Welcome to another spectacular season at MPAC! As a nonprofit performing arts center at the heart of our community, it is with tremendous pride that we serve as the cornerstone to a thriving arts district in Morristown. With over 200 performances, 60 classes, two dozen art exhibitions and nearly two dozen free events annually, MPAC is where our family, friends and neighbors come to enjoy, be inspired by and participate in the arts. Now in our 24th season, our commitment as an essential community partner continues to be a core value to our mission. For example, this past summer we launched our Arts in the Community initiative, a series of over 15 free concerts, movies and events for the community. This included diverse world music at the Morristown Green, emerging and innovative artists at 70 South Gallery, movies at MPAC and outdoor evening events at Vail. Overall, over 5,000 people attended these free events that included poetry, reggae, classical guitar and even salsa dancing. We are committed to providing arts experiences by and for the diverse populations we serve. Our Education programs, which include performing arts training, student recognition, youth productions and more, provide cultural enrichment to young people at a time when arts programs are often on the chopping block in school districts. We continue to find new ways to expand these programs throughout our region. The addition of The Miracle Project New Jersey and relaxed performances has been another exciting step toward providing opportunities of diversity, equity and inclusion. This award-winning innovative program for individuals on the autism spectrum and with other special needs is just the beginning of what we hope to achieve in this area. MPAC has also been proactive in creating work opportunities for adults with special needs and other barriers to employment. We thank you for your enthusiastic support of our venue and for returning year after year. Each season, we strive to make a difference, create a memory, inspire a child and dazzle an audience. I hope that the performance you are about to enjoy fulfills that promise. Warm Regards,

Allison Larena President & CEO

Dear Patron, It is a privilege and an honor to have been named the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Mayo Performing Arts Center. As first a patron, and then a donor and Trustee, I have seen MPAC evolve into one of the most innovative and successful performing arts centers in the state. What the Theatre has achieved in terms of artistic excellence, arts education, community outreach, and economic impact is nothing short of remarkable. Now, as Board Chairman, I look forward to helping to guide MPAC into its exciting future. MPAC is the anchor institution of a thriving cultural arts district in Morristown. As we look to the future, there is much more that we can do to engage our broader community. The arts create opportunities for shared experiences that bring all of us together in exciting and positive ways. Please consider joining the MPAC family by becoming a member. Member dollars are reinvested in our community, providing arts education opportunities, free community concerts and events, programs for students with special needs and scholarship opportunities for children. I am fortunate to be working with a dedicated Board committed to making MPAC thrive, and a professional staff and volunteers devoted to creating memorable experiences. I would like to thank our previous Board Chairman, Joseph M. Goryeb, for his service to MPAC and his guidance as I transition to this position. It is my hope that my stewardship will help to propel MPAC and Morristown as the leading arts destination in the state. I look forward to the challenge and to meeting you at the Theatre. Sincerely,

Gregory J. Supron Chairman, Board of Trustees

BATTLE OF THE BIG BANDS: THE GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA VS. THE CAB CALLOWAY ORCHESTRA

The Glenn Miller Orchestra The first Glenn Miller Orchestra did not make it at all. It was a total and absolute economic failure. But Glenn knew what he wanted, held to that dedication and relentlessly worked to succeed. He launched his second band – the one that lives on today – in March of 1938. The Glenn Miller Orchestra has been a “hit” ever since. The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all dance bandleaders back in the Swing Era of the 1930’s and 40’s. A matchless string of hit records, the constant impact of radio broadcasts and the drawing power at theatres, hotels and dance pavilion, built and sustained the momentum of popularity. Glenn disbanded his musical organization in 1942 at the height of its popularity to volunteer for the Army. There, he organized and led the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. It went to Europe to entertain servicemen performing numerous live and radio shows. On December 15, 1944, Major Miller took off in a single engine plane from Europe to precede his band to France, disappearing over the English Channel, never to be seen again. The army declared him officially dead a year later.

