Taped live from studios in New York City, “The Wendy Williams Show” is a reflection of Williams’ entertaining personality and distinctive sense of humor. It has become the must-see talk show in daytime! The focus on entertainment and pop culture exemplifies Williams’ passion for those topics. The shows signature segments include Hot Topics, which feature Wendy’s own “Say It Like You Mean It” take on the juiciest celebrity headlines, and Ask Wendy where she offers real advice to audience members looking for answers. The show also includes a diverse mix of interviews with celebrity guests from television, film, music, and sports. Renewed through 2017, it is the only syndicated talk show this season to have achieved year-toyear national growth in W25-54 ratings. In 2015, both Williams and the show earned Daytime Emmy® nominations for “Best Talk Show Host” and “Best Entertainment Talk Show.” Williams is also the only daytime talk show host to have items from the show inducted into the Smithsonian Institute. Prior to achieving success in daytime television, Williams built a devoted fan base throughout a successful 23-year career in radio. “The Wendy Williams Experience” was Williams’ top-rated, daily radio show. Syndicated nationally, it aired on WBLS in New York and was listened to by an audience of more than 12 million people. One of the most popular personalities in radio, she was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in November of 2009 – one of only a handful of women with that honor. Williams continues to grow her brand with her keen eye and sense of style. This year, working exclusively with HSN, Williams launched her own clothing collection, “Wendy Williams”. From apparel that will take you from weekday to weekend, the designs are vibrant, classic, figure flattering and versatile for every occasion. She created

this collection so that women of all ages and sizes can wear it. Also new to Williams’ repertoire is her onewoman comedy show. This summer marks the beginning of her “Sit Down Tour”—Too Real for Stand Up. Williams will visit cities across the country and share straight talk as only she can. In Spring 2014, Williams released her seventh book and first romance novel, “Hold Me In Contempt” (Harper Collins). It became a New York Times Best Seller the first day of its’ release. Expanding her media footprint, Williams and her husband Kevin launched the non-fiction television programming company, Wendy Williams Productions (WWP) in 2013. Recent projects include, the Lifetime original movie, “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B” and the newly green lit series, “Death By Gossip with Wendy Williams” that will premiere in the fall of 2015 on Investigation Discovery. With TV, Broadway and film performances to her name, Williams is a seasoned performer, both as herself and in character. Her television credits include appearances on NBC’s “30 Rock” as herself, competing on Season 12 of ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars,” hosting Game Show Network’s original series “Love Triangle,” and appearing as a featured guest on ABC’s “One Life to Live” and Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva.” Wendy also appeared in the major motion picture, Steve Harvey’s “Think Like A Man,” “Think Like A Man Too” and took center stage as Mama Morton in the Tony-winning revival of the musical “Chicago.”

Martina McBride: The Everlasting Tour What Martina McBride intended her latest album to be was a simple gift, but what she wound up with is a timeless treasure. The multi-million selling vocalist gathered a group of enduring musical chestnuts and assembled a small band to record them live in the studio. The result, a collection titled Everlasting, is a stunning listening experience, with McBride finding fresh nuances in familiar lyrics and working within beautifully crafted new arrangements of cherished melodies. She breathes new life into ballads like “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” and “Do Right Woman” by digging into the deeper meaning of their messages. McBride is equally refreshing on such tempo tunes as “Wild Night” and “Suspicious Minds.” Motown gets some new twists in her versions of “Come See About Me” and “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted.” The 1967 Linda Ronstadt ballad “Little Bit of Rain” becomes a standout moment on McBride’s new record. So is the reworking of the 1966 Etta James/Sugar Pie DeSanto romp “In the Basement,” where McBride is joined by pop star Kelly Clarkson. Soulful Gavin DeGraw is her duet partner on the revival of the 1962 Sam Cooke classic “Bring It on Home to Me.” “I just meant this album to be like a gift,” says Martina McBride. “I wanted to do something different. What I love about this record is that you can just relax with it. I wanted to make an album that you could put on when you’re cooking or when you have friends over. It is like comfort food.” Everlasting is a departure for Martina McBride in several respects. The pop repertoire and her blue-eyed soul musical approach are certainly new for her. This is also the first collection on her own label. And it marks her first album collaboration with superstar producer Don Was, famed for his work with The Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, John Mayer, Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Bette Midler, Carly Simon, The B-52s, Ringo Starr and more. “I had worked with him once before, a long time ago, on a duet with Bob Seger for the Hope Floats movie soundtrack [in 1998],” McBride recalls. “And I have run into him a few times since then. I’ve always wanted to work with him. I just instinctively knew he was the right choice for this record. He loves

havin the band all together recording in one room, so that’s what we did. The musicians were very excited to work with him as well. “Don is very ‘in the moment’ and focused. When you have his attention, you have ALL of his attention. I loved working with him. He’s so laid back, so sweet and so funny. He has this vibe that just puts everybody at ease and his approach is very musical and organic. “I’d taken a lot of time and given a lot of thought about what kind of record I wanted to make and what direction I wanted to go in. Choosing the songs was like going on a big treasure hunt. It really just came down to what I felt most comfortable singing and the songs I was drawn to. “Then I thought, ‘How do I approach this?’ Don said, ‘Your voice is the common thread. You might be singing songs that are different from what you normally do, but people just want to hear you sing.’ Then I relaxed about it and realized, ‘I don’t have to try to be something else. I’m just going to be me.’ If Elton John made a country record, you wouldn’t want him to put on a fake Southern accent. You’d want to hear Elton John.” When Martina McBride made Timeless, her Platinum-selling, 2005 collection of revived country classics, she stuck close to the songs’ original arrangements. For Everlasting, the band instead settled into various blue-eyed soul grooves and provided her with new approaches to the oldies. “On each song, we wanted to pay tribute to the original, but also make it our own. I tried to refocus on the lyrics. I couldn’t find a female version of ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now,’ and all of the male versions were kind of angry and accusing. I realized that the song is actually really sad, so I feel like this version is emotionally different than every other one. “Dan Penn co-wrote ‘Do Right Woman,’ and he was there the day we recorded it. He told me that the actual lyric he wrote was, ‘If you want a do-right, home-days woman, you gotta be a do-right, home-nights man.’ So I sang it that way. I think that’s sweeter. “’What Becomes of the Broken Hearted’ is kind of sad and hopeless for most of the song. But there’s a glimmer of hope at the end, and I wanted to bring that out. I tried to bring some tenderness to it.

“We approached ‘Come See About Me’ a little differently than The Supremes record and gave it a little heavier groove so that it fit the rest of the album. I based my version of ‘Suspicious Minds’ more on the Dee Dee Warwick version of the song, rather than rely too much on Elvis, even though I love the Elvis record of it. It’s the one I grew up with and it was one of the first songs on my list of choices. I chose ‘In the Basement’ for me and Kelly because I think people would have expected some big ballad from us, and I like the fact that it’s just fun and a little unexpected. “I wanted to do a Van Morrison song, and I love ‘Into the Mystic’ and ‘Crazy Love.’ Don said, ‘What about “Wild Night?”’ And that turned out to be so much fun and one of my favorite cuts. It came together very quickly in the studio. “That’s how we worked. A four-piece band, working together and playing off each other. The musicians loved it, and Don loved working with them. We added horns and background vocals later. And that’s really it. It was so easy. “Putting Everlasting out on my own label also felt easy, to be honest. I’ve always had great relationships with the labels I’ve been on so making the change was not about that. It is a lot of responsibilty but exciting at the same time to jus be doing things a bit differently. We put together a great team. She looks at this new chapter in her life as one more adventure. Martina McBride grew up singing country music in rural Kansas, accompanied by her father’s band. She went off to the big city of Wichita, then married John McBride in 1988. The couple moved to Nashville in 1990. He became the city’s most successful and respected recording studio owner. She became a country star. She first made the country charts in 1992. Her hit records since then have included such enduring classics as “Wild Angels,” “Safe in the Arms of Love,”“Wrong Again,”“Blessed,” “My Baby Loves Me,” “Life #9,” “Love’s the Only House,” “Whatever You Say,” “Where Would You Be,” “In My Daughter’s Eyes,” “When God Fearin’ Women Get the Blues” and “A Broken Wing.” She is known for singing lyrics of substance and songs that challenge listeners. Martina has addressed domestic violence in “Independence Day,” female empowerment in “This One’s for the Girls,” child abuse in

