Welcome to another spectacular season at MPAC! As a nonprofit performing arts center at the heart of our community, it is with tremendous pride that we serve as the cornerstone to a thriving arts district in Morristown. With over 200 performances, 60 classes, two dozen art exhibitions and nearly two dozen free events annually, MPAC is where our family, friends and neighbors come to enjoy, be inspired by and participate in the arts. Now in our 24th season, our commitment as an essential community partner continues to be a core value to our mission. For example, this past summer we launched our Arts in the Community initiative, a series of over 15 free concerts, movies and events for the community. This included diverse world music at the Morristown Green, emerging and innovative artists at 70 South Gallery, movies at MPAC and outdoor evening events at Vail. Overall, over 5,000 people attended these free events that included poetry, reggae, classical guitar and even salsa dancing. We are committed to providing arts experiences by and for the diverse populations we serve. Our Education programs, which include performing arts training, student recognition, youth productions and more, provide cultural enrichment to young people at a time when arts programs are often on the chopping block in school districts. We continue to find new ways to expand these programs throughout our region. The addition of The Miracle Project New Jersey and relaxed performances has been another exciting step toward providing opportunities of diversity, equity and inclusion. This award-winning innovative program for individuals on the autism spectrum and with other special needs is just the beginning of what we hope to achieve in this area. MPAC has also been proactive in creating work opportunities for adults with special needs and other barriers to employment. We thank you for your enthusiastic support of our venue and for returning year after year. Each season, we strive to make a difference, create a memory, inspire a child and dazzle an audience. I hope that the performance you are about to enjoy fulfills that promise. Warm Regards,

Allison Larena President & CEO

Dear Patron, It is a privilege and an honor to have been named the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Mayo Performing Arts Center. As first a patron, and then a donor and Trustee, I have seen MPAC evolve into one of the most innovative and successful performing arts centers in the state. What the Theatre has achieved in terms of artistic excellence, arts education, community outreach, and economic impact is nothing short of remarkable. Now, as Board Chairman, I look forward to helping to guide MPAC into its exciting future. MPAC is the anchor institution of a thriving cultural arts district in Morristown. As we look to the future, there is much more that we can do to engage our broader community. The arts create opportunities for shared experiences that bring all of us together in exciting and positive ways. Please consider joining the MPAC family by becoming a member. Member dollars are reinvested in our community, providing arts education opportunities, free community concerts and events, programs for students with special needs and scholarship opportunities for children. I am fortunate to be working with a dedicated Board committed to making MPAC thrive, and a professional staff and volunteers devoted to creating memorable experiences. I would like to thank our previous Board Chairman, Joseph M. Goryeb, for his service to MPAC and his guidance as I transition to this position. It is my hope that my stewardship will help to propel MPAC and Morristown as the leading arts destination in the state. I look forward to the challenge and to meeting you at the Theatre. Sincerely,

IAN ANDERSON PRESENTS JETHRO TULL: 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR Ian Anderson, known throughout the world of rock music as the flute and voice behind the legendary Jethro Tull, celebrates his 50th year as an international recording and performing musician in 2018. Ian was born in 1947 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. After attending primary school in Edinburgh, his family relocated to Blackpool in the north of England in 1959. Following a traditional grammar school education, he moved on to art college to study fine art before deciding on an attempt at a musical career. Tull formed in 1968 out of the amalgamation of the John Evan Band and McGregor’s Engine, two blues-based local UK groups. After a lengthy career, Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull have released 30 studio and live albums, selling more than 60 million copies since the band first performed at London’s famous Marquee Club in February 1968. After undertaking more than 3000 concerts in 40 countries during five decades, he has typically played 100-plus concerts each year to longstanding, as well as new fans worldwide. Widely recognized as the man who introduced the flute to rock music, Ian Anderson remains the crowned exponent of the popular and rock genres of flute playing. So far, no real pretender to the throne has stepped forward. Ian also plays ethnic flutes and whistles together with acoustic guitar and the mandolin family of instruments, providing the acoustic textures which has been an integral part of most of the Tull repertoire. Anderson has so far recorded seven diverse albums under his own name during a long career: 1983’s Walk Into Light, the flute instrumental Divinities album for EMI’s Classical Music Division in 1995 which reached number one in the relevant Billboard chart, and the more acoustic collections of songs, The Secret Language of Birds, Rupi’s Dance, plus rock albums Thick As A Brick 2, 2014’s Homo Erraticus, and “The String Quartets,” his 2017 collaboration with

England’s The Carducci String Quartet. In recent years, he has toured more and more as simply Ian Anderson, often with orchestras, string quartets, featured soloists. Anderson lives on a farm in the southwest of England where he has a recording and rehearsal studio and offices. He has been married for 40 years to Shona who is also an active director of their music and other companies. They have two children – James and Gael – and two grandchildren. Gael is married to actor Andrew Lincoln, currently shooting more episodes of the hugely-acclaimed zombie thriller, The Walking Dead, now preparing to shoot the 8th series as the most-watched TV drama ever. Ian’s hobbies include the growing of many varieties of hot chili peppers, the study and conservation of the 26 species of small wildcats of the world and the appreciation of mechanical watches, fountain pens, and vintage cameras. He reluctantly admits to owning digital cameras and scanners for his work on the photographic promotional images related to Tull as well as his solo career. In 2006, he was awarded a Doctorate in Literature from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, the Ivor Award for International Achievement in Music, and in the New Years Honours List 2008 an MBE for services to music. In 2011 he received another Doctorate in Literature from Dundee University. Ian owns no fast car, never having taken a driving test, and has a wardrobe of singularly uninspiring and drab leisurewear. He still keeps a couple of off-road competition motorcycles, a few sporting guns and a saxophone which he promises never to play again. He declares a lifelong commitment to music as a profession, being far too young to hang up his hat or his flute, although the tights and codpiece have long since been consigned to some forgotten bottom drawer.

