FritzFLEGMATOV, grabs forALBINA the GHAZARYAN Nutcracker and breaks it. Drosselmeyerʼs RAMOS HERNANDEZ, SE HYUN JIN, ILSE KAPTEYN nephew helpsESNEL Clara tuck the broken Nutcracker into her doll's bed. The guests leave and the family retires forMARTIROSYAN, the night. Giant mice appear from behind the fireplace. toy soldiers pursue the mice. The Christmas tree CATHERINEChild-size WHITING, YUUKI YAMAMOTO grows very tall.RACHEL The CARINA, roomKAITLYN changes and everything DAL BON, JACKSON FERREIRA disappears except the now-giant Nutcracker who leads the toy soldiers against the mice. Clara wakes up and helps the SOFIA GONZALEZ GARCIA, NAHOKO NAKAMOTO Nutcracker defeat the Mouse King. AND The Nutcracker turns into a handsome prince, and he and Clara glide away. GUEST ARTISTS BROOKLYN MACK of Elgin, South Carolina, is an International Principal Guest Artist, most recently dancing with English National Ballet. He began his dance training at age 12 with the Pavlovich Dance School under Radenko Pavlovich and Milena Leben before receiving a scholarship to study at the Kirov Academy of Ballet. While at the Kirov, he trained primarily under the auspices of Anatoli Kucheruk and Vladimir Djouloukhadze. After graduating from Kirov, Mr. Mack then apprenticed with the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago and later joined American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company. Mr. Mack spent three seasons as a principal dancer with Orlando Ballet before becoming principal dancer of The Washington Ballet where he danced for 9 seasons. Mr. Mack has danced a wide array of choreography, spanning many different styles between classical, neoclassical, contemporary, abstract, and modern works throughout his career. Some of his notable awards include the Senior Silver Medal at the 2006 Jackson International Ballet Competition in Mississippi; the 2007 Princess Grace Fellowship Award; The Senior Silver Medal at the 2009 Helsinki IBC; the Marius Liepa Prize at the 2011 Boston IBC; the Silver Medal at the 2011 Korean International Dance Competition; the Gold Medal at the 2012 Boston International Ballet Competition; winner of the 2012 Istanbul Grand Prix; and the gold medal at the 2012 International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. Mr. Mack has also been featured on ABC, NBC, NPR, Ebony Magazine, listed in theGrio’s Top 100 (2014), and was named as a top “25 Dancers to watch” by Dance Magazine (2012). Mr. Mack is highly in demand as a guest Principal dancer the world over. In 2016, Mr. Mack made his debut on three of the world’s greatest stages; at Covent Garden’s largest theatre; the London Coliseum, The historic Bolshoi in Moscow, as well as the illustrious and historic Paris Opera ballet’s Palais Garnier stage. In 2017, Mr. Mack debuted in the Republic of Georgia at the Tbilisi Opera House. In 2018, Mr. Mack made his debut in the role of Solor during his debut on the Ukrainian National Opera’s stage with the Ukrainian National Ballet in La Bayadere. In June of 2019 Mr. Mack made his debut on the Metropolitan Opera House Stage at Lincoln Center, NYC
as a Principal Guest Artist with American Ballet Theatre. Most recently, Mr. Mack was Principal Guest Artist with English National Ballet for half of their 2019-2020 season, dancing various works in their repertoire including Ben in Wheeldon’s Cinderella, Prince in Wayne Eagling’s Nutcracker, William Forsythe’s Playlist, excerpts of Coppelia and Etudes, as well as reprising his leading roles in Le Corsaire. CHUN WAI CHAN Born in Guangdong, China, Chun Wai Chan trained at Guangzhou Art School and joined Houston Ballet in 2012, becoming a Principal in 2017 and joining New York City Ballet as a soloist in 2021. He danced Prince Siegfried in Stanton Welch’s Swan Lake and lead roles in William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated and Reflection by Justin Peck and many other lead roles in both classical and contemporary repertoire by renowned choreographers. Mr. Chan has had many successes which include being featured in Dance Magazine’s “Top 25 to Watch” in 2016 and Pointe Magazine’s “The Standouts of 2017” and performing in the Ninjinsky-Gala XLI in Hamburg, Germany, New York’s 2015 Fall for Dance Festival and 2018 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, to name a few.