“Concrete Angel,” alcoholism in “Cheap Whiskey,” poverty in “God’s Will” and cancer in “I’m Gonna Love You Through It.” To date, she has had 20 top-10 hits and six No. 1 smashes. As a result, Martina McBride is ranked as the most played woman vocalist on country radio between 1999 and 2010, She was honored with induction into the cast of the Grand Ole Opry in 1995. Martina McBride has been awarded 14 Gold Records, nine Platinum honors, three Double Platinum Records and two Triple Platinum awards and been recognized for selling over 18 million units. The Country Music Association has named her its Female Vocalist of the Year four times. The Academy of Country Music has presented her with its Top Female honor three times. The Recording Academy has nominated her for 14 Grammy Awards. The release of Everlasting comes during a time of several other career highlights for her. During the first weeks of 2014, Martina performed at all-star salutes to Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame members Greg Allman and Carole King and was a presenter at the Grammy Awards. She joins Country Music Hall of Fame member George Strait on his farewell tour in the spring. She also has her first book, published by Harper Collins and titled Around The Table, due out this fall. It is a book about entertaining at home complete with recipes, decorating tips, and personal stories, and highlights her passion for food and celebrating life with friends and family.

Jackson Browne Jackson Browne has written and performed some of the most literate and moving songs in popular music and has defined a genre of songwriting charged with honesty, emotion and personal politics. He was honored with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2007. Jackson's career began in the mid-60s in Los Angeles and Orange County folk clubs. Except for a brief period in NYC in the late 1960s, he has always lived in Southern California. His debut album came out on David Geffen's Asylum Records in 1972. Since then, he has released fourteen studio albums and four collections of live performances. His new studio album, Standing In The Breach, is a collection of ten songs, at turns deeply personal and political, exploring love, hope, and defiance in the face of the advancing uncertainties of modern life.

Beyond his music, Browne is known for his advocacy on behalf of the environment, human rights, and arts education. He's a cofounder of the groups Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) and Nukefree.org. In 2002, he was the fourth recipient of the John Steinbeck Award, given to artists whose works exemplify the environmental and social values that were essential to the great California-born author. He has received Duke University’s LEAF award for Lifetime Environmental Achievement in the Fine Arts, and both the Chapin-World Hunger Year and NARM Harry Chapin Humanitarian Awards. In 2004, Jackson was given an honorary Doctorate of Music by Occidental College in Los Angeles, for "a remarkable musical career that has successfully combined an intensely personal artistry with a broader vision of social justice."

Chick Corea and Bela Fleck Chick Corea Chick Corea has attained iconic status in music. The keyboardist, composer and bandleader is a DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, as well as the fourth-most nominated artist in Grammy Awards history with 63 nods – and 22 wins, in addition to a number of Latin Grammys. From straightahead to avant-garde, bebop to jazz-rock fusion, children’s songs to chamber and symphonic works, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his career since playing with the genreshattering bands of Miles Davis in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Yet Chick has never been more productive than in the 21st century, whether playing acoustic piano or electric keyboards, leading multiple bands, performing solo or collaborating with a who’s who of music. Underscoring this, he has been named Artist of the Year twice this decade in the DownBeat Readers Poll. Born in 1941 in Massachusetts, Chick remains a tireless creative spirit, continually reinventing himself through his art. As The New York Times has said, he is “a luminary, ebullient and eternally youthful.” Chick’s classic albums as a leader or co-leader include Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (with Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes; Blue Note, 1968), Paris Concert (with Circle: Anthony Braxton, Dave Holland and Barry Altschul; ECM, 1971) and Return to Forever (with Return to Forever: Joe Farrell, Stanley Clarke, Airto Moreria and Flora Purim; ECM, 1972), as well as Crystal Silence(with Gary Burton; ECM, 1973), My Spanish Heart (Polydor/Verve, 1976), Remembering Bud Powell (Stretch, 1997) and Further Explorations (with Eddie Gomez and Paul Motian; Concord, 2012). A venturesome collaborator, Chick has teamed with artists from jazz legend Lionel Hampton to new-generation pianist Stefano Bollani, from banjoist Béla Fleck to vocal superstar Bobby McFerrin. Chick’s duo partnerships with Gary Burton and Herbie Hancock have endured decades. The latest release from Chick ranks as a new classic in his discography: Trilogy, a live triple-disc set with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade (Concord, 2014). Nominated for two Grammys, the album documents this trio interpreting classic Chick compositions (such as “Spain”), plus

previously unreleased pieces by the pianist (“Piano Sonata: The Moon”), an array of jazz standards and even a Prelude by Alexander Scriabin. Reviewing a stop on one of the trio’s globe-trekking tours, All About Jazz noted: “This one certainly ranks among his most memorable trios… [Corea] has never been more active—and with albums as superb as Trilogy … clearly at the top of his game.” In 2012, Chick’s most recent album with vibraphonist Gary Burton, Hot House (Concord), marked the fifth decade of their duo. It earned the pianist two Grammy Awards: Best Instrumental Composition for “Mozart Goes Dancing” (his work for piano, vibes and string quartet) and Best Improvised Jazz Solo (for “Hot House”). These were his 19th and 20th Grammy wins. Rare for a “jazz musician,” Chick received the Richard J. Bogomolny Award from Chamber Music America in 2010, and he broke new ground as a composer with The Continents: Concerto for Jazz Quintet and Chamber Orchestra, released in 2013 by a storied classical label, Deutsche Grammophon. Chick recorded his first album of solo piano in 1971, and he continued his intimate journey with the instrument on Solo Piano – Portraits (Concord, 2014). For a sold-out international tour and live album in 2008, Chick reconvened his pioneering jazz-rock fusion band Return to Forever, which he founded in 1972. The core of the band – Chick with original member Stanley Clarke and veteran Lenny White – produced a Grammy-winning acoustic album in 2011 with Forever (Concord). Then a new version of Return to Forever – with Clarke, White, Jean-Luc Ponty and Frank Gambale – toured the world to acclaim, yielding the live CD/DVD The Mothership Returns (Eagle Rock, 2011). In another celebration of kindred spirits, Chick co-led the Five Peace Band with guitarist John McLaughlin, a fellow Miles Davis alum. The group won a Grammy for Five Peace Band Live (Concord, 2009), and the New Zealand Herald praised the quintet live as “jazz without compromise, invention without fear.” For 2013 album The Vigil (Concord), Chick put together a new-era electro/acoustic quintet, featuring himself on keyboards and longtime associate Tim Garland on reeds, alongside some hot young players.