Johnny Mathis The fourth of seven children, John Royce Mathis was born on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas to Clem and Mildred Mathis. As a small boy, the family moved to Post Street in San Francisco. It was there that he learned an appreciation of music from his father who taught him his first song, “My Blue Heaven”. At age eight, his father purchased an old upright piano for $25. When he brought it home, it wouldn't fit through the front door. So that evening, Johnny stayed up all night to watch his father dismantle the piano, get it into the small living room of their basement apartment and then reassemble it. Clem Mathis, who worked briefly as a musician back in Texas playing the piano and singing on stage, would continue to teach his son many songs and routines. Johnny had proven to be the most eager of the children to learn all about music. He sang in the church choir, school functions, community events, for visitors in their home as well as amateur shows in the San Francisco area. Johnny was 13 years old when Clem took him to see Connie Cox, a Bay Area voice teacher, who

agreed to take on the youngster in exchange for his doing odd jobs around her house. Johnny studied with Connie for six years learning vocal scales and exercises, voice production, classical and operatic skills. At George Washington High School, Johnny was known not only for his singing ability but his athleticism as well. He became a star athlete on the track and field team as a high jumper and hurdler and played on the basketball team. In 1954, Johnny enrolled at San Francisco State College (now called San Francisco State University) with the intention of being an English and Physical Education teacher. While there, Johnny set a high jump record of 6’-5 1/2”. This is still one the College’s top jump heights and was only two inches short of the Olympic record of the time. Just as when he was in high school, Johnny’s name was frequently mentioned in the sports sections of the Northern California newspapers. In fact he & future NBA star Bill Russell were featured in a 1954 sports section article of the San Francisco Chronicle demonstrating their high jumping skills (Russell #1 & Johnny #2 in the City

FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 2019 of San Francisco at that time). During one meet at the University of Nevada Johnny beat Russell’s highest jump attempt that day. He was often referred to as “the best all-around athlete to come out of the San Francisco Bay Area”. A fellow student, whose sextet was working at the Black Hawk nightclub, brought Johnny in for a Sunday afternoon jam session. It was at the Black Hawk that Helen Noga, co-owner of the club, first heard him sing. She decided that she wanted to manage his career. In early September of 1955, Johnny landed a job singing weekends at Ann Dee’s 440 Club. After repeated attempts, Helen convinced George Avakian, then head of Jazz A&R at Columbia, to see him. Avakian came to the club, heard Johnny sing and sent the now famous telegram to his record company: “Have found phenomenal 19 year old boy who could go all the way. Send blank contracts.” Avakian left for New York after telling Johnny that he would eventually send for him. Johnny continued his studies at San Francisco State and gained additional fame as a high jumper. In early 1956, Johnny was asked to attend the trials for the 1956 Olympic teams that would travel to Melbourne, Australia that summer. At the same time, Columbia Records requested that Johnny come to New York to start arrangements for his first recording session. Clem helped his son decide that his future and best interests were with the recording company. So, Johnny gave up his chance to become a member of the USA Olympic Team. He went to New York to record his first album in March of 1956. The first album was a collection of jazz oriented renditions of popular standards entitled: Johnny Mathis: A New Sound In Popular Song. It included jazz musicians Gil Evans, John Lewis and Teo Macero and songs like “Angel Eyes”, “Easy to Love” and “Babalu”. The album enjoyed only moderate success because jazz vocal albums were not good sellers. Nevertheless, Johnny remained in New York and landed bookings at some of the leading nightclubs such as the Village Vanguard, The Blue Angel and Basin Street East. Soon, Columbia placed Johnny under the supervision of producer Mitch Miller. Mitch favored using Johnny’s voice to sing soft, romantic ballads. At his second recording session, in the fall of 1956, Johnny recorded

two singles. These songs were to become among his most popular all-time greatest hits: “Wonderful, Wonderful” and “It’s Not For Me To Say.” Subsequently, MGM Studios signed Johnny to sing “It’s Not For Me To Say” in the film Lizzie . He played a tavern piano bar singer. In 1958, Johnny made another motion picture appearance. This time it was for 20th Century Fox in A Certain Smile. In this movie, he sang the title song playing himself in an elegant nightclub scene. Since then, Johnny’s voice has been used in countless Hollywood movies for theme songs, background music and to enhance a particular setting or segment. “Wonderful, Wonderful” and “It’s Not For Me To Say” reached their peaks on the BILLBOARD pop chart in July of 1957. These successes were followed by the monumental single “Chances Are” which became Johnny’s first #1 hit. In June of 1957, Johnny appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show where he was introduced to the record buying public and became a national celebrity and household name. Columbia Records continued to release albums of Johnny singing beautiful and romantic ballads, classic standards and the best songs from Broadway musicals. These albums, like the singles, became immediate successes with sales in the millions. It was not uncommon for Johnny to have as many as four albums on the Billboard Top Albums chart at the same time. In late 1959, Johnny recorded another song that became synonymous with the name of Johnny Mathis, the Erroll Garner composition, “Misty”. Johnny’s accomplishments are numerous and varied. He holds many records and has set many precedents in the music industry. In 1958, two years after being signed by Columbia Records, Johnny’s Greatest Hits was released. It began a “Greatest Hits” tradition copied by every record company since then. Johnny’s Greatest Hits went on to become one of the most popular albums of all time and spent an unprecedented 490 continuous weeks (almost ten years) on the Billboard Top Albums Chart. This record has been noted in the Guinness Book of World Records. At one point in his career, according to record historian Joel Whitburn, Johnny was one of only five recording artists to have Top 40 Hits spanning each of his first four decades as a recording artist. And as of 2013 he has now had a hit in every decade of his career thanks to his

JOHNNY MATHIS: THE VOICE OF ROMANCE TOUR 2019 lovely song with Jim Brickman “Sending You a Little Christmas” peaking at #4 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart! Amazingly, his second #1 Hit Single, “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late” (recorded with Deniece Williams), came almost 21 years after his very first #1 Hit Single, “Chances Are”. Johnny has been honored to make several appearances before various heads of state. Starting in June of 1973, he sang at a State Dinner held in honor of the President of Liberia. In 1978, Johnny sang for the British Royal Family at A Command Performance held at The London Palladium. He performed for President and Mrs. Reagan at the State Dinner held in honor of the Prime Minister of Japan in April of 1987. Four years later in April of 1991, he sang for President and Mrs. Bush in honor of the President of Nicaragua. Most recently, in May of 1994, Johnny sang for President and Mrs. Clinton (along with the other five living First Ladies) at a very special First Ladies Tribute. He has also been honored by entertainment heads of state. In June of 1972, he was awarded his own star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, and has also participated in the Oscars presentation many times performing the song nominated in the “Best Song” category. Johnny has received five Grammy nominations during his career. The first was for “Misty” in 1960 in the category of Best Male Vocal Performance - Single Record or Track. The second was in 1992 for “In a Sentimental Mood / Mathis Sings Ellington” in the category of Best Traditional Pop Performance. He also was nominated in 2006 for “Isn’t it Romantic”, and again in 2011 for Let It Be Me – Mathis In Nashville in the category of Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. His latest nomination occurred in 2014 for Sending You A Little Christmas also for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Johnny has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame three times so far for "Chances Are", "Misty", and “It’s Not For Me To Say”. Most impressive of all is his 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. In 2004 he sang “Over the Rainbow” with Ray Charles on Mr. Charles’ Genius Loves Company. (Johnny was very honored that Mr. Charles requested the song be played at his memorial

