A WELCOME FROM OUR PRESIDENT Welcome to our 25th Anniversary Season! It seems like it was just yesterday when community volunteers came together in 1994 to reclaim this building from emerging mushrooms and mildew, after sitting boarded up and dormant for years. But here we are 25 years later, a beautiful, awardwinning, leading nonprofit performing arts center, attended by over 240,000 people annually. Over the 18 years that I have had the honor to serve as chief executive of the theatre, there have been so many memorable events and wonderful moments that I’ve had the pleasure to experience with you. I hope the event you will enjoy today generates that same magic and excitement. Furthermore, I have had the opportunity to get to know so many of you over the years and I cannot thank you enough for your enthusiastic support. Thank you for coming to enjoy spectacular productions, and for your continued commitment to MPAC’s growth and success. As a nonprofit performing arts center at the heart of our community, it is with tremendous pride that we serve as the cornerstone to a thriving arts scene in Morristown. The goal of our Board of Trustees, hard-working staff and selfless volunteers is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that celebrates the diversity of our community. The arts are where all of us can come together to share unique experiences. Exciting things await us this season. Beyond what you see on our stage, we continue to enhance our outreach by hosting more free community events. We are investing in our future generations and working on solutions to meet the growing demand for Performing Arts School classes. We continue to seek means to improve and enhance your experience in every way possible. We may be celebrating 25 years, but we’re just getting going. I look forward to seeing you throughout this season. Warm Regards,

Allison Larena President & CEO

A WELCOME FROM OUR BOARD CHAIRMAN Dear Patron, It is a pleasure to welcome you to our 25th Anniversary Season at MPAC. This season promises to be one of both excitement and anticipation. Excitement, because we again present a great lineup of shows, education opportunities and community events. Anticipation, because we look forward to sharing with you our plans for the future. MPAC is in the early stages of planning an expansion of our facility. Our goal is to expand the very popular and growing Education Department and Performing Arts School; build a smaller secondary performance space; and add loading and parking facilities to improve operational efficiency and enhance our patron experience. We hope to share these plans with you soon. If you are interested in learning how you can support this project, we welcome having a conversation with you. The growth of Morristown over the past 25 years goes hand in hand with the rebirth of MPAC. More and more, towns across the country have seen the value that a strong arts anchor institution such as MPAC can have on economic growth, business development and quality of life. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we thank you for your generous support of MPAC to help sustain our organization, our programming and our education programs. If you are not yet a member, I sincerely hope that you will consider the value of supporting MPAC, as we work together to make Morristown a vibrant arts community, and a great place to live, work and raise a family. Sincerely,

Gregory J. Supron Chairman, Board of Trustees

THE MIRACLE ON SOUTH STREET Celebrating 25 years!

An

ni v e

rsary season

The 2019-2020 season marks the 25th anniversary of Mayo Performing Arts Center. Originally built as Morristownʼs premier movie theater in 1937 and called The Community Theatre, MPAC (renamed in 2009) was saved from the wrecking ball in 1994 by a group of community volunteers who envisioned the value a vibrant arts center could have in a town.

On September 29, 1994, a Gala Concert by the Kirov Orchestra of St. Petersburg, conducted by Valery Gergiev, with soloists bass Jerome Hines and pianist Alexander Slobodyanik, marked a new era for Morristownʼs Community Theatre. When he was first introduced to the silent and neglected theatre in early 1993, Mr. Slobodyanik was impressed by its parameters and acoustics. He believed that an unconventional approach, of artistic support and performances of the highest caliber, would prove the theatreʼs potential and “give it new life.” For this mission he gathered the support of his friends and colleagues, artists of international prominence, and created the Morris International Festival of the Arts. In February 1994 he invited his friend, maestro Valery Gergiev to see the theatre with the hope that he would commit to the opening concert. Inside the frigid and icicle-clad hall Mr. Gergiev announced, “The Kirov will play here.” When the lease for use of the Theatre was finally signed in July 1994, the magic began. Inspired by the promise of an extraordinary event, a unique opportunity to save their beloved theatre, hundreds of volunteers came forth to be a part of the massive rehabilitation and preparations for the September 29th concert.

