Welcome to another spectacular season at MPAC! As a nonprofit performing arts center at the heart of our community, it is with tremendous pride that we serve as the cornerstone to a thriving arts district in Morristown. With over 200 performances, 60 classes, two dozen art exhibitions and nearly two dozen free events annually, MPAC is where our family, friends and neighbors come to enjoy, be inspired by and participate in the arts. Now in our 24th season, our commitment as an essential community partner continues to be a core value to our mission. For example, this past summer we launched our Arts in the Community initiative, a series of over 15 free concerts, movies and events for the community. This included diverse world music at the Morristown Green, emerging and innovative artists at 70 South Gallery, movies at MPAC and outdoor evening events at Vail. Overall, over 5,000 people attended these free events that included poetry, reggae, classical guitar and even salsa dancing. We are committed to providing arts experiences by and for the diverse populations we serve. Our Education programs, which include performing arts training, student recognition, youth productions and more, provide cultural enrichment to young people at a time when arts programs are often on the chopping block in school districts. We continue to find new ways to expand these programs throughout our region. The addition of The Miracle Project New Jersey and relaxed performances has been another exciting step toward providing opportunities of diversity, equity and inclusion. This award-winning innovative program for individuals on the autism spectrum and with other special needs is just the beginning of what we hope to achieve in this area. MPAC has also been proactive in creating work opportunities for adults with special needs and other barriers to employment. We thank you for your enthusiastic support of our venue and for returning year after year. Each season, we strive to make a difference, create a memory, inspire a child and dazzle an audience. I hope that the performance you are about to enjoy fulfills that promise. Warm Regards,

Allison Larena President & CEO

JOSH GATES: AN EVENING OF LEGENDS, MYSTERIES AND TALES OF ADVENTURE ABOUT JOSH Josh Gates is an avid explorer whose unique brand of humor and deep-rooted passion for adventure propels him to the farthest corners of the world. Discovery Channel’s hit-series Expedition Unknown chronicles Gates as he sets out on a global quest to find the truth behind iconic legends and thrilling archaeological mysteries. This season is Josh’s most ambitious yet, as he undertakes a search for a long-lost ghost ship in the Great Lakes, uncovers new revelations about the birth of Jesus, and searches for a sunken civilization rumored to be the Atlantis of the Andes. From a fabled pirate treasure in the jungles of Panama to the truth behind the controversial legend of the crystal skull, Josh is spinning the globe and heading off-the-map in search of answers. In the four-part global event Expedition Unknown: Search for the Afterlife, Gates tackles mankind’s ultimate mystery as he investigates ancient rituals, paranormal claims, and cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs on the nature of death and consciousness. Josh will also be helming a two-part special in Israel and Jordan working alongside archaeologists attempting to decipher the Dead Sea Scrolls and to uncover new fragments in remote desert caves. An avid scuba diver and photographer, Gates has participated in sub-sea archaeological excavations in the Mediterranean, and his wanderlust has taken him to over 100 countries - from sweltering African deserts to the icy

shores of Antarctica. In addition, he has scaled “the roof of Africa” on Mt. Kilimanjaro and climbed Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in the Americas. A mysterious “Yeti” footprint recovered by Josh in the Himalayas is now on display at the “Expedition Everest” attraction at Walt Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida. In 2016, Gates won ‘Best Host’ in the CableFax Program Awards for Expedition Unknown, and the series also took home the ‘Best Educational/Instructional Show’ award and in 2018, a Cynopsis TV Award for ‘Best Reality Series – Travel.’ He holds a degree from Tufts University in Archaeology and is a member of The Explorers Club – a prestigious organization dedicated to the advancement of exploration and field research. Josh also serves as a trustee on the governing board of the Archaeological Institute of America. Josh is also the host of Legendary Locations on Travel Channel where he shares the epic tales and secrets of the most storied places on earth, showcasing the ancient legends and folklore that made them famous. Travel Channel also airs episodes of Gates’ popular series, Josh Gates’ Destination Truth. He has appeared on the TODAY Show, CNN and a variety of other national television and radio programs. Gates’ adventures are chronicled in his bestselling book, Destination Truth: Memoirs of a Monster Hunter (Simon & Schuster, 2011). Gates currently resides with his wife and children in Los Angeles, California and on airport floors around the world.