A review in The Guardian is indicative of this artist’s questing path, no matter his accomplishments and awards: “Chick Corea sounds on scintillating form… This full-on set is all about celebrating and reinventing, not polishing silverware.” Bela Fleck Just in case you aren't familiar with Béla Fleck, there are some who say he's the premiere banjo player in the world.. Others claim that Béla has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the banjo through a remarkable performing and recording career that has taken him all over the musical map and on a range of solo projects and collaborations. If you are familiar with Béla, you know that he just loves to play the banjo, and put it into unique settings. Born and raised in New York City, Béla began his musical career playing the guitar. In the early 1960's, while watching the Beverly Hillbillies, the bluegrass sounds of Flatt & Scruggs flowed out of the TV set and into his young brain. Earl Scruggs's banjo style hooked Béla's interest immediately. "It was like sparks going off in my head" he later said. It wasn't until his grandfather bought him a banjo in September of '73, that it became his full time passion. That week, Béla entered New York City's, High School of Music and Art. He began studies on the French horn but was soon demoted to the chorus, due his lack of musical aptitude. Since the banjo wasn't an offered elective at Music & Art, Béla sought lessons through outside sources. Erik Darling, Marc Horowitz, and Tony Trischka stepped up and filled the job. Béla joined his first band, "Wicker's Creek" during this period. Living in NYC, Béla was exposed to a wide variety of musical experiences.. One of the most impressive was a concert by "Return to Forever" featuring Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke. This concert encouraged further experimenting with bebop and jazz on the banjo, signs of things to come. Several months after high school, Béla moved to Boston to play with Jack Tottle's Tasty Licks. While in Boston, Béla continued his jazz explorations, made two albums with Tasty Licks, and at 19 years old made his first solo banjo album Crossing the Tracks, on Rounder Records. This is where he first played with future musical partners Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas. After the break up of Tasty Licks, Béla spent a summer on the streets of Boston playing

with bass player, Mark Schatz. Mark and Béla moved to Lexington, KY to form Spectrum, which included Jimmy Gaudreau, Glen Lawson, and Jimmy Mattingly. Spectrum toured until 1981. While in Spectrum, he and Mark traveled to California and Nashville to record his second album Natural Bridge with David Grisman, Mark O'Connor, Ricky Skaggs, Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, and other great players. In 1981, Béla was invited to join the progressive bluegrass band New Grass Revival, lead by Sam Bush on mandolin, fiddle and vocals. With the addition of Pat Flynn on guitar and NGR veteran John Cowan on bass and vocals, New Grass Revival took bluegrass music to new limits, exciting audiences and critics alike. Through the course of five albums, they charted new territory with their blend of bluegrass, rock and country music. The relentless national and international touring by NGR exposed Béla's banjo playing to the bluegrass/acoustic music world. (During the 9 years Béla spent with NGR he continued to record a series of solo albums for Rounder, including the ground breaking 1988 album "Drive". He also collaborated with Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor in an acoustic super group called Strength in Numbers. The MCA release, "The Telluride Sessions", is also considered an evolutionary statement by the acoustic music community. Towards the end of the New Grass years, Béla and Howard Levy crossed paths at the Winipeg Folk Festival. Next came a phone call from a friend who wanted to introduce him to an amazing bass player. Victor Lemonte Wooten played some licks on the phone for Béla and the second connection was made. In 1988 Dick Van Kleek, Artistic Director for the PBS Lonesome Pine Series based in Louisville, Kentucky, offered Béla a solo show. Béla put several musical sounds together with his banjo, a string quartet, his Macintosh computer and also the more jazz based combo. Howard and Victor signed on for the concert, but the group still lacked a drummer. The search was on for an unusual drummer/percussionist. Victor offered up his brother Roy Wooten, later to become known as FutureMan. Roy was developing the Drumitar (Drum - Guitar), it was then in its' infancy. A midi trigger device, the drumitar allowed FutureMan to play the drums

with his fingers triggering various sampled sounds. The first rehearsal held at Béla's Nashville home was hampered by a strong thunderstorm that knocked the electricity out for hours. The four continued on with an acoustic rehearsal and the last slot on the TV show became the first performance of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. Next came the self-titled CD, which Béla financed himself. The recording attracted the attention of the folks at Warner Brothers Records. It was released in 1990, dubbed a"blubop" mix of jazz and bluegrass, and soon became a commercially successful disc. The album was Grammy nominated, and their second recording "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo" followed suit. Howard Levy toured and recorded with the Flecktones till the end of 1992. After several years as a trio and touring with special guests, saxophonist Jeff Coffin joined the Tones. Famed for a non-stop touring schedule, the Flecktones have reached more than 500,000 audience members yearly from 2001 on. Still releasing albums and touring, the Tones have garnered a strong and faithful following among jazz and new acoustic fans. They have shared the stage with Dave Mathews Band, Sting, Bonnie Raitt and the Grateful Dead, among many others, made several appearances on The Tonight Show in the Johnny Carson days and the Jay Leno days, as well as Arsenio Hall, and Conan O'Brian. Béla also appeared on Saturday Night Live and David Letterman's show as well. Although the first Flecktones albums were created live-in-the-studio, the group went on to experiment with overdubs and guest artists on later albums, with contributions from artists as diverse as Chick Corea, Bruce Hornsby, Branford Marsalis, John Medeski, Andy Statman, the Alash Group and Dave Matthews. The Flecktones went on tour with Dave Matthews Band in 1996 and 1997, and Fleck is featured on several tracks on DMB's 1998 album "Before these Crowded Streets." In 2003, Béla Fleck & the Flecktones released the landmark three-disc set "Little Worlds" simultaneously with a highlights disc entitled Ten From Little Worlds. In 2006 the band released The Hidden Land, which won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album in 2007. In 2008, Jingle All The Way, the band's holiday album was released, and in 2009 it was voted best Pop Instrumental Album at the Grammies.

Any world-class musician born with the names Béla (for Bartok), Anton (for Dvorak) and LÈos (for Janacek) would seem destined to play classical music. Already a powerfully creative force in bluegrass, jazz, pop, rock and world beat, Béla at last made the classical connection with "Perpetual Motion", his critically acclaimed 2001 Sony Classical recording that went on to win a pair of Grammys, including Best Classical Crossover Album, in the 44th annual Grammy Awards. (Collaborating with Fleck on "Perpetual Motion" was his long time friend and colleague Edgar Meyer, a bassist whose virtuosity defies labels and also an acclaimed composer. In the wake of that album's release, Fleck & Meyer came up with the idea of a banjo/bass duo, which they developed and refined during a concert tour of the US. Live recordings from that tour are the basis for their latest Sony Classical recording "Music For Two" which also includes a bonus DVD featuring a documentary film by Sascha Paladino (Fleck's brother) that captures the duo's collaboration and crafting of repertoire while on tour. Béla and Edgar also co-wrote and performed a double concerto for banjo, bass and the Nashville Symphony, which debuted in November 2003. The recipient of Multiple Grammy Awards going back to 1998, Béla Flecks' total Grammy count is 14 Grammys won, and 30 nominations. He has been nominated in more different categories than anyone in Grammy history.

Tears for Fears Chart toppers Tears for Fears’ 2004’s critically acclaimed Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, signaled a welcome return for one of the biggest and best-loved bands of the postMTV age, as well as one of the most eagerly anticipated reunions in pop music history. “This is the album that should have followed Seeds Of Love in many ways,” said singersongwriter Roland Orzabal, who for the first time since the album’s 1989 release was rejoined by TFF cofounder Curt Smith. The results were standout tracks like “Closest Thing To Heaven,”“Call Me Mellow” and “Who Killed Tangerine.” They spent the next year and half on a world wide tour supporting the album playing to sold out crowds and enthusiastic fans. In addition to successful U.S. tours in 2007 and 2009, Tears For Fears have toured Europe, performing in the renowned concert series Night Of The Proms with a seventy-five-piece orchestra and full choir. The shows, a combination of pop music and popular classical music, are the biggest annually organized indoor event in Europe. Over the last three years TFF played the series in Holland, Belgium, France, Spain and Germany. Following his 2008 sophomore solo album Halfway, pleased, Smith released his latest single “All Is Love (Featuring Zoë Keating)” in January 2009, via his own KOOK Media imprint. Orzabal has been keeping busy working on his first fictional novel. An omnipresent fixture in the early days of music video, Tears For Fears brought Orzabal and Smith into the pop music spotlight via their 1983 debut album The Hurting, a sophisticated collection of inward-looking, electro-tinged pop songs including “Mad World” (recently covered to enormous international success by Gary Jules on the “Donnie Darko” soundtrack), “Pale Shelter” and “Change,” all Top 10 hits in the band’s British homeland. The Bath-based duo, longtime friends and prior members of youthful band Graduate, never anticipated the even greater success that would greet them next, however. 1985’s Songs From The Big Chair was an international sensation, boasting three Top 5 singles in the U.S. alone (dual No.