service.) Also in 2004, Johnny recorded Isn’t It Romantic a standards CD that was released in February 2005. 2006 was a very busy year for Johnny, marking his impressive 50th anniversary as a recording star. Johnny Mathis – Gold: A 50th Anniversary Celebration and A 50th Christmas Celebration were both released and PBS taped a special called Wonderful, Wonderful. The PBS special was later released on DVD as Johnny Mathis – Gold: A 50th Anniversary Celebration. 2006 also marked the year that he was honored with receiving the Society of Singers coveted Ella Award. Johnny continues to be honored in many different ways. In 2011 he performed for former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and received the Gold Medal of the Academy of Achievement at the Academy’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., acknowledging his many accomplishments throughout his career. Most recent honors and accolades include: 2013 Art Gilmore Career Achievement Award from the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters for Radio & Television; 2013 Induction into the brand new America’s Pop Music Hall of Fame; 2014 induction into the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame, as well as receiving the New Standard Award for his continuing career achievements. In spite of a very busy tour schedule and many charity events, Johnny still enjoys a little free time. Johnny was an avid tennis player until the late 1960s, when a good friend turned him on to his now life-long love of golf. He plays golf almost every day when he’s not traveling and has sung at many golf banquets such as the Ryder Cup. In 1985 and 1986, Johnny hosted his own golf tournament, The Johnny Mathis Seniors PGA Classic, which was held in Los Angeles. Johnny has also hosted a charity golf tournament, The Shell/Johnny Mathis Golf Classic, which was held in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Johnny’s other favorite avocation is cooking. He is a gourmet cook who cooks for himself and often others when he’s home or traveling. His mother taught him at an early age how to cook up a storm and do it well. He has enjoyed doing so all his life. After almost 60 years as a recording artist, what’s next for Johnny? “I don’t think about retiring. I think about how I can keep singing for the rest of my life. I just have to pace myself.”

VICKI LAWRENCE & MAMA: A TWO-WOMAN SHOW Multi-talented Vicki Lawrence was born in Inglewood, California where she excelled in dancing and singing, was a cheerleader and was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” by her graduating class. From 1965 to 1967 Vicki sang with the Young Americans musical group and also appeared in the feature film The Young Americans which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary. During her senior year of high school, Vicki sent Carol Burnett a letter which included a local newspaper article mentioning their resemblance. Vicki invited Ms. Burnett to the local fire department’s “Miss Fireball Contest” in which she was performing. Ms. Burnett, looking for an actress to play her kid sister on her new variety series, contacted Vicki and made arrangements to come to the event. The rest is television history. The Carol Burnett Show premiered in the fall of 1967; the same year Vicki entered UCLA to study Theater Arts. She spent eleven years with Carol, earning one Emmy Award and five Emmy nominations. In 1995 Simon and Schuster published her story. Her autobiography is entitled, Vicki!: The True Life Adventures of Miss Fireball. In 1968, Vicki went to Vietnam to visit the U.S. troops with Johnny Grant. Several years later, in 1973, Vicki received a gold record as a recording artist for her international hit single, “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.” After the Burnett show ended, Vicki went on to star in her own TV series, Mama’s Family with Ken Berry, Dorothy Lyman, Beverly Archer, and Allan Kayser. The last original episode was made in January of 1990, completing five years of first-run syndication. The show still can be seen daily throughout most of the country. Vicki was the honorary head of the D.A.R.E. program in Long Beach, California for two years while her kids were still young and in school. Around that time she and her husband also became members of the Long Beach Police Officer’s Association that raises money to protect the widows and families of slain police officers. Her efforts to protect women’s rights were recognized in 1988 when Vicki was the first woman to be honored as “Person of the Year” by the Coalition of Labor Union Women. Shortly thereafter, Vicki became one of the few successful, female game show hosts when she took on the daytime network-version of Win, Lose or Draw.

Vicki further perfected her hosting skills on her own daytime talk show, appropriately called Vicki!, from 1992 to 1994. She received critical acclaim when she was the only talk show host since Oprah to be nominated for a Daytime Emmy in her freshman year. In the fall of 1997, she briefly returned to daytime talk as the host of Fox After Breakfast from New York City. On stage Vicki has appeared in numerous productions, including Carousel, Send Me No Flowers, No, No, Nanette, My Fat Friend, Chapter Two, Twigs, Hello Dolly!, Special Occasions, I’m Getting My Act Together and Taking It On The Road, Annie Get Your Gun and live from the Grand Ole Opry, Nunsense 3: The Jamboree which aired on TNN. Mama for President: Good Lord, Why Not? written by Vicki Lawrence and Monty Aidem as told by Thelma “Mama” Harper was published by Thomas Nelson on May 20, 2008. Finally, a candidate who will speak her mind and put the country on the right track. From health care to homeland security, Mama has a plan, and not afraid to tell you about it. She tackles the big issues, and runs a campaign that has everyone running. Bitingly funny and brutally honest, Mama may just have the answer - but if not, at least readers will have a great laugh. Since 2002 Vicki has spent much of her time on the road with her stage production Vicki Lawrence and Mama, A Two Woman Show. She also travels all over the country speaking to women’s organizations about her life and career, women's health, and being a woman in a man's world. All the while she approaches everything with her characteristic sense of humor, reminding us all that “Life is much too serious to be taken seriously!” Vicki works with the Humane Society, has done much work with the American Heart Association and their “Go Red for Women” campaign. When she is in town hosts the annual WALK FOR THE CURE in her hometown where all the proceeds go to breast and ovarian cancer research at Long Beach Memorial Center. In 1974 Vicki married the head of CBS makeup, Al Schultz, who is both her best friend and professional partner. Al and Vicki have two grown children, Courtney and Garrett. They live at the beach with their two dogs, Tascha a Chocolate Lab and Lucas, a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. In their spare time Al and Vicki enjoy yacht racing. They own a 70-foot sloop named, fittingly, “Vicki.”