THE MAGIC OF ADAM TRENT Adam Trent shatters stereotypes and brings a new generation of magic to fans fusing technology illusions, dancing and comedy with classic techniques. Adam looks to change people’s perception of magicians with his refreshing approach to magic; entertainment first and tricks second. He doesn’t want people to remember “tricks” as much as the laughs and memories made with the performance. He has mesmerized live audiences around the globe, in person and as a featured guest on America’s Got Talent, The Today Show, Ellen, the Travel Channel and Disney Channel among countless other TV appearances. The 32-yearold also stars in his own 10 episode TV series ‘The Road Trick’ on Red Bull TV. Adam doesn’t remember a time in his life when he wasn’t performing, starting with birthday party shows at age 9 and bigger events when he was 13. At age 14, he started street performances which he says “was the most

amazing and brutal training a performer could ever have.” Through this experience, he discovered an audience’s true attention span and when he was 18, went to a Los Angeles college for a degree in finance and entertainment marketing. “Apart from learning that a tiger would be tax-deductible, I got a crash course in LA’s music and comedy scene. I realized that the most important element in a show is the performer’s connection to the audience, and without that even amazing skill can fall as flat as a bad boy band.” Information about The Magic of Adam Trent can be found on: Facebook: /adamtrentmagic; Twitter: @adamtrentmagic; Instagram: @adamtrentmagic; Tour hashtag: #AdamTrentMagic Photos & Videos: https://www.adamtrent.com

The ASERE Story Drawing their inspiration from traditional Cuban music, seven young musicians formed Asere in the 1990s to create roots music with a contemporary feel while respectfully maintaining the style and passion of the music of their forefathers. Retaining acoustic instruments, they wrote new songs and inventive arrangements, developing a sound for a new generation, and delivered it with an explosive punch. Their fresh energy, endearing personality and powerful performances soon attracted attention in France and the UK. From there Asere went on to perform all over the world, from Norway to Sri Lanka. After a successful debut tour of the US in 2016 with the Havana Cuba All Stars show, the band has returned this year in response to popular demand. Asere has concentrated mainly on the musical heritage of the son style. Son combines African rhythms with song structures from the Spanish musical tradition. Originating in rural eastern Cuba at the end of the 19th century, son became a highly fashionable dance form, taking the elegant salónes of Havana by storm in the early decades of the 20th century. In the 1970s son became one of the key ingredients

of salsa, which emerged out of the Latin scene in New York. Asere also incorporates into its repertoire other Cuban styles such as nueva trova, cha cha chá, changuí, pilón and guaguancó. All these distinct rhythms add to the richness of Cuban culture with their own stories and context. Nueva trova, a contemporary ballad style featuring singersongwriter troubadours, evolved from son, principally in Havana. Changuí comes from a campesino tradition in and around the hills of Guantánamo Province. Guaguancó is an AfroCuban groove originating in the marginalized black communities in the dock areas of Havana and Matanzas. Cha cha chá evolved as a popular dance style in the early 1950s. Over the last three decades Asere has developed Cuban musical traditions in its own unique way and collaborated with many different artists, including the majestic Colombian singer Totó la Momposina and legendary the PanamanianAmerican drummer Billy Cobham. The word asere (pronounced ah-séré), from the Efik dialect of the Afro-Cuban sect Abakua, is used as a greeting in Cuba.