1’s “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and “Shout,” and “Head Over Heels”) and catapulting the pair to superstardom. In an attempt to satisfy the international demand for the band, the group then spent an extended period touring and promoting the new album around the world—a time that, as we would later see, would take its toll on the band in the days to come. Tears For Fears continued, and indeed when Big Chair’s follow-up Sowing The Seeds Of Love emerged four years later, it soared into the Top 10 and offered the No. 2 smash “The Seeds Of Love.” A joyous, profoundly Beatle-esque burst of rich melodic pop accompanied by an equally memorable video, it proved well worth the wait to those fans who’d been clamoring from more from Roland and Curt. But the wait would be very long indeed. Following a charity performance at Knebworth in June 1990, Smith packed up and left Tears For Fears, moving to New York and eventually pursuing a solo career. “The thing is, we had become hugely successful,” he says. “And I think with that comes a certain amount of pressure. And I’m talking personally here, but under pressure, I’m not very happy. I’m really not. And leaving was driven by pure unhappiness. I wasn’t enjoying it, it wasn’t doing anything for me anymore. I went through a marriage split-up at that point in time—I’d met somebody in America, my now wife, and we’d fallen in love and I wanted to move to America. I wanted to move to New York, I wanted to get away from England. Basically, personally, I wanted to start a new life, is what I wanted. And to do that, Tears For Fears at that point couldn’t be part of that equation.” With Orzabal solely at the helm, TFF continued, releasing three additional albums—Elemental (1993), Raoul And The Kings Of Spain (1995), and Saturnine, Martial and Lunatic (1996)—and touring internationally to promote them. By 1996, things came to a head, he recalls. “It was South America, and we were playing Colombia, and it was a tough trip,” he says. “Because Tears For Fears had had no success in Colombia since 1983, so they were promoting the show with hits from the very first album. It was depressing. And so going onstage I knew what my job was—just to

make everyone go crazy. And after an hourand-a-half they were going crazy, and I was singing “Shout” as an encore--and I thought, “I’ve had enough of this.” Orzabal, who had two young sons at home in Bath, then did “the semi-retirement thing,” working at home on technologybased music and in 1999 co-producing a solo album by Icelandic singer Emiliana Torrini. Finally deciding to release the music he’d been working on, his first solo album Tomcats Screaming Outside hit American streets—as extremely bad luck would have it---on September 11, 2001. “Fortunate timing,” he now notes with irony. Meanwhile, Curt Smith was getting on with his new life stateside. He made a solo album (“which I hated,” says he) for Polygram, hosted shows for MTV, started a syndicated college radio show, and, significantly, found an able music partner in guitarist/songwriter Charlton Pettus, with whom he formed the group Mayfield. “I guess I got the bug again,” he says. “We started writing songs and then he persuaded me to start playing. So I just started playing clubs in New York and I had the best time ever. Because I would leave my apartment, walk to the club, play, and then walk home. It was basically rekindling my love of music, which was kind of for the right reasons—you do it because you actually want to do it, as opposed it just being a business, which is the side I didn’t really like.” Still out on his own in the U.K., Roland notes, “every time I walked into a record company with any music, they were going, `Oh, this is great! Can you get back together with Curt?’ It was just on and on and on--market forces,

and that kind of thing.” Finally, the inevitable occurred—Curt and Roland again met, and the meeting was good. “We’ve always had business interests which have carried on after we split in’90,” says Roland. “So we’re always signing off on things together anyway. We have mutual friends, and it was just a matter of time, really, before so much water passed under the bridge. And it was like--well, what are we worried about? Let’s start chatting and see where it goes.” Where it went is into the heart of Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, a title the pair couldn’t help but hang on their new album, and an inescapable truism their reunion solidly reinforces. The point was driven home, the pair recalls, by the ease with which they completed “Closest Thing To Heaven,” their first songwriting collaboration in years. “That’s one of those songs that came in a day,” says Curt, “from the start of playing it to virtually finishing it, bar all the lyrics, it was done.” Memorable melodies filled the songs of Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, and those who heard the Beatles in Roland and Curt’s previous work together heard it again... It’s inescapable. `When we did `Sowing The Seeds Of Love’ we were doing Lennon,” says Roland. “And I would say the main influence for this album was McCartney. Because,” he grins, “I think McCartney is the new Lennon.” Tears For Fears continues to sell out shows throughout the world, and Orzabal and Smith maintain their status as one of pop music’s more productive musical collaborations.

Melissa Etheridge: This is M.E. Solo A billion stars out in an endless sky, and I won’t be alone, won’t be alone, won’t be alone tonight…. powering Melissa Etheridge’s cherished songs throughout her singular career. But as the rousing chorus of “I Won’t Be Alone Tonight,” the opening song of her album This is ME, it holds some new meaning, new context. With this album, her 12th collection of new material, she is not alone as a songwriter. For the vibrant collection she teamed with some of the most creative, inventive figures on the music scene: Jerrod Bettis (Adele, One Republic, Eric Hutchinson, Gavin DeGraw), Jon Levine (Nelly Furtado, K’Naan, Selena Gomez), JerryWonda (Grammy Awardwinning producer of the Fugees, Mary J. Blige, Akon) and Roccstar (Usher, Chris Brown) at the forefront. It was a very new way of doing things for the artist, who counts two Grammy Awards and 17 nominations, an Academy Award (for “I Need to Wake Up” from the Al Gore documentary An Inconvenient Truth) and a star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame among her many accolades. Recording the new album proved an inspiring, electrifying experience for her, the best kind of challenge. And the resultant energy is clear in the songs. “I haven’t been this excited about making music and creating in ages,” Etheridge says. “Song after song was a great experience.” Make no mistake, the album’s declarative title is fully fitting— not despite the collaborations, but because of them. The powerful lyrics and incomparable voice, the indelible melodies, the blazing guitars could be from no one else. And same for the soulful joy and unbridled passion powering every note, from the big sing-along pop hooks of “A Little Hard Hearted” and “Do It Again” to the greasy, swampy sounds of “Ain’t That Bad” and “Stranger Road.” These are songs right from her heart, the frisky flirtation of “Take My Number” and mystery-trip “Stranger Road” among those drawing on scenes and settings of her Kansas upbringing. And “Who Are You Waiting For” closes the album on the most intimate, emotional, personal, lump-in-thethroat note of her entire career. It’s the song she wrote for and debuted at her wedding

