold imagination and style that marked their explosive debut over 50 years ago. And now in 2013, their Capitol Records release, Sounds of Summer (RIAA certified triple platinum with over three million in sales and climbing), and it’s companion The Warmth of the Sun marks a resurgence in Beach Boys interest that has again rocked the world. Even more than the Beatles, The Beach Boys found through their music the key to unfading youth—and they made copies for everyone. To these guys, the beach isn’t just a place where the surf comes to play—it’s where life is renewed and made whole again. Captained by Mike Love, The Beach Boys play an astoundingly busy schedule of concerts, averaging 150 shows a year, ranging from sundrenched summer festivals to gala New Year’s celebrations and special events worldwide. In 1974 Mike Love’s concept album Endless Summer ignited a second generation of Beach Boys fans and stirred a tempest that rocked the music world. Grammy-winning songwriter Bruce Johnston, [Barry Manilow’s “I Write the Songs”], joined The Beach Boys in 1965, replacing Glenn Campbell, who filled-in for Brian Wilson, on vocals/bass, when he retired from touring. Highly regarded as a singersongwriter, Johnston’s vocal work with such legendary artists as Elton John and Pink Floyd firmly established him among rock’s elite artists. Had this remarkable band been less committed to its art and its fans, it could have retired from the field with honor at dozens of points along the way, confident that it had made a lasting contribution to world culture. It could have rested on the success of the

epoch-shifting Pet Sounds masterpiece in 1966 . . . or after recording Love’s co-written Golden Globe nominated “Kokomo” in 1988 and seeing it become its best selling single ever . . . or after being inducted that same year into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame . . . or after watching its worldwide album sales blow past l00 million . . . or after winning the NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 [along with The Who, Bob Marley, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr. and Les Paul]. And still, The Beach Boys continue to have fun, fun, fun, with no end in sight. In addition to founding Beach Boy Mike Love (lead vocals) and Beach Boy-vet Bruce Johnston (vocals/keyboards)--Christian Love (guitar/vocals), Randell Kirsch (bass/vocals), Tim Bonhomme (keyboards/vocals), John Cowsill of The Cowsills (percussion /vocals) and Scott Totten (guitar/vocals) round out the band. Few, if any, acts can match The Beach Boys’ concert presence, spirit and performance. They were center-stage at Live Aid, multiple Farm Aids, the Statue of Liberty’s 100th Anniversary Salute, the Super Bowl and the White House. On one day alone—July 4, 1985—they played to nearly 2 million fans at shows in Philadelphia and Washington, D. C. Love’s role as the band’s front man sometimes overshadows his stature as one of rock’s foremost songwriters. “Surfin’,” The Beach Boys’ first hit came from his pen. With his cousin, Brian Wilson, Love wrote the classics “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “California Girls” and the Grammy nominated “Good Vibrations.” Years later, he showed he still had the lyrical chops by cowriting the irresistible and chart-topping “Kokomo.” On The Beach Boys’ near horizon is continued charity activities through Mike Love’s Love Foundation, which supports national environmental and educational initiatives. Love and The Beach Boys’ recent efforts raised over a quarter of a million dollars for the Red Cross to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina and made additional contributions to the disaster relief in Haiti.

Smokey Robinson Once pronounced by Bob Dylan as America’s “greatest living poet,” acclaimed singersongwriter Smokey Robinson’s career spans over 4 decades of hits. He has received numerous awards including the Grammy Living Legend Award, NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award, Honorary Doctorate (Howard University), Kennedy Center Honors and the National Medal of Arts Award from the President of the United States. He has also been inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Robinson founded The Miracles while still in high school. The group was Berry Gordy’s first vocal group, and it was at Robinson’s suggestion that Gordy started the Motown Record dynasty. Their single of Robinson’s “Shop Around” became Motown’s first #1 hit on the R&B singles chart. In the years following, Robinson continued to pen hits for the group including “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” “Ooo Baby Baby,” “The Tracks of My Tears,” “Going to a Go-Go,” “More Love,” “Tears of a Clown” (co-written with Stevie Wonder), and “I Second That Emotion.” The Miracles dominated the R&B scene throughout the 1960’s and early 70’s and Robinson became Vice President of Motown Records serving as in-house producer, talent scout and songwriter. In addition to writing hits for the Miracles, Robinson wrote and produced hits for other Motown greats

including The Temptations, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway, Marvin Gaye and others. “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “My Girl,” “Get Ready,” “You Beat Me to the Punch,” “Don’t Mess with Bill,”“Ain’t That Peculiar,” and “My Guy” are just a few of his songwriting triumphs during those years. John Lennon of The Beatles made countless remarks regarding Robinson’s influence on his music. The Beatles had recorded Robinson and The Miracles’ “You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me” in 1963 and in 1982 another popular British group, The Rolling Stones covered the Robinson and the Miracles’ hit “Going To A Go-Go.” He later turned to a solo career where he continued his tradition of hitmaking with “Just to See Her,” “Quiet Storm,” “Cruisin’,” and “Being with You,” among others. He remained Vice President of Motown records until the sale of the company, shaping the label’s success with friend and mentor Berry Gordy. Following his tenure at Motown, he continued his impressive touring career and released several successful solo albums. During the course of his 50-year career in music, Robinson has accumulated more than 4,000 songs to his credit and continues to thrill sold-out audiences around the world with his high tenor voice, impeccable timing, and profound sense of lyric. Never resting on his laurels, Smokey Robinson remains a beloved icon in our musical heritage.