Much has changed since then. Today, Morristownʼs community theatre has blossomed into a world class performing arts center, undergoing four major renovations since 1994. In 2016, MPAC was awarded Outstanding Historic Theatre by the League of Historic American Theatres. MPAC ranks in the top 50 most attended mid-sized performing arts centers in the world, according to Pollstar Magazine. MPAC remains Morristownʼs crown jewel, and has evolved into a world-renowned performing arts center. With over 200 events on its stage every year, MPAC attracts over 240,000 patrons, generates ticket sales in excess of $9 million and has an economic impact of over $15 million on the area. Tony Bennett, Ringo Starr, Jerry Seinfeld, Gladys Knight, and many more of the worldʼs best known performers have graced the stage. It is the Morris County home to the New Jersey Symphony and New Jersey Ballet, and over the years has provided space for many other New Jersey-based arts organizations. Beyond concerts is the growth of MPACʼs education and outreach programs that bring the arts experience to children in communities throughout New Jersey, engaging the next generation of arts lovers in educational programs that instill confidence, inspire learning and encourage teamwork. From after-school classes to field trip programs, our teen Performing Arts Company to the Miracle Project for children on the autism spectrum, and from the annual spring production to our student recognition programs, MPAC education initiatives touch the lives of over 40,000 children and families annually. “The Miracle on South Street,” as it was dubbed by late historian John T. Cunningham, continues to inspire.

TERRY FATOR: THE VOICE OF ENTERTAINMENT One might think that with finding success after 25 years of performing at county fairs and oddball venues, the moral of singercomedian-celebrity impressionist Terry Fator’s story might be the cliché of: Never give up on your dreams. But, when it comes to Fator’s story of success after 40, that old adage doesn’t quite ring true.

success at a younger age. It can screw your brain up. Just look at a lot of today’s young stars. But at 42, you have perspective and you’re more grounded so that when the time comes that all of a sudden millions of people see and like what you do, it doesn’t go to your head too much.”

Fator’s story began long before America’s Got Talent. His first taste of entertainment came at age eight when he tried his hand at magic with the help of a hypnosis book. “I unsuccessfully tried to hypnotize my friends, but then in fifth grade I found a book on ventriloquism and that came pretty quickly for me. I was always fascinated with all forms of entertainment, but especially magic and puppets. But other kids in school were doing magic, and I wanted to be original so ventriloquism became my thing,” says Fator, who rounded out his creative endeavors by taking on the lead in many school and church That “something” was NBC’s hit competition plays as a kid, and later fronted the band show, America’s Got Talent. After turning Texas the Band from the late ‘80s through down a chance to compete on the first season 2001. He was close to signing a record deal of the show, his fans wrote the show saying with Warner Bros. until they told him he had they just had to have Fator on. I worked for 25 years playing every fair, small club and kids’ party I could and it just felt like it wasn’t going to happen. I resigned myself to just playing kids parties. That was okay for me. But, I didn’t stop working and doing the thing that I love to do and getting better at it. Once I did that, something finally happened for me.”

Thursday, January 16, 2020 After decades of performing, Fator felt at the end of his creative rope. “It was just so discouraging because I felt I had something big to offer that millions would want to see, but I couldn’t find that break. Even five months before America’s Got Talent, I did a show in 1,000-seat theater and only one person showed up. I was so down. I thought, ‘Why am I doing this? It’s never gonna happen. I’ll never have millions of people that enjoy my gift.’ But then I thought, ‘Wait a second. I’m lucky that I get to do what I love and I do love this. So what if I always have to play for first graders or kids parties or county fairs? I’m still doing what I love and I’m not going to stop. It’s better than going to work at a real job to just pay the bills,’” says the showbiz journeyman.

The industry has certified him a bona fide superstar, as well, with Simon Cowell declaring Fator to be “one of the best entertainers in the world” and The Best of Las Vegas Awards honoring “Terry Fator: The VOICE of Entertainment” with awards for Best Show, Best All-Around Performer, Best Impersonator and Best Overall Show.

