A welcome from our President Happy 80th birthday to MPAC! Mayo Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit organization, has been at the heart of arts and entertainment in Morristown since it first opened as the single screen Community Theatre in 1937. Eighty years later, it is an honor and a privilege to be part of a community that is committed to sustaining the legacy that Walter Reade originally founded. Through your support, this magnificent historic venue has helped to create wonderful experiences and memories for so many; memories that we continue to share with our family and friends through many generations. As part of our mission, we proudly continue the tradition of giving back, offering enriching programs that serve the public, often at no cost. Be on the lookout throughout the year as we announce free lectures, movies, concerts on the mainstage, performances on the plaza and events throughout the community. We hope you will take advantage of these diverse and exciting opportunities. Education and outreach are integral parts of our mission. MPAC brings the arts into schools, community centers, nursing homes and hospitals – bringing joy, inspiring hope, and instilling a sense of creativity and community to students in schools lacking arts programs and to those unable to travel to the Theatre. MPAC’s Miracle Project classes for those with special needs, and our relaxed performances on the main stage, are perfect examples of how the arts can truly became a transformative experience in someone’s life. It is the goal of our entire organization to create an accessible and inclusive environment that offers something for everyone. Thank you for supporting us and for joining us again this season. We are thrilled to continue the tradition of offering memorable experiences, this year, and in the next eighty years. Warm Regards,
Allison Larena President & CEO
A welcome from our Board Chairman Mayo Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit arts organization, contributes to the well-being and economic health of the community we serve. Earlier this year, Americans for the Arts, a national nonprofit arts advocacy group, completed a study of the economic impact of the arts locally and nationally in 2015. The study indicates that communities that support the arts and culture not only enhance their quality of life—they also invest in their economic well-being. Working with Morris Arts and Art Pride New Jersey, the study provides compelling evidence that the nonprofit arts and culture sector is a $31.8 million industry in Morris County—one that supports nearly 1,000 full-time equivalent jobs and generates $3.2 million annually in local and state government revenue. Whether serving the local community or out-of-town visitors, a vibrant arts and culture industry helps local businesses thrive. Unlike most industries, the arts leverage significant event-related spending by their audiences. Nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, which spent $15.8 million during 2015, leveraged a remarkable $16 million in additional spending by their audiences—spending that pumped vital revenue into restaurants, hotels, retail stores, parking garages, and other local businesses. As the largest arts organization in the county, our economic impact alone has been calculated at over $15 million. MPAC is proud to be a valuable community partner. As we look toward the future, we hope to meet the growing needs of our community and be the central resource for entertainment and arts education that makes Morristown one of the best communities in New Jersey to work, live and raise a family. We appreciate your support in helping us achieve this goal and hope that you will continue to recognize the value of Mayo Performing Arts Center in your community. Sincerely,
Joseph M. Goryeb Chairman, Board of Trustees
Miracles Continue to Happen at MPAC Autism and Special Needs Programs Continue to Expand
New Jersey historian John T. Cunningham often described the revival of MPAC as “The Miracle on South Street.” In January 2017, new miracles began to take place in MPAC’s education studios every Thursday afternoon with the launch of The Miracle Project. Those miracles became evident on the evening of June 6, when students from MPAC’s inaugural Miracle Project classes took the stage for their final session open performance in front of family and friends, and everyone in the theatre shared a special moment of sheer joy. The Miracle Project is an evidenced-based, award-winning program that uses music, dance and theatre to bring out the best of children with autism. Its goal is to provide children with tools to build communication, social skills, self-esteem through inclusive theater and to become part of a performing arts community. When MPAC decided to establish a special needs program within its Performing Arts School, Education Director Cathy Roy was determined to create one that would be in line with the school’s philosophy to serve each child, build their selfesteem and give every participant an individual experience. The Miracle Project made for an ideal match. MPAC found its kindred spirit in the Los Angeles based program, established by Elaine Hall and chronicled in the Emmy Award winning documentary Autism the Musical. “MPAC and The Miracle Project are so aligned in the way we approach the arts that it was such a natural fit,” said Ms. Hall.