LEGENDS IN CONCERT: A TRIBUTE TO NEIL DIAMOND, CHER, DOLLY PARTON AND KENNY ROGERS CHER Performed by Lisa McClowry Lisa McClowry is a life-long singer/entertainer with over 30 years in the entertainment industry as a trusted, reliable source and talent. Lisa is continually described by her peers as a visionary, a trailblazer, creative and business minded all-in-one, and an exemplary leader and team player. In January, 2016, Lisa made an official shift in her music career from “recording artist”, supporting her original music CD releases, touring and live performances to currently developing live theme-based shows/concerts which she produces and performs. Her series of show releases began in July, 2015, with her “Lisa McClowry Rock the 80s” Show. The brand new venture has allowed Lisa to use her background in songwriting, theater and dance, weaving her music related skills into the live shows/concerts which she now offers and performs. In addition, these performances showcase her knack for creating unique moments on stage, her warmth, essence, dynamic voice and strong stage presence. These are just a few of the words her audience has used to describe what makes Lisa’s performances so captivating and engaging. Passion, drive and commitment have been the backbone to Lisa’s success paving her years of experience as an “on stage” talent. What might come as a surprise to some, Lisa enjoys having her hand in every aspect of her shows.

Now, she’s been cast in regional and national commercials, acted in the Murder Mystery Dinner Theater shows at the House of Blues, featured in“The Dean Martin Show”at the Palace Theatre, and performed as an impersonator for “Dino’s TV Variety Show”. She was in the offBroadway hit “The Marvelous Wonderettes”, and was the understudy for both female roles in “Golf: The Musical”. Not to mention, she has been the opening act for recording artists such as Trace Adkins and Ricky Van Shleton. Harnessing this wide array of professional experience, and topping it off with outstanding costumes, wigs and makeup, Karen brings her Dolly Parton act to life for Legends in Concert. Come hear her sing Dolly’s best, and prepare to be impressed.

KENNY ROGERS Performed by Mark Hinds Mark Hinds has been performing a Tribute to Kenny Rogers for the past 20 years. It all started in Gaylord, Michigan in 1979 when given the opportunity to perform as Kenny Rogers at a ski resort would change his life forever. Mark has performed at numerous Moose, Elk and Eagles Lodges perfecting his act and gained much notoriety as the only Kenny Rogers tribute artist in the country. Since joining Legends in Concert in 1981 Mark has traveled all over the world amazing audiences with his impression of the famed country singer. Mark has been on stage twice with Kenny including a gig at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville where he was a part of Charlie DOLLY PARTON Chases’ Funny Business Show and was asked to Performed by Karen Hester embarrass Kenny on national T.V. It was highly Karen Hester, performing as Dolly Parton on successful as 4500 Rogers’ fans were stunned to the Legends stage, has a truly magnificent see two of their favorite entertainers standing stage presence. On her way to becoming one together side by side singing one of Kenny’s of Legends’ best Dolly tribute artists; she has biggest hits “The Gambler.” impressed crowds country-wide, time and NEIL DIAMOND time again. Coming from a family of musical people Performed by Rob Garrett where everyone either picked up an Born and raised in New York City Rob started instrument or sang along to the tune of playing the guitar at the age of 14. He had many the hour, the stage is as close to her heart musical influences growing up, including Elvis, as her son. She started by singing at family The Beatles, and quite naturally Neil Diamond. reunions, gospel quartets and trios, and then Rob and his family moved to Las Vegas in 1974 started venturing into theatrical productions and formed the group “Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven” in and country music. Drawing inspiration from 1980. The group was the city's premiere “oldies” Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Martina McBride & classic rock group for the next 15 years with and Dolly Parton, as Karen grew, so did her Rob achieving prominence as the leader and passion for music and performance. front man.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2019 Rob first saw Neil Diamond when he made his Las Vegas debut opening the “Theater for the Performing Arts” at the Aladdin Hotel and Casino in 1976. Garrett said, “He held the audience, including myself, spellbound and broke all existing Las Vegas concert records at that time. I had been a fan since 1969 and I’d always thought that he had written some of the most poignant lyrics I’d ever heard. I felt that he had a way of expressing his lyrics and music in a way that no other singer/songwriter had done so before or since.” “Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven” covered a very wide spectrum of music and, “I did some singing impressions and would always get the strongest response when I performed my “Neil” imitation.” In 1995 Garrett was personally hired by Paul Revere (of “The Raiders”) to portray Neil Diamond in the biggest and most popular “impersonation” type show in the world, “Legends In Concert”. The venue was Honolulu, Hawaii, and the show is that city’s largest and best theatrical show. What was to be a twomonth “trial” engagement for Rob ended up being “indefinite.” “Neil’s a phenomenon as witnessed by any of his recent sold out concerts. Anytime he decides