RUSSIAN NATIONAL BALLET THEATRE: GISELLE Program Notes Act I: A Rhineland Village Giselle, a peasant girl, has fallen in love with Count Albrécht, who has led her to believe that he is a villager named Loys. Her superstitious mother, Berthe, hoping that Giselle will marry the forester Hilarion, warns her against Loys, to whom she has taken an instinctive dislike. In order to discourage Giselle’s love for ‘Loys’, Berthe further recounts the legend of the Wilis - ghosts of young girls who have been jilted and die before their wedding day: to avenge themselves, they dance to death any man who crosses their paths between midnight and dawn. But Giselle disregards her mother and joins, with her beloved, in the celebrations that mark the end of the grape harvest, when she is crowned Queen of the Vintage. Wilfred, Albrécht's squire, secretly warns him that a hunting party is approaching, led by the Duke of Courland and the Countes Bathilde (Albrécht's future bride), who are staying at Albrécht's castle for the betrothal ceremony. Albrécht hides, but Hilarion has witnessed this meeting and decides to break in to ‘Loys’s’

cottage to discover the secret of his identity. The hunting party arrives. Giselle dances for the nobles and when she tells Bathilde that she too is engaged, the Countess gives her a necklace. Bathilde, tired from hunting, asks to rest in Berthe’s cottage, but the Duke decides to continue the hunt and orders a hunting horn to be left by the cottage door so that he and the rest of the party may be recalled when Berthe is ready to rejoin them. Hilarion now reappears from ‘Loys’s cottage. He has found Albrécht’s sword and when he compares it with the hunting horn, he sees that they bear the same crest; this gives him the evidence for which he has been looking. Not realizing that the hunt is still nearby, Albrécht returns. Hilarion interrupts the dancing and reveals the truth about ‘Loys’. He sounds the horn, the hunting party returns and Bathilde, coming out of the cottage, claims Albrécht as her fiancé. The shock is too much for Giselle and she loses her reason. In her madness she relives her love for ‘Loys’ and, seizing his sword, she kills herself.

- Intermission Act II: Giselle's Grave in the Forest Hilarion keeps vigil by Giselle’s grave, which lies deep in the forest in unconsecrated ground. It is midnight, the time when the Wilis materialize. Hilarion flees in terror when confronted by these apparitions. Myrthe, their queen, now arrives from the marshes and summons her Wilis. She draws Giselle from her grave to be initiated into their rites. The Wilis disperse as Albrécht approaches, searching for Giselle’s grave. He lays flowers at the cross and when Giselle’s spirit appears to him, he follows it into the forest. Hilarion, pursued by the Wilis, returns and is forced into an endless dance. Exhausted,

he is driven into the lake, where he drowns. The Wilis now seek out Albrécht and when Myrthe commands him to dance, Giselle urges him to the safety of the cross, but he is powerless when Myrthe orders Giselle to entice him away by dancing with him. Giselle tries to sustain him, but as the night wears on he becomes weaker and weaker. Just as he is about to die, dawn breaks. Daylight destroys the Wilis’ power and the ghostly dancers fade away; Giselle, whose love has transcended death, returns to her grave, her spirits freed from the power of the Wilis, leaving Albrécht sorrowing and alone.

Giselle: The Music and Its Creator Adolphe Adam was born in 1803 in Paris. His father, Louis Adam, came from Alsace and was a well-known pianist, professor at the Conservatoire and author of a bestselling piano method. Surprisingly, he was opposed to any musical education for his son, but eventually allowed him to enter the

Conservatoire. After a slow start Adolphe became a pupil of Boieldeu, composer of La Dame Blanche, and began to write with remarkable facility. At 22 he received the Second Prix de Rome and in 1830 his opera Danilova was presented at the Opéra Comique. During the next 18 months he composed four

THURSDAY, APRIL 4, 2019 operas, all staged in Paris. He married the sister of Pierre Laporte, director of the Covent Garden Theatre. This connection brought him to London in 1832 for the premieres of his two English comic operas, The First Campaign and The Dark Diamond, and a year later he returned with a ballet score, Faust, for the King’s Theatre. More than 50 stage works followed, many of them enormously successful, including the comic operas Le Chalet, Le Postillon de Longjumeau, La Poupée de Nuremberg, Si j'étais Roi and the ballets Le Diable á Quatre, La jolie fille de Gand, La Fille du Danube, Le Corsaire and of course, Giselle, his acknowledged masterpiece. Adam became one of the most popular composers of his time, as well-known in Berlin and St. Petersburg as in Paris and London. His last stage work was a delightful one-act operetta, Les Pantins de Violette, given its premiere on April 29, 1856 at Offenbach's Bouffes-Parisiens. Adam died in his sleep four nights later. The apparent simplicity of Adam’s music is deceptive because the piano editions of his operas and ballets, published for sale to a mass market of amateurs, required such basic presentation. He was in fact expert at creating instant theatrical effects with short melodic motifs tailor-made for character or situation and with unexpected harmonic progressions to control the audience’s emotional tension. Like his compatriots Auber and Hérold, similarly involved in opéra comique, he benefited from the influence of Rossini and Donizetti, and if all three were inevitably under the shadow of Meyerbeer when attempting grand opera, they were nonetheless totally successful in providing high-class entertainment for most of Europe for well over half a century. Adam’s accounts of composing Giselle vary: in one place he recalls having written the score in eight days, elsewhere he mentions three weeks. The historian Ivor Guest has examined a manuscript score which records dates of completion for separate sections, ranging from April 11, 1841 to the last entry on June 8. Adam may well have been referring to first sketches. At any rate he seems to have enjoyed the collaboration between himself, the rising young star Carlotta Grisi, and her choreographermentor Jules Perrot: ‘I composed the music in high spirits. I was in a hurry and that always fires my imagination. I was very friendly with Perrot and Carlotta, and the piece evolved, as it were, in my drawing room.’

Although Giselle was not the first ballet to adopt an elementary Leitmotif procedure, it is certainly the earliest that is still in the repertory. The first act contains more examples of this device than the second, because the first lends itself more to the mime scenes necessary to establish the plot in the earlier part of the ballet than it does to set dance pieces. One obvious example is the short, stabbing, unharmonized motif associated with Hilarion, another is the repeated and flexible use of the love theme for Giselle and Albrécht, recalled towards the end of the first act in fragmented form and chromatically raised pitch layers. The set dance sections are composed in the form of their aria and ensemble counterparts in operas of the time: quadrilles, waltzes, polaccas, galops, nocturnes or tarantellas. Adam uses these forms with a certain freedom and juxtaposes them effectively. The enormous popularity of Giselle has had a curious effect on its music. Since the mid 19th century, the numerous productions in different countries have brought about many changes of detail in choreography and scenario. It was not normal practice to import orchestral material for new productions of ballets of that period. The choreographer would rehearse the dancers to the sound of one violin, sometimes two, playing from a violin conductor part, prepared from the original score. An orchestration would then be ordered from a local musician, inevitably reflecting whatever changes had been made. That is why the great centers of ballet culture have inherited variants of the original music and its instrumentation. Adam’s orchestral score was never published and the foregoing comments may perhaps explain why there had been no urgent search for it. Giselle was first seen in Moscow in 1843, just two years after its creation in Paris, and a year after it was staged in St. Petersburg. The ballet’s history in Russia since that time has shown a continuous sequence of performances, with Jules Perrot - one of the great originators of the choreography - providing a basic text which has been illuminated by the care and genius of generations of ballerinas and producers. When Giselle was forgotten everywhere else in Europe - it was dropped from the Paris Opera repertory in 1868 - Russian dancers and ballet-masters preserved and honored it. The Moscow Festival Ballet’s production maintains the Russian tradition of scrupulous production and loving concern for this gem of the Romantic ballet.