Today, Fator impersonates more voices than he can count with the help of more than a dozen characters singing everything from Nat King Cole, Garth Brooks, Roy Orbison, Dean Martin, Elvis, Louis Armstrong, Bruno Mars and many more.

“The best thing about all of this is that now my creativity is not shackled by my lack of finances. Now, if I have an idea I can actually do it and do it right,” he says. In 2013, Fator released a country music album It Starts Tonight as well as a children’s book Lamu, The Christmas Kitten which is a story of the life of Jesus Christ as told through the eyes of his cat. In 2014, Terry Fator: Live in Concert, a DVD showcasing Fator’s 2013 Las Vegas show, was released nationwide and simultaneously an updated version of the Las Vegas stage show was launched.

Today, Fator finally has that audience of millions who enjoy his work through his sold-out and award-winning live show, multiplatinum selling DVDs (his debut DVD, Terry

No portion of this performance may be photographed, recorded, filmed, taped, broadcast or mechanically reproduced without the written consent of the Artist and/ or the Presenter. Mayo Performing Arts Center is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Program subject to change.

AUDRA MCDONALD Audra McDonald is unparalleled in the breadth and versatility of her artistry, as both a singer and an actor. The winner of a record-breaking six Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards, and an Emmy Award, she was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2015 and received a 2015 National Medal of Arts—America’s highest honor for achievement in the arts— from President Barack Obama. Blessed with a luminous soprano and an incomparable gift for dramatic truth-telling, she is as much at home on Broadway and opera stages as she is in roles on film and television. In addition to her theatrical work, she maintains a major career as a concert and recording artist, regularly appearing on the great stages of the world. Born into a musical family, McDonald grew up in Fresno, California, and received her classical vocal training at the Juilliard School. A year after graduating, she won her first Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for Carousel at Lincoln Center Theater. She received two additional Tony Awards in the featured actress category over the next four years for her performances in the Broadway premieres of Terrence McNally’s Master Class (1996) and Ragtime (1998), for an unprecedented total of three Tony Awards before the age of 30. In 2004 she won her fourth Tony, starring alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs in A Raisin in the Sun, and in 2012 she won her fifth—and her first in the leading actress category—for her role in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. In 2014 she made Broadway history and became the Tony Awards’ most decorated performer when she won her sixth award for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill—the role that also served as the vehicle for her Olivier Award-nominated 2017 debut in London’s West End. In addition to setting the record for most competitive wins by an actor, she also became the first person to receive awards in all four acting categories. McDonald’s other theater credits include The Secret Garden (1993), Marie Christine (1999), Henry IV (2004), 110 in the Shade (2007), her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut in Twelfth Night (2009), Shuffle Along, or, The

Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed (2016), and Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2019). McDonald made her opera debut in 2006 at Houston Grand Opera, where she starred in a double bill: the monodrama La voix humaine by Francis Poulenc and the world premiere of Send by Michael John LaChiusa. She made her Los Angeles Opera debut in 2007 starring alongside Patti LuPone in John Doyle’s production of Kurt Weill’s Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. The resulting recording won McDonald two Grammy Awards, for Best Opera Recording and Best Classical Album. On the concert stage, McDonald has premiered music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Adams and sung with virtually every major American orchestra— including the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, and San Francisco Symphony— and under such conductors as Sir Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Leonard Slatkin. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 1998 with the San Francisco Symphony under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas in a season-opening concert that was broadcast live on PBS. Internationally, she has sung at the BBC Proms in London (where she was only the second American in more than 100 years invited to appear as a guest soloist at the Last Night of the Proms) and at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, as well as with the London Symphony Orchestra and Berlin Philharmonic. It was the Peabody Award-winning CBS program Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years that first introduced McDonald to television audiences as a dramatic actor. She went on to co-star with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber in the lauded 1999 Disney/ ABC television remake of Annie, and in 2000 she had a recurring role on NBC’s hit series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. After receiving her first Emmy nomination for her performance in the HBO film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit, directed by