to hit the tour circuit he breaks attendance records and always ends up as one of the top 5 money grossing concert attractions of the year. He has become this polished consummate performer who doesn’t rely on big production and choreography to make his show work. He’s the last of the breed that I refer to as minstrels, the performers who get on the stage for 2 hours plus with just their guitars and backup band and can still bring an audience to its knees. He’s still got it, but unfortunately it seems as if he’s touring less often these days and when he does tour it’s in select places and always sold out way in advance. A lot of people who would like never get the chance to see him perform. I love the challenge of re-creating the performances of this great musical legend who I hope still has many years of performances left in him.” In August of 1998 Rob decided to return home to Las Vegas where he continues to perform as Neil Diamond. Currently he is co-producing (with “Legends” founder John Stuart) and directing his first “Legends In Concert” show which will be opening in Brazil, the first production of its kind to reach South America.

Utilizing the Collaborative Divorce process and Mediation, her practice is dedicated to helping families define realistic goals and develop the strategies for accomplishing them, always keeping the children’s best interest foremost.

Kids Come First Using mediation or the collaborative process for divorce allows parents to focus on their children’s unique needs and maintain family bonds while establishing their new lives.

Mediation

When divorcing couples are non-adversarial and agree to divorce, a mediator can focus the couple on the issues that need resolution without the trauma that may occur in litigation.

Collaborative Divorce A new way to divorce - both parties have attorney advocates and use a team approach to resolve issues, preserve the family relationship and establish strong foundations for the entire family’s future.

JACKIE EVANCHO: AN EVENING WITH THE NEW AMERICAN SONGBOOK A worldwide sensation when she was only ten years old, Jackie Evancho has moved past the exuberant promise of a child prodigy vocalist, becoming a mature young adult with a clear direction as to where she, as a creative artist, is taking her career as a singer. A career that began with a little girl’s fascination with the film soundtrack of The Phantom of the Opera and has become an evolving and enduring musical phenomenon. Since she first dazzled American television audiences at the age of 10 – gaining global recognition with her stunning debut on NBC’s America’s Got Talent – Jackie Evancho has released a string of platinum and gold albums, with sales of over 3 million in the US. Along the way, she has also made history – the youngest solo platinum artist; the youngest Top 5 debut artist ever in the U.K.; the youngest person to give solo concert at Lincoln Center; the highest-ranking debut artist of 2010. All seven of Jackie’s albums have hit No. 1 on the Billboard Classical chart. The magnitude of her success led Billboard twice (in 2010 and 2012) to include Jackie on its list of “music moversand-shakers under the age of 21.” Jackie Evancho’s meteoric rise is already a show business legend. YouTube video stardom led to her spectacular, against-the-odds appearance on America’s Got Talent in 2010 that delivered the heat and the promise of a new star, in a luminous performance of the beloved Puccini aria “O mio babbino caro.” Her breakthrough was transformed quickly into the basis for a serious career. In less than a decade, Jackie has made seven chart-topping albums and DVDs, headlined three PBS television specials, appeared in the film The Company We Keep at the request of her co-star Robert Redford, and tirelessly toured the world, singing for Presidents, other world leaders and her fans everywhere. In addition to her solo success, Jackie has recorded duets with such notable artists as Tony Bennett, Plácido Domingo, Barbra Streisand, Chris Botti, and Joshua Bell. The success of the angelic little blonde girl from Pittsburgh has defied the odds. Her first major-label recording, O Holy Night, made Jackie the top-selling debut artist of 2010, with the EP album entering the Billboard 200 chart at No. 2 – the youngest solo artist ever to debut in the Top 5. With sales of more than a quarter of a million copies in its first week, O Holy Night was certified a platinum record, and Jackie Evancho became youngest performer ever to go platinum in the U.S.