COMPANY DANCERS EMILY BARROWS began dancing at the age of 8. Later, she enrolled in pre-professional programs at Festival Ballet Providence and Koltun Ballet Boston. Ms. Barrows has trained at a number of summer intensive programs including Orlando Ballet, Ballet Austin, Atlanta Ballet, and Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. She went on to join the conservatory program at Atlanta Ballet on full scholarship. She was offered a trainee position with Grand Rapids Ballet in 2017, and was promoted to apprentice in 2019. Ms. Barrows also performed with Minnesota Ballet.
COMPANY DANCERS SE HYUN JIN began her training at Daejeon Art High School, South Korea. She continued her training at the Kirov Academy of Ballet, in Washington, DC. Ms. Jin danced solo and principal roles with Milwaukee Ballet, Charleston City Ballet and Columbia Classical Ballet. Her repertoire includes such ballets as Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Romeo & Juliet and Don Quixote. ILSE KAPTEYN began her training at the East Street Ballet in Massachusetts. Her training continued with Irina Vakhromeeva while a student at Deerfield Academy and she attended summer programs at the School of American Ballet, the Chautauqua Institution, and American Ballet Theatre NY. Ilse traveled to Moscow in the summer of 2011 and was accepted at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. Ms. Kapteyn joined NJB in 2012.
CATHERINE WHITING trained at the NJ School of Ballet and also attended programs at the School of American Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. She was part of the school’s ensemble that took first place twice in the Youth Dance Festival of New Jersey. Ms. Whiting also won first place performing a pas de deux in that competition. Her repertory includes Fairy Doll, Le Corsaire and Don Quixote. She joined NJB in 2011. YUUKI YAMAMOTO trained at the Hakucho Ballet Academy in his native Japan. He was a finalist in the Japan Grand Prix and won a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey School in New York. He has appeared in Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Flames of Paris, Sleeping Beauty, Gopak, Nutcracker and many others. Mr. Yamamoto joined NJB in 2010.
TJ HAMMOND began his dance training at the age of three under the direction of Pelagie Green Wren in St. Louis, MO. At nine years of age, Mr. Hammond began his professional career as a seasonal performer with the Joffrey Ballet and an ensemble member with the St. Louis Municipal Opera Theatre. He later attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where he earned a B.F.A. in Dance Performance and a minor in Human Rights. ARTISTIC STAFF FOUNDER/DIRECTOR CAROLYN CLARK A native of New Jersey, Ms. Clark is Founder/Director of New Jersey Ballet Company and Director of New Jersey School of Ballet. Ms. Clark performed classical and contemporary ballet with American Ballet Theatre and toured with that company throughout North America, Scandinavia, Europe and Africa, in addition to tours in the US and Canada. Additional ballet company credits include the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Radio City Ballet, and as principal dancer with New Jersey Ballet and New Jersey State Opera. Ms. Clark’s professional credits also include Broadway musicals, and television shows, most notably The Bell Telephone Hour where she was assistant to the choreographer. She is a founding member of ArtPride New Jersey, served two years on the President’s Council on the Arts for the John F. Kennedy Center, and five years on the Advisory Board of Channel 13. Ms. Clark was honored in 1976 by Governor Brendan Byrne for her “unique contribution to the arts of the State of New Jersey.” She has also been honored with a New Jersey Pride Award, and by the National Society of Arts and Letters and DanceNJ. Ms. Kowroski was a guest artist with the Mariinsky ballet performing Swan Lake in 2003, a mixed Balanchine program in 2006 and 2019. In 1994 Ms. Kowroski was the recipient of the Princess Grace Award and in 2011 she received the Jerome Robbins award. Ms. Kowroski joined New Jersey Ballet Company as the Acting Artistic Director in November 2021. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR PAUL H. MCRAE trained at the San Francisco School of Ballet, New Jersey School of Ballet and the School of American Ballet. He became an apprentice with New Jersey Ballet at age 16. In 1974 joined Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, while there he attended Point Park College. In Pittsburgh he studied and worked with Nicholas Petrov, Frederic Franklin, Leonid Massine and John Gilpin. He rejoined New Jersey Ballet in 1978 performing a wide range of solo and principal roles in the Company’s extensive repertory. Named Assistant to the Director of New Jersey Ballet in 1990 and he became Assistant Director in September 2001. Mr. McRae is on the ballet faculty at New Jersey School of Ballet and for the past twenty years has been on the residence ballet faculty at Kean University. He is a cofounder and former President of Dance/New Jersey, a board member of Art Pride New Jersey and New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and he also serves as Co-Chair of the Arts Advisory Committee at Arts High School in Newark, New Jersey.