With the release of the major motion movie The Glenn Miller Story featuring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson in 1954, interest and popular demand led the Miller Estate to authorize the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra. On June 6, 1956, and under the direction of drummer Ray McKinley who had become the unofficial leader of the Army Air Force Band after Glenn’s disappearance, the reformed Glenn Miller Orchestra performed its first concert and has been on the road ever since. Other leaders have followed Ray including clarinetists Buddy DeFranco and Peanuts Hucko, trombonists Buddy Morrow, Jimmy Henderson, Larry O’Brien and Gary Tole, and tenor saxophonist Dick Gerhart. Since January 2012, vocalist Nick Hilscher leads the band. Today, the 18 member ensemble continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements both from the civilian band and the AAFB libraries. Additionally, it also plays some more modern selections arranged and performed in the Miller style and sound. Just as it was in Glenn’s day, the Glenn Miller Orchestra today is still the most sought after big band in the world.

The Cab Calloway Orchestra The Calloway Orchestra became famous for its hot, unpretentious sound that featured confident soloists, simple, effective and highly rhythmic lyrics, precision sectionwork, a driving Kansas City style Rhythm section, low ranging saxophone writing, big powerful wails, uninhibited attitude, broad emotional range, and blues grounded inflection, and the charismatic singing and band leading of Cab Calloway. It is multifaceted, open, fun loving, and has elements of Swing, Dixieland, Blues, European Classical, Boogie Woogie, early BeBop, early Rock, early R&B, and a host of other musical styles. It always has a dramatic flair, and an enduring universal appeal to all sorts of audiences. In the late 1920’s Cab Calloway was the only major bandleader to have shared the stage under the

legendary Jazz master - Louis Armstrong. Cab and Louis worked together at the hottest nightclub in Chicago at the time – the famed Sunset Café. Cab’s band leading older sister, Blanche Calloway, introduced the two future musical giants in 1925. Blanche, by all accounts was more famous than either Cab or Louis at the time. “Blanche Calloway and her Joy Boys” made some of the earliest recordings of Louis Armstrong as a sideman with Blanche’s band way back in 1925. Cab Calloway later credited Armstrong with freeing up his singing voice, and said that Louis was one of the main influences in his career. Cab probably had a bit of influence on Louis as well, as they were lifelong friends. Cab introduced his grandson; Calloway Brooks nicknamed “CB”, to Louis Armstrong when Brooks was just 9 years old.

FRIDAY, MAY 17, 2019 Cab was always around great trumpet players such as Jonah Jones, Doc Cheatham, Shad Collins and Dizzy Gillespie. Cab encouraged Dizzy Gillespie to record “Pickin the Cabbage” and “Paradiddle” when he was with the band, both of which are considered to be precursors to Be-bop and “modern” Jazz. Many historians feel that the Calloway Orchestra was an incubator for that next era in jazz – the BeBop era. In 1930 Cab and his band, The “Missourians”, roared into Harlem’s Cotton Club to replace the Duke Ellington Orchestra while Duke was on tour. Cab’s debut was a huge success they changed their name to Cab Calloway and his Cotton Club Orchestra, and took up residency at the club. Calloway Brooks first met Ellington at age 3. The Calloway theme song “Minnie The Moocher”, was one of Cab’s many wonderful works of American Urban Folklore about the culture and nightlife of Harlem. It became so popular that “Hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-ho” became a catch phrase throughout the world. “Minnie” was innovative in its use of responsorial audience participation. As a major part of the Harlem Renaissance, Cab and his Orchestra recorded a whole series of songs following “Minnie The Moocher” that referenced the hip subculture of Harlem, and Cab’s special Urban Folklore of the era including: “Zaz Zuh Zaz,” “The Ghost of Smoky Joe,” “You Gotta Hi-De-Ho,” “Jitter Bug,” “The

Man from Harlem”“The Scat Song,” and “Harlem Hospitality,” all of which were wildly popular. About Calloway Brooks "CB": The “Prince of Hi De Ho” Brooks obtained his first guitar at age 7 won his first musical awards at age 9 from the Guild Institute of Music and went on to become a graduate of the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, the first major Conservatory in the US to offer a degree in Jazz Music. During his years in Boston, Brooks studied with such luminaries as Charles Banacos, Jaki Byard, Robert Cogan, Jaki Byard, Hankus Netsky, Mick Goodrick, and MacArthur Award winner Ran Blake. He also credits the many years of experience with his grandfather Cab Calloway as “a cornerstone” of his musical education. Brooks has performed with such big bands as The Cab Calloway Orchestra, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, and the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, and the Fairfield Counts, and with such internationally known artists as Cyrus Chestnut, Kenny Burell, Ran Blake, Don Byron, Anthony Braxton, Shelia Jordan, Joel Martin, Ellis Larkins, Rufus Reid, Alan Dawson, Milton Hinton, Gary Bartz, Big Nick Nicholas, Marshall Allen. Brooks has performed at such major venues as The Kennedy Center For the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center, Jordan Hall ,Pall Hall, Paine Hall, The Meyerhauf Auditorium, Freylingheusen Auditorium, and The Rome Opera House.