Saturday, January 18, 2020 Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson, McDonald returned to network television in 2003 in the political drama Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award-winner Lawrence O’Donnell, Jr. (The West Wing) and starring Josh Brolin. In early 2006 she joined the cast of the WB’s The Bedford Diaries, and over the next season she had a recurring role on NBC’s television series Kidnapped. In 2008 she reprised her Tony-winning role in A Raisin in the Sun in a made-for-television movie adaption, earning her a second Emmy Award nomination. From 2007 to 2011, she played Dr. Naomi Bennett on the hit ABC medical drama, Private Practice. In 2013, her critically acclaimed performance as the Mother Abbess in NBC’s live telecast of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, opposite Carrie Underwood as Maria, was watched by an estimated 18.5 million people across America. She received a fourth Emmy nomination for her role in HBO’s film special of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill in 2016. Having first appeared as US attorney Liz Lawrence on CBS’s legal drama The Good Wife in 2009, she joined the cast of CBS All Access’s The Good Fight as a season regular in 2018. McDonald also makes regular television appearances as a performer, host, and talkshow guest. A familiar face on PBS, she has headlined telecasts including an American Songbook season-opening concert, a presentation of Sondheim’s Passion, a Rodgers and Hammerstein tribute concert titled Something Wonderful, and five galas with the New York Philharmonic: a New Year’s Eve performance in 2006, a concert celebrating Sondheim’s 80th birthday, Carnegie Hall’s 120th anniversary concert, One Singular Sensation! Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch, and, most recently, Sweeney Todd. She was also featured in the PBS television specials A Broadway Celebration: In Performance at the White House and A Celebration of American Creativity, singing at the request of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. THE 5 BROWNS The 5 Browns are delivering on their dream to wake up classical music by introducing it to the widest, largest and most excited audience they can find. Whether performing individually or together in various combinations from duo to complex five-piano arrangements, The 5 Browns reveal a deep connection to the intent of their material while bringing a fresh energy and dynamic character to the color and tonal spectrum of their sound. The 5 Browns – Ryan, Melody, Gregory, Deondra and Desirae – all attended New York’s Juilliard School. In fact, they became the first family of five siblings ever accepted simultaneously. The quintet enjoyed their first wave of critical attention in February 2002 when People magazine dubbed them the “Fab Five” at about the same time they were featured on Oprah and 60 Minutes. The 5 Browns have released 3 CDs that each went to #1 on Billboard Magazine’s Classical Album Chart. The New York Post has proclaimed: “One family, five pianos and 50 fingers add up to the biggest classical music sensation in years…When these kids do Rachmaninoff, they’ll make you forget about Marshall amps.” The quintet has garnered extensive coverage from media outlets ranging from The Tonight Show, Good Morning America, The Today Show, and The View, to CNN, Fox and Friends, Public Radio’s Performance Today, as well as The New York Times, Parade, People, the Los Angeles Times, the Sunday London Telegraph and Entertainment Weekly. The 5 Browns tour extensively and have performed in numerous venues including Grand National Theater in China, Suntory Hall in Japan and, in the United States, The Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Symphony Hall in Chicago and Carnegie Hall’s Isaac Stern Auditorium and Alice Tully Hall in New York City. Individually and collaboratively, they have soloed with orchestras around the world, including the Saint Louis Symphony, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris.

