A Note From the Director: West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time! With an unforgettable score by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, a powerful and poignant book by Arthur Laurents and genius conception, choreography and storytelling by Jerome Robbins, it has become known as one of theatre’s finest accomplishments. The musical, based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was dramatically revised before appearing on Broadway in 1957. It was originally conceived by Jerome Robbins in 1949, and was to be set in New York City during the period of Easter and Passover. Tony was to be Catholic and Maria was to be Jewish. It was not until 1955 that the idea became to set the story around the warring street gangs of the Puerto Rican "Sharks" and the American “Jets” and the two idealistic lovers who found themselves caught between them. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice became one of the most innovative and relevant dramas of our time. West Side Story as a love story, a ground breaking musical and a social commentary challenges each of us to continue to struggle for understanding and justice. The themes that were so prevalent in 1957 are still alive today. We hope that by telling this story once again we can open the hearts of our audience to have more understanding of those whom they perceive as different and remind them of the hope and power of love in a time of tension and division in our society. It has been such a pleasure to bring this story to life at MPAC. I am so proud of our young performers as they have taken on these complex characters, extremely challenging choreography and serious subject matter with such professionalism and integrity! Your talent never ceases to amaze me! I have had the joy of collaborating with a fantastic creative team and a top-notch production staff. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart!! Lastly, we would be nowhere without our audience and we thank you all for your tremendous support. We hope that you will leave here humming these beautiful songs, dancing a mambo and believing in the power of love!!

Cathy Roy Director

A Note from the President and CEO: We are so excited and proud of the work that the cast and crew have done getting this performance ready to take the stage. West Side Story continues our tradition of memorable Spring productions, which also include Mary Poppins, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hairspray and Les Misérables. West Side Story is the ultimate example of the amazing work that MPAC’s education department continues to do in our community and throughout New Jersey. Did you know that over 600 children participate in Performing Arts School classes annually? Or that MPAC awards over $5,000 in scholarships to these classes, so that no child is ever turned away due to inability to pay for a class? Or that over 40,000 children and their families experience MPAC education-related events? The list of accomplishments is extensive and continues to grow. Our dedication to arts education goes beyond merely teaching someone to sing, dance or act. It is focused on inspiring creativity and improving communication skills. The skills gained in arts education go far beyond the stage – they inspire confidence, cooperation and teamwork – skills essential no matter what path your child may follow. On behalf of the staff and Board of Trustees of the Mayo Performing Arts Center, I would like to congratulate Cathy Roy, our Education Director, and Director of West Side Story, her entire cast and creative team, the production crew and especially our wonderful youth performers on a job well done. We’re all so proud! Best wishes,

Allison Larena President and CEO Mayo Performing Arts Center