RUSSIAN NATIONAL BALLET THEATRE: GISELLE Direct from Moscow, Russia

RUSSIAN NATIONAL BALLET Company of 50 Artistic Director: Elena Radchenko

The Russian National Ballet was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union’s ballet institutions were exercising their newfound creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies dedicated not only to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet but to invigorate this tradition as the Russians began to accept new developments in the dance from around the world. The company, then titled the Soviet National Ballet, was founded by and incorporated graduates from the great Russian choreographic schools of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Perm. The principal dancers of the company came from the upper ranks of the great ballet companies and academies of Russia, and the companies of Riga, Kiev and even Warsaw. Today, the Russian National Ballet is its own institution, with over

50 dancers of singular instruction and vast experience, many of whom have been with the company since its inception. In addition to their extensive tour history, beginning in January 2017 the company will embark upon a 4-month coast-to-coast tour of the United States. In 1994, the legendary Bolshoi principal dancer Elena Radchenko was selected by Presidential decree to assume the first permanent artistic directorship of the company. Ms. Radchenko is the founder of the Russian National Ballet, and she has focused the Company on upholding the grand national tradition of the major Russian ballet works and developing new talents throughout Russia, with a repertory of virtually all of the great full works of Petipa: Don Quixote, La Bayadere, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Raymonda, Paquita, Coppelia and La Sylphide, as well as productions of, among others, The Nutcracker, Sylvia, and La Fille Mal Gardee.

REO SPEEDWAGON Formed in 1967, signed in 1971, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon is a band where the main constant over the decades is a never-ending desire to give their all to their fans, year in and year out. Formed loosely in the late ‘60s at college in Champaign, IL, REO (named after the precursor to the light truck) rode to gigs in station wagons, hopping from small gigs to even tinier gigs, just to get their name out. It worked, as fans quickly realized there was much more going on here than your average college party band. By the early ‘70s, the band’s unrelenting drive, as well as non-stop touring and recording, jump-started the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. It carved a path that was eventually followed by STYX, Kansas, Cheap Trick and more. Platinum albums and freeform FM radio staples such as “Ridin’ The Storm Out” followed, setting the stage for 1980’s explosive Hi Infidelity (received the Recording Industry Association of America®’s 10X Diamond Award for surpassing sales of 10 million units in the U.S.). REO rode the top of the charts with a RIAA-certified 22 million albums sold in the U.S. and 40 million around the globe, with a string of gold and platinum records and international hit singles. In 1994, when many rock bands of their era had either broken up, or were feeling like their days were numbered, the REO team came up with a co-headline tour concept that breathed new life into the world of touring. The “Can’t Stop Rockin’” amphitheater tour featuring Fleetwood Mac, REO, and Pat Benatar was a huge success and blazed the trail for the very popular co-headline tours that are seen nationwide today. Today, fully established with songs on the radio in every city and town they ever set foot in, REO Speedwagon still has that Midwest work ethic. The band has gone on stage and in the studio to work– dozens of albums, thousands of concerts, and countless radio spins. Their eyes have always been on the future and on the road – not a year has gone by where REO Speedwagon didn’t perform live, thrilling fans with hit filled sets. The band’s younger fans might not realize the sheer impact REO has had on music and the culture of rock ‘n’ roll. Hi Infidelity’s millions in sales were fueled by massive hit singles such as “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the

Run.” All these years later, the nearly ten-times platinum Hi Infidelity still remains a high-water mark for rock bands -- the album spent 15 weeks in the #1 slot, a feat that modern artists can only dream of achieving. At the center of REO’s desire to keep it rocking for the fans is Kevin Cronin, who looks like he’s found the fountain of youth--along with the secret to penning some of the biggest hits in rock. With bandmates Bruce Hall on bass, keyboardist Neal Doughty, Dave Amato on lead guitar and drummer Bryan Hitt, REO has remained busy since the band celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2007. After an eleven-year break from recording, REO Speedwagon released Find Your Own Way Home in 2007, marking the band's 15th studio effort. Just two years later, REO teamed up with their fellow Midwestern rockers Styx to record the new single, “Can’t Stop Rockin’,” which was co-written by the two band’s frontmen, Cronin and Tommy Shaw. Later that year, the tune became the title track for the Can’t Stop Rockin’ Tour, as REO Speedwagon hit the road with STYX and .38 Special to unite three of the hardest working bands in America. Sponsored by VH1 and Rock Band®, the tour was a recession-busting night of rock ‘n’ roll, offering the best value of the year. At the close of 2009, not only did the trio of bands end up being nominated for the “Most Creative Tour Package” by Pollstar, but they were also one of the highest grossing, most successful shows of the year. In November 2009, REO Speedwagon celebrated the holidays with the release of Not So Silent Night...Christmas with REO Speedwagon. In the summer of 2010, REO teamed up with yet another rock icon, Pat Benatar, for the “Love on the Run Tour,” which brought the songs of these two historic rockers to stages all across America. The “Love on the Run Tour” took fans back to the early ‘80s explosion of hits, when both artists ruled the Billboard charts with #1 and Top 10 positions for the better part of the decade. While on the 2010 tour, REO announced the release of a 30th anniversary deluxe edition reissue of Hi Infidelity. In the spring and summer of 2012, REO linked up with Styx and Ted Nugent for the Midwest Rock N' Roll Express tour. The trek kicked off May in Texas, and crossed the country before winding up in New York in July. The title of the tour was a tip-of-the-hat to Illinois-bred

TUESDAY, APRIL 9, 2019 bands Styx (from Chicago) and REO, as well as Nugent, who has his roots in Detroit. Hot on the heels of that successful run, the Midwest Rock N' Roll Express tour was back again in spring of 2013. The highly anticipated tour started on April 18 in Grand Forks, ND and hit more than 20 cites before wrapping in Burgettstown, PA a month later. During this tour, STYX and REO Speedwagon’s Rock to the Rescue charity organization not only raised thousands of dollars for local charities at each tour stop, but they also raised $108,000 which will go directly to the Boston One Fund, helping victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. Live at Moondance Jam - the band’s hit-filled performance from the country’s premier classic rock festival, was released in both a Blu-ray and a deluxe edition (containing a CD and DVD in a glossy digipak) on November 19, 2013. In December ‘13, REO unveiled the band’s “Great Chicago Fire Hydrant” as part of a citywide Chicago public art installation project to benefit the 100 Club Chicago. Shortly thereafter, REO Speedwagon and STYX organized Rock To The Rescue Extends A Hand To Those In Need, a benefit concert for the central Illinois communities that were affected by the devastating tornadoes there. This concert raised in excess of $400,000. Summer of ‘14 found the band kicking-off a coheadlining tour of two legendary rock bands, REO and Chicago. Before the cross-country tour kicked-off Kevin Cronin said, "Can you imagine the Chicago horn section on ‘Roll With the Changes’? That would blow my mind!” That came to fruition as fans across the country had

