The MBA Venture Challenge (VC) is an integral part of the first year of Texas A&M’s Full-Time MBA program. It has been designed around several key objectives:

 To help Mays MBAs develop the ability to quickly and effectively evaluate emerging technologies and early stage firms, providing a clear, unbiased, and business-oriented evaluation of the businesses’ potential.  To provide Mays MBAs with an opportunity to further develop their teamwork, analysis and presentation skills.

This year, Brandon Coleman of Big Picture Thinking spoke to the importance of developing and living a strong personal brand.

 To provide an actionable analysis to venture owners, founders and executives as well as licensees such as Texas A&M’s Office of Technology Commercialization.  To assist the management of the startup firm with another set of eyes as the firm moves forward. For the Challenge, first year MBA students are divided into teams. Each team is assigned an early stage venture. The MBA teams are encouraged to review the venture to demonstrate the full range

of their analytical capabilities. The teams are asked to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the venture and present their conclusion to a panel of judges from the business and academic communities. Teams are evaluated on the quality of the work performed, the presentation of the results, and responses during the Q&A session. Congratulations to Cindy Billington, Associate Director, MBA Career Education and Advising! Cindy recently received two prestigious accolades, the President’s Meritorious Service Award and the Mays Outstanding Staff Award.

Committed to innovation and communication, she leverages LinkedIn, Twitter, and a blog to share professional and career development topics and resources with MBA and masters students. Moreover, Cindy has volunteered with the Prison Entrepreneurship Program for the past 8 years, working with inmates to teach them business

principles so that they can start businesses after release. By championing this cause, she is making a difference in the lives of the inmates as well as the students who join her. In addition, through networking efforts she secured the elite opportunity for the Mays MBA program to participate in a pilot program called Relationship Masters Academy started by Keith Ferrazzi (now called myGreenlight). She served as the team lead, volunteer mentor, and ambassador during the program. Many students commented that learning to develop authentic relationships

and powerful networks will serve them well in their lifelong career management.

Her support encourages students to immediately engage in their career management efforts and is one of the most significant reasons for the excellent “placement” results that are consistently over 93%.

Technology Highlight: BlogTalkRadio Looking for a way to reach out to MBA and masters students without traveling to campus? BlogTalkRadio is a new way GBCS connects students with current career advice from employers and experts. Through the GBCS BlogTalkRadio channel, Real Career Talk, students can listen as employers call-in and discuss hot career topics.

Different from podcasts, the Real Career Talk channel allows students to interact with the guest speakers in real-time and call-in with questions while the show is airing. Our First BlogTalkRadio program was presented by a former MBA now working in the oil and gas industry. Our guest provided valuable tips and advice for Texas A&M

MBA and masters students on how to maximize every conversation they have with business professionals. If you are interested in connecting with students through this resource, please contact Cindy Billington directly by calling 979-458-3048 or emailing