In addition to touring, The 5 Browns are published writers. Their book, Life Between the Keys, a lighthearted collection of personal stories, was published by Phoenix Books in March 2009. The group was also featured in a PBS TV special, “The 5 Browns In Concert,” which aired on PBS stations throughout the country. A highlight for the quintet was a commissioned five-piano concerto written by famed composer Nico Mühly. Under the direction of Maestro James Conlon, the concerto premiered in 2011 at the Ravinia Festival with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The 2017/18 season will include the release of their 7th album with Grammy® award-winning producer Adam Abeshouse, which in addition to musical favorites from their childhood will also feature an illustrated book authored by NY Times best seller Liesl Shurtliff. The 5 Browns are managed by IMG Artists, LLC, and are exclusive Steinway Artists. -*Due to maternity leave, Melody Brown will be replaced by Stephen Beus for this this event. Stephen Beus “Mesmerizing… explosive… intelligent… he belongs on the world stage” (Salt Lake Tribune). In the space of four months, American pianist Stephen Beus won first prize in the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, first place in the Vendome Prize International Competition (Lisbon) and he was awarded the Max I. Allen Fellowship of the American Pianists Association (Indianapolis). As a result of winning the Juilliard School Concerto Competition Mr. Beus made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Juilliard Orchestra and James DePreist, playing Prokofiev Concerto No. 3. He has also performed as guest soloist with the Gulbenkian Symphony (Lisbon), Oxford Philomusica, the Tivoli Symphony (Copenhagen), the Tbilisi National Opera Orchestra, the Northwest Sinfonietta (Seattle), the Royal Philharmonic of Morocco (Casablanca), the Vaasa Symphony Orchestra (Finland) as well as with the Hamburg, Indianapolis, Nashville,

and international competitions throughout his youth, capturing the attention of both audiences and critics. Commenting on Mr. Beus’ competition success, Fanfare magazine writes: “In some ways Beus doesn’t fit the mold of the typical competition winner. His playing is strikingly original and, despite his youth, he has an interpretive voice all his own… Above all, his playing is so natural as to seem effortless and the sound he produces has extraordinary richness and depth, not quite like anyone else’s.”

Mr. Beus holds degrees from Whitman College, The Juilliard School, and Stony Brook University, and his teachers have included Leonard Richter, Robert McDonald, Gilbert Kalish, Christina Dahl, and Paulette Richards. He has recorded on the Endeavor Classics, Harmonia Mundi, and Centaur Born and raised on a farm in eastern Records labels. DARLENE LOVE The New York Times raved …“Darlene Love’s thunderbolt voice is as embedded in the history of rock and roll as Eric Clapton’s guitar or Bob Dylan’s lyrics.” Through the years, Darlene Love continues to captivate audiences worldwide with her warm, gracious stage presence and superb performances.

her weekly appearances on Shindig to a recent guest spot on the PBS special entitled Women Who Rock. An autobiographical film is currently on the drawing board with a development deal from Oprah Winfrey based on the book My Name is Love, written by Darlene.

This has been a banner season for Darlene. Her new CD, released via Sony/Columbia/ Wicked Cool Records has been greeted with sensational critical reaction and numerous TV presentations. Produced by fellow musician and long time friend Steven Van Zandt, it includes selections written for Darlene by Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Webb and many others including two notable songs by Stevie himself.

In the early years, Darlene’s background vocals as lead singer for The Blossoms behind The Righteous Brothers, Dionne Warwick, Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley (to name but a few) set the stage for her emergence as a star in her own right.

At the Academy Awards, Darlene sang her powerful acceptance speech on behalf of all of the performers in the winning film Twenty Feet From Stardom. As she raised the Oscar, the entire house stood with a cheering ovation lead by the wildly applauding Bill Murray. It was another special moment in a great career. A Grammy award soon followed for the soundtrack of the film.

Her Billboard hits include: “He’s A Rebel,” “The Boy I’m Gonna Marry,” “Wait ‘Til My Bobby Gets Home,” “He’s Sure the Boy I Love” and the #1 holiday classic “Christmas Baby Please Come Home,” a song that she performed annually with Paul Shaffer and the CBS Symphony Orchestra on The Late Show With David Letterman for some 29 years before David retired last December.