their minds blown by a multi-song encore that brought both bands onstage together to rock out on a series of their respective greatest hits. The tour was such a crowd-pleaser that aired on AXS TV. Chicago and REO Speedwagon: Live at Red Rocks had viewers singing along with “Riding The Storm Out,” “Free,” “Roll With The Changes,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is,” “Keep on Loving You,” and “25 or 6 to 4.” Following another successful year of touring in ‘14, REO Speedwagon lined up another round of shows which began in March of 2015. That REO tour, named “Family First,” kicked off with a sun-soaked date in Cancun, Mexico, before heading back to the U.S. However, this coastto-coast run includes less shows than the usual (and very extensive) REO Speedwagon tours. 2016 saw REO Speedwagon on the road with Def Leppard. REO joined them in 50-plus cities across the U.S. and Canada. Following the Def Leppard tour, REO crossed the pond to join Status Quo for the end of their historic last electric shows called, “The Last Night Of The Electrics” tour. MICHAEL FEINSTEIN WITH VERY SPECIAL GUEST STORM LARGE Michael Feinstein has built a dazzling career over the last three decades bringing the music of the Great American songbook to the world. From recordings that have earned him five GRAMMY® Award nominations to his Emmy nominated PBS-TV specials, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe – in addition to his appearances at iconic venues such as The White House, Buckingham Palace, Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House – his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time. In 2007, he founded the Great American Songbook Foundation, dedicated to celebrating the art form and preserving it through educational programs, Master Classes, and the annual High School Songbook Academy. This summer intensive open to students from across the country has produced graduates who have gone on to record acclaimed albums and appear on television programs such as NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Michael serves on the Library of Congress’ National Recording Preservation Board, an organization dedicated to ensuring the survival, conservation and increased public availability of America’s sound recording heritage. The most recent album from his multi-platinum recording career is A Michael Feinstein Christmas from Concord Records. The CD features Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist Alan Broadbent (Paul McCartney, Diana Krall, Natalie Cole). Feinstein earned his fifth Grammy Award nomination in 2009 for The Sinatra Project, his CD celebrating the music of “Ol’ Blue Eyes.” The Sinatra Project, Volume II: The Good Life was released in 2011. He released the CDs The Power Of Two – collaborating with Glee and 30 Rock star Cheyenne Jackson – and Cheek To Cheek, recorded with Broadway legend Barbara Cook. For Feinstein’s CD We Dreamed These Days, he co-wrote the title song with Dr. Maya Angelou. His Emmy Award-nominated TV special Michael Feinstein – The Sinatra Legacy, which was taped live at the Palladium in Carmel, IN, aired across the country in 2011. The PBS series Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook, the recipient of the ASCAP Deems-Taylor Television Broadcast Award, was broadcast for three seasons and is available on DVD. His most recent primetime PBS-TV Special, New Year’s Eve at The Rainbow Room – written and directed by Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry – aired in 2014. For his nationally syndicated public radio

program Song Travels, Michael interviews and performs alongside of music luminaries such as Bette Midler, Neil Sedaka, Liza Minnelli, Rickie Lee Jones, David Hyde Pierce and more. Feinstein was named Principal Pops Conductor for the Pasadena Symphony in 2012 and made his conducting debut in June 2013 to celebrated critical acclaim. Under Feinstein’s leadership, the Pasadena Pops has quickly become a premier orchestral presenter of the Great American Songbook with definitive performances of rare orchestrations and classic arrangements. He launched an additional Pops series at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in Palm Beach, Florida in 2014. Michael’s book The Gershwins and Me – the Los Angeles Times best-seller from Simon & Schuster – features a new CD of Gershwin standards performed with Cyrus Chestnut at the piano. Feinstein serves as Artistic Director of the Palladium Center for the Performing Arts, a $170 million, three-theatre venue in Carmel, Indiana, which opened in January 2011. The theater is home to diverse live programming and a museum for his rare memorabilia and manuscripts. Since 1999, he has served as Artistic Director for Carnegie Hall’s Standard Time with Michael Feinstein in conjunction with ASCAP. In 2010 he became the director of the Jazz and Popular Song Series at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center. Feinstein’s at the Nikko, Michael’s nightclub at San Francisco’s Nikko Hotel, has presented the top talents of pop and jazz since 2013. He debuted at Feinstein’s/54 Below, his new club in New York, late in 2015. His first venue in New York, Feinstein’s at the Regency, featured major entertainers such as Rosemary Clooney, Glen Campbell, Barbara Cook, Diahann Carroll, Jane Krakowski, Lea Michele, Cyndi Lauper, Jason Mraz and Alan Cumming from 1999 to 2012. He has designed a new piano for Steinway called “The First Ladies,” inspired by the White House piano and signed by several former First Ladies. It was first played to commemorate the Ronald Regan centennial on February 6, 2011. In 2013 Michael released Change Of Heart: The Songs of Andre Previn in collaboration with four time Oscar and eleven time Grammy Award-winning composer-conductor-pianist Andre Previn. The album celebrates Previn’s pop songs and motion picture classics. Earlier album highlights include Hopeless Romantics, a songbook of classics by Michael’s late friend

THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 2019 Harry Warren, recording with legendary jazz pianist George Shearing. His album with songwriting icon Jimmy Webb, Only One Life – The Songs of Jimmy Webb, was named one of “10 Best CDs of the Year” by USA Today. Feinstein received his fourth Grammy nomination for Michael Feinstein with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, his first recording with a symphony orchestra. The year before, Rhino/ Elektra Music released The Michael Feinstein Anthology, a two-disc compilation spanning 1987 to 1996 and featuring old favorites and previously-unreleased tracks. Michael was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, where he started playing piano by ear as a 5-year-old. After graduating from high school, he moved to Los Angeles when he was 20. The widow of legendary concert pianist-actor Oscar Levant introduced him to Ira Gershwin in July