AN EVENING WITH STYX The six men comprising Styx have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide by entering their second decade of averaging over 100 shows a year, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. Styx draws from over four decades of barnburning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a Styx set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man,” from the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady” to the seething indictment of preening, primping pageantry for pageantry’s sake of “Miss America,” from an individual yearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness” to a soul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball,” from the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away” to the grainy allin gallop of that rugged “Renegade” who had it made, the band draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature sound. Styx hit its stride with guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s first LP with the band, 1976’s Crystal Ball, and then they become the first group to score four triple-platinum albums in a row: The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces of Eight (1978), Cornerstone (1979), and Paradise Theater (1981). Over the ensuing decade, Styx weathered the shifting winds of the public’s musical taste, reconvening for a highly successful 1996 Return to Paradise tour that was expertly documented on both CD and DVD in 1997. With a little help from their many friends in Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra, One With Everything (2006) became a

hybrid orchestral rock blend for the ages. And on The Grand Illusion / Pieces of Eight Live (2011), the band performed at its peak when tackling every track from a pair of their finest triple-platinum albums back to back. Not only that, but the band re-recorded two discs’ worth of its classic material with much finesse and musculature, aptly known as Regeneration Volume I & II (2011 & 2012). Observes Tommy, “Now you have something you can take home with you and go, ‘Yeah, that’s the band I saw last night.’ ” After more than a decade together on the road, this incarnation of Styx is looking forward to performing as many shows as it can as long as it can. “It all comes back to the chemistry,” says bassist/vocalist Ricky Phillips. “The legacy of this band will be that it brought joy to millions of people,” notes drummer Todd Sucherman. Observes keyboardist/vocalist Lawrence Gowan, “We’ve always tried to explain why this is this happening. It’s obviously a multitude of factors, but the main one is that our show is really good! And if it’s really good, they’re going to come to see it again.” Styx hopes it’s a wave that never crests. “Every night, we go on that magic carpet ride together,” observes original bassist Chuck Panozzo, who joins the band on tour as often as he can. “Music is this amazing force that comes from a higher place. I'm humbled for this band to have the great success that it has,” says cofounding guitarist/vocalist James “JY” Young. “We just want to keep on doing this,” asserts Tommy. “We want to let life take its course and let this music continue to be the soundtrack to it. And this band will continue to evolve as long as we live and play this music.” The jig is up, the news is out: The Esprit de Styx is alive and well, and now it’s time to see for yourself. Welcome to the Grand Evolution.

COLLECTIVE SOUL & GIN BLOSSOMS

Ed Roland – Vocals / Guitar Dean Roland – Rhythm Guitar Jesse Triplett – Lead Guitar / Background Vocals Will Turpin – Bass / Background Vocals Johnny Rabb – Drums / Background Vocals Collective Soul are pumped and primed to celebrate their 25th anniversary in 2019 in allout style, but they’re really just gearing up for the long haul. Ever since the barnburning rock band from Stockbridge, Georgia burst onto the national scene with the runaway success of their multi-platinum 1993 debut Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid and its ensuing megasmash hits like “Shine” and “Breathe,” they’ve been on an upward trajectory that’s seen them play to sold-out audiences across the globe while concurrently amassing an impressive catalog of beloved songs instantly recognizable by their titles alone.

with songs featuring piano and strings to those with a lot of guitar riffs. Blood is an accumulation of all the different styles we’ve used over the years — but it’s still Collective Soul. I think it’s the best we’ve ever done. I know you should think that, but I really do think it’s the best. It’s a good, consistent record. We’re just so proud of it.”