Darlene Love received her industry’s highest award when Better Midler, a great fan of her work, inducted her into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During the celebration, the two Since the early sixties, as part of Phil Spector’s ladies enjoyed performing “He’s A Rebel” wall of sound hit factory, this great lady has together. As part of the festivities, Darlene done it all...from major motion pictures like also sang “He’s A Fine, Fine Boy” backed by the highly successful Lethal Weapon series another distinguished fan, Bruce Springsteen. to Broadway hits like Hairspray and Grease. ELVIN BISHOP & CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE ELVIN BISHOP in 1962), he is as vital and creative an artist today as he was when he first hit the national scene in 1965 with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. He is still as slyly good-humored and instantly crowd-pleasing as he was when he was effortlessly creating solo hits during the 1970s. His reemergence on Alligator Records in the late 1980s and into the 1990s, along with his more recent releases on Blind Pig and Delta Groove, insure his place on the short list of bona fide blues guitar heroes. Elvin’s music mixes thick blues grooves with timeless rock flavors spiced with a touch of country, a dab of Moms Mabley’s and Pigmeat Can’t Even Do Wrong Right, with hilariously Markham’s ribald black comedy, and the laid spot-on cover art by musician/artist Paul back feel of his Northern California home. Prior to cutting their debut LP in 1965, Michael Bloomfield joined the group as second lead guitarist, and created a groundbreaking, all-star band. The self-titled The Paul Butterfield Blues Band introduced electric Chicago blues to the rock audience for the first time. With the release of East/ West in 1966, the band’s popularity hit an all-time high. Their straight Chicago blues sounds drifted further into progressive and experimental rock ‘n’ roll and—with two world-class lead guitarists on board— the band helped pave the way for groups featuring multiple virtuoso guitarists, like The Allman Brothers and Derek and the Dominos. The Rolling Stone Record Guide says that Bishop, along with Bloomfield, recorded “brilliant guitar passages that did as much as anything to establish the mystique and heroism of modern rock guitarists.”

Towards the end of the 1960s, after recording three albums with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Elvin decided to move on, heading for the San Francisco area. “I liked it there. I didn’t have to look over myshoulder,” Bishop recalls. He became a regular at the famed Fillmore Auditorium jam sessions, playing alongside Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, B.B. King and many others before embarking on a solo career. He recorded first for Fillmore Records, then Epic and then for Capricorn, where his career took off. He charted with “Travelin’ Shoes” before scoring big in 1975 with “Fooled Around And Fell In Love” (the song reached number three on the pop charts). After a seven-year recording hiatus, Elvin returned to his blues roots in 1988, signing with Alligator and releasing Big Fun to critical and popular acclaim. He followed in 1991 with Don’t Let The Bossman Get You Down! and

As Bishop continues to tour and release new music, his stature just continues to grow. Through the years his music has appeared in film and television, including the 1997 use of “She Puts Me In The Mood” (from Big Fun) in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown. In 2005 he performed on the internationally televised Grammy Awards broadcast alongside Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Gretchen Wilson, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Allman Brothers’ guitarist Dickey Betts. He recently appeared in the documentary Born In Chicago. In 2012 and 2013 he was nominated for inclusion into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Now, with Can’t Even Do Wrong Right, Bishop again is ready to share his happy-golucky vibe with his fans around the world. His guitar/vocal/songwriting triple-threat talent, along with his ability to deliver a rollicking good time wherever he goes, assures his not-to-be-missed live performances are consistently packed to the gills with cheering fans. The Chicago Tribune says Bishop plays “good-time music guaranteed to put a smile on your face...serious playing, potent slide guitar and razor-sharp licks.” Musically, it’s as if Elvin Bishop can do no wrong, and that is perfectly all right. CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE Charlie Musselwhite’s journey through the blues was from his birth in Mississippi to Memphis, Chicago and California. Arriving in Chicago in the early sixties, he was just in time for the epochal blues revival. In 1966 at the age of 22 he recorded the landmark Stand Back! to rave reviews. A precipitous relocation to San Francisco in 1967, where his album was being played on underground radio, found him welcomed into the

Fifty years of nonstop touring, performing and recording have reaped huge rewards. Charlie Musselwhite is living proof that great music only gets better with age. AIR SUPPLY Graham Russell & Russell Hitchcock met on May 12, 1975, the first day of rehearsals for Jesus Christ Superstar in Sydney, Australia; they became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and, of course, singing.

simple yet majestic songs created a unique sound that would forever be known as Air Supply. However, it is the live shows that always hold audiences captive around the world. They were the first Western group to tour China, Taiwan, and countless other countries that before would not allow pop music across their borders. In 1983 they recorded “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” by Jim Steinman which solidified the group as a permanent force in modern music. This song was released on The Greatest Hits album which soared past 7 million copies.