The Miracle Project’s arrival at MPAC comes at a time when a staggering 2.5% of children in the State are diagnosed with autism, considerably higher than the national average of 1.5%. Two 22-week courses for children ages 9-15 began in January 2017. One course was offered for children who required individual aides and featured neuro-typical “peer mentor” students who volunteered to undergo the program alongside their peers with autism. The second course was designed for students who do not require individual aides, along with 10 volunteer students. “This wasn’t just about singing and performing, but also about learning social skills, how to make a friend, gain confidence and become part of something awesome,” said Jenny Boeckel, MPAC Education Manager, who participated in the program as a teacher. Every parent and every teacher wants their child to feel special, included and important, and MPAC’s Miracle Project’s Classes delivered on that promise of giving them a wonderful experience. “For an hour each week, my son got a chance to participate in a class he loves,” said Elle, a mother of one of the students. As the only program in New Jersey that is certified to use The Miracle Project’s methodology, MPAC has ambitious plans to grow the program to meet the needs of the autism community. This fall, MPAC has doubled the program, expanding to four classes and is looking for ways to develop programs for adults with autism. In addition, the Theatre continues to offer “relaxed performances” for families to enjoy an entertainment experience together. Major support for MPAC’s Miracle Project program was provided by Jacobs Levy Equity Management. Additional support was provided by the Paragano Family Foundation, The Calais Foundation, Joseph M and Jeanne Goryeb, Gil and Claire Zweig, Nicholas and Elizabeth De Angelo and the Walmart Foundation and by Starlight Ball 2016 Fund-A-Need Donors. SYNOPSIS: ALL SINGING! ALL DANCING! ALL BIG BAND! Based on Bob Hope’s 1942 USO tour to the troops in the field, The ALL HANDS ON DECK! Show is a new, two-act revue performed by four charismatic singer/dancer/comics and a 9-piece orchestra featuring the songs, dances and laughs that America has loved since the ‘40s. From 1941 to 1945, our nation was embroiled in a great world war. Hollywood’s brightest stars, directors and screenwriters responded to the call of duty by sending our men in uniform real living entertainment. The Setting: July 4th, 1942. Act One brings a war-bond drive to “your hometown." Hosted by Ted Crosley (the Bob Hope-type) and featuring John Handley (Hollywood’s favorite new tenor), Daisy Maxwell (the “sweater girl”) and Betty Blake (the “bond bombshell”), all goes as planned until an urgent telegram informs the group that bad weather has forced a hasty departure in order to make it back to Chicago for a live radio broadcast on Armed Forces Radio. But, instead of leaving as instructed, Crosley and his gang decide to stay and do the live radio broadcast right from your theatre! Act Two becomes a live radio show complete with a live studio audience! On air antics, classic commercials, timeless songs and hilarious, impromptu skits power the radio show until the performance comes full circle with a big patriotic finish that pays tribute to both active duty and veteran members of our armed forces. Songs include: Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Atchison Topeka And The Santa Fe, I’m In The Mood For Love, Pennsylvania Polka, I’ll Never Smile Again, Any Bonds Today?, Don’t Fence Me In, America The Beautiful, Deep In The Heart Of Texas, Thanks For The Memory and a powerful Military Medley. The ALL HANDS ON DECK! Show boasts 42 of the Greatest American songs ever written (classic Big Band hits in original arrangements) all packaged in a fun-filled, true-to-life reproduction of the kind of USO show Bob Hope and Jack Benny would have taken to the troops: classic humor and great music from those special days of road shows, war-bond drives, and radio broadcasts. COME CELEBRATE America with The ALL HANDS ON DECK! Show!

TOMMY JAMES & THE SHONDELLS Tommy James’ road to superstardom began when a nightclub DJ in Pittsburgh discovered a two-year-old record by “The Shondells” and played it at his weekend dances. The crowd response was so overwhelmingly positive that radio deejays started spinning it and an enterprising record distributor bootlegged it, selling 80,000 copies in ten days. By May of 1966 “Hanky Panky” was the number one record in Pittsburgh and Tommy James was a sensation.
Tommy James was on a roll! Not only did the total sales of his four 1969 hits top those of the Beatles that year, his second volume of greatest hits - The Best Of Tommy James and The Shondells (featuring “Ball of Fire”) – also appeared and ultimately sold over 10 million copies.