earlier this year to Linda Wallem. “I opened a door to my inner little heart and wrote a song,” she says. “I sat down at the piano, started writing and the chorus came out, about how we were friends for years and years, and as we got closer it was ‘Who are you waiting for? I’m right here!’” She made a voice memo of what she’d written and sent it to Levine. “He went crazy over it, said, ‘You gotta warn me before playing something like that!’” Levine put together the arrangement, including the organ that comes in toward the end. “That gets you,” she says. “The first time I heard that I burst into tears. I wasn’t there when he did it. It floored me.” And that was only the preview of the song’s profound debut. “I sang it at the wedding,” Etheridge says. “I was able to keep her from hearing it before. It was my vows.” As the album title says, this is all Melissa Etheridge— ME. “It’s still me— I’m just riding around in different cars,” she says. “Music is a collaborative art anyway. I gave it everything I could and pushed my creativity more than I ever have, by collaboration. Collaboration is not compromise. It’s a plus, bringing in people who make what I do better.” Ideas flowed freely and quickly. “A Little Bit of Me” was written in the course of a plane ride to New York, Etheridge working from a beat and a melody Bettis had come up with. Similarly, the words for the swampy “Monster,” with its slinky slide guitar, came as she was on her way to the United Nations to speak as the global body was declaring LGBT rights as human rights, the song’s theme of being the “other,” the feared outsider, coming directly from her personal experience growing up gay. This is ME also marks the debut of her independent label, ME Records. Distributed by Caroline Records and overseen in coordination with PrimaryWave, a fullservice music management and marketing strategy firm, the venture gives Etheridge new freedoms to explore creative avenues. The whole process, she says, has been invigorating. “It’s a liberating responsibility,” she says,

noting that it’s not a contradiction in terms. “I was liberated to make my own choices, to be in charge of where every dime went, who exactly I wanted to record with. And it was a responsibility to say, ‘How can I get the best out of me and get the end result I’m looking for.’” It was PrimaryWave that first suggested she work with Jerrod Bettis and Jon Levine. Bettis tapped his origins as a drummer to create rhythm tracks as foundations on which Etheridge could build. “I would take them and go home and write,” Etheridge says. “‘Take My Number’ — there it is!” Levine, an accomplished keyboard player as well as producer, bonded quickly with Etheridge over their mutual love for Bruce Springsteen. “We said, ‘Let’s make the songs we would want to hear,’” she says. “‘Won’t Be Alone’ was one of those. And ‘Stranger Road’ is a perfect example. We created musical beds together and then I wrote the lyrics and melodies.” JerryWonda, the Grammy Award-winning producer of the Fugees, Mary J. Blige and many others, came on board as Etheridge explored her lifelong love for soul and urban music— “this side of me I’d never let out.” She went to his studio in Manhattan and found another new approach. “With Jon Levine IT was his him and me and a few machines and then I’d go away and write,” she says. “With Jerry it was him and me, a drummer and two keyboard players all in the studio control room, and other people rounding it out. I’d say, ‘Play me something.’ And we’d start creating and right away he’d bring in other musicians and we would create the track. It was amazing!”

Young hip-hop rising force Roccstar brought in other elements, and Etheridge returned the favor for him. “He had this march beat — boom-boomBOOM. But he’d never worked with live guitars, so I put on my Les Paul and started playing and he’s screaming and we’re having so much fun, and we created ‘Ain’t That Bad’ right there.” The chance to experiment led to some unexpected touches, such as bringing in cellist Neyla Pakarek from the folkie band the Lumineers to contribute to a couple of songs. Etheridge had been turned onto the band by her daughter and became a fan. When Levine suggested bringing in a string player, Etheridge suggested Pakarek, who not only added cello to “Stranger Road” and an entire string section, playing all the parts, on “Who Are You Waiting For,” but showcased her singing on “A Little Hard Hearted.” This is ME comes in a very active stretch for Etheridge, even by her seemingly tireless standards. In addition to her steady touring, both with her band and as a solo act, she did a week stint in the role of St. Jimmy in American Idiot on Broadway in 2011, continued her noted activism speaking to the United Nations on LGBT rights as human rights, sang her own “Uprising of Love” and John Lennon’s “Imagine” as part of this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square and performed at the opening ceremonies of the WorldPride week in Toronto. But the making of the album was inspired and inspiring, energized and energizing. It’s there in every note. The bottom line, she says, simply: “I’ve made an album I love.”

Engelbert Humperdinck: Engelbert Calling Tour His name comes from the 1911, century Austrian composer who wrote "Hansel & Gretel." His voice comes from heaven, and he has been a legend in the international music industry for the last forty plus years, with over 150 million records sold. Some of the evergreen hits that belong to Engelbert include: "(Please) Release Me," "After The Lovin," "Spanish Eyes," "The Last Waltz," and "Quando, Quando, Quando." He has recorded everything from the most romantic ballads to the platinum-selling theme song for a Beavis and Butthead movie. His remarkable voice and extraordinary talent has endeared him to millions of fans. Few people realize that several of the major forces in the world of rock n' roll, including Jimi Hendrix and The Carpenters, started out as opening acts for Humperdinck. In 1999 “Humper” recorded The Dance Album as his first album in the dance genre. The album featured newly recorded dance versions of six of Engelbert's greatest hits, along with five original songs. ays Billboard magazine of The Dance Album: "...brilliantly cool...one of the most fun pop/dance albums of the decade." With four Grammy nods, a Golden Globe for "Entertainer of the Year" (1988), 63 gold and 24 platinum records and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Humperdinck might rest easy on his laurels. Recently, he has joined in elite group of musical artists, such as Tony Bennett, who have crossed over successfully to strike a chord with a younger generation. The Humper has appeared on several MTV programs, including two appearances on "MTV Beach House", "Chilling with the Weaze" and "Oddville." Engelbert Humperdinck came into this world as Arnold George Dorsey, one of ten siblings. His father served in the British military, and his mother taught violin and had an operatic voice. They all lived in Leicester, England. At the age of eleven, Arnold George Dorsey began to study saxophone. When he was seventeen, Engelbert found himself playing at a pub that sponsored a singing contest. Goaded by his friends to enter, he put down his sax and for the first time revealed another vocal talent: impersonations. Arnold George Dorsey gave the world’s finest impersonation of Jerry

Lewis- Jerry Lewis still thinks so-and was quickly dubbed Gerry Dorsey by his fans. It became his professional stage name. He never picked up the sax again. Gerry Dorsey was popular on the UK music circuit until he contracted tuberculosis. Upon regaining his health, Gerry Dorsey knew he had to bury his old image to make a comeback as a dynamic performer, still tall, dark handsome and somewhat mysterious. His manager suggested the name Engelbert Humperdinck. It was just outrageous enough to be memorable. It would take a man with a secure self-image and sense of humor to pull it off. And thus was born the soon-to-be legend, Engelbert Humperdinck. Few people realize that it was Humperdinck, not Elvis, who made famous the sideburns and flamboyant leather jumpsuits. Engelbert often jokingly asserts that Elvis "stole" the image from him. Nevertheless, the two legends enjoyed a lasting friendship. Romance serves as the core of Engelbert Humperdinck's music and lasting success. He knows how to pick songs with eternal themes of love and longing, and lovers always want to hear them sung. Engelbert recently completed recording his first duets CD “Engelbert Calling.” He has recently completed tracks with a who’s who of the music world, including Sir Elton John, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Shelby Lynne, Charles Aznavour, Johnny Mathis, Cliff Richard, Neil Sedaka, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Rogers, Lulu and Gene Simmons. Sir Elton said his new recording pal was “one of the sweetest and nicest people I have ever worked with.” He went on, “We had a great time singing together. He is 76 years old and still sounding as good as ever.” “I am truly thrilled to be working with some of the greats of show business on this new CD,” Engelbert recently said. The CD was released in 2014. For Everything Engelbert please check out our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ OfficialEngelbertHumperdinck Engelbert is happily married to his wife of almost 50 years Patricia. They have 4 children and 9 grandchildren. Engelbert is managed by his son Scott Dorsey/Dorsey Productions.