Dream with Me was Jackie’s first full-length album for Sony Music, produced by David Foster, who first encountered her before her breakthrough when she was only nine. Debuting at No. 2 in the Billboard 200, the album confirmed the success of O Holy Night, featuring duets with Barbra Streisand and Susan Boyle and bringing Jackie a platinum record and international acclaim – the youngest album performer ever to debut in the Top 5 in the U.K. The success of Dream with Me established a benchmark for how her career would unfold, a multimedia blitz that took her to television’s best-rated programs, a PBS special and a distinctive tour of sold-out top concert venues around the world. The formula has also driven the success of Jackie’s albums that followed – Heavenly Christmas, Songs from the Silver Screen and Awakening – all expanding her repertoire, her collaborations with artists and writers, and her worldwide audience. Jackie’s sixth album – Someday at Christmas – continued her unbroken streak of No. 1 titles on the Billboard Classical Album chart. Someday at Christmas brought together her favorite holiday tracks, including a remarkable collaboration with Plácido Domingo, as well as three new tracks including the Stevie Wonder title song and a version of “The Little Drummer Boy” with the group Il Volo. Jackie’s most recent album Two Hearts, features popular hits both old and new, and classical crossover Italian songs, but also Jackie’s emerging gifts as a collaborative songwriter. With the release of Two Hearts, the amazing journey of Jackie Evancho reached an exciting new place, both creatively and personally. The album’s title says a lot about growth: Jackie’s heart is always in the classical crossover singing her fans love, but she is discovering another facet of her work, her range and, thus, her heart – a love of songwriting and a new, expressive pop sound. Jackie is currently in the studio working on her next album - an album of contemporary theater songs. Songs from Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Waitress, Greatest Showman, Wicked, Rent, Spring Awakening. As an 18-year-old, Jackie wants to embrace what she considers the new American songbook. Jackie is the first recording artist to embrace this new and very popular emerging genre. Throughout her emerging career, Jackie Evancho has sought to broaden her experience

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2019 and embrace new challenges. In 2012, she decided to try her hand at both acting and modeling, and the following year performed as part of an unprecedented Cirque du Soleil extravaganza at the Bellagio’s “O” Theatre to support “One Night for One Drop” on World Water Day. Jackie made her feature film debut in 2013 when Robert Redford cast her as his daughter The Company You Keep, a thriller that featured her in a cast that included Susan Sarandon, Shia LaBeouf, Anna Kendrick, Terrance Howard, Nick Nolte and Stanley Tucci. The same year, GUESS owner Paul Marciano selected Jackie to star in the Fall 2012 GUESS Kids clothing campaigns. “I have had so much fun and done so many challenging things,” Jackie said at the end of that year. “But while I really enjoyed all the traveling and the acting and had such a great time posing in all those great clothes for GUESS, singing is still the thing I love the most.” Jackie Evancho sang for Pope Francis I during his US visit and, a few years before, performed at the lighting of the National Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C., where she sang for – and delighted – President Barack Obama and his

family. Two months later, she was again invited to perform for the President and Congressional leaders during the National Prayer Breakfast. She was also invited to perform on Oprah Winfrey’s farewell special. In early 2012, Jackie was selected to represent the US in Russia at the opening of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum. She performed in front of 100,000 people prior to the Forum’s opening, singing with two international opera stars, Russia’s Dmitri Hvorostovsky of Russia and South Korea’s Sumi Jo. Jackie’s fan base also extends to Japan, where she was invited to perform for the Royal Family at the Imperial Palace, as well as sold-out performances with the Tokyo Philharmonic. Jackie Evancho is in many ways a typical young adult: she splits her time between Pittsburgh and New York so that she can be closer to the creative community while at the same time being close to her family. She is continuing her education in the midst of touring and recording. And her heart opens itself to more than music: Jackie is a proud supporter of her transgender sister Juliet and the struggle for transgender equality.