From the very beginning of the band’s career, Roland always had his eye on the prize. “When ‘Shine’ came out, we got asked, ‘What’s your goal with this band?’ I said, ‘I want to have a whole row of Collective Soul recordings on the shelf.’ That was my goal,” Roland recounts. “Me, Indelibly memorable tracks like “December,” I always wanted to see the full body of work. “The World I Know,” “Gel,” and “Heavy” (to That’s all I ever wanted. I knew I could write, and name but a few) all evoke a collective sense of as the band progressed and got better, that’s heartfelt observational universality and earnest why we wanted to keep going. I don’t think we positivity — in short, they’re the jukebox ever doubted it. We, as the artists — we had no heroes of a new generation. Indeed, the secret fear. Robin Wilson – Lead Vocals & Guitar Jesse Valenzuela – Vocals & Guitar Scott Johnson – Guitar Bill Leen – Bass In late 80’s Gin Blossoms started to grow a huge following as the #1 local music draw in Phoenix and certainly were the hometown heroes of their favorite hang, Tempe, Arizona. Gin Blossoms’ indelible jangle-pop sound was evolving during radio’s diverse mix of hair bands and grunge music superstars like Nirvana. After the Phoenix New Times named them the city’s best rock band, they qualified to play at the South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin Texas in 1989. That same year, College Music Journal dubbed them the “Best Unsigned Band in America” and added an invitation to perform on MTV’s New Music Awards in New York City. Taking their name from a caption on a W.C. Fields photo, Gin Blossoms signed a record deal with A&M and recorded their first EP “Up And Crumbling” in 1991. But, it was not until their breakout record New Miserable Experience in 1992 that their rise to fame began. New Miserable Experience kept the band on the charts for almost 3 years with singles “Hey Jealousy,” “Allison Road,” “Until I Fall Away,” “Mrs Rita,” and “Found Out About You.” The album took the airwaves by siege and held MTV hostage with multi cross-over hits in 4 different radio formats. It was this record that rocketed the band into the mainstream, going on to sell over 5 million copies making the band a 90’s radio mainstay. In 1995, Robin Wilson, Jesse Valenzuela and veteran composer Marshall Crenshaw wrote the bands 4th of 9 sound track inclusions: “Til I Hear It From You.” The smash hit was released as a Gin Blossoms single and it appeared on the platinum sound track for the film Empire Records.

It Matters” which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Performance by a Duo or Group. “It was pretty cool to lose a Grammy to the Beatles. Who else would you want to lose out to” says Jesse. The album rocketed into Billboard’s Top Ten and a year of touring helped push the record past 1.5 million in sales. In five years, the band released two EP’s, two LP’s and over 12 singles that fuel today’s record sales to over 10 million. Their blend of Pop & Rock, now known as Jangle-Pop, became a musical force that helped define the sound of 90’s radio. In 1997, while at peak success and after numerous appearances on late night TV such as The Late Show With David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Arsenio Hall, Saturday Night Live, The Grammys and endless touring, the group disbanded and began a four year hiatus. It was not until a 2001 New Years Eve performance in Tempe that the members reformed and began touring and recording again. “Since 2001, we have been performing over 120 shows a year. This is what we most enjoy doing” says Wilson. “It’s our job and I know all of us are really grateful that we can earn a living making records and entertaining people on the road. We’re doing something we really love! I don’t know many people that can say that when they go to work everyday.”

In 2005, former A&M president Al Cafaro resigned the band and partnered to record their 3rd full length album in over 10 years. Major Lodge Victory landed on Billboard’s Top 200 and was the #10 Indie album of the year. Released on August 8, 2006, it included hits “Learning The Hard Way” 1996 saw the final record of the decade for Gin and the appropriately titled “Long Time Gone.” Blossoms “Congratulations I’m Sorry.” The album Billboard magazine called this gem “an effortless brought two more hits; “Follow You Down” which triumph of melodic perfection.”“This was a really spent ten weeks in the Top Ten and “As Long As fun record to make,” says Scotty.