Art Garfunkel Although it has been over 40 years since Bridge Over Troubled Water,Art Garfunkel's image and signature vocal remain among the most recognizable in music. His "beautiful countertenor," as Neil Strauss described Art's voice in The New York Times, is clear and resonant, surely one of the finest instruments in all of popular music, and a time-honored friend to a world of listeners. The dialogue began for Art at age four, when his father brought home one of the first wire recorders. "That got me into music more than anything else," he recalls, "singing and being able to record it." Seven years later he was singing Everly Brothers songs at school talent shows with a partner, Paul Simon, from his Forest Hills neighborhood in Queens, New York. "Then rhythm 'n blues, rock 'n roll came along." He and Paul set their sights on the Brill Building. "We practiced in the basement so much that we got professional sounding. We made demos in Manhattan and knocked on all the doors of the record companies with our hearts in our throats." In 1957, 'Tom and Jerry' (as they were called then) landed a recording contract. Their first 45, "Hey, Schoolgirl" (which they wrote together) scored a moderate hit and they appeared on "American Bandstand" as high school seniors. "We got a quick education in the record business," Art recounts. "But I left and went to college. I was the kid who was going to find some way to make a 'decent' living." He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Columbia College, majoring in Art History; later he earned his Masters degree in Mathematics at Columbia University. But he never stopped singing, and even recorded several solo singles (as 'Artie Garr') while in school. When he met up again with Simon in 1962 and they began to rehearse, the decision was clear to get back together as a duo. They started performing as Simon & Garfunkel at the height of the folk music boom in late-1963, and within a year were signed to Columbia Records, who paired them with producer/engineer Roy Halee. Simon & Garfunkel maintained a tireless pace in the recording studio and on the road, reaching a wide and loyal international audience. From 1964 to 1970 they recorded a groundbreaking string of classic albums (Wednesday Morning 3 A.M., Sounds Of

Silence, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, The Graduate, Bookends, and Bridge Over Troubled Water) and an equally impressive body of songs, many of which became pop standards, among them; "The Sound Of Silence," "Homeward Bound," "I Am a Rock," "Kathy's Song," "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her," "At the Zoo," "A Hazy Shade of Winter," "America," "Scarborough Fair/ Canticle," "Mrs. Robinson," "The Boxer," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Cecilia," "El Condor Pasa," and "My Little Town." Simon & Garfunkel won five Grammy awards together, two in 1968 (Record of the Year and Best Contemporary Pop Performance/ Duo or Group for "Mrs. Robinson"); and three in 1970 (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists for "Bridge Over Troubled Water," which also won Song of the Year and Best Engineered Recording). In 1977, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" received the prestigious Britannia Award for "Best International Pop LP and Single, 1952-77," as voted by the music industry of Great Britain. In 1972, Simon & Garfunkel Greatest Hits was released, remaining on the charts for 131 weeks in the U.S. and a staggering 179 weeks in the UK. The album has since sold 14 million units the largest selling album of all time for a duo. In 1990, Paul and Art were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "They were fabulous years," Art remembers warmly. "I'll always be happy to say a little on behalf of the duo. I'm proud of singing those great songs. Now they teach Paul Simon songs in churches and schools as part of the curricula... it seems that part of good citizenship is the knowledge of the songs we did. How can I grasp that?" Having already worked with director Mike Nichols on The Graduate soundtrack, Art went on to feature acting roles in Nichols' movies Catch-22 (1969) and Carnal Knowledge ('71), opposite Ann-Margret, Candice Bergen and Jack Nicholson. Art also garnered acclaim for his roles in films such as Nicholas Roeg's Bad Timing: A Sensual Obsession ('80) with Theresa Russell and Harvey Keitel, Good to Go ('86) and Jennifer Lynch's controversial film, Boxing Helena ('93). Art Garfunkel's first solo album, Angel Clare, was released in 1973 to critical and commercial acclaim. The album contained

the Jimmy Webb penned tune "All I Know" and was produced by long time Simon & Garfunkel engineer and co-producer, Roy Halee. Halee also produced "Second Avenue," which became a hit in 1974. Breakaway, co-produced with Richard Perry was released in 1975 and contained the mega-hit "I Only Have Eyes For You." In addition to the title song, the album contained a treasure trove of hits including, "Looking For The Right One" (background vocals by David Crosby, Graham Nash and Steven Bishop), "Rag Doll," 99 Miles From LA," the ex-Beach Boy Bruce Johnston's "Disney Girls," as well as a reunion with Paul Simon on "My Little Town." In 1976, Garfunkel recalls, "I went to Muscle Shoals, Alabama for my third album, Watermark (1977), an entire album of Jimmy Webb songs with the exception of Sam Cooke's timeless "What a Wonderful World," produced by Phil Ramone, with vocals by Art, Paul Simon and James Taylor. "Bright Eyes," written and produced by Mike Batt and heavily featured in the animated film version of Watership Down, topped the UK charts in spring 1979. The single sold over a million copies. Fate for Breakfast was released in 1979 and included the hit single "Since I Don't Have You" featuring the brilliant Michael Brecker on tenor saxophone. The album reached #2 on the UK charts. Named one of the best albums of 1981 by Rolling Stone Magazine, Scissors Cut included the Gallagher & Lyle hit, "A Heart In New York." Stephen Holden in Rolling Stone wrote, this is "Art Garfunkel's finest album, easily justifies his unfashionable formal approach to pop music by its sheer aural beauty." Shortly after the release of Scissor Cut, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel reunited for a concert in New York's Central Park before a crowd of 500,000. Following up on the success of the concert, HBO special and live album (Platinum), the duo undertook a worldwide tour in 1982-83. The Animals' Christmas, recorded with Amy Grant and the London Symphony Orchestra, was released in 1986. Written by Jimmy Webb and engineered and co-produced by Jeff Emerick (former engineer for The Beatles). Art said at the time, "It's a gothic cathedral of an album, very ambitious. It was the type of project that would have been done by papal commission long ago." Emerick continued to work with Art on his sixth solo album,

Lefty, released in 1988. It includes a startling remake of Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" and a duet with Kenny Rankin on "I Wonder Why." In the mid-1980's, Art's obsession with longdistance walking began to come into focus, starting with a three-week hike across the rice paddies and back roads of Japan in 1982. By 1984, his walk across America was a major part of his annual schedule. Concurrently, "I became a writer for the first time in my life," he says, "not a songwriter, but a literary guy." A collection of his prose poetry, Still Water, was published in 1989. In the spring of 1990, at the request of the US State Department, Art performed before 1.4 million people at an outdoor rally to support and promote democracy in Sofia, Bulgaria. Enjoying the experience of live performances, Art began touring Europe, Asia and the United States in the early Nineties. "I had horrible stage fright, but just going out there and doing it night after night has brought my adrenaline down to a manageable place. Now I feel I'm just coming into my prime as a stage performer." Art's eighth solo album, up 'til now, offered up a compilation of old Simon & Garfunkel rarities, live Garfunkel recordings, and new studio ballads including Art's beautiful duet with James Taylor on "Crying In The Rain," and both the theme for the television series, "Brooklyn Bridge" as well as "Two Sleepy People" from the film A League of Their Own. The album's release coincided with a series of 21 sold-out reunion shows with Paul Simon at New York's Paramount Theater. Having completed his walk across the United States in 1996, Disney released a documentary-style video that chronicles Art's 12-year walk as well as a celebratory concert at the Registry Hall on Ellis Island, where Art's ancestors had first stepped onto American soil. Across America, a live CD of the concert was released later that year. "My goal," says Art, "was to feel my connection with America, one step at a time." On the heels of Across America, Art recorded Songs From a Parent to a Child, which was nominated for Best Musical Album for Children (1997). The album, inspired by his son James, features renditions of songs by Cat Stevens, Marvin Gaye, Lovin' Spoonful, James Taylor and Lennon/McCartney. Everything Waits To Be Noticed marked Art's debut as a songwriter, as he collaborated

