Honoring

Starlight Award

Friday, November 17, 2017 The Park Savoy Estate Florham Park, NJ

Congratulations to Private Advisor Group and The Starlight Ball Committee!

With best wishes for another inspirational year of performing arts in Morristown. Teresa and Matt Finlay

Welcome to the Starlight Ball! Dear Friends, Patrons and Donors, It is my pleasure to thank our Starlight Award honoree, Private Advisor Group, for its support of Mayo Performing Arts Center. Headed by Pat Sullivan and John Hyland, Private Advisor Group has been a steadfast supporter of Mayo Performing Arts Center over the years through their generous support of our events and programs. Pat and John, who is also a member of MPAC’s Board of Trustees, have a tradition of being philanthropically inclined. Most notably, Pat has served as Chairman of the Board of Good Grief, and John has served on the Board of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. One of the things that makes Pat and John such wonderful individuals is their zest for life that is evident in their business and in the causes they support. I’m sure we will see their enthusiasm on the dance floor tonight! Congratulations to our dedicated Starlight Ball Committee for putting together another memorable event in our beautiful new location, The Park Savoy Estate. The committee surpasses itself every year in providing us with an outstanding evening that ensures that tonight will be a resounding success. Thank you to my fellow trustees for your leadership and guidance in support of this important arts organization. You give tirelessly of your time, services and resources to keep the Theatre on sound footing. We are so fortunate to have an incredible staff here at MPAC, led by Allison Larena. Their hard work and stewardship of this wonderful arts center are greatly appreciated as well. Everyone’s efforts have led to the Theatre becoming the cultural jewel and an economic engine of Morristown. Thanks to all of you for your support of this important fundraising initiative. Enjoy this evening of entertainment and dancing with the knowledge that your generosity is supporting MPAC’s arts education and community outreach programs for the diverse population we serve! Sincerely,

Joseph M. Goryeb Chairman, Board of Trustees

What We Do Tonight What we do tonight is to try to keep The wonder of the performing arts alive; What we do tonight may not cure the stricken; Nor fill the bellies of a starving people; Nor send the ghetto child to camp; What we do tonight might…just might…in a time of special need Lift the spirits of a dying man Or feed the soul of a woman who’s lost her faith Or fill a small child’s heart with inspiration. What we do tonight may not save lives, but What we do tonight can make those lives just a little more worth living.

Bud Mayo 1986

Welcome to the Starlight Ball! Dear Friends and Supporters, Welcome and thank you for joining us tonight for our 19th Annual Starlight Ball at our beautiful new location, The Park Savoy Estate! We hope you all get into the spirit of the Roaring Twenties during this wonderful evening of entertainment, dancing and fundraising that celebrates Mayo Performing Arts Center. We are honored to present Private Advisor Group with the Starlight Award in recognition of their extraordinary support of MPAC. The Mayo Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit organization, serves the Northern New Jersey area with over 200 performances annually that touch the lives of over 200,000 patrons, including over 40,000 children. For 23 years, we have brought the world’s greatest entertainers to our hometown, provide vibrant arts education experiences for children, and serve as an economic engine that drives more than $15 million in annual revenue to the area. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our honorees, Pat Sullivan and John Hyland of Private Advisor Group, for their generous contributions to our Theatre. Their sense of philanthropy shines through in every aspect of what they do. I also thank Kevin Kern, from Broadway’s Finding Neverland and The Bridges of Madison County, who will be entertaining you tonight along with our own talented Performing Arts Company. Every year, the highlight of the Starlight Ball is when our Performing Arts Company takes the stage. These talented young performers volunteer their time and serve as our ambassadors, performing at many venues throughout the year, including hospitals, senior centers and for nonprofit organizations. We are so proud of their dedication and hard work. It takes an amazingly talented group of dedicated people to make this great fundraising event possible. This includes the Starlight Ball Committee, MPAC’s hardworking staff, and its committed Board of Trustees under the leadership of Joseph M. Goryeb. This is truly a team effort to organize the Starlight Ball every year and make it a night to remember! Thank you for supporting our major fundraising event of the year. Enjoy the evening! Sincerely, Allison Larena President and CEO