1977. Feinstein became Gershwin’s assistant for six years, which earned him access to numerous unpublished Gershwin songs, many of which he has since performed and recorded. Gershwin’s influence provided a solid base upon which Feinstein evolved into a captivating performer, composer and arranger of his own original music. He also has become an unparalleled interpreter of music legends such as Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Duke Ellington and Harry Warren. Feinstein has received three honorary doctorates. Through his live performances, recordings, film and television appearances, and his songwriting (in collaboration with Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Lindy Robbins, Bob Merrill and Marshall Barer), Feinstein is an all-star force in American music. STORM LARGE Storm Large: musician, actor, playwright, author, awesome. She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day. Storm spent the 90s singing in clubs throughout San Francisco. Tired of the club scene, she moved to Portland to pursue a new career as a chef, but a last-minute cancellation in 2002 at the Portland club “Dante’s” turned into a standing Wednesday night engagement for Storm and her new band, The Balls. It wasn’t long before Storm had a cultlike following in Portland, and a renewed singing career that was soon to be launched onto the international stage. Highlights of the 17-18 season include debuts with the San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Vancouver, Jacksonville, and RTÉ National Symphonies, as well as return engagements with the Houston, Toronto, and Toledo Symphonies. Storm and her band, Le Bonheur, continue to tour concert halls across the country. The 16-17 season included debuts with the Atlanta, Baltimore, and BBC Symphony Orchestras, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, as well as return engagements with National Symphony Orchestra and Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Recent highlights include engagements with the New York Pops, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Memphis Symphony, and

the Knights, as well as performances at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago. She joined Michael Feinstein as special guest on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Popular Song series, as well as with Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey, and the Pasadena Pops. Storm made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011, singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. She continues to perform with the band, touring nationally and internationally, and she was featured on their CD, Get Happy. Storm has also sung with Grammy winner k.d. lang, pianist Kirill Gerstein, punk rocker John Doe, singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton. She debuted with the Oregon Symphony in 2010, and has returned for sold out performances each year thereafter. Storm made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2013, singing Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins with the Detroit Symphony as part of the Spring for Music festival. The NY Times called her “sensational,” and the classical music world instantly had a new star. In 2007, Storm starred in Portland Center Stage’s production of Cabaret with Wade McCollum. The show was a smash hit, earning Large glowing reviews. Her next endeavor, the autobiographical musical memoir, Crazy Enough, played to packed houses in 2009 during its unprecedented 21-week sold out run in Portland. Storm went on to perform a cabaret version of the show to critical acclaim at

MICHAEL FEINSTEIN WITH VERY SPECIAL GUEST STORM LARGE the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival in Australia, and Joe’s Pub in New York. Her memoir, Crazy Enough, was released by Simon and Schuster in 2012, named Oprah’s Book of the Week, and awarded the 2013 Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. Storm is featured in Rid of Me, a film by Portlander James Westby, starring Katie O’Grady and Theresa Russell. In 2010, she starred at the Mark Taper Forum with Katey Sagal and Michael McKean

in Jerry Zak’s production of Harps and Angels, a musical featuring the work of Randy Newman. In the fall of 2014, Storm & Le Bonheur released a record designed to capture their sublime and subversive interpretations of the American Songbook. Entitled simply Le Bonheur and released on Pink Martini’s Heinz Records, the recording is a collection of tortured and titillating love songs: beautiful, familiar, yet twisted… much like the lady herself.

THE ROMEROS Over half a century after walking onto the world stage as the first classical guitar quartet, The Romeros continue to be a veritable institution in the world of classical music, dazzling countless audiences and winning the raves of reviewers worldwide. Known to millions as “The Royal Family of the Guitar,” the Romeros were founded by the legendary Celedonio Romero with his sons Celin, Pepe and Angel in 1958. The Quartet went through natural transformations, and today consists of the second (Celin & Pepe) and third generations (Lito & Celino). To have so many virtuosi of the same instrument in one family is unique in the world of musical performance, and in the realm of the classical guitar it is absolutely without precedent. The New York Times has said: “Collectively, they are the only classical guitar quartet of real stature in the world today; in fact, they virtually invented the format.” Celebrating their 55th anniversary, the season will include tours in Asia, Europe, South America and the United States. The Romeros will also be presenting special concerts and festivals in memory of the 100th anniversary of patriarch Celedonio Romero. As the family says, “the spirit of the quartet is him; all our concerts now pay homage to him.” In 1957, the family left Spain and immigrated to the United States, where three years later, “The Romeros” became the first guitar quartet while the boys were still in their teens. The Romero tradition of family and love for the guitar provided the fertile ground for the next generation of guitar virtuosos as Celino and Lito joined the quartet. A recent project with Deutsche Grammophon included a much-anticipated Christmas music recording featuring favorites from around the world. Christmas with Los Romeros was released worldwide and accompanied by tours in Europe, the United States and Asia, featuring music from this recording. Other recent recordings include a recital CD by Sony Red Seal label, entitled appropriately: Los Romeros: Celebration and DECCA released a retrospective collection, Los Romeros: Golden Jubilee Celebration. The sterling reputation of The Romeros has been confirmed by repeated recital performances and orchestral appearances with symphony orchestras of Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berlin, Vienna, Madrid, Sevilla, Amsterdam, Munich, Rome, Shanghai, Seoul, among many others. They have made frequent festival appearances

throughout the world, including the Hollywood Bowl, Saratoga, Blossom, Wolf Trap, Salzburg, and Schleswig-Holstein. The Romeros are particularly popular with college audiences, making regular appearances on university music series throughout the country as well as on fine arts series worldwide. In New York, they have been repetitively invited to Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium, the Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park, the 92nd Street Y and Rockefeller University. They have appeared at Vienna’s Gesangsverein and Konzerthaus, the Berlin Philharmonie, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Zurich Tonhalle, Madrid Auditorio Nacional de Musica, and the Beijing Concert Hall. The Romeros have performed on multiple occasions at the White House and many other venerable institutions worldwide. In 1983, they appeared at the Vatican in a special concert for John Paul II, and in 1986, they gave a command performance for his Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. In 2000, His Royal Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain knighted Celin, Pepe and Angel into the Order of “Isabel la Católica”. With a 55-year plus history, The Romeros have built an enviable discography and their achievements have not gone unnoticed. In February of 2007, The Romeros were granted The Recording Academy’s President’s Merit Award from the GRAMMYs© in honor of their artistic achievements. Television fans have seen and heard The Romeros many times on such shows as The Tonight Show and The Today Show, PBS’s Evening at the Boston Pops, the KPBS/PBS biographical documentary Los Romeros: The Royal Family of the Guitar, other PBS specials and the NDR documentary film Los Romeros: Die Gitarren-Dynastie. Perhaps The Romero’s most lasting legacy is the creation of an entirely new repertoire for guitar quartet, both as a chamber ensemble and as a concerto soloist. For 55 years, The Romeros have inspired distinguished composers to either write new works or arrange existing ones, including Joaquín Rodrigo, Federico Moreno Torroba, Morton Gould, Francisco de Madina and Lorenzo Palomo. As Rodrigo has said, “The Romeros have developed the technique of the guitar by making what is difficult to be easy. They are, without a doubt, the grand masters of the guitar.” For more information about The Romeros, please visit www.romeroguitarquartet.com and www.peperomero.com.