with Buddy Mondlock and Maia Sharp on songs inspired by Still Water. Reviewing the album, Jan Wenner wrote, "I hear elements of everything from the surging folk pop of Buckingham/Nicks-era Fleetwood Mack to the crisp folk-rock sorcery of the Mamas and the Papa to the deft vocal-jazz diction of the Manhattan Transfer. But, above all, I discern a startlingly original chemistry." In 2003, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel accepted the Grammy's Lifetime Achievement Award and performed "Sound of Silence" to open the live broadcast. Paul and Art decided the time was right for a reunion and announced a worldwide tour that would continue into 2004. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel performed together at Madison Square Garden on September 20, 2005 in "From The Big Apple to The Big Easy," a concert for long term relief and rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The duo sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water," Homeward Bound" and "Mrs. Robinson." The concert raised $9 million for long-term relief from the hurricane. Art Garfunkel released his 12th solo album, Some Enchanted Evening in January 2007. The CD is a musical celebration of material from the 20th century’s greatest songwriters. “I’ve been loving this stuff all my life,” Art says. The album is the organic next chapter in Art’s life,

as he reflects on fatherhood and the chaotic world we live in: “In this nervous world I want to soothe. It’s a great time for moderation, for thoughtfulness, for dialogue, for the great Exhale, for humor. A great time for a sweet sound, a visceral, charming, prayerful sound.” In teaming with his friend and producer, Richard Perry, Art found a forum for his revered vocal style, recapturing the spirit of their Breakaway sessions, which produced the hit “I Only Have Eyes For You.” “In a sense, Richard and I picked up where we left off. This album is Richard’s elegant production, it fits me good, and I am especially proud of it” says Art. “Some of the songs I brought in like ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ and Harold Arlen’s ‘Let’s Fall In Love.’ I had my favorites and he had his, like ‘Life Is But A Dream’ and ‘Quiet Nights.’ We both love Johnny Mathis and Chet Baker.” "I feel somewhat different from many people in the extraordinary amount of good fortune that fell into my lap and made up my life," Art muses. "I rehearsed a lot in my teenage years and really sought after what this country holds, good fortune for those who go after it with hard work. But I do feel as I pass through the country, it's a charmed life. I grew up with a lot of love in my family, so I have the five senses with which to glean the richness of this land as I pass through it."

Chubby Checker and The Spinners Chubby Checker In 2 minutes & 42 Seconds, Chubby Checker revolutionized popular culture and changed the music business forever. When he appeared on American Bandstand in 1960 and performed “The Twist,” it was the dawn of a new era in rock and roll. Dancing apart to the beat was born and teenagers found a new way to express themselves. Chubby’s Dance Style has extended from Woodstock, thru Disco to the present day. He stands alone as a one of a kind rock icon, who has had 36 hit records, is the only artist to have a single go to # 1 twice, and according to Billboard, has the # 1 Single for the 1960s. Chubby was awarded the first Platinum Single, the first Rock Grammy and has sold an astounding 250,000,000 records over the years. That’s why Dick Clark has said: “The three most important things that ever happened in the Music Industry are Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Chubby Checker.” In the 21st Century, Chubby Checker's string of hit singles and influence on a whole new generation continues. In 2004, his Radio Disney Hit, “Limbo Remix” was a fixture on the Billboard Dance Chart and remained in the Top 5 for over a year. “Knock Down The Walls,” made it’s way to the # 1 Spot on Billboard’s Dance Chart and extended his National Chart Life to 45 plus years – 2nd only to Elvis Presley. A Pop mix of the song found its way into the Top 30 at Adult Contemporary Radio and sparked more renewed interest in his music. Chubby Checker is the son of a tobacco farmer from Spring Gulley, SC. His mother moved the family to Philadelphia when he was a young boy. It was here on South Street, in Tony Anastazi’s Produce Store, that he became a local celebrity by doing impressions of Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis. His first manager, Henry Colt brought him to the attention of Kal Mann, who signed him to Cameo-Parkway Records. It was Dick Clark's wife, Bobbie, who came up with the name Checker to go with his childhood nick name Chubby – a reference to the similarity between him and Fats Domino. Chubby's first single, "The Class" was a vehicle for his musical impressions and was included in Dick Clark's '58 Christmas card. That record was his first hit and reached #38 in Billboard.

Soon after, Dick Clark was looking for someone to record "The Twist," a song originally written and performed by Hank Ballard. He needed a more commercial version for the kids on Bandstand. After Danny & The Juniors turned down the request, Chubby recorded his version in 35 minutes one evening in July of '59. The new track shared the same arrangement except for a straighter drum feel and smoother vocal delivery. Chubby Checker's cover and his accompanying dance routine gave the song new life. It took over a year but "The Twist" went to # 1 in the fall of '60. He was dubbed "The King of the Twist." This initial success was followed by a string of hit singles in the early 60's - some of which are: The Hucklebuck (#9), Pony Time (#1), The Mess Around (#24), The Fly (#7), Slow Twistn' (#3), Limbo Rock (#2), Jingle Bell Rock (#21), Popeye (#10), Dancin' Party (#12), as well as the first Certified Platinum single ever, "Lets Twist Again." Chubby had 10 double sided hits and according to Billboard was one of the top charting Artists in 59,60,61,62, & 63 rated at #3 in '61 & '62. When Chubby married Catherina Lodder, who was Miss World '62, he dedicated the single "Loddy Lo" to her; which became a double sided hit along with "Hooka Tooka." In 1988 he sang lead on the Fat Boys' cover, "Yo Twist," which made it to # 16. In 2002, Chubby's country single, "Honky Tonk Girls" reached 37 on the New Music Weekly's American Country Chart. Chubby Checker has been on a never ending tour since 1959. Chubby’s loyal fans from the 60’s are now joined by the new audience he’s been attracting over the last several years. There are only a handful of true rock pioneers still performing at the peak of there ability. Chubby Checker is that rare breed. Every time Chubby steps onto a stage, he demonstrates charisma and a unique quality that can never be equaled. Chubby Checker remains one of the most exciting performers out there and he only gets better and better with time. The Spinners Most often thought of as a Motown recording act, The Spinners have never lost its universal appeal. Throughout the years they have sold millions of records and topped both the Pop and R&B charts with smash hits like “I’ll

Be Around” and “Then Came You.” Today, original member Henry Fambrough is joined onstage by lead singer Charlton Washington, high tenor Marvin Taylor, tenor Ronnie Moss, and bass singer Jessie Peck; a soul-infused 5-piece band, led by Keith Ferguson, backs them up. After a brief time at Motown, The Spinners signed to Atlantic Records in 1972. There, under the helm of producer and songwriter Thom Bell, The Spinners charted five top 100 singles (and two top tens) from their first post-Motown album, Spinners (1972), and went on to become one of the biggest soul groups of the 1970s. A partial list of their hit singles on Atlantic include “Mighty Love,” “Then Came You,” “I’ll Be Around,” “One Of A Kind (Love Affair),” “Games People Play,” and “Could It Be.” In 1979, The Spinners completed their first collaboration with producer Michael Zager, and by early 1980, the single, “Working My Way Back to You,” was topping Pop and R&B charts giving the group its 12th gold record. The Love Trippin’ album’s release included “The Cupid Medley,” one of the fastest selling records in The Spinners’ career. The follow-up album, Labor of Love, featured such stand-out tunes as “Yesterday Once More,” and “Long Live