COLLECTIVE SOUL & GIN BLOSSOMS Their next album, 2010’s No Chocolate Cake, lands Gin’s back on the singles chart again with “Miss Disarray” and the album shot straight to #1 on Amazon, hitting Billboard’s Top 200 at #73 and the Indie chart at #14. Because the band members no longer live in the same city— Wilson divides his time between Tempe and New York; Valenzuela is in Los Angeles—putting the sonic pieces of No Chocolate Cake together presented an exciting new challenge for the band. While Wilson contributed a handful of songs, the bulk of the material chosen for the 11 track set was written by Valenzuela, either solo or with different collaborators, including Danny Wilde of The Rembrandts. Over the years, Gin Blossoms have toured over 25 different countries including a five-city tour of Iraq in 2010. “It was so much fun to entertain our troops. It really helped widen my understanding on the sacrifices they make to protect us at home and abroad. I hope all Americans understand how important it is for us to extend our thanks,” says Robin.

a level of experience where you instinctively know what works. The best ones are those that feel like they’ve already been there, as if they are just waiting to naturally emerge. I think it’s the quality of the songs we have and Robin’s voice. It’s also a matter of trust. I know when I bring in a song that Robin will know how to sing it, Scotty will know how to play it and Bill will know the groove. The key is to not try so hard. There’s fans from the old days and fans from today. It blows my mind to see these 20-year-old kids – I’m like, ‘Dude, what are you doing here?’ But somebody hipped them to this music and they’re there to enjoy it like anybody else.” The road has also proven exceedingly fertile ground for both Valenzuela and Wilson, with each talented tunesmith promising the inevitable arrival of new Gin Blossoms material. As they approach their third decade, Gin Blossoms remain a rare breed – rock ‘n’ roll lifers, destined to continue creating, crafting, and performing for audiences ever rapt by their glorious catalog of material.

“We never rush the writing of a new record” says Jesse. “There’s something to be said for having www.ginblossoms.net

STEVE SOLOMON'S MY MOTHER'S ITALIAN, MY FATHER'S JEWISH, AND I'M IN THERAPY! Starring the author and Broadway star of the show, Steve Solomon. This show has now become one of the longest running one-man comedies in history! The show just celebrated its four thousandth performance. In My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy! using dialects, accents and sound effect, Steve brings to the stage dozens of wild characters we all relate to; all brought to life by Steve’s comedy magic. His four shows have had audiences in three countries guffawing since 2003. Almost one million people have seen his shows. The audience follows along on this wonderfully funny journey about growing up, mixed marriages, ex-wives, dogs, cats, dieting, and dozens of other side-splitting situations we can all relate to. It’s described as “One part lasagna, one part kreplach, and two parts Prozac,” but you don’t have to be Jewish or Italian to love this show. All you need is to know what it feels like to leave a family dinner with heartburn and a headache! Thirty five people, one toilet and one plunger.

About the Author For Steve Solomon, the road to a career in comedy began during his childhood in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, where he picked up the many accents and dialects he heard on the streets of his multi-ethnic neighborhood. This self-professed “class clown” grew up to become a physics teacher and an assistant superintendent of schools. Steve used humor, dialects, and sound effects to inspire his students and tick off his fellow administrators. Eventually, however, Solomon felt the irresistible urge to follow his heart and write comedy. He returned to his roots to write the autobiographical one-man show: My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m in Therapy! The show played for two sold-out years in New York City and has toured internationally in more than 100 cities. It spun off three sequels, including My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m STILL in Therapy! and My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m Home for the Holidays. He’s quite proud of his newest hit show: CANNOLI, LATKES & GUILT...the therapy continues! All four of his shows are currently touring.