A Pittsburgh promoter tracked Tommy down at his home in Niles, Michigan and urged him to “come on down!” Unable to put the original group back together, Tommy hired a hot P-burgh R&B bar band to replace them. Two weeks later he signed a record deal with Roulette Records. The label, in turn, put their promotion team to work on “Hanky Panky” and made it the summer smash of ‘66. Thus began one of the longest strings of nonstop hits in recording industry history!
In 1970 he released the gritty rock ‘n’ roll Travelin’ album (thought by many to be the band's best work) which contained the gold singles “She” and “Gotta Get Back To You”. Tommy then took a break.
Alone among his 1960s contemporaries, Tommy had successfully made the transition from a Top 40 pop singer to a respected classic rock album artist.
Upon his return, Tommy wrote and produced the million selling single “Tighter, Tighter” for the group Alive And Kickin’. Over the next four years Tommy scored an additional 12 chart singles, among them “Come To Me,” “Ball and Chain,” “I'm Comin’ Home,” and “Draggin’ The Tommy James promptly followed “Hanky Line.” Panky” with two more million selling singles “Say I Am (What I Am)” and “It's Only Love” - and During that time he also produced the the Hanky Panky album, which went gold just albums Tommy James, Christian Of The World, and My Head, My Bed And My Red Guitar; the four weeks after its release. latter of which he recorded in Nashville with With three hits under his belt, Tommy brought an all-star cast that featured ace guitarist in producers Bo Gentry and Ritchie Cordell, and Pete Drake and Elvis Presley sidemen, Scotty the three produced seven back-to-back smash Moore and DJ Fontana. singles: “I Think We're Alone Now,” “Mirage,” “I In 1974 Tommy left Roulette Records and Like The Way,” “Gettin' Together,” “Out Of The released the In Touch and Midnight Rider albums Blue,”“Get Out Now,” and the party rock rave-up for San Francisco-based Fantasy Records. “Mony Mony.” The Gentry/Cordell/James team Returning to the East coast in 1980, he signed also produced three platinum albums. with Millennium Records and racked up three In 1968, Tommy became one of the first more chart singles, including the million selling artists to experiment with music videos, AC charttopper “Three Times In Love.” In the creating a mini-film around “Mony Mony” for 1990s, Tommy formed Aura Records and scored theatrical showings, thirteen years before three Top 5 AC hits from his Hold The Fire album. His autobiography – Me, The Mob and The Music – became a bestseller for Simon & Schuster, garnered rave reviews from critics and industry insiders, and was chosen by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 25 greatest rock ‘n’ roll memoirs of all time (#12).

PIANO BATTLE BLACK AND WHITE ARE READY TO FIGHT Whether or not they are friends in real life, mercy is the last thing on their mind when fighting on stage. Winning the audience‘s heart is the only thing that counts! The brainchild of internationally acclaimed pianists Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis, the PIANO BATTLE sees the duo go head-to-head on stage, charming and enchanting the audience with a variety of classical pieces. The show is divided into several rounds, each featuring a certain musical style. The two artists, with distinctly different performance techniques, will even go so far as to improvise on the tunes you request. YOU ARE THE JUDGE A competition wouldn’t be a competition without a jury and here, YOU will be the judge! All members of the audience are invited to vote on the pianists’ performances and will eventually crown the winner. Of course, this might not be the limit of your participation... Part serious classical recital, part tongue-in-cheek performance by two classy pianists, the PIANO BATTLE is a unique concert that pleases both the ear and the eye. Originally created for the Hong Kong City Festival, PIANO BATTLE has been performed for soldout audiences in Europe, the United States and Asia, including the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, Seoul Arts Center and an open air spectacle before 6,000 fans in Taiwan. The show has also been well received in the pianists‘ home country where Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis have performed for enthusiastic audiences in concert halls and at festivals all over Germany - including the Beethovenfest Bonn, the Rheingau Musik Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Prinzregententheater Munich and the Philharmonie Berlin. _______ Paul Cibis Educated in Hanover, Berlin and London, Paul Cibis has performed on five continents and established an international presence. He has been invited to international festivals in the UK, Germany, USA, South