Steve Martin’s 2018 Netflix special with Martin Short titled An Evening You Will Forget For The Rest Of Your Life received 4 Emmy nominations in 2018.

MARTIN SHORT Martin Short, a celebrated comedian and actor, has won fans and accolades in television, film and theater since his breakout season on Saturday Night Live over 30 years ago. Short won his first Emmy in 1982 while working on Canada’s SCTV Comedy Network, which brought him to the attention of the producers of SNL. He became an SNL fan-favorite for his portrayal of characters such as Ed Grimley, lawyer Nathan Thurm and “legendary songwriter” Irving Cohen. His popularity and exposure on SNL led Short to cross over quickly into feature films. He made his debut in Three Amigos and followed with Innerspace, Three Fugitives, Clifford, Pure Luck and Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks. One of Short’s most memorable roles was in the remake of Father of the Bride as Franck the

wedding planner, a role he reprised a few years later in Father of the Bride Part II. Short lent his voice to the animated film Madagascar 3 and Tim Burton’s Oscar-nominated Frankenweenie. Short’s voice is also featured in the animated holiday film Elliot: The Littlest Reindeer, which hit theatres November 2018. An accomplished stage actor, Short won a Tony, Theatre World Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for his role in the revival of Little Me. He was also nominated for a Tony and took home an Outer Critics Circle Award for the musical version of Neil Simon’s The Goodbye Girl. Short co-wrote and starred in Fame Becomes Me, prompting The New York Times to describe Short as “a natural for live musicals, a limber singer and dancer who exudes a fiery energy that makes you want to reach for your sunglasses.”

FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2019 Short most recently appeared on Broadway in Terrence McNally’s It’s Only a Play. A two-time primetime Emmy winner and multi-nominated for both primetime and daytime Emmys, Short returned to television in 1998 for the miniseries Merlin and host of The Martin Short Show. In 2001, he launched the popular comedy Primetime Glick and in 2010 received critical acclaim for his role in FX’s drama series Damages. Short has also returned to SNL as host three times, and performed in the series’ landmark 40th anniversary special in February 2015. Other recent television credits include Hairspray Live!, Maya & Marty, Mulaney, How I Met Your Mother

and the critically acclaimed PBS series Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That. Short’s New York Times bestselling memoir, I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend, was published in 2014. In 1994, Short was awarded the Order of Canada — the Canadian equivalent to British knighthood. He was also inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame in June 2000. In 2017, he received a Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award from the Governor-general of Canada. Short’s Netflix special with Steve Martin titled An Evening You Will Forget For The Rest Of Your Life received 4 Emmy nominations in 2018.