After the showsʼ performances at 10:30, they would play pizza parlors, coffee bars and night clubs with just one guitar and two voices. They quickly gained a reputation for great harmonies and for original songs that Graham was constantly writing. They made a demo on a cassette of two songs, “Love and Other Bruises” and “If You Knew Me” and took it to every record company in Sydney. “Lost in Love”, “All Out of Love”, “The One That Everyone turned it down but one — CBS You Love”, “Sweet Dreams”, and “Making Love Records — who admired their unique style. MILOS: THE VOICE OF THE GUITAR Miloš Karadaglić Firmly positioned as a leading exponent of his instrument, “The hottest guitarist in the world” (Sunday Times), Miloš Karadaglić, continues to top record charts and delight audiences worldwide. His first three releases on Deutsche Grammophon achieved major chart successes around the globe and turned him into “classical music’s guitar hero” (BBC Music Magazine) overnight. His 2014 recording of Rodrigo’s concertos had the Sunday Times calling him “The King of Aranjuez”, while Blackbird - The Beatles Album (2016) was received with unanimous acclaim. Miloš has appeared in recital at almost all major concert halls and festivals around the globe and has worked with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors. He is also the first ever classical guitarist to have performed in solo recital at the Royal Albert Hall in London, The Guardian commenting: “More extraordinary by far, however, was the way a single guitarist... could shrink the Hall’s cavernous space into something so close.” The Independent concluded: “... a sleight of hand that makes Karadaglić not only a magician, but a serious and accomplished musician”. In August 2018, Miloš returned to the Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Symphony Orchestra to give the world premiere of ‘Ink Dark Moon’, an exciting new guitar concerto written for Miloš by Joby Talbot. The performance, part of the 2018 BBC Proms, was received with great enthusiasm, with BachTrack commenting that “Karadaglić provided a supremely tailored performance, exploring the full range of sounds and colours.”

Guitar”, this programme sees him perform solo and with various ensembles throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia and the United States. “No other guitarist can match his graceful blend of personal charisma and technical finesse.” (The Independent) Miloš remains committed to commissioning new repertoire, especially when it comes to the repertoire for guitar and orchestra. 2018/19 included another concerto world premiere of Howard Shore’s first ever guitar concerto, which was commissioned for Miloš by the National Arts Centre Orchestra Ottawa and Alexander Shelley. Miloš is a passionate supporter of music education and acts as a Patron of Awards for Young Musicians as well as Ambassador for Live Music Now, the London Music Fund and the Wigmore Hall’s Learning Programme. Taking every opportunity to promote classical music to the widest possible audience, Miloš often finds himself in the role of radio and TV presenter, having appeared as a mentor for the nationwide talent competition Guitar Star on Sky Arts, in addition to co-presenting the 2014 BBC Young Musician competition and returning as a member of the jury in 2018. Born in Montenegro in 1983, Miloš first started playing the guitar at the age of 8. At 16, he successfully applied for a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music and moved to London where he continues to live while keeping close ties with his family and homeland. He was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in 2015. In 2016 BBC Music magazine included him amongst six of the greatest classical guitarists of the last century.

In the 2018/19 season, Miloš curates a musical journey through the repertoire that Miloš records exclusively for Decca Classics/ has been most important to him so far in Universal Music. He performs on a 2007 his life and career. Titled “The Voice of the Greg Smallman guitar.

MPAC’S MISSION Mayo Performing Arts Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, presents a wide range of programs that entertain, enrich, and educate the diverse population of the region and enhance the economic vitality of Northern New Jersey. The 2019-2020 season is made possible, in part, by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as support received from the F.M. Kirby Foundation and numerous other foundations, corporations, and individuals.

WHY MPAC EXISTS

MPAC is where our community comes together to be inspired, entertained, and uplifted by the power and the passion of the performing and visual arts.

Through our education programs and Arts in the Community events, MPAC is dedicated to providing children and adults with meaningful experiences in the arts, helping to unleash creativity, shape future leaders and build stronger communities.