Soul Music.” With the release of “Can’t Shake This Feeling,” their fourth LP in just over two years, the quintet joined the award winning producing/writing/ playing team of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas. The Spinners have six Grammy nominations and have performed twice during the awards ceremony. Charles Esten and Clare Bowen Charles Esten Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Charles “Chip” Esten was raised in Alexandria, VA and attended T.C. Williams High School (made famous in the film Remember the Titans.) He then attended The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, where he graduated with a degree in economics and met his eventual wife, Patty. While in Williamsburg, he was lead singer/songwriter in a popular local band. Esten made his theatrical debut in London when he portrayed Buddy Holly, singing, acting and playing guitar in the hit West End musical “Buddy.” In that role he was honored to perform for H.R.M Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, and eventually President and Mrs. George H.W. Bush at The White House. He was also very honored to perform with Jerry Allison and Joe B. Mauldin, Buddy’s original hitmaking bandmates, the Crickets. It was during his run as Buddy that Esten first appeared on the original British version of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?,” with Ryan Stiles and Greg Proops. When “Whose Line” came to ABC, he became a recurring cast member and frequent song improvisor. Since then he has appeared on Drew Carey’s Improvaganza and toured frequently, performing live improv shows with Stiles, Proops and Jeff B. Davis. Esten’s many additional television credits include recurring roles on “Big Love,” “Enlightened,” “The Office” and “ER.” Besides being the father on Disney Channel’s “Jessie,” he has been a Klingon on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” a secretary on “Murphy Brown” and Kelly Bundy’s fiance on the series finale of “Married with Children.” His film credits include “Swing Vote,” “Thirteen Days,” “61*” and “The Postman.” While on "Nashville”, Esten has been honored to perform at the Grand Ole Opry and the historic Ryman auditorium. He was also honored to officially "flip the switch" at the 2013 Graceland Christmas Lighting ceremony. Many of the songs he has performed as Deacon (Undermine, Sideshow, Playin' Tricks, and including "I Know How To Love You Now", an original that he co-wrote with his friend, Deana Carter) are available on the seven very successful "Nashville" soundtracks that have been released to date.

Clare Bowen Clare Bowen stars as Scarlett O’Connor on ABC’s musical drama series “Nashville”. Created by Callie Khouri and also starring Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere, the series premiered in October 2012 to critical acclaim and was nominated in both 2013 and 2014 for “Favorite New TV Drama” at the People’s Choice Awards. Comprised of originals and covers performed by Bowen and her co-stars, the debut album The Music of Nashville: Season 1, Volume 1 rose to #1 in the Country Album category and #12 in the All Genre Album category on iTunes within hours of its release by Big Machine Records on December 11, 2012. Big Machine has continued the momentum with the release of both The Music of Nashville: Season 1, Volume 2 on May 7, 2013 and The Music of Nashville: Season 2, Volume 1 on December 10, 2013. In 2012, Bowen appeared as the female lead in Jared Moshe’s directorial debut Dead Man’s Burden. The Western film explored the story of a husband and wife (Bowen’s “Martha”) trying to survive in New Mexico following the Civil War. Justin Lowe from The Hollywood Reporter declared Bowen “shines in the central performance as Martha.” Bowen’s other film credits include Not Suitable for Children opposite Ryan Kwanten, The Clinic, and 10 Days to Die. A native Australian, Bowen has appeared in several of her home country’s iconic television dramas, including “Home and Away”, “All Saints”, “The Cut”, and “Chandon Pictures”. She also appeared in the Australian film The Combination. Credits in several musical theater productions are certainly a testament to Bowen’s range as a performer. Most recently, she starred as Wendla in the 2010 Geordie Brookman-directed rock musical Spring Awakening, under the co-artistic direction of Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton at the Sydney Theatre Company. Bowen resides in Nashville, Tennessee, where she is currently collaborating with T-Bone Burnett on her debut solo album. Burnett served as the Executive Music Producer on Season 1 of “Nashville”.

Bob Newhart Television actor and comedian Bob Newhart was born George Robert Newhart on September 5, 1929, in Oak Park, Illinois. One of four children, Newhart was born to George David Newhart and Julia Pauline Burns. Newhart picked up the name Bob while in high school. The commonly used phrase "Let George do it" prompted Newhart to change his name. Eventually he thought, "Maybe I'll go by Bob," and thus the nickname was born. After high school, Newhart attended Loyola University Chicago and graduated with an undergraduate degree in business management in 1952. Shortly after, he was drafted into the military. Newhart served in the Army from 1952 to 1954, fighting in the Korean War. Upon his return, Newhart worked as an accountant and advertising copy editor in Chicago while also occasionally performing in a local theatrical stock company and writing comedy sketches for the radio. While working at the ad agency, Newhart and co-worker Ed Gallagher would make extended, random phone calls to each other throughout the workday. They eventually decided to record the phone calls and use them as audition tapes for comedy work. In 1959, a disc jockey in Chicago heard his material and introduced Newhart to the head of talent at Warner Bros. Records, who signed the 30-year-old accountant to a contract based on his recordings. The year after he was signed by Warner Bros., Newhart released his first album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart. Although the album was a collection of Newhart's first performances ever as a stand-up comedian, the record company's gamble on the untested performer proved to be worth the risk. Audiences appreciated Newhart's unique form of storytelling, which merged the comedian's down-to-earth sensibility with absurd situations. A huge success, Button-Down Mind was the first comedy album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard chart, even beating out Elvis Presley and the cast album of The Sound of Music. The album earned not only impressive sales but also high praise from critics, and garnered Newhart a Grammy Award for Album of the Year and another for Best New Artist. Newhart released The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back! For his second album, he

received another Grammy, this time for Best Comedy Performance - Spoken Word. In the 1960s, Newhart began to branch from just being a strong voice in comedy; with several TV performances he became a prominent face in comedy too. In the fall of 1961, he was given a TV variety show, aptly titled The Bob Newhart Variety Show (196162). Critics praised the series for successfully translating the comedy on Newhart's albums to the small screen—it was awarded a Peabody Award in 1961 and an Emmy Award for Outstanding Program Achievement in the Field of Humor in 1962—but the show didn't get high enough ratings to keep it on the air for more than one season. It may have been Newhart's first attempt at leading a television show, but it definitely wasn't his last. But before he made his reemergence in television, Newhart made his film debut the same year that his variety show was canceled. He had a supporting role in the film Hell Is for Heroes. He began to prioritize films and television roles over nightclub performances and appeared in a series of films in the late 1960s and '70s, including Hot Millions (1968), Catch-22 (1970) and Cold Turkey (1971), before he got his second television series. Instead of the variety show format he had worked in previously, The Bob Newhart Show (1972-78) was a sitcom on CBS that featured Newhart as a psychologist in Chicago. The show was well-received by audiences, possibly because of the traditional essence of the series during a time when other television programs were becoming more controversial. With an all-star cast and Newhart at the helm, the sitcom lasted six seasons before the cast and crew decided to end the series. Newhart took a hiatus from television for four years, then returned with yet another popular sitcom, simply named Newhart (1982-90). With another all-star cast behind him, Newhart's new lead role got the actor and the series several Emmy nominations. After the show's conclusion, Newhart came back to television with the series Bob in 1992, but the series only lasted one season. In 2013, he made an appearance on the popular series The Big Bang Theory, for which he surprisingly received his first Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

Encore Society Have you heard about MPAC’s planned giving program? After providing for your family and loved ones, you may want to remember the Mayo Performing Arts Center in your plans. A bequest, annuity or trust will help prepare our organization for future growth. A planned gift to MPAC will ensure that everything you cherish about this institution - from the celebrated artists that grace our stage season after season to the extensive education and community engagement programs that touch thousands of people each year - remains for generations to come. We would also love to hear from you if you have already included MPAC in your plans. By informing us now, we will automatically enroll you as a lifetime member of the Encore Society, an honorary recognition group for individuals who have named MPAC in their estate plans. Members of the Encore Society enjoy special benefits and privileges. If you are interested in leaving a legacy to MPAC, or would like more information, please contact Marcia Hunter, Major Gifts Manager at mhunter1@mayoarts.org or at 973-539-0345 ext 6514. Thank you.