HAPPY TOGETHER TOUR 2019 THE TURTLES Very few rock performers have remained as vital through the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s as have Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. Initially they made their mark with the Turtles, then they joined Frank Zappa‘s Mothers of Invention, and then they glided into their own Flo & Eddie persona, dishing out records that have encompassed a multitude of personalities. They’ve always been smart enough to have responded to the latest worthwhile trends in a fashion that has yielded an abundance of quality records, and more than their share of hits. Two guys from Westchester. The one with the curly hair and glasses, and the other with the beard. That’s how Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (AKA Flo and Eddie) refer to themselves. Howard Kaylan (changed in 1965 from Kaplan, because that’s how he always wrote his name) was born June 22, 1947 in the Bronx, and spent his first eight years in Manhattan before his father took a job with General Electric in Utica, New York. After the family moved there for a year or so, they moved to the Los Angeles area, settling in Westchester. Mark Volman was born April 19, 1947. After a brief period living in Redondo Beach, his family moved nearby to Westchester. Little did they know it at the time, but both Mark’s and Howard’s musical direction was forged by old Mr. Ferguson who gave clarinet lessons in a drafty cubicle above the Westchester Music Store. Mark went to Orville Wright Jr. High, while Howard went to Airport Jr. High. They didn’t know each other, but they both pursed their lips around clarinet reeds for Mr. Ferguson, who ran them through the gamut of “Deep Purple” and “Anapola, My Pretty Little Poppy”. The puckers soon gave way to wide grins when their friendship formed in the Westchester High A Cappella Choir, which was conducted by Robert Wood. Mark was a first tenor, Howard a second tenor. In 1963, Al Nichol, Howard Kaylan, and Chuck Portz had just changed the name of their novice surf combo from the Nightriders to the Crossfires. Mark Volman knew them from the Westchester High A Cappella Choir and joined the group (initially as a roadie). Also in the band were Don Murray from Inglewood High and Dale Walton.

Dale was later replaced by Tom Stanton, who in turn, was later replaced by Jim Tucker. The Crossfires adapted their own, original versions of standards like “Money” and “What’d I Say”… They set their sights on the South Bay area (Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Torrance) and quickly found themselves winners of several Battle of the Bands competitions that resulted in a residency at the Revelaire Club. It was here that demands were made upon them to learn the various hit recordings of stars like the Coasters, Sonny and Cher, the Righteous Brothers and others for whom they would occasionally become the backup band. Despite their following at the Revelaire, frustration set in. The members weren’t in high school anymore, two were married, and the band wasn’t earning enough money. On the night they were submitting their resignation from the Revelaire and about to break up, they were approached by Ted Feigin and Lee Lasseff who signed them to a brand new, nameless record label, later to be called White Whale. It was time for a name change as well. The group liked “The Half Dozen,” or “Six Pack,” but opted for Reb Foster’s suggestion, The Turtles (like The Byrds, right?). It was exactly the same band and the same songs – one week at the Revelaire they were the Crossfires, the next week they were the Turtles. It wasn’t long before the release of the Turtles' first single, their arrangement of a Bob Dylan song, “It Ain’t Me Babe.” It was an immediate hit – climbing into the Top Five nationally – quickly establishing the Turtles as a force of their own. Their first concert appearance was before 50,000 kids at the Rose Bowl, opening for Herman’s Hermits. CHUCK NEGRON Vocalist Chuck Negron grew up in the Bronx in the 1950s, pursuing his talents in basketball — for which he was recruited by colleges nationwide — and singing, which he explored with his doo wop group the Rondells. After playing basketball for Santa Maria, CA’s Hancock College and California State University in Los Angeles, Negron was ready to pursue his musical career. He remained in Los Angeles, eventually connecting with fellow singers Cory

FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 2019 Wells and Danny Hutton and forming Three Dog Night in 1968. They met with massive success, scoring 18 consecutive Top 20 singles, including number ones like “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” “Joy to the World,” and “Black and White.” Negron restarted his career by opening for Howie Mandel’s 1994 Atlantic City show, and the following year he released his debut album, Am I Still in Your Heart. Negron now divides his time between raising his family, performing, lecturing, and working with antidrug organizations like Musicians Assistance Program (MAP), MusiCares, and Cri-Help. 1999 saw the release of his biography, Three Dog Nightmare, and his second album, Long Road Back, the book’s musical counterpart. GARY PUCKETT AND THE UNION GAP Gary Puckett and The Union Gap had six consecutive gold records and sold more records in 1968 than any other recording act …Including The Beatles. Gary is one of a few artists whose first five releases went gold. Not even Elvis accomplished this. Mr. Puckett played a command performance at the White House for Prince Charles and Princess Anne by special invitation of the President. Gary has made more than 50 television appearances and has performed in a Made for TV movie. “Young Girl” was reissued by popular request in England where it reached number one and achieved a Silver Record Award for the second time. Gary was a founding member of the incredibly successful “Happy Together” Tour playing to sold out performances in over 100 cites nationwide. Gary was invited to tour with the Monkees on their national reunion tour, which established itself as the major box office success of the 1986 touring season. Gary performs to standing room only crowds doing over 150 performances each year. He currently resides in Clearwater Florida with his wife and family. THE COWSILLS The real-life inspiration behind the hit television series The Partridge Family, the Cowsills — comprised of teen siblings Bill, Bob, Barry, John, Susan, and Paul in tandem with mother Barbara