The Park Savoy Estate, like any historic site, has had many lives and has even more stories to tell from its past. At the heart of the Park Savoy, you can still find the structure of the original 1870s house around which the estate was built. Following the house’s sale in 1918, it was remodeled and expanded. It was sold in 1922 to New Jersey crime syndicate associates Samuel “Shimmy” Blue and Jacob Weinberg, and thus began its dramatic history as a Speakeasy known as the “Canary Cottage,” selling liquor during the Prohibition era. Thomas Edison’s son and Charles Lindbergh visited during this period, along with infamous members of New Jersey’s underworld, including “Lucky” Luciano, “Longy”

Zwillman (oft referred to as the Al Capone of New Jersey) and others. Today, The Park Savoy Estate, newly re-created and re-born, fulfills Luciano and Zwillman’s desire to create a unique venue where “the most prominent citizens…would come and we make ‘em feel comfortable.” For the full history of The Park Savoy Estate, please visit www.theparksavoy.com.

Many thanks to each of our committee members for their time, dedication and enthusiastic support in making the Starlight Ball a success.

PERFORMING ARTS COMPANY

Starlight Ball 2017

The Performing Arts Company (PAC) is an

ensemble of 25-30 students, ages 13-21, who perform Broadway-style songs at hospitals, community events, nonprofit fundraisers and local/regional festivals, free-of-charge throughout the state. For 12 years, the program has been providing a platform for youth who share a passion for the performing arts to use their talents to give back to the community as they receive comprehensive training, also free-of-charge, from experienced teaching artists. Each PAC member is a talented singer, dancer and actor who has successfully auditioned. The secondary population served is the 18,000+ audience members annually who enjoy PAC performances. The PAC performs at about 30 New Jersey venues each season (In addition to frequently performing with MPAC’s accomplished guest artists, they have been invited to perform at Walt Disney World, the White House, and with Kristin Chenoweth in My Love Letter to Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and the Dramatists Guild Fund Gala at Gotham Hall in NYC, elevating their artistic learning experience.)

Guest Artist Performance

Kevin Kern is recently back from starring as JM Barrie in the National Tour of Finding Neverland. He performed this role over a hundred times in the Broadway production as a standby for Matthew Morrison, Alfie Boe, and Tony Yazbeck. Other Broadway credits include Wicked (Fiyero), The Bridges of Madison County (Standby for Robert Kincaid), First Date (Standby), The Wedding Singer (Standby for Robbie Hart), and Les Miserables (Marius). He has also performed in London where he was a part of the West End production of Hair. On the other side of the globe, he has traveled and performed extensively in Asia. He helped open the Culture Square Theater in Shanghai and has performed concerts in Singapore and Manila. Currently, he is helping to develop Singapura, an original musical opening in 2015 in Singapore to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their independance. Other travels have taken him to Los Angeles where he was in the Pre-Broadway production of 9 to 5 The Musical and across the country in the National Tour of The Music Of Andrew Lloyd Webber. He has also performed concerts in Mozambique, Chile, Argentina, and all around the Caribbean. Closer to home, he was in the original Off-Broadway productions of Next To Normal at Second Stage Theater, played Woody in Finian’s Rainbow at the Irish Repertory Theater, and was a swing in the original company of Altar Boyz, where he performed all five roles. When he’s not working in New York, Kevin has performed across the country in such venues as The Papermill Playhouse in New Jersey, The St. Louis MUNY, Sacramento California Music Circus, The Virginia Opera, and The Signature Theater in Washington D.C. He has also performed at the world famous Carnegie Hall. Kevin originally moved to New York City to attend New York University where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. He and his wife, Megan Lawrence, have four crazy kids named Gus, Sunny Jo, Nolie, and Clover!

Congratulations! Here’s to another great season. Nancy and Bill Conger
