Company History For more than half a century, New Jersey Ballet has thrilled audiences from Bergen to Cape May with world-class professional ballet. The Company’s programming has given hundreds of thousands of adults and children their first introduction to ballet and inspired in many a lifelong love of the arts. New Jersey Ballet has also taken the best of New Jersey Arts to audiences in other parts of the country and set records on international tours to Bermuda, India, Italy, Russia and Taiwan. The founding of New Jersey Ballet created a profound change in the state’s cultural landscape. New Jersey Ballet’s Founder, Carolyn Clark, established and grew the ballet company to become New Jersey’s premier ballet company. Her vision and leadership led to an immense expansion of classical and contemporary repertory over the years. New Jersey Ballet has brought the magic of dance theatre to countless students, children and adults of all ages inspiring in many a lifelong appreciation of the arts. Each season, New Jersey Ballet’s critically acclaimed dancers perform a variety of works from classical, contemporary and jazz as well as new works from world renowned choreographers. The Company’s repertory includes works choreographed by some of the greatest names in the world of dance: Balanchine, de Mille, Tudor, Nebrada, North, Pourfarrokh, Taras, Sappington, Renvall, Tomal, Vernon, Vesak, Petipa, Chabukiany, Saint Leon and Bournonville. New Jersey Ballet is also home to one of the largest collections of ballets for young audiences. The Company’s artistic advisor is one of the greatest international dancers of the 20th century; Edward Villella. Mr. Villella, an international star of New York City Ballet, performed in New Jersey Ballet’s first production of Nutcracker in 1971. In 2021, former New York City Ballet Principal Dancer Maria Kowroski joined New Jersey Ballet as Acting Artistic Director, and became Artistic Director in September 2022. Barbara Gilford, dance writer for The New York Times' New Jersey Weekly section for more than ten years wrote this about the impact and value New Jersey Ballet has for New Jersey: “New Jersey Ballet Company is the ONLY dance organization in the New York metropolitan area that takes high quality programming and performances to urban, rural and suburban communities throughout New Jersey (and at a cost that is “affordable” in comparison with the major organizations in New York City who are at home at Lincoln Center). Residents of our state have access to a three-hundred year-old dance tradition, frequently on their doorsteps. New Jersey Ballet is an assemblage of professional dancers who embody the highest standards of technique and artistry and they are OURS!!!”

Story of Nutcracker The story begins at a Christmas Eve party at the home of the Stahlbaum Family with their children Clara and Fritz. Everyone is engaged in games and dancing when Clara’s godfather Drosselmeyer arrives with a handsome prince. Drosselmeyer, a magician and toymaker brings a life size porcelain doll and soldier doll to entertain the guests. He distributes presents to all of the children except for Clara. Drosselmeyer gives her a handsome wooden Nutcracker. In an act of jealousy Fritz steals the Nutcracker and breaks it. The prince helps Clara tuck the broken Nutcracker into the doll’s bed. As the festivities unwind, the guests leave and the Stahlbaum family retires for the night. As the empty living room grows dark, Clara returns for one last look at her beloved Nutcracker. She falls asleep on the sofa and this is when Drosselmeyer’s magic begins to unfold. Giant mice appear from behind the fireplace, child-size toy soldiers pursue the mice and the Christmas tree begins to grow, higher and higher, until it towers over Clara. The room transforms as everything disappears except the now giant Nutcracker who leads the toy soldiers into battle against the mice. During the battle the Mouse King knocks the Nutcracker to the ground. Clara wanting to save her beloved Nutcracker distracts the Mouse King long enough so the Nutcracker can win the battle. Drosselmeyer then appears and transforms the Nutcracker into the handsome prince Clara met at the Christmas Eve party. As they pass through the forest, swirling snowflakes dance a splendid waltz led by the King and Queen of the Snowflakes. Clara and her prince journey to the Kingdom of the Sweets and are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Sugar Plum Fairy leads them to a beautiful throne, where they are entertained by: Hot Chocolate from Spain, Coffee from Arabia, Tea from China, Mirlitons, Trepak and the Mother Ginger with her clowns. Then comes the Waltz of the Flowers, with a shimmering Dewdrop leading the beautiful blooms and finally the grand pas de deux with the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. The Divertissements join in a final waltz and Clara and her prince sail away in a magical swan boat.