Africa, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to his many concert appearances, he has been featured in radio and television programs around the world, including the BBC, WDR, 3Sat, ORB, HR, RTHK, and CCTV. Paul has released several albums, including a collection of French mélodies and piano works by Berlioz, Fauré and Debussy, in collaboration with German mezzo-soprano Barbara Senator. His latest album features a collection of solo pieces by Taiwanese composer Kai-nan Huang. A committed pedagogue, Paul has taught at Trinity College of Music in London and frequently gives master classes in Germany, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea. www.paulcibis.com Andreas Kern Born in South Africa, Andreas Kern studied piano in Cologne and Berlin with Günter Ludwig and Pascal Devoyon. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has extensive experience in Europe, Canada, Hong Kong, China, Japan, India and South Africa. Keen to present classical music in unconventional ways, Andreas has developed concert projects and formats that often feature unorthodox venues, or whereby musicians collaborate with artists in other fields, such as theatre and dance. Such performances have successfully drawn a much wider and younger audience than traditional classical concerts. Andreas Kern has also created the critically acclaimed “arte lounge” for the French-German TV channel Arte. As the show’s co-host, he has performed with musicians including Mischa Maisky, Renaud Capucon, Sol Gabetta, Sarah Chang, Vadim Repin, Nils Mönkemeyer, Elina Garanca, and Jörg Widmann. He was also the architect of the Piano City Berlin Festival 2010, which featured more than 100 piano performances held in Berlin within one weekend. Since then, Piano City has branched out to other cities such as Milan, Naples and Barcelona. www.andreaskern.net

WHO'S WHO IN THE CAST Marcus Collins (The Lad) Marcus Collins, at just 29 years old, has already achieved great heights in his singing and musical career after his journey started on TV’s highest rating talent show, The X Factor. Marcus became a firm favourite right from the beginning and his talent was nurtured by his mentor, Gary Barlow. Marcus proved himself adept at putting in startling musical performances, moving through different styles and genres of music with ease. However, it was his slick interpretation of Motown and soul classics that assured him a place in the final, where he got to sing his series showstopper ‘(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher’ as well as teaming up with Gary for a spectacular duet.
Marcus has proved that with hard work, tremendous talent, and a little bit of help from Gary Barlow, he has been able to live his dream of pursuing a sustained and continued career in music and entertainment. Since their debut in Australia back in 1996, they have gone on to become known around the globe for their distinctive harmonies and stellar live shows, riding waves to the top of the charts, and have won over fans all over the planet. The foursome - Toby Allen, Phil Burton, and brothers Andrew and Michael Tierney - recently celebrated their 27th anniversary as a group. With that kind of staying power, combined with their incredible vocal talent, it is no surprise that they have not only headlined sold-out national tours in the home country of Australia as well as shows all over the world, but, they hav become critically-acclaimed headliners in residency in Las Vegas for over eight years with more than 1600 performances.
The Songs of Motown II (2006), Get Ready (2007), A Symphony of Hits (2008), Vegas: Songs from Sin City (2010), The Christmas Album (2013), Jukebox (2014) and the latest addition to the canon, Gimme Some Lovin’: Jukebox Vol II (2016). Among their hits are such classic as ‘Wishes’, ‘Don’t Say Goodbye’, ‘Don’t Cry’, ‘Eternal Flame’, ‘He Don’t Love You’, ‘When You Say You Love Me’ and their collaboration with John Farnham ‘Every Time You Cry’.
One of the world’s first “boy bands,” Human Nature’s biography is in their set list for their current Jukebox show. “Some Americans that come to see our show have never heard of Human Nature before,” explains Mike. “We have to tell our story of how we got together when we were kids in high school and what motivated us to stay together and why we’re who we are. We tell that through the music and use the ‘jukebox’ as our way to move through In 2009, Human Nature re-signed to the the music that's inspired us.” prestigious Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino for a three-year residency at the famed Sands The Jukebox show is a playlist of not only the Showroom with their all-new show “Jukebox.” group’s influences, but the greatest vocal hits The Jukebox concept takes its name from the of all time.