— were one of the biggest pop acts of the late ’60s, scoring a series of hits including “The Rain, the Park and Other Things” and “Hair” with their angelic harmonies and sun-kissed melodies. THE BUCKINGHAMS One of the most beloved and respected Chicago bands ever to explode onto the national scene, The Buckinghams’ live concerts pack power into 60s pop rock. Bringing back great memories with their chart-topping 60s hits, The Buckinghams include 70s favorites in their powerful sets, electrifying audiences with dynamic vocals and solid harmonies. Full-time since 1982, original Buckinghams Carl Giammarese and Nick Fortuna and their band have continued to deliver fastpaced, solid shows that bring crowds to their feet. Their No. #1 Billboard hit, “Kind of a Drag” is the standout that first made them famous. Next came 7 national chart hits, 15 singles, and 8 acclaimed albums. Billboard Magazine named them “The Most Listened to Band in America”; The Buckinghams became national favorites on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Smothers Brothers’ Comedy Hour, American Bandstand, and more. Thousands of loyal fans remain devoted today, as their hits continue to be heard on oldies radio, classic rock stations, Sirius/XM satellite and Internet channels. Enthusiastic and effervescent as when their records began their ascents up national charts, The Buckinghams’ Giammarese and Fortuna deliver nonstop, high-energy performances that audiences appreciate and request in shows filled with longtime fans, as well as new friends—teens and young adults. Today they’re still crowd-pleasing favorites, delivering a show packed with tremendous music and good humor. Audiences love The Buckinghams today as much as they first did in the 60s. With 3 songs on the Top 10 simultaneously, The Buckinghams enjoyed phenomenal success with hit singles including “Don’t You Care,” “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” and the national anthem of teenage love, “Hey Baby, They’re Playing Our Song”, on the national charts. In 2001, The Buckinghams were part of the successful “Solid Gold 60s” tour, featuring Tommy James & The Shondells, The Turtles, Gary Puckett & the Union Gap, & Grass Roots. PBS featured The Buckinghams on “The Sixties

HAPPY TOGETHER TOUR 2019 Pop Rock Reunion” in 2004. The Buckinghams headline festivals, play arenas, theatres, and casinos, wherever fans want to hear them. Playing the 2005 Presidential Inaugural Ball was a great honor for The Buckinghams. They were again invited to perform at the Bipartisan Agricultural Ball at the Presidential Inaugural festivities at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Washington, DC, on January 20, 2009. From 2008–2009, The Buckinghams released 3 new CDs—“Reaching Back”, “Standing Room Only,” and “The Joy of Christmas,” favorite standards & new tunes from their annual Christmas shows every year. In 2009, The Buckinghams were inducted into the prestigious Hit Parade Hall of Fame. The 2010 DVD/CD, “Up Close,” featured The Buckinghams live at the Star Plaza Theatre. “FlashBack!” a Buckinghams’ studio CD, was released in 2014. Carl’s solo CD,

“Living in the Moment,” was released in 2016. 14, The Buckinghams & Gary Puckett debuted “Groovin’ the 60s,” an Orchestral Events show, with symphonic arrangements of 1960s hits, and they’ve performed annual Buckinghams Christmas shows. Carl Giammarese and Nick Fortuna were on the Happy Together Silver Anniversary Tours (2010-2012, 2015), with The Turtles, Micky Dolenz, Mark Lindsay, Grass Roots, & Gary Puckett and others. They are popular entertainers booked for international cruises, including Where the Action Is and Flower Power Concert Cruises (2008–2019). Featured performers on WTTW’s, Cornerstones of Rock: American Garage show, it’s still shown on national PBS stations. They now are part of the Cornerstones of Rock Concert Tour across the country. The Buckinghams always deliver concerts that are certified “Solid Gold.”

