MUSIC STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

Haley Asbury Grade 8, Mount Olive Middle School, Budd Lake; Nominated by Melany McQueeny Haley Asbury has been a member of the Mount Olive Middle School Band Program for 2.5 years. Not only has she grown as an outstanding flute player, she has also grown into quite a leader in the 8th grade band. Haley’s persistence and musicianship helps to motivate other members of the band. She is always willing to participate in class, even when she may not know if her answer is correct. Haley is always prepared for class with her instrument, pencil, and music. She is always willing to offer suggestions on how the ensemble can sound better. Haley is also a member of the high school marching band. She is a pleasure to work with and is a wonderful candidate for outstanding band member.

Lorraine Clark Grade 8, John Hill School, Boonton; Nominated by Yvonne Manca Lorraine has played the clarinet since she was in fourth grade. She is currently in eighth grade. Lorraine has mastered the low register and is able to play beautifully in the high register. Lorraine is able to read very difficult rhythms with correct pitch and accuracy. She is an asset to the music program at John Hill School. She is planning to continue at the high school level.

Shannon Flynn Grade 12, Jefferson Township High School, Oak Ridge; Nominated by Derek Sica Shannon is our top clarinetist, playing principal chair in our Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. She also plays the alto saxophone in both Marching Band and Jazz Band, held the position of Assistant Drum Major this year in Marching Band, and is the President of our chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Shannon has been a member of the following outside groups and honors ensembles during her time here at JTHS: Sussex County Youth Orchestra, All Sussex County Band, North Jersey Area Band, North Jersey Region Band, and New Jersey All State band.

Michelle Inn Grade 11, Parsippany High School, Parsippany; Nominated by Gergory Dalakian Michelle Inn has served as our Trumpet Section Leader in the PHS Marching Band for the last two years.

She is a great player and excellent role model to her peers. She works relentlessly as a Section Leader to motivate and improve her section. Just this past season, Michelle had a very exposed trumpet solo during a part of our field show and nailed it every time! She is an outstanding band member on and off the field and a great representation of what our marching band stands for: Pride, Honor, and Spirit. I hope you consider Michelle Inn for this great honor.

James Roberts Grade 12, Boonton High School, Boonton; Nominated by Alan Masters James Roberts is the most dedicated band member I have had in my 13 year career and a music educator.

James has played first trumpet in our concert band, pit orchestra and jazz band for four years. He is without a doubt the band’s leader during rehearsals and performances. He has always gone above and beyond to help grow the music program. I have taught James since he was in the 4th grade and he has been a pleasure to teach. When James graduates in June his leadership and trumpet playing will be greatly missed. The Boonton High School music department has improved because of him.

Steven Sack Grade 8, Copeland Middle School, Rockaway; Nominated by Bria Spotts Steven Sack is a true representation of an outstanding band member. Steven plays euphonium at Copeland Middle School as a member of the 8th Grade Concert Band as well as the Wind Ensemble. Steven also actively participates in the Mount Tabor Summer Band Camp program every summer. Steven is a very driven young man. He is currently preparing for his Junior Region audition that will take place in February.

One word that describes Steven is “dedicated�. He is dedicated to his instrument, his bands, and an overall kind and helpful person. There is no one more deserving of this honor.

David Stein Grade 10, Morristown High School, Morristown; Nominated by Michael Russo David Stein is an outstanding and dedicated student. He has been involved in many aspects of the Music Department and he has become a respected upperclassman to our younger members. David performs on Tuba in the Wind Ensemble and Marching Band and on the Bass Trombone in the Jazz Ensemble. He has also performed in the Solo and Small Ensemble Concert. He has proven by participating in these activities that he can be responsible and manage his time well. David has been selected as the first chair Tubist in the North Jersey Area Band Wind Ensemble 2 years in a row; has been selected for Region 1 Symphonic Band and was one of 6 Tubists from across the country selected to the 2016 National Honor Band of America!

Alexander Stuart Grade 12, Chatham High School, Chatham; Nominated by Barbara Klemp Alex has risen from entry-level freshman trumpet player to a high achieving senior in our prestigious Chatham High School Honors Music program through hard work, dedication, and genuine love for Music.

Alex has a very healthy appreciation for a variety of musical genres, and pursues his interests through active involvement in several Chatham High School Performing Arts opportunities including Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Marching Band (Drum Major, 2015 season), and Musical Theater productions. In addition, Alex participates as a volunteer musician for activities whenever the opportunity to share his talents with his school and community arise.

Kelly Sun Grade 12, Randolph High School, Randolph; Nominated by Dawn Russo Kelly is an outstanding member of the RHS Band program. She has an incredible work ethic and has developed into an outstanding clarinet player. Kelly has been in North Jersey Area Band and Region Band.

She is the first chair clarinet player in the RHS Wind Ensemble. She just auditioned and received first chair in the North Jersey Area Band Wind Ensemble. Kelly has also played with the RHS Jazz Ensemble when clarinet was needed and has been a 4-year member of The Marching Rams. Kelly is AWESOME as a person and a player.

Kathleen Walsh Grade 10, Roxbury High School, Roxbury; Nominated by Sarah Bednarcik Kathleen is the definition of an outstanding band member. She is one of the two baritone players in our top wind ensemble, studies privately on baritone, participates in chamber music activities, and is also a member of the Eastern Wind Symphony Youth band.

Brianna Ziegler Grade 8, Richard Butler Middle School, Butler; Nominated by Lyn Lowndes Brianna is in the Eighth Grade, plays the bass clarinet for Concert Band and taught herself tenor saxophone for Jazz Band. She has been a member of the Richard Butler Middle School Band program for the last four years, the Jazz Band for the last two years and participated with the High School Marching Band playing clarinet this past fall. Recently, Brianna auditioned for and was accepted into the North Jersey Area Band.

Brianna has been a leader in my band program and shows an enormous amount of enthusiasm with all that she does and is a polite and respectful student.