SCHAROUN ENSEMBLE BERLIN REPERTOIRE Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115 Schubert Octet in F Major, D. 803 Founded in 1983 by members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Scharoun Ensemble is one of Germany’s leading chamber-music organizations. With its wide repertoire, ranging from composers of the Baroque period by way of Classical and Romantic chamber music to contemporary works, the Scharoun Ensemble has been inspiring audiences in Europe and overseas for more than a quarter of a century. Innovative programming, a refined tonal culture and spirited interpretations are hallmarks of the ensemble, which performs in a variety of instrumental combinations. The permanent core of the Scharoun Ensemble is a classical octet (clarinet, bassoon, horn, two violins, viola, cello and double bass), made up entirely of members of the Berlin Philharmonic. When called for, the ensemble brings in additional instrumentalists as well as noted conductors. The Scharoun Ensemble has prepared and presented various programmes under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim and Pierre Boulez. It has also performed with singers including Thomas Quasthoff, Annette Dasch, Simon Keenlyside and Barbara Hannigan, and, for interdisciplinary projects, the ensemble has engaged such artists as Fanny Ardant, Loriot and Dominique Horwitz. Bridging the gap between tradition and the modern is the Scharoun Ensemble’s principal artistic focus. It has given world premieres of many 20th- and 21st-century compositions while dedicating itself with equal passion to the interpretation of works from past centuries. Among the cornerstones of its repertoire are Franz Schubert’s Octet d803, with which the ensemble made its public debut in 1983, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Septet Op.20. Cultivating an active contact with today’s composers has been a matter of special interest to the Scharoun Ensemble since its inception. György Ligeti, Hans Werner Henze, Pierre Boulez, György Kurtág and Wolfgang Rihm have accompanied the group on its artistic journey, as have composers of the younger generation

including Jörg Widmann and Matthias Pintscher. Complementing the Scharoun Ensemble’s brisk international concert activity is its annual residence at and artistic directorship of the Zermatt Festival, founded in 2005. Along with concerts by major artists, each summer’s festival includes musical workshops offering young musicians the chance to work with the members of the Scharoun Ensemble. Lending his name to the Scharoun Ensemble is the architect of its musical home. In designing the Berlin Philharmonie, Hans Scharoun (1893-1972) created a concert hall that was unique in the world, undertaking a synthesis between innovation and awareness of tradition and opening up new approaches to artistic communication – ideals to which the Scharoun Ensemble is also committed. --WOLFRAM BRANDL was born in Würzburg in 1975. Before joining the first-violin section of the Berlin Philharmonic, he had been leader of the Federal Youth Orchestra. He received his first violin lessons from his father when he was nine. A scholarship from the Jürgen Ponto Foundation enabled him to continue his studies with UweMartin Haiberg at the Academy of the Arts in Berlin. He has appeared as a soloist with various orchestras and has received a number of awards not only for these appearances but also for his work as a member of the Trio Echnaton. Violinist RACHEL SCHMIDT completed her musical studies with Valery Klimov at the Hochschule für Musik in Saarbrücken and with Thomas Brandis at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. The winner of numerous competitions, she received further encouragement as a scholar at the Villa Musica of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate and in master courses given by Ruggiero Ricci, Ida Haendel and Isaac Stern. Rachel Schmidt joined the Berlin Philharmonic in 2001 and became a member of the Scharoun Ensemble in 2010. MICHA AFKHAM was born in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1979 and was five years old when he received his first violin lessons. He studied

THURSDAY, MARCH 7, 2019 the viola with Hatto Beyerle in Hanover and later with Tabea Zimmermann at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. More than once he has won Germany’s Jugend Musiziert Competition and was also a prizewinner at the International Viola Competition at Bled in Slovenia. He has held scholarships from the Musikleben Foundation, the Villa Musica and the Karajan Academy in Berlin. Numerous masterclasses with artists of the stature of Yuri Bashmet, Wolfram Christ, Serge Collot and Herman Krebbers have completed his artistic training. As a chamber recitalist, Micha Afkham has performed with Isabelle Faust, Tabea Zimmermann, Boris Pergamenschikow and Claudio Bohorquez, among others. He has also appeared with Gidon Kremer and the Beaux Arts Trio at the Chamber Music Connects the World Festival and with Emmanuel Pahud at SalondeProvence. He has been a member of the Berlin Philharmonic since 2004 and joined the Scharoun Ensemble in 2006. Cellist CLAUDIO BOHÓRQUEZ, born in Germany of Peruvian-Uruguayan descent is one of the leading musicians in his field internationally. Being a graduate of Boris Pergamenschikow, Claudio Bohórquez has won numerous first prizes in international competitions, such as the International Music Competition in Geneva and the International Pablo Casals Cello Competition at the Kronberg Academy. In addition to his soloist- and chamber music activities, he is also in demand as a professor. Bohórquez has been teaching at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart from 2011 to 2016 and since September 2016 he is professor at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin. CD recordings by Bohórquez have been released by EMI, Deutsche Grammophon and BerlinClassics. Claudio Bohórquez plays a violoncello by G. B. Rogeri, which is provided to him by Landeskreditbank Baden-Württemberg. PETER RIEGELBAUER was born in Central Franconia and studied with Georg Hörtnagel in Nuremberg and with Rainer Zepperitz in Berlin. He gained a scholarship from the Berlin Philharmonic’s Orchestral Academy and even during this early period was already taking part in the orchestra’s concerts, becoming a permanent member in 1981. Two years later he and seven of his colleagues formed the Scharoun Ensemble of Berlin. He has been a member of the BPO’s board since 1997.