THE HIT MEN Legendary Performers with Frankie Valli, Carole King, Cat Stevens, Blood Sweat & Tears and many others from the royalty of rock! The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s were a magical era for songwriting, and during that period, artists like Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and other big name groups created unforgettable hits that have graced the airwaves and concert halls for generations and are woven into America’s consciousness. After decades behind the scenes, five of the greatest musicians who were instrumental in the success of these fabulous songs have reunited to form The Hit Men. Not Broadway actors, or a tribute band, these guys are the real hit-makers who traveled all over the world, creating music and memories - from Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, to the Sydney Opera House and the London Palladium. A group of amazing performers, superb musicians, superior vocalists, great arrangers and creative composers, The Hit Men are the hit-makers of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s – including performing and/

or recording members of legendary bands and artists like Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, The Critters, Jim Croce, Cheap Trick, Blood Sweat & Tears, Sting, Cat Stevens, Elton John & Kiki Dee, Carly Simon, and more. On the road touring as The Hit Men, this brotherhood of musicians relive the magic they created on world stages and in recording studios, bringing audiences a night of hit after hit, after hit -- including everyone’s favorite Four Seasons songs like “Oh What a Night, ” “Who Loves You,” "Let's Hang On," and more great tunes made even more famous by Broadway’s Jersey Boys. And they also perform many other timeless hits that they helped make famous – including “Mony, Mony,” “Peace Train,” “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," "You’re So Vain," "Don't Stop Believing," "The Loco-Motion," and many more. During their performances, The Hit Men also share behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes from their days in recording studios and on the concert circuit; it’s an entertaining and informative look back through rock & roll history from the guys who lived and breathed the experience.

Lee Shapiro In 1973, at the age of 19, Lee Shapiro joined Frankie Valli as one of the legendary Four Seasons. As keyboardist/musical director, Lee toured the world performing classic hits like “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, “Sherry”, and “Big Girls Don’t Cry”. Lee was the and arranger on the multi-million sellers “Oh, What A Night” and “Who Loves You”. In the 1980’s Lee collaborated with hit songwriters L. Russell Brown, Sandy Linzer and Irwin Levine, writing music for the hot recording artists of the day. In 1990, Lee formed Lee Shapiro Music, a creative company providing music for advertising and the media. Countless TV themes and commercials were created for NBC, CBS, ABC, Coca Cola, Budweiser, and on and on. In 1991, Lee collaborated with Barry Manilow in the production of his show Copacabana, The Musical. In 1999, Lee diversified his talents and created the “must have” toys of 2000 and 2001, “Rock N’ Roll Elmo” and “Rock N’ Roll Ernie” for Mattel/Fisher-Price. Located in New Jersey, Lee Shapiro has been on the NYC music scene for more than three decades. “Leaving Manhattan School of Music at nineteen years of age to become one of Frankie Valli’s 4 Seasons gave me the opportunity to see the world and perfect my craft. Orchestrations and arrangements were written on planes and in hotel rooms

and performed the same night, sometimes without rehearsal.” Playing to sell-out audiences in venues such as the London Palladium, The Sydney Opera House, The Grand Ole Opry and Madison Square Garden gave Lee the vehicle to meet and ultimately collaborate with stars ranging from Barry Manilow and Tommy James to the London Symphony Orchestra. In 2010, amid the success of the Broadway show Jersey Boys, Lee had a discussion with his friend of 40 years, Frankie Valli. Soon after, he called a group of friends and music industry colleagues, and The Hit Men was formed. “This band consists of five guys who toured and recorded with the legends of the music industry, created hit songs and have been friends for between 30 and 50 years. It truly is “too good to be true”. Jimmy Ryan Jimmy Ryan started playing guitar at 10 years old and began performing for audiences at fifteen. By seventeen he had his first recording contract and by eighteen, scored his first hit record as lead guitarist, vocalist and co-songwriter with The Critters. The band began as a high school project and ended up a national phenomenon with three top hits, “Younger Girl,” “Mr. Dieingly Sad,” and “Don’t Let The Rain Fall Down on Me” which Jimmy penned, as well as several chart records including, “Marrying Kind of Love,” “Bad

SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 2019 Misunderstanding,” and “Touch & Go.” When the Critters split up in 1969, Jimmy continued his career as lead guitarist, backup vocalist, often arranger, and occasional co-writer with Carly Simon, recording such hits as “Anticipation,” “You’re So Vain,” the Academy Award winning song, “Let The River Run” and many more. He has performed with Carly in two HBO specials Live From Martha's Vineyard, and My Romance and played on the Carly Simon soundtracks and songs from the movies, Working Girl, Sleepless in Seattle, Postcards From the Edge, This is My Life, Little Black Book, and The Falcon & The Snowman earning one platinum and four gold records. His working relationship with Carly spanned twenty one years, and they remain close friends to this day. Jimmy has also recorded albums with many other artists, most notably Cat Stevens and Jim Croce, receiving a gold record for each, as well as recording with Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, John Entwhistle (bassist of the Who), Jim Webb, Elton John and Kiki Dee, The Doors, Matthew Fischer (Keyboards: Procol Harem) and many more. When not performing with The Hit Men, Jimmy composes music for film and TV under his alter ego’s name, James Ryan. The George Washington Museum in Mount Vernon is featuring five films with Jimmy’s music, and Independence Hall in Philadelphia is currently featuring Jimmy’s music in their introductory presentation of “The Liberty Bell.” Jimmy is a founding member of The Hit Men and has been their lead guitarist, coarranger and co-lead singer since 2010. Best of all, he can do both at the same time… there is none better”, raves Alan Parsons. The Canopus Drum Company considers Steve so important to their artist roster, they warehouse kits for his touring use worldwide. Today, Steve is an instructor/educator at the School of Rock in Montclair, New Jersey and has 20 students under his tutelage. He is thrilled to be a member of The Hit Men. Jeff Ganz Born in Washington DC, Jeff became a New Yorker at age 13. A year later, he began performing professionally as a guitarist/vocalist in the Hendrix/Clapton tradition. At 20, Jeff made the decision to master the bass, as it represented the ideal hybrid between harmony and rhythm, guitar and drums. He studied upright bass with renowned bass experts Bill Pemberton, Clyde Lombardi, Homer Mensch, and Derek Jones. To

build a more solid foundation on the electric bass, he turned to the highly respected guitarist and film composer Ira Newborn and jazz giant Jeff Andrews. Jeff also studied piano and drums. Jeff has toured and recorded with such legends as Johnny Winter, Roy Buchanan, John Lee Hooker, Gerry Mulligan, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Tito Puente, Chuck Berry, Joe Morello, Melvin Van Peebles, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Dr. John, Larry Coryell, Eddie Money, Jim Dawson, Christine Lavin, Marilyn Michaels, Cheap Trick, Vanilla Fudge, and Blood, Sweat & Tears.