MARIA KOWROSKI Maria Kowroski was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she began her ballet training at age seven with the School of Grand Rapids Ballet. Ms. Kowroski entered the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, in the fall of 1992. She became an apprentice with New York City Ballet in the summer of 1994 and was invited to join the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in January of 1995. In 1968, the Bell Telephone Hour’s salute to Villella became an Emmy Award-winning special. His Harlequin – A Patchwork of Love, the first ballet ever commissioned by an American TV network, resulted in Emmy Awards for the show and for Villella as choreographer, producer and star! He is a former member of the President’s Council on the Arts and a past recipient of the prestigious Capezio Award. Mr. Villella is founder of Miami City Ballet and has been Artistic Advisor to New Jersey Ballet since 1972.
KOTOE KOJIMA-NOA (Marketing Director, Rehearsal Coach) was born in Japan and studied with New York City Ballet principals Valentina Kozlova and Leonid Kozlov. Ms. Kojima-Noa joined NJB during the 2001-2002 season and has danced many soloist and principal roles in Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Cinderella, Giselle, and Sleeping Beauty. She is a Rehearsal Coach for the company and is on the ballet faculty at New Jersey School of Ballet. This season she joins the staff as Marketing and Social Media Director.
DAVID TAMAKI (Managing Director) began his formal training at New Jersey School of Ballet at age 7 and became a member of the NJB Junior Company in 1998. A year later he joined the company and during his career danced principal roles, which include the Champion Roper in Rodeo, the Prince and Trepak in Nutcracker, Romeo & Juliet and Le Corsaire pas de deux to name a few. Mr. Tamaki is a ballet instructor for New Jersey School of Ballet and is Director of Advancement for NJB. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Mary’s College of California where graduated suma cum laude and holds a Master of Science in Nonprofit Management from Columbia University. Mr. Tamaki also leads NJ Ballet’s Dancing for Parkinson’s program, which provides free weekly dance classes to individuals with Parkinson’s disease.
TONI ANN AURIEMMA (School Administrator) Ms. Auriemma joined New Jersey School of Ballet in 1996. For over 20 years, Ms. Auriemma has applied her organizational skills managing the school's scheduling, billing, and client communications. She also organizes NJSB students and parent volunteers for company and school productions and rehearses the Clowns for New Jersey Ballet Company's Nutcracker. Ms. Auriemma majored in Business Administration at Montclair State University.
PEGGY CASEY (Wardrobe) has an extensive background in costume design and construction. Ms. Casey holds a BFA in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. NEW JERSEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Named “a vital, artistically significant musical organization” by The Wall Street Journal, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra embodies that vitality through its statewide presence and critically acclaimed performances, education partnerships and unparalleled access to music and the Orchestra’s superb musicians. Music Director Xian Zhang—a “dynamic podium presence” The New York Times has praised for her “technical abilities, musicianship and maturity”—continues her acclaimed leadership of the NJSO. The Orchestra presents classical, pops and family programs, as well as outdoor summer concerts and special events. Embracing its legacy as a statewide orchestra, the NJSO is the resident orchestra of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and regularly performs at State Theatre New Jersey in New Brunswick, Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, Richardson Auditorium in Princeton, Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown and bergenPAC in Englewood. Partnerships with New Jersey arts organizations, universities and civic organizations remain a key element of the Orchestra’s statewide identity. In addition to its lauded artistic programming, the NJSO presents a suite of education and community engagement programs that promote meaningful, lifelong engagement with live music. Programs include school-time Concerts for Young People and NJSO Youth Orchestras family of student ensembles, led by José Luis Domínguez. NJSO musicians annually perform original chamber music programs at community events in a variety of settings statewide through the NJSO Community Partners program. MPAC’S MISSION Mayo Performing Arts Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, presents a wide range of programs that entertain, enrich, and educate the diverse population of the region and enhance the economic vitality of Northern New Jersey. The 2021-2022 season is made possible, in part, by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as support received from the F.M. Kirby Foundation and numerous other foundations, corporations, and individuals.
MPAC EDUCATION
MPAC is dedicated to providing exceptional arts education to children and adults of all ages and abilities. Our Performing Arts School (PAS), founded in 2006, is a performance-based theatrical training program which serves approximately 700 students per year with over 20 classes a week within a supportive and creative atmosphere.