ALEXANDER BADER learnt to play the piano before studying the clarinet at the Academy of the Arts in Berlin. Among the teachers who had a particularly formative influence on him are Manfred Preis and Peter Rieckhoff. In 1990, while he was studying for his soloist’s diploma at the State Academy of Music in Karlsruhe, he became a member of the German Chamber Philharmonic in Bremen. In 1998 he and the orchestra’s other wind soloists received an Echo Classics Award. He joined the Komische Oper in Berlin in 2002 as the house’s principal clarinettist, while at the same time appearing regularly with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and the Munich Philharmonic, among others. Alexander Bader became a member of the Berlin Philharmonic in 2006. Since 1994 he has additionally taken an interest in historically informed performance practice on period instruments, in which capacity he has appeared on a regular basis with ensembles such as the Concentus Musicus of Vienna, the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble and the Academy of Ancient Music in Berlin. He joined the Scharoun Ensemble at the start of the 2006/7 season. MARKUS WEIDMANN studied the bassoon with Klaus Thunemann at the Academy of Music in Hanover. Between 1993 and 1995 he held a scholarship with the Berlin Philharmonic’s Orchestral Academy, during which time he studied with Stefan Schweigert. Before joining the Berlin Philharmonic, he played with the European Union Youth Orchestra, the Kiel Philharmonic and the South-West German Philharmonic in Konstanz. As a chamber musician, Markus Weidmann has also appeared with the Gutenberg Ensemble and the Philharmonic Octet. He has been a member of the Scharoun Ensemble since 2006. The horn player STEFAN DE LEVAL JEZIERSKI was born in Boston in 1954 and began his music studies at the North Carolina School of the Arts in 1970. From 1972 he studied under Myron Bloom at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where in 1975 he won the Cleveland Institute of Music Competition with his performance of Mozart’s Horn Concerto K447 in the city’s Severance Hall. The orchestra was made up of members of the Cleveland Orchestra, with whom he appeared in numerous concerts and on tour during his final year as a student. He completed his studies

SCHAROUN ENSEMBLE BERLIN in Cleveland in 1976 and immediately joined the Kassel Staatstheater Orchestra as principal horn player. Two years later he was engaged by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic and quickly found himself working with almost every leading conductor. Both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, Stefan de Leval Jezierski has performed throughout Europe, Asia and America. In 1983 he and seven of his colleagues formed the Scharoun Ensemble of Berlin. In 1992 he became a founding member of the Berlin Haydn Ensemble and since 1995 has been principal horn with the Berlin Philharmonic’s

Wind Octet. In September 2000 he gave the world premiere of Thomas M. Sleeper’s Horn Concerto in Miami, Florida, with the Miami Festival Orchestra. A recording of the work, which is dedicated to him, was released in 2003. His development as a musician is charted by countless recordings, including gramophone records, CDs, videos, television broadcasts and live recordings. In addition to his career in classical music, Stefan de Leval Jezierski is an enthusiastic jazz musician. He also enjoys playing tennis.