BUDDY GUY LIVE IN CONCERT

As a courtesy to the artists and for the uninterrupted enjoyment of your fellow patrons, please turn off all electronic devices. No portion of this performance may be photographed, recorded, filmed, taped, broadcast or mechanically reproduced without the written consent of the Artist and/or the Presenter. Mayo Performing Arts Center is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Program subject to change.

BUDDY GUY The title of Buddy Guy's latest album says it all: The Blues Is Alive and Well. The legendary blues artist's eighteenth solo LP and follow-up to 2015's Born to Play Guitar showcases his raw and unadulterated sound, its fifteen tracks a true pleasure for aficionados and genre newcomers alike. "I got children and grandchildren who didn't know who I was, but nowadays we can play outdoor concerts and see kids that are eight, nine, twelve years old coming to me and saying, 'I didn't know who you was, but I read what Eric Clapton said about you,'" Guy explains when discussing his mindset around the new record. "I'm always trying to make an album that someone accidentally plays where some kid hears it, picks up a guitar, and helps keep the blues alive." And it only takes one listen to The Blues Is Alive and Well to realize that Guy's mission has been more than accomplished here. The record is arriving on the heels of a spate of high visibility for the 82-year-old performer: at the 2016 Grammys, he picked up a trophy for “Best Blues Album” honoring Born to Play Guitar, and that same year he hit the road for a U.S. tour opening for Jeff Beck. In addition to bringing the house down for a recent sold-out performance commemorating the closing of New York City's B.B. King's Blues Club and Grill, he recently appeared on David Letterman's Netflix talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. A truly restless and energetic performer, The Blues Is Alive and Well is the latest triumph in an already-legendary career. The Blues Is Alive and Well began to come together when Tom Hambridge, frequent Guy collaborator and producer, came to the man with a collection of songs he figured would be perfect for a new full-length. "He's like some of the older guys I used to play with," Guy enthuses about working with Hambridge. "When you play with a band for ten or twelve years, they almost know what you're gonna do. He's the type of guy who feels what I'm gonna do. Even in my early Chess Records days, you had Willie Dixon and several other guys affiliated with those hit records, and this kid just has that feel too. He brought the songs in, and hopefully we did a good job." And how: The Blues Is Alive and Well's fifteen tracks feature pristine production without losing the signature lived-in grit that Guy's

been known for his entire career, from the lowslung riffage of "Bad Day" to the squealing solos of "Somebody Up There." Guy sounds every bit as vital and youthful here as he did dating back to his early collaborations with the late Junior Wells, and it's inspiring to hear a veteran artist laying down the blues with such gusto. Among the contributors to The Blues Is Alive and Well: young gun James Bay, who joins him on the aching "Blue No More," as well as Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, who contributes to the stomping barroom rambler "You Did the Crime." "Mick made a comment to me when he heard the song: 'Is that my voice? I didn't know it was still that strong,'" Guy states. "Before the late Junior Wells passed away, we did a whole tour with Mick. They exposed us a lot. I owe a lot of things to those guys, because they put us in places that we hadn't been, and they haven't forgotten that. We got a relationship between us. Whenever they come to town, they stop in the loudest blues club in Chicago and call me, and I'll go in the kitchen and fix us something. We still have a lot of fun." And Jagger's not the only Rolling Stone to hop on The Blues Is Alive and Well: Keith Richards contributes to the warm "Cognac," as does Jeff Beck. "Those guys have been my friends before they got famous," Guy reminisces while discussing his rejoining with old friends. "I went to England and those guys looked at me while I was playing a Stratocaster and said, 'Don't you know a Stratocaster can't play the blues?' I said, 'What do you mean?' It was a joke, because it was a country/western instrument before that—it wasn't supposed to play the blues. We all bought Stratocasters after that." And even as Guy pushes forward with his astounding career, he's careful not to forget his late contemporaries who inspired him along the way. "I went to sleep yesterday and woke up and all the great blues players are no longer with us. Muddy, Wolf, B.B.—they're all gone. Before they passed away, when they were in their prime, we used to have a drink and a laugh and talk about how when one of us is gone, the others have to keep it going. I'm trying to do something to keep this music that I love so well alive." And with The Blues Is Alive and Well, it's clear that the music—and Guy himself—ain't going away anytime soon.