Colin Mochrie & Brad Sherwood: The Two Man Group Colin Andrew Mochrie was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland. As the son of an airline maintenance executive, his family tended to move around quite frequently. They first moved to Montreal and then to Vancouver in. He considered himself a loner during his childhood days due to his shyness, a trait that he claims he still evidently has. At 16, he was dared by a friend to join a High School play where he had the part of an undertaker. It was then when he got his first laugh (by splitting his pants) and afterwards, he “craved for nothing but more laughter.” He then turned to Theatersports, where he attended an acting school for four years. Introduced by a friend, he teamed up Ryan Stiles to do improv, who at the time was doing stand up comedy. Shortly after doing Expo ‘86, Colin moved to Toronto. There, he auditioned for The Second City (a famous North American comedy theater), where Ryan Stiles was working at the time. He was hired by Debra McGrath. In 1989, he and Deb got married. They later had a son, Luke, who was born sometime during 1991. Colin worked in The Second City for three years and the couple then moved to Los Angeles, where Deb worked on a TV series with Second City colleague, Linda Kash. They hated it there, and after spending their last few weeks selling off their CDs to buy diapers for their son, they moved back to Toronto. Colin has acted in various small roles in movies and series. His first movie was “the 3D Space Epic, ‘Space Hunter: Adventures of the Forbidden Zone’, [where] captures Molly Ringwald and utters the immortal line: ‘You can ask the Chemist.’” He has also earned other small roles in movies such “The Real Blonde” starring Kathleen Turner and Matthew Modine. He says that he is “planning to do big movies. Unfortunately, no one is planning to hire [him] for one.” His first TV series was “Downtown Saturday Night”, a sketch comedy-talk show shot in Vancouver. However, he is best known for being a regular on the TV show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” which is often known as WLiiA?. He had first auditioned for WLiiA? while in Toronto but hadn¹t made it. He auditioned again in L.A. a few years later and got the part, but he says he owes it all

to Ryan [Stiles] who “probably forced them” to hire him. In April 2000, he won a Canadian Comedy Award for the best male improviser. One year later, he grabbed another Canadian Comedy Award for Best Male Performance in Television Series (“Who’s Line is it Anyway?”). Colin has been an extremely busy actor. Currently he performs on stage, appears in several commercials, movies and is often on several TV series. He is seen on repeats of “Improv Heaven and Hell,” “The Drew Carey Show” as Eugene; and in “Supertown Challenge” (a show spoof making fun of small towns) as the host, Dick Powell. He has as done voiceover work as a sexually ambiguous alligator and along with his wife, a hyena. Along with that, he also filmed the American version of WLiiA? in L.A., episodes of Blackfly in Halifax, hosted the “Offbeat World” (a travel series), and finished voiceover work for “Seven Little Monsters”. Colin’s DVD with Brad, “Two Man Group: Live and Dangerous Comedy” is in stores. Colin can also currently be seen in primetime on the brand new improv sketch comedy show, “Drew Carey’s Improv-a-Ganza” on the Game Show Network. Brad Sherwood is a regular cast member on ABC’s Whose Line Is It Anyway? and was a regular on the British version on Comedy Central as well. His credits include The Drew Carey Show, The Green Screen Show, The Smartest Guy In Town, Jury Duty,VH-1’s I Love The 70s, 80s, & 90s, and over 100 sketch appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Brad’s other past credits include a season on LA Law, To Tell The Truth, The Newz, guest hosting Talk Soup, and hosting The New Dating Game. Brad is currently touring the world with Colin Mochrie in the very successful and critically acclaimed, two-man improv show appropriately titled, Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood: The Two Man Group Tour. Brad was recently seen opposite Drew Carey as the announcer on the game show The Price is Right. He can currently be seen in primetime on the brand new improv sketch comedy show, “Drew Carey’s Improv-aGanza” on the Game Show Network.

An Evening with Mario Batali Raised in Seattle, Mario attended high school in Madrid and studied the golden age of Spanish theater at Rutgers University. Soon after graduating, Mario enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu in London, his first formal culinary training. But after a few short months, he withdrew to apprentice with London’s legendary chef Marco Pierre White. During three years of intense culinary training in the Northern Italian village of Borgo Capanne (population 200), Mario learned the essential skills to return to his native US eager to plant his orange-clad foot firmly on the checkeredtablecloth Italian restaurant establishment. After having gained momentum on the New York restaurant scene at beloved neighborhood joints including Rocco’s and Po, Mario teamed up with Joe Bastianich to open Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca on Waverly Place in 1998. There he realized his cooking philosophy: use the best local ingredients as simply as possible and serve them with flourish and joy. As a Tuscan cooks in Chianti, as a Neapolitan cooks on the Amalfi coast, as a Sicilian cooks in Pantelleria, at Babbo Mario cooked as an Italian might in the Hudson Valley region. Today, Mario is one of the most recognized

and respected chefs worldwide. He and Joe have created a successful restaurant and culinary empire that spans New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Among his many accolades, Mario was named “Man of the Year” in the chef category by GQ Magazine in 1999. In 2002, he won the James Beard Foundation’s “Best Chef: New York City” award, and in 2005 the James Beard Foundation awarded Mario the designation “Outstanding Chef of the Year.” Mario was also a recipient of the 2001 D’Artagnan Cervena “Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America,” a prestigious food industry lifetime achievement award. Mario is also the author of nine cookbooks including the James Beard Award Winning, Molto Italiano: 327 Simple Italian Recipes (ecco 2005); New York Times Bestseller Mario Batali Italian Grill (ecco 2007); andMolto Batali: Simple Family Meals form My Home to Yours (ecco 2011). In 2008, Mario founded the Mario Batali Foundation with the mission of feeding, protecting educating and empowering children.
